Once I was done cleaning up, I went over to Arthit, who was waiting for me.
“Shall we go home?” He nodded.
“By the way, thanks for helping me to drop off the package with my dad. When did you do it, though? You were with me for the better part of the day.”
“I didn’t do it. I was at school with you the whole day. I got a junior to help me out, and he was nice enough to.”
“Aww man, who is it? I will go give him my portion of dinner as a thank you.”
“I’m very sure your dad would have given him a portion, too. You know your pa by now.”
“That’s true, but I would still want to thank the junior. It’s really nice of him to do that for us.”
Arthit nodded; agreeing. We had reached the carpark, and Arthit said he would get his car. He looked towards the bike lots and pointed me towards Lam. I looked at Arthit stunned. He said Lam was the one who had dropped off the package for me.
I was stunned. I am not too sure if Lam knew that was my dad. But he did apologise to me earlier, and now it was starting to make sense. I told Arthit to give me a few minutes, and he said he would wait.
I nodded as I jogged over to Lam.
“Lam..”
He turned towards me. “Yes P?”
“Arthit told me you had helped to drop off the package for my dad. I wanted to say thank you. Have you had dinner? I got a portion here.”
“No problem, P. I am happy to do it. Your dad had actually given me a portion, too. He said you have always told him guests can’t leave empty-handed.”
I laughed. “You are right. I have told him that. I’m glad he does it. Because I do not think we should take advantage of people’s kindness and generosity towards us, so even the smallest thing as thank you is fine.”
“That’s really nice of you, P. By the way, I… need to tell you something. I.. I hope you don’t take me wrongly. I promise that wasn’t my intention. But he told me to go because I was late for my internship. And today when I saw him, I was happy to see he was ok. But I didn’t realize he’s.. “
“Ah. I see. So it was you who had knocked down my dad 2 days ago? He did tell me the kid who had knocked him was very, very apologetic. It’s..it’s fine, Lam. He’s OK, plus he did say you were very remorseful. I know it was an accident, but initially, I was pissed because I am very protective of my dad, that’s why.”
“I understand why now, P. I…he told me briefly about your mom, too.”
I kept quiet, just nodding. Even though it has been so many years, speaking about or listening about my mom still gets to me. I struggle, and I only had 5 years with her. My dad had spent 15 years with her before he had me. I can not imagine the pain he must be going through.
“I’m sorry, P if I brought up any memories. I didn’t mean it deliberately…”
I told Lam everything was ok. I thanked him once again and was about to make my move when Lam called out to me.
“P!”
I turned around, confused.
“Yea, Lam?”
“Don’t get me wrong. Your dad.. he’s a really nice man, and I enjoyed chatting with him. Will it be ok if I did go visit him once in a while? He did tell me to come by whenever I wanted.”
I laughed out loud. “That’s definitely my dad, the social butterfly. Sure, you didn’t have to ask. You can go ahead to see him whenever you want to.”
Lam nodded, thanking me. “You got a ride P? Or can I offer you one?”
“Arthit is waiting for me. Don’t worry, thanks though. Take care. Ride home safe.”
Lam nodded and I turned to go off. As I walked off, I couldn’t help but keep glancing back to look at him as I watched him ride off.
We may have started off on a rocky note but oddly, surprisingly, thanks to my dad, I think we made amends.
