The crowd felt as if a massive mountain was pressing down on them, and they instinctively began to step back.
Qu Weiyin heard this and lifted her gaze sharply, the red hue of her eyes appearing even more striking in the sunlight. She involuntarily tightened her grip on her sleeve.
Just as Luo Jinxiao had said, she stood with her back facing those who had turned the six realms against her.
The middle-aged man found himself in a dilemma; he had finally located Qu Weiyin and couldn’t let her go, yet the peculiar and unfathomable power emanating from Luo Jinxiao made him wary of acting recklessly.
“You must think this through. This demon is the enemy of the entire celestial realm. In no time, all the sects will arrive. Once the demon realm is breached, she won’t be able to hide anymore,†he warned.
Luo Jinxiao was already impatient and had no time to listen to his ramblings. With a swift wave of Wujie, a massive gust carrying a fierce blizzard surged outward from her center, and as the crowd saw this, they hurriedly summoned their spiritual energy to resist. However, several were still knocked off their feet by the force.
Only a few advanced cultivators managed to hold their ground.
Exchanging glances, they suddenly threw caution to the wind and charged forward en masse. Luo Jinxiao remained calm; Wujie in her hands suddenly expanded several times, shimmering in the sunlight like crystalline ice as it spun and danced.
The group unleashed a flurry of techniques, attempting to encircle Luo Jinxiao. Their spiritual weapons swirled around her, but she simply flicked her sleeves to summon shards of frost from the summer air, causing their weapons to lose power and crash to the ground like frostbitten eggplants.
Only one woman remained attacking from a distance, wielding a seven-stringed zither made of charred wood. While her attack was not strong, it was capable of disturbing the mind.
Flames burst out from behind, darting past Luo Jinxiao and instantly turning the zither to ashes.
Qu Weiyin appeared at her right side, no longer holding back. The two of them—ice and fire, crimson and white—brought devastation to half the mountainside, creating patches of black and white, accompanied by wisps of dark smoke.
Despite their numerical advantage, the opposing faction quickly found themselves overwhelmed and began to flee in panic between the flames and ice.
“You will face retribution for this!†the middle-aged man shouted, gripping his sword as he struggled against the howling winds. “When we return to report this to the celestial realm and gather everyone, we will come back to capture this demon! At that time, I do not believe you will be so bold to resist!â€
As soon as he finished speaking, he suddenly retreated, his figure vanishing in an instant. The others, seeing that their leader had fled, did not dare to linger any longer and hastily followed suit amidst a chorus of curses, escaping in droves.
Luo Jinxiao hadn’t intended to pursue them to the ends of the earth. Spitting disdainfully, she gracefully landed on the fractured cliff, shaking off the dust that clung to her sleeves.
“Hypocrites,†she muttered under her breath as she tidied her clothes.
Beside her, a pair of hands gently reached out, helping her smooth down the sleeve that had flipped up, the touch soft and tentative.
“Jinxiao, I—â€
Luo Jinxiao raised an eyebrow, peering past her lashes at Qu Weiyin with a cold glare, her anger still simmering. Qu Weiyin, caught in that gaze, found her words faltering.
“You disappeared again. You always slip away without a word,†Luo Jinxiao said, lowering her voice as she shrugged off Qu Weiyin’s grasp.
This was the first time she had truly lost her temper at Qu Weiyin. The more she spoke, the more her thoughts clouded, and she found herself no longer choosing her words carefully.
“Qu Weiyin, what do you take me for? Why is it that you always make decisions on your own? Whether it’s killing Zhu Chengzhou or dealing with the Deathless Sect, you always leave me behind.â€
There was an undeniable edge in her voice as she called Qu Weiyin by her full name. At that moment, Qu Weiyin felt as if her heart had been struck by a heavy blow, trembling like a drum within her chest.
Qu Weiyin pressed her lips together tightly, and a wave of emotion surged up to her eyes, threatening to spill over, but she fought to keep it at bay.
“I have to guess at your feelings. Can’t you just take a moment to consider how I feel? I’m not a child who needs you to constantly shield her. Do you see me as an equal partner you can stand beside, or am I merely a distraction to you?â€
“Luo Jinxiao!†Qu Weiyin suddenly shouted in anger, taking a small step back. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, the delicate pink hue in her cheeks becoming more pronounced against her fair skin.
The frost that had just formed beneath her feet melted away, turning into damp mud with just a breath of warm wind.
Luo Jinxiao said nothing more, stifling the urge to cry. She abruptly averted her gaze and, turning around, flew away on her sword.
The red fabric of her attire billowed in the wind, resembling a flickering candle flame, beautifully outlining her slightly despondent figure. She moved swiftly, and within moments, she was nowhere to be seen.
Luo Jinxiao stood there, fuming for a while before muttering to herself, “I won’t seek you out again.”
She made her way down the mountain path and passed by Qiongqi, who was hiding nearby to watch the drama unfold. He grabbed her, and the two of them—one tall and one short—clumsily disappeared into the woods.
