Arthit’s POV
I went straight to see Lam after classes. He was at the soccer court, getting ready for Sotus drills when I reached.
“Lam, come here, please.”
Lam came over. “Yes P?”
“What was that about with P Kong today?”
“I am sure you know what happened, P. Why do you ask?”
“You know what we stand for in Sotus, right?”
“I do know, P. But I feel like P Kong is abusing that privilege. I am happy to always be there for my seniors and juniors, but not if I feel that I am being taken advantage of.”
I fell silent. I looked at Lam for a long bit.
“Okay. Do me a favour. P Kong is coming for Sotus today. I will be chairing it with him. But I need something to be dropped off. Can you do that for me? It’s ok if you are late or miss Sotus. You got my permission.”
Lam nodded at me and collected the package from me and went to the address as stated. He didn’t know then and I didn’t tell him either but it was to P Kong’s house.
Sometimes, you had to solve the problem from the root. Maybe if he saw the kind of family dynamics Kong came from, he would understand better plus realize how wrong his words were.
I knew Lam was a good kid but a very icy cold guy. But beneath all of it, I knew he was a warm soul. He may have forgotten it but I didn’t. As head hazer, I didn’t just grow my boys for Sotus. I grew them for life too.
Lam’s POV
I looked at the address. It wasn’t too far from here, a 30 minute ride on my bike. I secured the package, strapped it to my bike securely and rode off.
With traffic, it took me about 40 minutes but P Arthit told me to take my time as the recipient would wait for me.
I reached the venue and alighted, parking my bike and taking the package to the 5th floor. It was a condo and looked pretty nice. It seemed new and seemed to have all of the facilities.
I clicked my tongue approvingly and thought of whomever was staying here must be rich. I rang the doorbell of the apartment and initially there was no sound but eventually someone opened the door.
I was pleasantly surprised when the door opened and it was the middle aged man I had seen from 2 days ago!
“Uncle, glad to see you again! Are you ok from the last time?”
“Hello my son, yes I am. Nice to see you too. What are you doing here?”
“I was supposed to drop off a package to this address for my senior.”
“Ah, so you are the one Arthit told me about. Come in, come in.”
I walked into the home. Despite the fancy ass exterior of the condo facilities and landscape, Uncle’s home was completely different within. It was homely, very quaint and neatly maintained.
“Isn’t auntie around, uncle?”
He turned to look at me. “Auntie?”
“Yes? The house is so well kept and maintained. I see so many quirks I see in my grandma’s home here so I assume it’s auntie’s touch?”
“My wife had very different taste from me. Hers is more minimalistic whereas mine was more grandma-ish as you put it.”
“Oh no! I didn’t mean it in that way!!”
The uncle chuckled as he assured me he was teasing me.
“Just messing with you. I enjoy decorating and my son lets me have free rein so this is all of my handiwork. I know my wife would let me have free rein so its all good.”
I nodded, keeping quiet, unsure if his wife lived with him or not. I gave him the package and was about to take my leave but he asked me if I could pass something to Arthit for him as a form of thanks. I nodded.
He came out with 3 packages of food.
“Pass these 2 to Arthit. And this one is for you, ok?”
I took it, confused over what it was. I opened one to realize it was food.
“Oh uncle, you dont have to give me this too!”
“It’s just a little something. To thank you for your efforts. And if my son found out I sent you back empty handed, he will nag at me. He always said all guests must leave with a little gift. Just like his mom in this aspect.”
I nodded, thanking him for the food.
“Your son sounds so sweet, just like you and your wife uncle.”
He smiled, patting me on my shoulders lovingly. He told me to come by whenever I felt like it. I nodded and took my leave.
As I was about to go, I turned to him and uttered, “I hope I get to see the missus next time, Sir.”
Uncle smiled and said it will be a long while before I got to see her and he said I was still a young man.
I cocked my head, confused until he pointed to a photo on the wall. His wife’s photo was hanging there.
“Uncle..”
“The missus passed away when my boy was 6 from cancer. It’s only been us both since then. So as much as my wife would have loved to meet you, it’s not time yet for you ok. Or anyone else. I don’t wish it upon them.”
I was mortified, to know his wife had passed away so long ago. I sighed inwardly as death was irreplaceable. I can only imagine how he may have struggled to bring his son up.
I took my leave, thanking him for the food and that I would see him again some time. He nodded, waving me goodbye as I left.
