I woke up around 8 am. to my dad pottering in the kitchen. I trudged over to him and hugged him tightly from the back, whining about being tired and why he was up so early and where Lam was.
Before my dad could reply to me, I heard someone call out to me. “I’m here, P.”
My eyes opened big, realizing the voice came from behind me, near the stove. I let go of my dad only to turn and realize Lam was looking at me with an amused look. Shit. He had heard me whine away like a baby.
I smiled and darted out from the kitchen quickly, going off to shower, cursing my dad under my breath for not warning me.
By the time I was done showering and changing, I came out to see my dad laying out the table, but Lam nowhere in sight.
“Lam had to go off, dear. His grandma had called him; she’s not too well. So he had to take off.”
“Oh? Okays, I hope he will be ok.”
“Just check in on him later, ok?”
I nodded and then started nagging at my dad for not telling me earlier that he was in the kitchen. My dad just laughed as he said I barely let him speak with all of my whining. I groaned as I sat down to have breakfast with my dad. I left home around 11 am. promising to come back and see him soon.
He kissed me goodbye, and I left, bringing a pack of food for Lam. I got back to uni but realised he wasn’t in his room. I brought the food back with me to my room. The whole of Sunday, there was no sound from him at all.
Monday came, and I got ready for school. But oddly, I didn’t see Lam at all in school. Finally, in the evening, I saw Forth and Park at Sotus and asked them on Lam.
Park and Forth looked at each other grimly before telling me that Lam’s grandma had passed away on Sunday night, and they just got the news from Lam. They wanted to skip Sotus to go see him and were about to go see Arthit on this when I stopped them. My heart dropped for a minute hearing that!
I waved the boys away, and they went to see Arthit, got permission, and went off. Arthit came to me.
“You ok? Have you heard about Lam’s grandma?”
I nodded, quiet. “Do you want to let your dad know? Maybe you want to go see him?”
“It’s.. it’s ok. There is still Sotus. I.. I go after this.”
“It’s fine. I still got Aim, Sharp, and the rest. We will handle it. Go see him, ok?”
I looked at Arthit. He nodded and pushed me to go. I nodded, grabbed my bag and car keys, and called my dad. He told me to pick him up, and then we both drove off to go see Lam, having gotten the address from a very surprised Park!
We walked up to the house, slowly, stunned by the sheer number of people who had turned up to pay their last respects. I saw Lam standing quietly near the entrance, speaking to Forth and Park. When he saw me, he was so surprised and even more stunned to see my dad. My dad went up to him, engulfing him in a tight hug, conveying his condolences and then making his way in to go see the body.
I stood at the steps, hesitant on what to say or do. Lam looked at me but didn’t say anything. Park and Forth left him to go in and tag along with my dad. I walked up to Lam slowly.
“Hey.. are you…”
Lam shook his head, biting his lips, trying to hold back his tears. My heart lurched, seeing him hold back and trying to be strong. I covered the remaining distance between us and took him in my arms. He let me hold onto him tightly. I felt him sob a bit, but he buried his face in my shoulders to refrain from doing it more. I just held onto him, not letting go for a good few minutes.
I finally let go and Lam turned away, not wanting to show me his face. I didn’t say anything, not wanting to push him on it. I just patted his shoulders and went on in to pay my respects. Everything was going fine for a bit until we all heard a man drunkenly shouting away suddenly.
We all swivelled towards the entrance where this middle-aged man was shouting away drunkenly at Lam. His hands went up to him, and he slapped him, and that’s when I lost it!
“Hey! Watch it!” I shouted, going towards them and pulling Lam away. Lam didn’t say a word. Forth, Park and my dad ran up to us.
Forth pulled Lam away while Park pulled me away, saying that was Lam’s dad. But before I could say anything, my dad spoke coldly.
“But he still has no right hitting Lam like that in public. And if he thinks no one will say anything, he’s so wrong. Touch him one more time and see what happens.”
Everyone fell deadly silent when they heard my dad. Lam’s dad narrowed his eyes at my dad and stepped towards him but I blocked him.
“That’s my dad. Don’t you dare.”
He glared at me and then walked away, just spitting near Lam’s feet, cursing him and walking away. I didn’t know exactly what was going on but we all knew it wasn’t so pretty between Lam and his dad.
Nobody acknowledged the fucking white elephant in the room and continued to just pay respects or chit chat among themselves. I looked at Park who pulled me and my dad and filled us in that Lam’s dad was blaming Lam for the death of his mom, saying he was a piece of fucking bad luck. This has been happening since Lam was 9 and had moved to stay with his grandma. I gripped my fists tightly, mad angry over what I was hearing but my dad told me to calm down.
He said this wasn’t a place for a fight.
“It’s not like Lam can’t hold his ground and fight. He can but he’s choosing not to. This isn’t the place. Let’s just be there for Lam but do not, I repeat do not interfere. OK, Kong?”
I nodded, albeit very, very reluctantly. My dad just patted my cheeks, saying he was going to check on Lam. I nodded and watched him go off, engaging Lam in small talk.
And all I did was observe quietly as Lam just nodded and replied back, fists gripped the entire time and eyes red rimmed, but not a single tear dropped.