After a while, the two figures hurriedly returned, with Qiongqi stumbling occasionally under Luo Jinxiao’s pulling.
“Faster! Hurry up or we’ll lose her trail!†Luo Jinxiao shouted, her face clouded with irritation.
Qu Weiyin, in her anger, ran as swiftly as a falling star, leaving a lingering scent that Luo Jinxiao could follow. She hardly had time to turn back and inform Tang Lanner before she was dragging Qiongqi across the mountains.
Fortunately, Qu Weiyin had nowhere to go and continuously ran straight toward the demon realm. After a day and night of chasing, when Luo Jinxiao finally followed the lingering scent back to the small house, it was already the next day.
She wasn’t exhausted, but Qiongqi struggled to keep up with her speed in mid-air, nearly collapsing on the grass with a look of dismay directed at Luo Jinxiao.
“Serves you right,†Qiongqi pouted.
Luo Jinxiao rolled her eyes, the anger she carried for a day and a night dissipating, leaving behind only a sense of helplessness and worry.
Inside the house, everything remained unchanged, covered in thick dust, retaining the decorations from their wedding day.
Luo Jinxiao lingered at the entrance for a while, suddenly feeling that the short span of three years had been a fleeting illusion, leaving her with a sense of loss. For Qu Weiyin, this feeling must have been even more profound.
She shouldn’t have been angry with her.
Entering the house, Luo Jinxiao bent down to pick up the faded red veil that lay covered in dust on the ground. Shaking it gently, she caught a glimpse of its initial appearance amidst the yellow dust.
Qu Weiyin had worn it with a subtle smile, appearing carefree and human despite the red garment.
Luo Jinxiao felt torn inside. She couldn’t help but succumb to her anger, recalling Qu Weiyin’s gaze as she left—an expression of mixed emotions, filled with extreme grievance, which now made her heart ache.
With a deep sigh, Luo Jinxiao spoke aloud, “She’s not here; you sniff around some more.†She strode out, addressing Qiongqi.
Qiongqi stretched his neck and scurried around the area on his short legs, shaking his head.
“Can’t find her?†Luo Jinxiao questioned, puzzled. “She couldn’t have entered the demon realm, could she?â€
At that moment, she suddenly remembered that she hadn’t checked on the happenings in the demon realm. After the massacre, the demon king was gone, and she wondered if a new demon king had taken charge.
Without hesitation, Luo Jinxiao closed her eyes and silently chanted a phrase. When she opened them again, her eyes filled with divine energy, shimmering like the surface of water. She could clearly see the traces of the barrier.
Being a deity certainly had its benefits.
Luo Jinxiao pulled Qiongqi with her and swiftly stepped into the barrier.
However, as soon as she entered, large chunks of spiritual stones were hurled from all directions, exploding like firecrackers upon impact. Thanks to her quick reflexes, Luo Jinxiao ascended into the air, dodging the blast of energy.
At the same time, a robust tendril descended from above, coiling around her neck. Luo Jinxiao gasped, burying her head in the crook of her arm to evade disaster.
The smoke from the exploding spiritual stones had yet to dissipate when more tendrils lunged toward her, attacking wildly. Seeing that she couldn’t evade them, Luo Jinxiao pulled out Wujie and severed the tendrils in one swift motion.
Just as she thought she could finally breathe a sigh of relief, dark green liquid gushed from the severed ends of the tendrils. The unmistakable stench of poison filled the air, and Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but curse as she unleashed her divine energy to shield herself.
At that moment, a familiar voice called out urgently, shouting for her to “Stop!†The tone was tinged with a hint of panic.
As soon as the words fell, the tendrils dropped back down, slithering into the ground with rustling sounds, ceasing their venomous spray. Luo Jinxiao finally managed to land safely, while Qiongqi, who had been lifted up, tumbled down and transformed back into his beast form, rolling his eyes as he crawled into her pouch.
Luo Jinxiao raised her head, spotting a red figure standing not far away. The look of confusion in the figure’s eyes hadn’t yet faded, and after making eye contact with Luo Jinxiao, the figure turned and began to walk away.
“Little Master Uncle!†Luo Jinxiao exclaimed joyfully, hurriedly calling out to chase after her, but she was suddenly pulled back by someone who began searching her from head to toe.
Luo Jinxiao quickly covered her chest, astonished as she looked down.
“Xiuer?†she exclaimed, her eyes widening. When she looked up again, the tree spirit stood not far away, smiling warmly at her.
“What are you doing here?†Luo Jinxiao felt relief wash over her; she couldn’t help but smile as she took Xiuer’s hand. “It’s been three years! Did you two set up all these traps?â€
The tree spirit stepped forward confidently, her dark green hair secured with a flowering wooden hairpin. She took Xiuer and exchanged a glance before replying, “Yes. After the chaos in the demon realm that day, there were so many little demons left unattended. Xiuer and I decided to stay and help them. As a tree spirit, I can absorb the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, and it didn’t take long to restore this place to its original state.â€
“She’s been very happy today because she thought both you and Lady Qu had perished here,†the tree spirit said gently, patting Xiuer’s head affectionately.
