I fled to my room, shutting my door and standing there, trying to catch my breath. I could feel a deep blush coming over my face.

My dad was really the sneakiest of them lot. This man was way too crafty for me to keep up with. Just then, I heard a knock on the door.

I opened the door only to find Lam standing there. “P, I’m heading home first, ok?”

“Not staying over?”

“I am meeting the boys to go to the bar. So I gotta head back.”

“I see. Okays, have fun. Stay safe, na.”

Lam nodded and took off. I waved him goodbye at the door; closing it only to turn to see my dad sitting on the couch smiling at me.

“Pa, you got to stop it. Stop playing matchmaker!”

“I don’t have to anymore, apparently. Clearly, you two like each other, but it’s either your brains or hearts refuse to accept it. My job is done.”

My father just chuckled as he took off, saying he wanted to go prep dinner. I just sat down, switching on the TV but not really watching anything, just thinking about Lam.

I had dinner with my dad, and we were chatting and just watching TV when I decided to surf IG. I saw photos of the boys hanging out in the bar and having the time of their lives. Oddly, I didn’t see Lam in the photos. I texted Arthit casually to ask as I knew he was with them. 2 minutes later, a photo came in, one of Lam just nursing a drink at the couch stonily.

I laughed as I saw the photo, so like him. I showed it to my dad, who laughed asking why he looked so stony as my dad had hardly seen him like that before. I filled my dad in that it was his default face. My dad laughed that the smiling Lam was more suitable, and he was used to that.

I chuckled as I thought to myself. I was so used to seeing Grumpy Lam at school that a smiling one at home always confused me. However, for my dad, it was the other way around. We really both saw different parts to this guy.

Just as another question flitted to my head, I got a text.

“Hey P, it’s fun being with the boys, but wished you were here too. You would like the beers here, plus P Arthit is just too quiet without you.”

I laughed to myself as I saw his text. I realized my question was answered. I did like Lam no matter how he was.

After hanging out with my dad, I went to bed around 2am. However, I realized I wasn’t able to sleep. A message happened to come in from Lam around 4 am saying he just got home. Thereafter, I ended up sleeping like a baby. Guess I just needed to know that he was home, I guess.

The next day, I woke up around 10 am, having slept through. I woke up, showered and changed, and went out for breakfast. Dad was not at home as he had a business affair to attend to. I was making coffee for myself when the doorbell rang. I opened it only to find an Uber eats delivery.

Thinking it was from my dad, I took it and opened up finding my favourites, convinced it was from him. But then I saw the sender’s name on the receipt. It was from Lam!

I called him, only to hear him sleepily on the other end.

“Why did you send me food?”

“Because you need to eat right, P?”

“You got home so late. And what time did u wake up to arrange this?”

“I placed an order ahead last night itself P for today. Just to surprise you. Uncle already told me he had plans, so it’s just for you.”

“I… thanks, Lam.. that’s really nice of you..

“No problem, P. I’m gonna go back to sleep, yeah?”

“Oh yea, sorry, Lam. Go and rest first, na.”

“What time will you be back today?”

“Think 2pm? Maybe 3pm. I’m not sure..”

“Hmmm, okays..”

“I will text you once I’m back at school, ok?”

Lam agreed and hung up. I just looked at the phone and food for a bit, just smiling to myself. I finished breakfast, cleaned up the house a bit, made lunch, and then left for school. I texted my dad that I would see him again soon, and he told me to be careful and to come back with Lam the following week.

I just agreed and got to school around 2 p.m., texting Lam once I got back. He was out with the boys fishing and sent me photos. I just grinned as I knew these boys would be there the whole day.

I cleaned up my dorm as part of my reset routine for the week whenever I had time. I had been busy the last 2 weeks, so I finally got time to do it. I was busy cleaning when around 5 pm, someone knocked on my door.

I wondered whom it could be as I knew Arthit was out with the boys. I went to open it only to find Lam standing there.

“Hey, what are you doing here? Thought you guys were fishing?”

“They are. I thought of leaving earlier to swing by to see you.”

“Oh, come in. That’s nice, but we do see each other often.”

“But always with someone else P. Like your dad or the boys.. we have never hung out alone?”

“That’s true… I just.. I don’t know. You have your own friends too. Why would you want to hang out with me, right?”

Lam fell silent, looking at me.

“I didn’t realize I needed a reason to hang out with you.”

“I didn’t mean that.. I’m sorry.”

Lam didn’t say anything, just placing some food on the table.

“You got us dinner?”

Lam nodded.

“Let’s eat together then?”

“Together?” Lam asked hesitantly.

I nodded, affirming together definitely. The fleeting smile that appeared over his face was so worth it.

I chuckled, thinking back to my conversation with my dad when I saw his smile.

“What are you laughing about?” Lam asked softly as he prepared the food.

I filled him in on what my dad had said. Lam looked at me as he asked, “So, which part of me do you like best? The grumpy Lam or the smiling one?”

I looked at Lam for a long bit before muttering, “Grumpy Lam…” .

There was silence for a long bit before I heard Lam burst out laughing.

“Aren’t you annoyed at me for calling you grumpy?”

“But I am that, ain’t I? I’m just surprised you like Grumpy Lam better.”

I just kept quiet, blushing irrevocably. We just kept that conversation aside, eating dinner together and Lam hung out at my room for a bit before finally leaving at 11pm. When he left, it hit me it was the first time we had spent time alone together and I actually enjoyed it a lot.

Now, only to make it a routine if it was possible.
