Luo Jinxiao found herself at a loss for words under Qu Weiyin’s penetrating gaze.
“And since this is Changming Tower, I can probably guess what the Sect Master has instructed you to retrieve,†Qu Weiyin said, her eyes drifting across the dense forest to the distance.
Without allowing Luo Jinxiao a chance to respond, she took up her sword and began walking into the woodland to the north.
The four of them once again soared on their swords, and before long, the spruces below them began to thin out. Eventually, they entered an open plain where the grass was lightly dusted with snow, resembling a layer of white carpeting.
Luo Jinxiao noticed that as they progressed, the presence of demons and beasts around them grew faint, as if they were deliberately avoiding some impending danger.
Climbing over a small hill, a massive, flat building suddenly came into view, resembling a sail raised on the sea. It was battered by rain and wind, a dull gray obscuring its form, marked by signs of dust and corrosion from storms.
Beyond the hill, for hundreds of miles, everything was blanketed in white, stretching out straight into the distance. The further they moved forward, the more they could sense a powerful barrier, like an inflated bubble, through which there was chaotic movement.
Surprise filled Luo Jinxiao’s eyes while Lu Fanzhi beside her gasped, her mouth agape as she looked upward. “Is this really Changming Tower? But why doesn’t it look bright? It doesn’t even resemble a tower!â€
“Inside Changming Tower, it’s perpetually illuminated. The intense heat dries out the demons and monsters that enter, turning them into spiritual energy that nurtures the heavens and earth,†Luo Ning chimed in suddenly, gazing up in awe, her lashes fluttering slightly.
Luo Jinxiao glanced at her but said nothing.
“All right, you all wait here,†Qu Weiyin instructed as she stepped forward, approaching the entrance of Changming Tower.
Luo Jinxiao hurried to call after her, but before she could speak, Qu Weiyin’s figure had disappeared.
“Elder Sister, what should we do?†Luo Ning caught up with her, her expression anxious. “Are we really just going to wait here while Master Uncle takes a risk alone?â€
“How could I let her go in alone? This time, I refuse to listen!†Luo Jinxiao declared. “Luo Ning, you and Lu Fanzhi wait for us or head back first; we’ll be back shortly.†With that, her figure transformed into a beam of white light, vanishing from sight.
Lu Fanzhi shouted after her, but her voice fell on deaf ears. Scratching her head in confusion, she muttered, “So, what are we supposed to do…â€
Seeing that Luo Jinxiao had also entered, Luo Ning was even more anxious and stomped her feet. She glanced up at the strange, gigantic “sail†structure before gritting her teeth and sprinting a few steps, her light blue skirt fluttering as she followed them into the tower.
“Luo Ning! Luo Jinxiao! Master Uncle Qu!†Lu Fanzhi exclaimed, feeling overwhelmed. In a matter of moments, everyone had disappeared.
She looked back at the densely packed spruce forest and then turned to the swirling aura of the barrier, her face contorting in distress, almost to the point of tears.
“You’ve got to be kidding me—am I really left all alone again?â€
While Lu Fanzhi felt helpless, Luo Jinxiao landed safely inside the tower. With a flick of her hand, the Nu Jue spun into her palm, which she grasped firmly.
At that moment, Luo Ning also appeared at her side. As soon as she landed, a violent gust of demon wind knocked her off balance; fortunately, Luo Jinxiao caught her elbow to steady her.
“How did you end up following me in?†Luo Jinxiao scolded in a low voice.
Luo Ning said nothing but tugged at her sleeve.
Luo Jinxiao sighed, not pressing the matter further; after all, she couldn’t blame others for not listening when she had acted impulsively herself.
Changming Tower lived up to its name; the brilliance was indeed blinding, and a searing wave of heat washed over them. Without expending her spiritual energy, Luo Jinxiao found herself sweating profusely in no time.
The Nu Jue she held began to drip with moisture, and Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but chuckle as she looked at it. “Wow, even you’re sweating, huh?â€
However, apart from the blinding white light, there was nothing else—an empty expanse where Luo Jinxiao had no idea where Qu Weiyin had gone. When she tried to use her spiritual energy to probe her surroundings, she was repelled by the surging demon aura from all directions.
Just as she was in a state of frustration, her attention was drawn to a small, black object that seemed to have emerged from nowhere.
Luo Ning also spotted it and stepped closer for a better look, curiously asking, “That looks like a black feathered chicken?â€
“What chicken has such a long tail? Could it also be a demon?†Luo Jinxiao, having never seen anything like it, crouched down to observe alongside her. “But it doesn’t have any demonic energy.â€
The black chicken seemed agitated and squawked at them before scampering away on its thin legs, moving surprisingly fast until it vanished into the white light.
Luo Jinxiao and Luo Ning exchanged glances, then followed suit. This strange feathered creature might have been here for a long time and could potentially know the way.
