The week went by extremely fast and before Kai knew it, it was Friday. During school Kai was very jittery and anxious and Nicolas had noticed immediately. When he asked Kai about it the boy would only smile and say nothing before hugging him.
Kai decided to wear a light blue button down with some black jeans. He walked to his mirror and tentatively fixed his hair. When he looked at his face he could tell how anxious he was and took a deep breath to calm down.
Everything would be fine.
He looked at the mirror again and rolled back his shoulder to straighten up and decided to practice what he would say. He cleared his throat before confidently saying, “I like you Nic.”
“I don’t.”
Kai gasped and turned around and panicked when he saw his brother standing there with a massive grin.
“W-what are you doing here?” He asked trying to calm down.
His brother ignored him and walked in his room, sitting down on his bed, “so you finally figured it out, huh?”
“Figured out what?” Kai asked trying to play dumb.
“I like you Nic. I like you sooo much! Please kiss me Nicolas!” Lee said trying to mimic Kai’s voice and then bursting out laughing when he saw Kai’s panicked and red face.
“Shut up!” Kai yelled trying to get rid of his blush as he hit his brother’s head.
“Wait..” Kai’s eyes widened with realization.
“You know…”
“Yes…I know. I’ve known actually.” Lee said more softly and Kai groaned.
“How?” He asked sitting down next to his brother. “Don’t tell me it’s the way I look at him.”
Lee smiled but shook his head. “That’s part of it but you’re my little brother and I’ve lived with you for seventeen years how could I not know?”
“So you don’t care that I like..boys?” Kai asked meekly and Lee softly punched his arm.
“Of course not Kai. I don’t care who you like as long as they treat you right and I know Nicolas very well he’s even more protective of you then I am. If there’s one person I trust to be with you then that’s Nicolas.” Lee said and Kai smiled widely, reaching forward and hugging his brother.
“I love you.” He mumbled and Lee smiled hugging back his baby brother, “I love you too.”
“Are you going to tell mom and dad?” Lee asked after pulling away and Kai shrugged.
“I..don’t know. But first I want to tell Nicolas everything and then I’ll think about mom and dad.” Kai said, he did feel guilty about not telling his parents but he wanted Nicolas to be there with him as he did it.
He wasn’t scared of his parents reaction because they always taught him that people can love whoever they want no matter the gender and that he should never judge someone because of who they like. But he still wanted Nicolas to be there.
“So you’re planning on confessing your deep precious feelings to Nicolas today?” Lee teased and Kai blushed but nodded his head.
“I’ll do it after dinner.” He said and Lee smiled.
“Good luck and if it doesn’t go great just kick him out of our house and don’t give him leftovers.” He said and Kai looked at him with wide eyes.
“You think it’ll go badly?” He asked.
“No, I’m just kidding! Relax there’s no way someone can reject you. Look at that pretty face.” Lee said pointing at Kai’s face and the latter groaned hiding his face.
“BOYS! Come down and help set the table!” Their mom screamed from downstairs and they did as told.
Kai immediately went in the kitchen to help his mom finish up on the cooking. He helped his mom to cook that morning and even made the whole pumpkin pie himself and he was beyond exited for everyone to try it.
“The pie looks great sweetheart. Thank you for making it.” His mom said, turning to look at him and he beamed.
“Of course mom.” Kai replied and then started setting up some of the food on the table as their guests were going to arrive soon.
On cue the doorbell rang and Kai almost dropped the cranberry sauce he was holding.
“Easy there.” Arabella, his brothers fiancée, said coming over and taking it from his hands and setting it on the table for him.
“Why don’t you go and open the door.” She asked with a smile and he nodded taking a shaky breath before going over to the front door.
He opened the door and smiled at Luciana, who was wearing a pretty black dress before turning to Nicolas who’s outfit matched his mother’s. He was wearing a new black button up and black jeans. His hair was perfect as usual and he smiled brightly at Kai.
“Hi! Happy thanksgiving, please come in.” He politely said and motioned them in. Luciana gave him a small smile, “happy thanksgiving, thank you for having us over.”
He smiled back and waited for her to walk in further in the house but she only stood there staring at them.
“Uh mom.” Nicolas said awkwardly. “Why don’t you go in and we’ll be there in a few moments.”
She stared at him disapprovingly before looking at Kai with this unreadable look in her eyes and walking away.
“What was that?” Kai asked turning to Nicolas but he only shrugged before grabbing the smaller’s boy’s wrist and pulling him in a hug.
