“So… what did you want to show me?” I asked Damon.

He just smiled, lashes lowering. “Stay there, alright?”

I nodded. “Alright.”

He stepped backward then, watching me with lowered lashes, but the smile was still there, menacing.

I remained in place, watching him curiously.

He stood there for a moment, but eventually tipped his head up.

A snap echoed through the woods, and I winced at the sound, but when I looked over at him, his elbow was bent backward.

Was he… transforming?

My eyes glittered in excitement.

His back arched, fur cutting through his clothes as he got down on all fours. His face grew a muzzle, eyes shrinking back behind…

Until a gorgeous, white wolf stood in front of me.

I set my hands against my mouth, watching him in astonishment.

I then ran over to him, making him blink in surprise, but I tackled him.

His body rolled on the ground below me, but I just lay on top of him, giggling.

Somehow, he slipped out and gazed down at me in amusement, but I just stood.

“I remember when we were kids,” I said then, watching him curiously, “you would transform and I would chase your pup-form around the woods. Do you remember?”

His eyes still glittered in amusement.

But his paw set on the floor in front of me, and he lunged.

I sucked in a breath.

But I spun around and dashed into the forest, and he sprung after me.

I had to resist laughing when I passed through millions of trees and continued forward.

His paws galloped over the dirt like a gazelle, but the sound only made my blood rush more…

And this more exciting.

I spun around a tree and dashed the direction I came from, and his paws skid across the dirt before following after me.

My veins buzzed, and I breathed slowly, trying to prevent my sides from burning.

The cold wind bit into my skin, and I struggled to keep my composure before I spun around another tree…

But my foot slipped on the dirt, and I yelped, falling over.

Suddenly, arms engulfed me, and I fell into an embrace.

I gazed up then, finding Damon in his human form, holding me.

“You okay?” he said, helping me to my feet.

I nodded. “Yeah.”

He smiled down, and I immediately noticed that he was clothed.

“I could’ve sworn your clothes teared,” I said then.

He just gazed down at his outfit. “Yeah, that’s how it works.”

“Oh, okay,” I said then.

He gazed up at me then, smiling gently now.

But he flipped his head back, and I watched curiously when his form disfigured before turning back into a white wolf.

“You must really like this form,” I said then, kneeling down. “Imma pet you.”

I set my hand on his head and gently stroked the fur. “So soft.”

He watched me in amusement.

“Do you like being a wolf?” I asked him then.

He bowed his head, a gesture that told me “yes”.

“Is there a reason?” I said then. “Is it because it makes you feel free?”

He bowed his head again.

I just smiled. “Cool.”

He watched me for another moment before he pushed my hand away with a paw, and he stepped over, lightly nudging my chin with his muzzle.

I gazed down at him, but he just nodded to the ground.

Knowing what he wanted, I laid down onto the soft grass-like texture, staring up at the sky when he settled down next to me.

I gazed over at him then, but he set his muzzle on his paws, watching me.

“Do you remember when we did this and looked at the stars?” I said then, gazing up. “They were always so shaded at our home because it was so bright. All the houses made the sky less dark.”

I smiled a little, not expecting him to answer. “But look now, you can see them all so clearly.”

I pointed. “Look. I think that one’s a planet.”

For some reason, I could feel his eyes still on me.

“I wonder sometimes… when people live in towns… why they never find the woods so fascinating,” I said then. “It reminds me of…” I let out a soft yawn, rubbing my eyes before looking up at the sky, “…childhood.”

Exhaustion consumed me, as if I suddenly got overwhelmingly drained from tonight’s events.

I let my lashes lower, and they finally shut.

Although I was half asleep, I felt Damon form back into his human self, and he stepped over to me.

His arms slipped under my form, and he scooped me up as I set my head on his shoulder.

And he suddenly started walking.

I breathed gently, overwhelmingly tired and drained, and the soft rocks from his footsteps weren’t really helping.

“Are we going home already?” I wondered loopily, breaths softening.

“You’re tired, Angel,” he said gently. “And we had a fun night, didn’t we?”

“Yes…” I said then. “Very fun… and eventful….” I paused for a moment, and I gazed up at him. “Damon… what is your wish that you want so badly?”

His grip seemed to tighten on me, and his stance stiffened.

The amusement in his expression vanished, and he gritted his teeth.

“Touchy subject,” I said then. “Got it.”

But he answered anyway, “I want my sister back.”

I blinked and gazed up at him. “Your sister?”

“Yes,” he said then, tone dark. “When I was fourteen, my four-year-old sister was killed by my mother. I’ve been wanting her back since.”

Something cold consumed me, and I stared down at his chest. “You must’ve loved her very much.”

“I did,” he said quietly, “she was like my own child. I was like a father to her.”

We were both silent then, but my lashes lowered.

Even if I could wish for something myself… it would be wrong.

This couldn’t compare to me. My father was very dear to me, and I loved him… but comparing a loss of a child to a father…

There’s no question of how he deserves this wish more than me.

He remained silent then, and when I looked up, I noticed his lips were thinned.

“What’s wrong?” I said then.

He breathed out a sigh. “How do you handle it? Knowing I’m going to kill you.”

“I think it makes you more exciting,” I told him.

He chuckled. “Do you have any idea how insane you sound?”

“I am insane,” I said then. “But I don’t care. My answer remains the same.”

He just smirked then, gazing down at me as his eyes burned a bright green. “You are insane,” he agreed, lashes lowering. “That’s why I like you.”

I smiled in satisfaction.

Plus, I’m just glad it’s you.

Not knowing when you pounce is exciting.
