About half an hour later, Qiongqi returned, lightly landing on the ground with a look of satisfaction on her face, holding onto someone.
The person was wrapped in a black robe, his hands bound, thrashing violently before he rolled onto the ground.
“Why are you capturing me? Let me go!†The man was of slight build, with a hooked nose and unkempt, dirty hair. He glared at Luo Jinxiao, glaring fiercely as he spoke.
“That was fast,†Luo Jinxiao muttered to herself. She stood up and walked over to the man, crouching down in front of him.
As Luo Jinxiao approached, a deep fear suddenly welled up within the man, causing him to awkwardly fall silent.
“Where did you catch him?†Luo Jinxiao asked.
“At the foot of the mountain,†Qiongqi replied.
Nodding, Luo Jinxiao suddenly drew Wu Jue, pressing the blade against the man’s throat and asking coolly, “Why are you near the Wuhui Sect?â€
The man remained silent, tightly shutting his mouth.
Luo Jinxiao twisted the sword, and the sharp edge instantly cut a line across his neck, black demonic energy oozing from the wound. The man winced in pain and quickly cried for mercy.
Luo Jinxiao halted her actions, saying lazily, “If you don’t want to die, answer honestly.â€
“I… I’m just here on orders, observing the movements of the Wuhui Sect nearby. I haven’t killed anyone or done any bad deeds; please don’t kill me,†the man pleaded, hurriedly trying to scoot away from the sharp sword.
“Who issued the orders?â€
The man glanced around nervously, hoping to escape, but when he realized there was no way out, he grimaced and replied, “It’s an order from above; I’m just a newly formed little demon. Please let me go.â€
Luo Jinxiao studied him for a moment before asking again, “Where is the entrance to the demon realm?â€
“This… The entrance to the demon realm is heavily guarded; you wouldn’t be able to get in.â€
Luo Jinxiao was too lazy to waste more words on him. She pressed the sword harder against his throat, causing him to wail like a pig being slaughtered. “I’ll take you there, just don’t kill me!â€
Having received her answer, Luo Jinxiao sheathed Wu Jue and signaled for Qiongqi to continue binding the man.
Lu Fanzhi, mouth agape, approached Luo Jinxiao cautiously and asked, “You’re planning to go into the demon realm?â€
Luo Jinxiao nodded, brushing the dirt off her sword.
“The demon realm is incredibly dangerous! How about I go with you?†Lu Fanzhi expressed her concerns.
Luo Jinxiao shook her head. She intended to sneak into the demon realm alone to ascertain whether Qu Weiyin had truly become what the rumors said, as it would be simpler to do it on her own.
“I’ll leave tomorrow. You and Yan Ying take care of Luo Ning while I’m away,†Luo Jinxiao stated as she tucked her sword away.
“What’s with the sudden decision? You’ve only just returned, and if you meet…†Lu Fanzhi began, but her words trailed off abruptly.
Luo Jinxiao understood what she meant but chose not to answer. Instead, she made her way back to the sect leader’s bamboo hut.
“Where has your master been for these three years? She seems completely transformed,†Lu Fanzhi remarked, turning to Qiongqi with a whisper as she watched Luo Jinxiao’s retreating figure.
Inside, there was a calm atmosphere. The sect leader sat by, quietly observing as Yan Ying tried to feed medication to Luo Ning.
Her gaze was tender, as if she were peering through the years and witnessing a reflection of her younger self.
“I’m not drinking that anymore!†Luo Ning said, pouting as she pushed Yan Ying’s hand away, her little face scrunched up in distaste. “Why is it so bitter?â€
“It’s the Complete Restoration Soup. Look at you, you’re so weak; you need to take it to nourish yourself,†Yan Ying replied cheerfully.
Luo Jinxiao stood at the door for a while before finally walking over to sit beside the sect leader.
“I’m back,†she said quietly.
“Mm, I heard,†the sect leader smiled and replied.
“I’m planning to leave tomorrow to go to the demon realm,†Luo Jinxiao said softly.