“Happy thanksgiving baby.”
Kai smiled his cheeks flushing as he tightly wrapped his arms around his best friend, “happy thanksgiving Nic.”
They pulled away and Nicolas smiled down at him. “I like your shirt.”
“I like yours even if it looks like every other in your closet.” Kai cheekily replied and Nic chuckled rolling his eyes.
“I smell good food. Let’s go eat.” He said and Kai nodded following to where the family was located.
As they walked in Lee grinned at Kai and winked at him making the small boy scowl at him and turn away.
Nicolas greeted everyone separately before going back to stand next to Kai who was trying to tell Lee to stop being annoying.
“What’s up? Is he annoying you?” Nic asked turning to mock glare at Lee and the older man raised his eyebrows.
“I liked you better when you were small and shy.” He muttered and Kai giggled, “Nic was never shy.”
“Boys come sit down!” Kai’s mom said sternly and they obediently nodded, taking their seats.
After their parents talked a bit, Kai’s mom said that it was time that they were all going to say what they were thankful for.
“I’m thankful for my husband, who’s been there to love and take care of our family for all these years.” His mom started out, turning to look at her husband with a smile and he smiled back.
“I’m also thankful for Arabella for loving my son and I’m thankful for Nicolas for taking care of my baby.” She finished.
“You’re not thankful for your sons?” Lee asked with a pout and she shushed him.
Lee’s dad went next and said something shorter but similar, then Lee went and after Bella and then it was Kai’s turn.
“I’m thankful for my family for always supporting me.” He smiled at his parents and they smiled back. “I’m thankful for Nicolas for being my best friend and protecting me no matter what.”
He turned to Nicolas and smiled widely. Nic smiled back and reached under the table to take Kai’s hand and squeeze it. They stared at each other for a few moments until someone cleared their throat.
They turned and looked at Luciana who looked at them with the same look she had in the doorway and Kai gulped, looking away.
“Is it my turn?” She asked and Kai wanted to say no it was Nicolas but decided not to and let her.
“I’m thankful for you all for inviting me and my son every year and taking care of him when I can’t. I’m also thankful for life for bringing me where I am.” She said.
They waited for her to say that she was thankful for her son like she did every other year but when she didn’t the family looked at each other with confused faces before Kai turned to look at Nicolas who was staring at his mom.
“Nicolas it’s your turn.” She said looking at him sternly and he clenched his jaw turning away from her and looking down at Kai. Kai gave him a comforting smile and squeezed his hand tighter, making Nicolas loose some of his tension.
He faced Kai’s parents and started taking, “I’m thankful for your family for always welcoming me and treating me as yours. You guys have been my second family and I couldn’t thank you enough. I’m thankful for Kai for staying by side when there was no else else and for being my best friend.”
He too did not mention his mother and no one said anything, instead Kai’s mother said, “of course Nicolas, you are always welcome here. You’re like a son to me just like Lee and Kai and I love you just as much.”
Nicolas smiled gratefully and Kai smiled, happy that he didn’t look as…stiff as he did before.
“Yeah Nic you’re like another little brother to me.” Lee added.
“I’m glad.” Luciana said and everyone turned to her. “That my son has somewhere to go and that he has two brothers.”
Kai tried not to scowl at the word and only looked away but Luciana didn’t let him.
“Right Kai? Nicolas is like your brother as well?” She asked staring at him with raised eyebrows and he looked at her with wide eyes.
“I….uh” he trailed off and looked up at Nicolas who was too busy glaring at his mother.
“Enough chatting. Let’s eat.” Kai was so relieved to hear his dad’s gruff voice cut him off and save him from this disaster. There was no way that anyone was going to go against what the burly man wanted. Kai smiled at his dad who shockingly winked back.
There was tense silence on the table as they ate until Arabella broke the silence and started talking about her appointment with her doctor she had concerning the baby and everyone started excitedly asking questions about the soon to be new member of the family.
“Try the pie! I made it.” Kai said cutting a piece for Nicolas and giving it to him with a hopeful glint in his eyes.
Nicolas took a bite and hummed approvingly, licking his lips and turning to Kai. “It’s delicious baby.” He whispered in his ears and Kai fisted his hands as his body tensed at feeling of Nicolas breath hitting his ears.
“T-thanks.” He whispered back.
From the corner of his eyes Kai could see Luciana staring at them unhappily while clenching her fork and Kai felt an uncomfortable feeling in his stomach grow the longer he looked.
