I got back to my dorm, showered, changed, and sat down to eat. I opened the food package that Kong’s father had given me.
It smelt so good and tasted yummy, too. It had been ages since I last had home cooked food. I finished it all off and sat back, slumped in a food coma.
Thoughts of my own parents instantly came to mind. We are rich, super rich. Both of them always gave me all the pocket money I needed, making sure all of my school needs were met but oddly, haven’t made an effort to meet me since I was given away to stay with my grandparents since I was 9. I sighed. What I wouldn’t give to be in P Kong’s shoes, I guess.
I cleared the tables and sat down to do some work. Despite my parents giving me money, I never used any of it, choosing to do freelance engineering and IT jobs on the side to earn money to pay for university myself. To me, money was not important. Attention and kindness were. I was deprived of that, which made me the person I am, but speaking with P Kong today and experiencing his dad’s warmth made me be more nostalgic for things I have been sorely missing.
I sighed softly as I completed the jobs and submitted it to my clients before doing my uni assignments. It was close to 2am before I finally slept.
I woke up at 7am, getting ready to go for internship as usual. It was a long day and by the time I ended and rushed to Sotus, it was 6pm already. Having had only breakfast, I was starving but no time to eat too. I had to hold out till 10pm when Sotus was over and then have dinner.
I got to Sotus around 6.30pm and everyone was falling into place. I quickly kept my bag and was about to go and line up when someone grabbed my hand. Out of reflex, I was about to punch the person, turning around but I realized it was P Kong!
“P! I thought who it was! You got me there for a bit!”
“Sorry Lam. Didn’t mean to catch you by surprise. I just wanted to pass you this. My dad had swung by to pass me food as he tried a new recipe and had packed an extra portion for you and Arthit. I hope you have not eaten dinner yet. You can have this.”
I looked at the food package quietly. I took it, thanking him, muttering that I haven’t had lunch either so this was definitely a god sent. I told P Kong I would have it after Sotus but P Kong stopped me.
“Sit and eat first. You can’t be doing 3 hours straight of Sotus on zero energy. I will let Arthit know. Eat, take a 30 minute break then come join us, ok?”
I nodded, unable to argue against P Kong. I sat in the locker room, opening the food and looking at it. It was some kind of noodle dish and it looked so yummy. I finished it off, took a 30 minute break and then finally joined the boys around 7.30pm.
I was tasked to lead some drills and activities and we ended earlier around 9 plus today. I offered to do clean up to make up for the break I had taken.
Arthit looked at me, cocking his head in amusement. “You don’t have to do that. You can go home and rest. I know you had a long day. But maybe, you can give Kong a ride home if you want to thank anyone.”
I looked at P Arthit, his words sinking in and making absolute sense. I agreed and went to look for P Kong.
He was busy checking through some paperwork.
“P.. are you going home soon?”
“Soon Lam. Once I’m done. Why?”
“I will drop you off home today, ok.”
“Eh? You don’t have to. Arthit is dropping me off as usual.”
“Sorry bro, I can’t today. Something came up. Lam will send you home ok?”
Arthit came up, letting Kong know and running off. Kong groaned, knowing he had been set up again. I laughed as Kong just stared grumpily at Arthit’s departing self.
“Let me send you home P. It’s the least I can do for dinner and the break. It was much needed.”
Kong nodded, thanking me softly. I just smiled quickly and said I would wait for him at the carpark. He nodded and about 15 minutes later, he came by.
“Sorry for being late. Had to finish off some paperwork.”
“It’s ok P. I took a smoke break too so all is good.”
“By the way, are you free on Saturday?”
“Hmm, only in the evening P. We are going fishing, Forth, Park and myself. What’s up P?”
“My dad had asked me to invite you over for a meal. Would you like to come over for dinner if you are ok with it?”
I smiled, this time, unable to fight it. I nodded quickly, saying I would be happy to come and to let me know on what I can bring along.
“Just yourself, will do Lam. Don’t be so formal.”
I laughed! I sent P Kong home before making my way back. I got home around 11pm, exhausted as fuck but for some reason, a bit wired. Excited would be a better choice of word I guess.
Thankfully it was Friday today and which meant I could see Kong’s dad tomorrow and also spend time with him.
For the first time in a long bit, other than spending time with my boys, I was actually spending time with someone else and it was something to look forward to.
