I looked at Kong’s retreating back, holding my cheek. I looked at Uncle, who looked back at me forlornly, too.
“I think.. i think I will go speak to him for a bit, Uncle.”
Uncle nodded at me, and I walked to Kong’s room. I knocked on the door once, twice, but no response. I tried again, and finally, he opened the door, his eyes red rimmed.
“Can we speak?”
“I don’t think at this point, I want to. Just.. I will go to sleep in the hall. You sleep here.”
Even now, he was thinking about me only. I sighed as I just pushed my way in, closing and locking the door on us. Kong looked at me but didn’t say a word. He just went to sit on the bed, looking at the ground. I went to sit next to him. Kong just shifted a bit, but I quickly held onto his wrist tightly.
“Let go, Lam.”
“I am sorry. I… it’s hasn’t been easy. And I hate that both my parents don’t seem to care.. about me.all they care is about money. And the one person who did care about me is dead. She has been suffering from cancer for about a year now. I couldn’t even tell.. she didn’t even tell…i.. really couldn’t help but blame myself.. “
“I know..it’s hard. It’s inevitable. My dad did that to himself for years. I did that to myself for a bit too. But I know how demoralising it can be and if you can be shielded from that. I want to be able to do it for you Lam. I’m.. I’m sorry for smacking you..i just“
“Looking out for me.” Kong nodded. He looked at me and we both smiled sheepishly.
“Try and get some sleep, ok? It hasn’t been easy for you. Do you have any more family issues to settle?”
I shook my head, saying I only had to see the lawyer next week. He nodded and said he would accompany me for it.
“Sleep, ok? Anything call me.” I nodded. He stood up to go and I held onto his hand again. Kong looked at me quizzically.
“Can you just sleep here tonight, P? If it’s ok?”
Kong looked at me and then nodded. “I’m gonna change first and come. You use my bathroom ok. Just use my clothes.”
I nodded, taking a long shower, just breaking down again in the toilet. I got changed and came out, trying to ensure my face doesn’t look too puffy. Kong was sitting on the bed, looking at me. I tried to smile but it fell really short.
He stood up, beckoning me to him. I walked towards him, and he pulled me towards him, covering the remaining distance. He hugged me tightly.
“I realize you aren’t the type to express yourself in front of people. But right now, there’s only you and me. I will not tell anyone. You can be assured. If you want to cry, I’m here for you. I don’t want you to be doing it by yourself in the bathroom.”
I looked up at Kong, slightly mortified that he read me like a book. He looked at me, his eyes running over me lightly. I just bent down, leaning my head on his chest and he cradled me even more tightly as my tears came dropping down.
“It’s ok, I got you…” Kong assured me softly but confidently. I nodded. He held onto me for as long as I needed and eventually, I ended up just sleeping on him. I cried until I fell asleep and even then, Kong did not say anything.
I only realized my folly when I woke up the next morning in Kong’s arms. I woke up, realizing I was in his arms and just turned to look at him. He was still fast asleep, mouth slightly open and snoring away.
His t shirt seemed like it had streaks of watermarks on it. Damn, how much did I cry last night?!
I tried to pull away slowly and sat up but Kong woke up.
“Hey, you ok?” He muttered sleepily.
“Yes P. You should sleep first. I’m just going to shower and change and go see if Uncle is awake.”
He nodded, fast asleep before I barely completed my last sentence. I got ready and went out, only to see Uncle reading the papers.
“How are you, my boy? Ok?”
I nodded. He smiled at me, standing up to give me a hug.
“You have us, understand? No questions asked. Just come whenever you want and stay however long you want.”
I nodded. “Hungry?” I nodded again. He laughed. He told me to sit while he got breakfast ready. We had it and were watching soccer when Kong finally came out, as usual half asleep.
“How come your boyfriend wakes up earlier than you?” Uncle teased Kong playfully.
“PA!!!” Kong screamed retorting that he only pulled that stunt so my mom will lay off me.
Uncle laughed and laughed and I just chuckled, seeing Kong’s mortified face.
“Don’t tease him already Uncle. I’m grateful he helped me out yesterday.”
Uncle just chuckled and told Kong to shower and come so that he could have lunch with us.
As Kong nodded and stumbled off, I was watching him go.
“He’s a good guy.”
“He is. He’s really the best kid one could have. Couldn’t have asked for more.”
Uncle whispered back fondly, looking at me. I smiled as he patted my hand and went off to the kitchen, leaving me to be engulfed in my own thoughts over a certain senior of mine.