At her words, the sect leader’s long eyelashes lifted in surprise, her voice tinged with concern, “What do you intend to do in the demon realm? Are you trying to find her?â€
Luo Jinxiao remained silent, which was an acknowledgment.
The sect leader hesitated before speaking, ultimately choosing to remain quiet. She let out a gentle sigh, her cool fingers resting on Luo Jinxiao’s shoulder.
“I know she doesn’t remember me,†Luo Jinxiao said softly, “but I still need to go see for myself. What if…â€
“Alright, but it’s best to be cautious. If you run into any danger, just crush this,†the sect leader said, handing her a piece of spiritual stone.
“I know you are now a god, and your strength far exceeds mine, but circumstances can change. It might be hard for you to act against Qu Weiyin,†she added.
“Thank you, Sect Leader.†Luo Jinxiao smiled warmly.
The sect leader extended her hand, as if to smooth Luo Jinxiao’s hair but halted, leaving her hand suspended in mid-air for a moment. Eventually, she retracted it, pretending nothing had happened.
“We’ll be waiting for your return.â€
Uncertain how to interact with others at that moment, Luo Jinxiao didn’t say goodbye to Luo Ning or her fellow disciples. That night, she set off with Qiongqi, leaving the Wuhui Sect behind.
Following the directions given by the demon they had captured, they headed south until they reached Luyang Prefecture.
Compared to the bustling scene Luo Jinxiao had previously witnessed, Luyang Prefecture now seemed chaotic and disorderly. The streets were nearly deserted, and despite being midsummer, the place exuded an air of desolation. When the wind blew, it kicked up clouds of dust and filth.
The common folk were deeply affected by the turmoil; ordinary women and children dared not venture outside. Thanks to the protection and aid of nearby sects, they managed to survive.
Only a few brave mortals passed through occasionally, and even they hurried by, afraid to linger too long.
Luo Jinxiao stood at the side of the long street for a while, suddenly feeling the profound changes around her.
The last time she had visited this place, she had been filled with joy, eagerly awaiting a meeting with Qu Weiyin. Now, however, although she was searching for Qu Weiyin again, her mindset was vastly different.
She learned from the captured demon that the entrance to the demon realm would only open at night. Thus, she decided to linger for a few more hours, looking for an open shop to rest her feet.
After wandering through a long street, she finally found a teahouse around the corner. It looked equally desolate, with only a few patrons seated, all of whom appeared to be cultivators.
It was no surprise; without some form of spell, who would dare leisurely sip tea in times like this?
Luo Jinxiao found a seat by the window, sipping her tea while quietly listening to the conversations nearby.
“What are we going to do? We’ve been wandering here for two whole days, and we haven’t seen the young master or even any of the young master’s attendants. What if they really have been captured by the demon clan?†one person whispered anxiously.
“It’s hard to say. I’ve already sent someone back to inform the sect leader. For now, we can only wait. What kind of place is the demon realm? If we went in there, we’d be lucky to survive. I just hope the young master has good fortune and nothing happens to her,†one of them sighed.
Young master? Luo Jinxiao turned her teacup in her hands, wondering if Tang Lanner was really that unfortunate. She had been captured and taken into the demon realm last time—could it possibly happen again?
However, the people in the conversation were dressed plainly, making it impossible to identify their sect.
Suddenly, Luo Jinxiao stood up and approached their table, lightly tapping the edge.
The group looked up at the sound, momentarily captivated by Luo Jinxiao, who was dressed in white. Realizing she was a girl, they kindly advised her, “Young lady, Luyang Prefecture is not safe at the moment. You must be from out of town; it’s best to return home as soon as possible. If worse comes to worst, find an inn—don’t wander outside.â€
“Thank you,†Luo Jinxiao replied, nodding. Then she asked, “The young master you mentioned, is she…?â€
“We’re from the Baiyue Sect. Our young master is the renowned Tang Lanner. Just a few days ago, she went to Luyang Prefecture to deliver supplies and has since gone missing. We’ve been searching for her for several days without any sign,†one of the men explained, his expression filled with worry and helplessness.
