{sorry for the late update, this week has been hectic to say the least. Enjoy the chapter}
“You start school in a few days. Have you thought about back-to-school shopping?” My mom asks.
I have to sit here pretending I didn’t hear that conversation between her and Collin 10 minutes ago. I didn’t even get a second to tell Jessie. “Nope. Not at all”
“Do you want to go today?” She asks.
“Ok,” I say.
“Do you want to come?” She asks Jessie.
“Yes. That sounds so fun.” Jessie says.
“Go get dressed. We’ll leave here in 15,” My mom says.
About 20 minutes later we get in the car and head to the mall. It took a little long for me to get ready. We are in my mom’s car, she is driving, I’m in the passenger seat and Jessie is in the back. It feels great not to drive for once honestly.
“Jessie, do you miss home? Are you excited to go back?” My mom looks back at her through the rearview mirror.
“Not really. I could stay here forever.” Jessie says.
“The door is always open during your school breaks,” My mom says.
“Thank you,” She says.
“What about you? Are you going to take a trip up to New York? You’re school breaks don’t line up.” She says.
“And stay with her dad? Absolutely not” I say.
“I guess we’ll get you a hotel room,” She says.
Bad idea Mom. You don’t need to know what happened last time I was in a hotel room.
“Ok, I’ll take one next week,” I say.
I swear I saw Jessie bite her lip in the rearview mirror.
“You have school,” She says.
“School is overrated”
We arrive at the mall and head inside. We go to a clothing store.
“Pick out an outfit for the first day,” My mom says.
Jessie and I head over to a rack with shirts while my mom goes over and looks at socks or something.
“She took us to an old person’s store. I would never wear any of this.” I hold up a shirt from the rack. “This would look like I’m going to my first day as a teacher, not a high school student”
“You’ll look good in anything you wear,” She says.
“Oh that reminds me we need to talk later”
She looks confused. “Why?”
“Just trust me. Be lowkey today” I say.
My mom comes back over to us. “Find anything cute”
“Mom, these are back-to-school clothes for you. Let me lead the way.” I say.
“Go for it”
We leave the store. My mom and Jessie follow behind me. They are talking about something. I’m not listening though. After a few minutes, we arrive at the store I’m looking for.
“It’s always this one,” My mom says and I swear she rolls her eyes.
We go inside and I immediately find some outfits I like. I see Jessie out of the corner of my eye browsing but not really finding anything so I go up to her.
“Can I help you out?” I ask.
“With what?”
“Just come with me.”
The womens section of this store isn’t really her style. Lots of crop tops and tight fitted shirts. She loves an oversized tee and the men’s section has just that. I go with her to the other side of the store and she immediately starts pulling things out. About 8 baggy shirts, some are graphic tees and some are plain and a couple pairs of shorts later, we head to the fitting room. My mom meets us back there. She likes to approve all my back to school outfits.
We do separate rooms this time just because my mom is here. We try on all the clothes and come out to show her every outfit. I’m not gonna lie, Jessie looks like a 12 year old boy in some of her outfits but she is beaming with pride so I’m not gonna ruin that for her.
She ends up getting everything she picked out and my mom approved. She didn’t approve of some of my choices though. I guess I’ll have to come back when she isn’t with me.