“The demon realm has always lived in a secluded paradise and hasn’t focused on cultivation, which made them unable to protect themselves. So, we set up these traps as a makeshift defense,†the tree spirit explained, glancing over her shoulder before winking at Luo Jinxiao with her emerald eyes.
“You two must have had a falling out?†she asked.
Luo Jinxiao felt embarrassed and scratched her head.
“She just arrived not long ago. When I saw her, she was dazed in front of the little cabin in the forest, looking incredibly sad, so I invited her inside.â€
“Though I didn’t ask, I could roughly guess. The only thing that could make Lady Qu so heartbroken would be you,†the tree spirit shook her head lightly and gently nudged Luo Jinxiao, urging her to hurry and chase after Qu Weiyin.
“A couple that has become united should cherish each other, for that is not easy. Don’t harm one another any longer,†the tree spirit said softly.
Luo Jinxiao managed a bitter smile and thanked her before charging off in the direction Qu Weiyin had taken.
The summer in the demon realm was vibrant and colorful, with an abundance of flowers everywhere. As Luo Jinxiao ran into a sea of flowers, the thorns stung her calves painfully.
She leapt through the blooming landscape, making her way to the center of the floral display. As the wind blew, the multi-colored petals danced like waves, creating a breathtaking view.
From a distance, she spotted a straight figure standing among the flowers, surrounded by fluttering white butterflies, the scene picturesque and ethereal.
Upon seeing her, Luo Jinxiao dashed forward, appearing right in front of Qu Weiyin and blocking her path.
“My heavens, you really can run,†she exclaimed almost involuntarily.
Qu Weiyin held a six-petal flower in her hand and regarded her coldly.
“Little Master Uncle…†Luo Jinxiao softened her tone, playfully leaning against her.
“Get away,†Qu Weiyin responded, shifting her shoulder slightly. Her eyes were still red, and she added, “Didn’t you say I don’t love you? Why chase after me then?â€
Although her words were harsh, her eyes betrayed her true feelings.
“If you truly thought that, how could you say such things? If I saw you as merely a distraction, why would I wait seven or eight years for you? I could return now and be the demon lord, surrounded by beautiful men and women—what need would I have for you?â€
As she spoke, a few drops of dew fell from the flower in her hand.
“You stupidly cling to hope,†Qu Weiyin muttered under her breath.
“I’m sorry, I’m really sorry! I just got flustered and wasn’t thinking straight,†Luo Jinxiao said, scratching her head as she moved a step closer. “I’m afraid—afraid that you’ll always risk yourself without telling me.â€
“I don’t want to lose you,†Luo Jinxiao bit her lip, blinking her eyes as she squeezed out a few tears.
Qu Weiyin noticed her tearful eyes and instinctively raised her hand, but then she forcefully dropped it, scolding, “If you’re afraid, then I’m afraid too. With my temperament, what if I end up… What do you want me to do?â€
“That’s why I won’t take action. I don’t want to kill,†Qu Weiyin declared. “I’d rather be bullied than put you at risk. But you, on the other hand, come here to provoke me.â€
As Qu Weiyin spoke, she couldn’t help but reach out, softly brushing her hand beneath Luo Jinxiao’s eyes to wipe away the tears that had gathered.
Seeing her soften, Luo Jinxiao immediately clutched her leg, exclaiming in exaggerated pain, “Oh no, oh no!â€
Qu Weiyin was startled and quickly looked down, lifting her skirt to check. She noticed several cuts on her delicate, fair legs caused by the thorns.
Her tone immediately shifted to one of urgency as she reached out to smooth over the wounds, scolding, “What happened? You’re a deity; why don’t you know to protect yourself?â€
“I was just anxious!†Luo Jinxiao pouted, her lips forming into a pout.
Qu Weiyin rubbed her injuries gently, letting out a long sigh. Straightening up, she fixed her phoenix-like eyes on Luo Jinxiao, ultimately relenting.
“From now on, I’ll tell you everything. I won’t go off on my own anymore—will that be alright?†She tucked a strand of Luo Jinxiao’s wild hair behind her ear, just like she always did.
Luo Jinxiao’s face lit up with joy as she nodded vigorously. She suddenly hugged Qu Weiyin tightly, clasping her hands around her, and then leaned in to kiss her forehead.
Qu Weiyin instinctively dodged and lost her footing, causing both of them to tumble to the ground. Luo Jinxiao gasped in surprise, instinctively rolling in mid-air and using her back to cushion their fall, crushing a patch of thorns beneath her.
Qu Weiyin’s slender waist and delicate shoulders landed directly in Luo Jinxiao’s embrace.
She stared wide-eyed at the sky, gasping sharply as a frown creased her brow, a whimper creeping into her voice.
“It hurts, Little Master Uncle!â€