As they stepped into the blinding light, Luo Jinxiao felt hesitant to open her eyes. Even the slightest hint of brightness made her feel as if she might go blind. She quickly tore off two strips of cloth from her clothing, tying one around her eyes and handing the other to Luo Ning to alleviate the discomfort somewhat.
Through the makeshift blindfold, she could vaguely see the figure of the black chicken, so she gathered her robe and picked up the pace, jogging behind it. The glaring light made it impossible to see where they were going, and she stumbled along the way, occasionally stepping on broken bones.
After a short while, the black chicken finally came to a stop. It shook its body and spat out a small creature—it appeared to be a rabbit. The rabbit seemed terrified and immediately tried to flee upon landing.
At that moment, a hand reached out from seemingly nowhere, precisely grabbing the rabbit by its ears and effortlessly lifting it. Another hand twisted, and the rabbit’s neck was snapped instantly.
Luo Ning suddenly gasped in shock at the sight. The figure noticed their presence and abruptly discarded the rabbit, appearing in front of them in an instant. A pair of bloody, sharp claws shot toward their heads.
The aura emanating from this creature was overwhelmingly powerful, yet a familiar presence intertwined with the demonic energy. Luo Jinxiao had no time to ponder; she quickly dropped low to evade the attack. When the figure saw its strike missed, it suddenly produced a pale purple long whip, swinging it down towards Luo Jinxiao.
Luo Jinxiao spread her hands as her spiritual energy enveloped her palm. In an instant, she caught the whip as it lashed out, sending sparks flying from the impact.
“Luo Ning! Get back!†Luo Jinxiao shouted loudly.
To Luo Jinxiao’s surprise, as soon as she shouted, the figure opposite her hesitated, released the force in the whip, and then, without a second thought, turned to run.
Luo Jinxiao stood there in a daze, still holding the limp whip.
“Why is she running?†Luo Jinxiao asked.
Luo Ning’s expression appeared rather strange. Suddenly, she lifted her skirt and dashed forward, her petite figure quickly becoming a blur within the blinding white light. Worried for her safety, Luo Jinxiao hurried after her.
After running a few steps, she glanced up at the sky, then leaped into the air, performing a somersault before landing. She raised her hand to block the figure’s path. This time, the figure didn’t fight back but instead changed directions to continue running, only to be intercepted by Luo Ning again.
Now, there was truly no escape.
“Why are you running? We’re not here to kill!†Luo Jinxiao thought the situation was odd. However, with the cloth covering her eyes, she couldn’t make out the person’s face clearly. All she could discern was that the figure was quite disheveled, with hair sticking out in all directions and her dress hastily wrapped.
After a moment of silence, the figure still refused to speak.
Could she be mute? Luo Jinxiao thought, stepping closer to lift the hair blocking the person’s face, only to be startled by a sudden outburst.
“Get your filthy hands off me!†the person shouted, suppressing her voice.
Despite her attempts to mask her identity, Luo Jinxiao could tell that it was, in fact, Yan Ying.
Luo Jinxiao was taken aback. Blinking in surprise, she tentatively asked, “Yan Ying? What are you doing in this godforsaken place?â€
“I’ve been wondering where you’ve been all this time these past five years. I never imagined you’d be here catching rabbits to eat!†Luo Ning added coldly, crossing her arms as she stood at a distance.
Yan Ying was at a loss for words. Avoiding Luo Ning’s gaze, she turned to Luo Jinxiao and said, “I’m here under orders to guard Changming Tower. What are you doing here? After five years of not seeing you, you’re still a worthless waste, yet you managed to survive?”
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t be bothered to argue with her, simply inquiring, “Do you know where the demons are kept around here?â€
Yan Ying clapped her hands, and the black-feathered chicken waddled over, flapping its wings before perching on her shoulder.
Oh, so it turns out this isn’t even a chicken; it’s Yan Ying’s filthy peacock.
“Looking for demons? Are you trying to invite disaster upon yourself, deliberately seeking them out after narrowly escaping death?â€
“Just tell me,†Luo Jinxiao said, her impatience showing.
“Alright, alright,†Yan Ying rolled her eyes and wiped her face. “Ordinary demons don’t last long in here; they melt away quickly. Only extraordinary beings manage to survive. I usually avoid going in there, but if you really want to, head in that direction.â€
She pointed to a dark spot in the distance.
“However, I won’t accompany you. This probably marks our last meeting, so take care—no need for a send-off.†She said this with a hint of schadenfreude.
“Thanks.†Luo Jinxiao felt anxious about Qu Weiyin and hurried off, with Luo Ning trailing closely behind her.
Seeing this, Yan Ying suddenly shouted, “Luo Jinxiao, if you’re looking for death, you can go on your own. Why drag Luo Ning into this?â€
Before Luo Jinxiao could respond, Luo Ning turned around and replied fiercely, “We have already become like strangers; why do you care what I do?â€
After saying that, Luo Ning turned and ran off in a huff, even faster than Luo Jinxiao.
Yan Ying stood there scratching her head, mumbling some curses under her breath before quickly catching up.
