‘No one understands the intensity of the black dog’s company unless they’ve experienced it themselves at some point. I can’t tell anyone that I cried for an hour today because there was a lizard in my house, and I was alone, so I stood there looking in its direction, unable to move because I could neither kill it nor ignore it. The crying wasn’t even because of the creature. It was because suddenly, I felt alone. And the lizard was like a symbol for all the problems I had and had to deal with, with no source of help. I wanted to kill myself at that moment. The reason for my suicide? A lizard in the room’s corner!
Fortunately, it hid so I could pretend it wasn’t there in the first place and moved everything I needed to my bed, hoping it wouldn’t be able to climb up. The art of pretending that I’ve mastered became handy at last. Why pretend, you ask? Because it’s easier to deal with life that way. The irony is, I hate pretenders. Maybe that’s why I Hate Myself?’
Aiden closed the book with the sound of the doorknob.
“Oh Aiden, have you been waiting for long?”
“It’s okay doc, I’ve gotten used to you being late all the time.”
Chad chuckled and fixed his glasses.
“Nice glasses, by the way.” Aiden spread his legs and shrunk deeper in the armchair, getting comfier.
“Thanks, honestly you’re the only one who noticed.”
“Is that so? Well then shows how much sanity I have and it implies I’m okay enough so you can let me go already.” He said in a worn-out voice. He’d been feeling down without knowing the reason all day.
“Nice try, but we don’t want you to feel ‘okay enough’. We want you to feel great. And free of drugs. Speaking of, you’ve been doing very well for the past week.”
“I don’t want Lucas on my ass, so I choose to behave and take what he gives me. The dude can be scary.” Aiden laughed at his own nonsense. It wasn’t because of the poor nurse. He went along with their plan in hopes of being discharged sooner. The sooner the better.
Chad looked at him closely, observing his expression, and hummed. He looked down at his folder and then looked at his watch. “You have visitors today. Go see them and we’ll talk later again.”
Aiden raised an eyebrow. “Honestly Chad! I never get the point of our talks. You never seem to ask any important shit. Just a quick conversation and then you get rid of me as soon as possible.”
“I get all the information I need in that short time tho.”
“Yeah? Well then, what did you find out from this 5-minute session I waited 15 minutes for?” He started playing with the cover of the book in his hands.
The doctor looked at him for a moment, his gaze soft but firm.
“I wanted to know the reason for you being a good boy, unlike your reputation in this folder I’m holding.”
“Good boy? That’s kinky, doc. And did you find out anything?”
Chad laughed. “Of course I did. But let me tell you something. Acting as if you’re doing good won’t result in me discharging you earlier than the due date.” The man started going through the pile of documents on his desk. “That’s all for today. You can go now.”
Aiden blinked a couple of times, kind of shocked, before leaving the office.
Aiden was about to enter his shared room when he heard his roommates talking. He decided to wait for their conversation to end before going inside.
“Please? I don’t wanna see them but I miss Angel so much. Can’t you just bring her up here?” Vincent was begging Kurt at this point.
“I said no, Vin. You should face them sometime. If you miss Angel so much, just go and see her for yourself.”
Vincent pouted and sat on his bed. “I hate you. I’ll just escape from here, pick Angel up from that hell house and run away from all of you.”
Kurt just sighed and didn’t say anything. Aiden waited a couple of minutes to see if they were done before entering the room. As soon as he did, Vincent jumped up and circled his hands around his bicep.
“Aideeeeeeen, will you do me a favor? I’ll do anything if you do this for me. Please please please??”
Aiden looked at Kurt and then at Vincent, knowing what the younger was about to ask him.
“Go on.”
“My family is coming to visit today and they’re bringing my dog with them. Can you bring her up here so I can see her? Please?”
There was so much going on in Vincent’s eyes that made Aiden lose to him. Vincent was a precious human being and in all honesty, Aiden couldn’t imagine what his parents had done for him to not want to see them so badly. But he knew the feeling of wanting to meet a certain someone so achingly that he gave in to Vincent’s request.
“Alright. I’ll ask them, but if they don’t let me, it’s not my fault.” Upon hearing that, Vincent hugged him tightly while saying thank you a hundred times and ran out of the room.
“You shouldn’t have agreed.” Kurt said while fixing his bed.
“Why not?”
“He needs to meet his parents.”
“And why do you think you have the right to decide that for him?”
Kurt just looked at him and didn’t say anything further.
It was 4 o’clock, which meant he had to go down to get Angel up and see who had come to visit. Probably his parents. He put on a mask and a cap and went down. Vincent had shown him a picture of the dog, so it wasn’t hard to find her in the mass of people. He approached the woman who had the puppy in her arms.
“Hello, I’m Vincent’s roommate. He asked me to bring Angel to him. Would you be kind and let me? He really wants to see her.” Aiden asked politely, not wanting to go back up without this fluff ball.
The woman looked uncomfortable and somewhat disappointed, but handed him the puppy, anyway. He smiled again and ran toward their room to give the younger boy the good news.
“Vincent, look! Someone’s come to visit you!”
Vincent was curled up under his blanket on the bed. Upon hearing that, he jumped up and hugged his pet, kissing her nonstop.
“I DIDN’T THINK THEY’D GIVE HER TO YOU. THANK YOU, AIDEN. YOU’RE THE BEST!”
Aiden had grown very fond of the younger boy the past 10 days of being there, so seeing a hyped Vincent was his favorite. It felt so rewarding.
He walked back to the visiting area and looked around for his parents. Only that they were not alone.
“So I guess there’s something going on with the company?” Aiden asked while sitting down in front of the 3 people who had come to visit him.
“Hello to you too, my son! You have gained some color back, so I guess this place’s working.” The old man said.
“I’m still pale as fuck, but the color is because all I can do in the prison you’ve put me in is hang out in the yard.”
“Language, Aiden!” His mother hissed while shifting uncomfortably in her seat, looking at the third company.
Aiden looked at the guy. “Spill Hugo. We don’t have all day. What’s up, my loyal lawyer?”
Hugo seemed to calculate his words before talking. “He wants to buy your shares at the company.”
Aiden lost his composure at the mention of the person. “Is he back to work? Has he fully recovered?”
The elders sighed.
“He is back to work, yes, but his situation’s still the same. You should let go already, Aiden. You’re just torturing yourself this way.”
Aiden looked down at his shaking hands. Those very hands used to feel the soft skin. Used to run through the sometimes-rough hair because of all the bleaching but he never minded. And now… now his hands were empty and if he looked at them long enough the stains from that cursed day would appear all over his palms again.
“Sell it, then. Do as he wishes.” He whispered, suddenly drained of all emotion.
“But, son, it’s your company as well. How many of the major ideas were yours through the years? He can’t just take it away from you like that.” His mother said.
“It’s his company, mom. I just sponsored at the beginning and then shared the ideas that came to my mind. Plus, I’m no longer in the position to object. Do as he wants, Hugo. I don’t even need the money. Just transfer the shares to him.”
His mother grabbed his hands. “Enough of this. Tell me about this place. How are the people in here?”
The contact shocked him. He hadn’t expected to be touched, more so by her. And in his current state, he didn’t want anything near his hands at all. If anyone were to hold him, any part of him, only he was allowed. Aiden didn’t want anyone else.
“I— they are—” He tried to answer, he did, but he couldn’t get enough air in. “I need to go.” He stood up and walked out of the area the fastest he could. He ran and hid in the deepest and darkest corner of the hospital. Crying his eyes out and thinking this was really it. That person he loved so much had really cut all the ties this time in order not to see the singer anymore.