Taking her hand back, Luo Jinxiao thought to herself that it had to be Tang Lanner.
It appeared she would need to find her once she entered the demon realm—she hoped that Tang Lanner wouldn’t fall prey to any demons.
As dusk quickly approached, the members of the Baiyue Sect packed their belongings, preparing to leave before the sun set. Before they departed, they warned Luo Jinxiao once more to leave early.
The teahouse owner, an elderly man, began closing up for the night. As he shut the door, he leaned on his waist and spoke to Luo Jinxiao, “Child, you should hurry home. The sun is about to set. Once it goes down, the demons will emerge. Just behind this street, there are often people who go missing. You need to be careful!â€
Luo Jinxiao thanked the owner lightly and stepped out of the teahouse, turning towards the back of the street as he had instructed.
Navigating through several winding alleys, the sun disappeared entirely, leaving the surroundings shrouded in somber darkness punctuated by the occasional chilling breeze that raised goosebumps on her skin.
Luo Jinxiao stood alone in a corner, holding her breath in anticipation.
It seemed that the demon hadn’t deceived her. Soon, a swirling vortex formed in the center of the street, appearing as a pitch-black archway. Countless demons poured out from it, vanishing into the night sky in an instant, heading who knows where.
When the flow of demons finally ceased, Luo Jinxiao stepped into the vortex. The scene before her flipped upside down, and she turned head over heels in midair, landing steadily on the desolate ground.
The demon realm appeared much as it had during her last visit—the sky stained a deep crimson, the ground barren except for a few withered stalks of grass, lying limp against the earth.
Before her, occasional deep crevices graced the landscape, the ground cracked and filled with sand. Here and there, bare hills rose abruptly from the ground, forcing her to navigate around them.
Luo Jinxiao made her way towards the area thickest with demonic energy. After a short walk, a huge structure came into view, towering up into the blood-red sky. It seemed to be a palace, but the walls were worn, covered in cracks, both imposing and ancient.
Her heart skipped a beat; if her guess was right, this had to be the place where the demon lord resided.
These three years, while she had lost consciousness, must have been incredibly difficult for Qu Weiyin.
She still remembered what Qu Weiyin had said about the monotonous, unchanging landscapes of the demon realm—it was utterly tedious.
Luo Jinxiao wondered what Qu Weiyin had become in her absence.
Suddenly, a few armored demons approached from ahead, and Luo Jinxiao instinctively hid behind the hillside. A spark of inspiration struck her as she summoned a silvery light in her palm, which she then cast over her face.
When she lowered her hand again, her once dark eyes had turned brown, and her fair skin had darkened considerably, transforming her appearance into an unremarkable one, though she retained her original height.
Her divine power allowed her to seamlessly disguise herself as a demon without revealing any flaws.
The group of demons walked right past her, and one of them grabbed her arm and pulled her forward.
“Who are you? Just transformed?†the leader barked.
Luo Jinxiao feigned a look of terror and nodded slightly.
Another demon scrutinized her from head to toe before quietly saying to the leader, “I think she’ll do. The demon lord has too high of standards; we can’t have anyone who looks too much like a demon or else they won’t qualify—this one has two eyes, one nose, and only one mouth. She’s passable.â€
“Well, anyone we send in will be dead in less than twenty days, so let’s just grab anyone to fill the numbers,†the first responded dismissively.
The leader squinted his four eyes, feeling this reasoning made sense. He suddenly grinned, showing his teeth. “You’re lucky! You get to serve the demon lord, so hurry up and follow!â€
Before Luo Jinxiao had a chance to speak, she felt a blur in front of her vision, and she was pulled along with them into the demon palace.
She stumbled for a moment before regaining her balance, silently glancing up to survey the interior of the temple. It was vast, with every word echoing throughout. She realized she was in the foyer, where several girls were already standing.
“You, go with them. Do whatever they tell you. If you dare to run, be prepared to have your neck broken by the demon lord,†one of the armored demons warned as he shoved Luo Jinxiao roughly.