The path Yan Ying indicated was indeed correct. Soon, Luo Jinxiao felt the thick aura of demons surrounding them, accompanied by an increasing heat, as if they were being roasted by intense flames.
At that moment, the sound of a baby crying echoed through the air, making Luo Jinxiao’s scalp tingle. She frowned and halted, asking, “What kind of demon beast is this?â€
“I’m not sure, but it’s said to have been trapped here since ancient times, for over ten thousand years. I advise you to take a detour and not provoke it,†Yan Ying warned.
As Luo Jinxiao listened, she began to feel a bit dazed. Quickly, she stuffed two strips of cloth into her ears, effectively muffling the sounds around her. Now, she was both blind and deaf to some extent.
She only vaguely felt as if she were walking down a fiery corridor, the baby cries still echoing around her. Despite the blinding light, it sent chills down her spine.
Suddenly, the ground shook violently, the tremors so severe they nearly propelled her into the air. Luo Jinxiao jumped up, hovering in the air to avoid being affected.
“Is this the path you led us down?” Luo Jinxiao frowned, trying to sense what was happening while steadying the Nu Jue in her hand.
“I’ve been down this path many times without incident! What’s going on today?†Yan Ying cursed loudly. She pulled Luo Ning aside just in time to dodge a sudden falling rock. When the rock hit the ground, sparks flew, followed by a thunderous explosion.
Luo Jinxiao quickly formed a barrier with her spiritual energy. The searing flames seemed to singe her hair, and she encased herself in frost to soothe her skin, which felt close to being burnt.
Amidst the billowing smoke and dust, she heard Yan Ying shout, “Someone has broken into Changming Tower! Be careful!â€
Then, she could no longer hear any sounds from the outside world, only the baby cries reverberating in her mind, sending a chill down her spine. Surrounded by flames and blinding white light, she felt like a headless fly charging aimlessly.
“Luo Ning!†She called out twice but received no reply. Gritting her teeth, she landed, using an ice shield to protect herself while closing her eyes and trudging forward.
The sound of the baby seemed to manipulate her emotions, making her dizzy.
Unable to find Luo Ning or Yan Ying, she decided to run through the flames, trying to distance herself from the demon beast.
Suddenly, through the cloth covering her eyes, she spotted a figure standing ahead, dressed in red and surrounded by the raging fire. The flames seemed to dance in her hair, which glowed with an ethereal light as she stood there, looking down imperiously.
“Master Uncle?†Luo Jinxiao exclaimed in surprise.
Abruptly, the figure in red raised her hand, and the Moonlight Star Sword appeared, emanating a dazzling red light that outshone the flames below. Dark, menacing energy radiated from her, characteristic of the Demon Lord.
Luo Jinxiao froze, unable to discern whether the scene before her was real or an illusion.
In the next instant, the brilliant sword shot into the air and, without warning, pierced the chest of the woman in red.
Luo Jinxiao felt a sudden chill fill her entire being, her instincts propelling her forward. Without thinking, she grabbed the woman’s arm and pulled her back, discovering that it was Qu Weiyin.
Her complexion was as pale and translucent as it had been five years ago when she had died, her appearance frail and weak.
Luo Jinxiao felt faint, almost collapsing to the ground. Her hands trembled as she reached out to touch Qu Weiyin’s face, which was marred with blood and tears.
Injured and overwhelmed, Qu Weiyin suddenly broke free from Luo Jinxiao’s grasp, attempting to flee. But by then, Luo Jinxiao, having lost some of her mental clarity, gritted her teeth and yanked Qu Weiyin back, pinning her against the wall.
She couldn’t articulate the emotions swirling within her—was it despair, or madness? With both hands gripping Qu Weiyin’s wrists, she pressed her against the wall and channeled her spiritual energy into Qu Weiyin’s body.
“Luo Jinxiao, let go!†Qu Weiyin’s voice sounded as if it came from another world, fierce yet tinged with urgency and embarrassment.
“You’ve lost your mind! Let go!”
Suddenly, a sweet taste brushed against her lips as a round, cool pill rolled down her throat, while soft lips covered hers.
Luo Jinxiao felt her body stiffen as she realized she was unsure if it was the pill that took effect or something else, but the chaos in her mind abruptly ceased, and the surrounding flames vanished.
As the soft, fragrant lips quickly pulled away, Luo Jinxiao finally had clear visibility of her surroundings. She found herself gripping Qu Weiyin’s wrist tightly, binding her in an embrace, with her back pressed firmly against the wall.
Qu Weiyin’s clothes were disheveled, her hair flowing loosely over her shoulders. Her cold phoenix eyes bore into Luo Jinxiao, holding a hint of red in them, indicating her agitation.
However, the sword was not lodged in her chest, and she radiated no demonic energy, though her anger was undeniable.
“Master Uncle…†Luo Jinxiao stammered, momentarily dazed.
“Don’t call me that!†Qu Weiyin exclaimed, both flustered and furious, breaking free from Luo Jinxiao’s grip and shoving her away with force.