Luo Jinxiao pretended to stumble forward a few steps, but when she turned back, the armored demons had already vanished.
The palace was spacious, but there were armored guards lining the pathways. Luo Jinxiao fell in behind the other girls as they slowly made their way inside.
“Hey, were you captured too?†a girl at the back asked, her hair flowing loosely, her eyes having a milky whiteness to them. The faint demonic energy she emitted indicated that she had also recently transformed.
Luo Jinxiao nodded in response.
“You need to be cautious. I’ve heard that the demon lord has a terrible temper; if things don’t go her way, she’ll send people away without a second thought. Meanwhile, Lord Yougui is quite gentle and kind. If given the chance, I’d like to go to him instead,†the girl remarked, her eyes almost sparkling with admiration.
Luo Jinxiao rolled her eyes at the mention of Yougui. Just hearing the name made her grind her teeth in frustration. The thought of Yougui spending all this time by Qu Weiyin’s side for the past three years only fueled her anger further.
The group walked for quite a while before finally entering a grand hall that was adorned with various decorations. Armored demons stood all around, brandishing weapons and exuding a fearsome aura.
At the far end of the hall, a stone table was placed, laden with fruits and a jug of wine.
“The demon lord is here!†someone quietly announced, and the girls immediately straightened up, standing at attention.
Luo Jinxiao, however, abruptly lifted her head and turned towards the entrance.
A pair of embroidered shoes with golden thread stepped into view, delicately making contact with the ground. Following that, a long skirt swept across the threshold, billowing gracefully. The long sleeves fluttered like the wind, and a slender waist was clasped gently, with delicate hands hanging at either side.
Someone rushed forward to take Qu Weiyin’s hand, respectfully guiding her into the great hall. The hem of her skirt swayed with each step, and the red bead necklace framing her forehead chimed softly in rhythm.
Luo Jinxiao’s eyes widened, and she forgot to pay her respects.
She struggled to suppress the overwhelming urge to rush forward and embrace her.
Qu Weiyin hasn’t changed at all. She still wore that striking red garment, with charm radiating from her every feature. A slight lift of her head revealed her phoenix-like eyes, capable of ensnaring souls.
Qu Weiyin slowly approached the stone table, her graceful shoulders twirled as she flicked her skirt behind her. Her gaze landed squarely on Luo Jinxiao.
Luo Jinxiao stared at her intently, unable to tear her eyes away.
Qu Weiyin observed for a moment before suddenly raising her hand. Luo Jinxiao felt a sharp pain in her back, as if an immense weight had forced her to bow her head and bend down.
A pang of hurt struck her heart because in Qu Weiyin’s eyes, there was nothing but indifference and distance.
“Why are these newcomers so unruly?†Qu Weiyin remarked coldly as she swayed her robe and took a seat.
“Isn’t that for the demon lord to decide? If someone isn’t to your liking, just send them away,†a slightly familiar female voice replied. Startled, Luo Jinxiao raised her head again.
Standing beside Qu Weiyin was none other than her former disciple, what was her name? Qingyi.
Now, she had transformed from a pure and innocent girl to someone clad in sheer, flowing garments that made her look exceedingly alluring.
She hadn’t died?
Luo Jinxiao clenched her fists in frustration.
“Here, demon lord, have some tea. This is your favorite,†Qingyi said playfully, biting her lip as she picked up a teacup and brought it to Qu Weiyin’s lips.
Qu Weiyin instinctively recoiled slightly and glanced at Qingyi, her eyes betraying a hint of revulsion; however, she ultimately parted her lips and drank.
A wave of fury suddenly surged within Luo Jinxiao. Just as the teacup reached Qu Weiyin’s lips, it shattered into powder.
Ceramic shards and spilled tea scattered across Qu Weiyin, soaking her attire.
Qu Weiyin was momentarily taken aback, her long eyelashes fluttering in disbelief. Then she instinctively looked up, and Luo Jinxiao quickly averted her gaze.
It was over—she couldn’t hold back anymore.
