Offroad POV
Offroad stared at the 2 pink lines hoping to god this was a joke. Maybe if he stared hard enough the second line would disappear. He grabbed the second and third tests from the counter to only be laughed at by the same 2 pink lines that appeared on each test. He threw the tests into the sink, grabbed the box they came in, and scanned it over hoping that maybe he had read the instructions wrong. Maybe 2 pink lines didn’t mean that he was the biggest moron on the planet. ‘Wait approximately 3 minutes. 1 line means negative 2 lines means positive.’ Offroad snorted how the fuck was this positive? He was 19! He knew when he had woken up in the bed alone after that night it was a bad idea.
He had foolishly accepted his friend’s invitation to a friend of a friend’s birthday party. He had just been having a rough few days and needed something, anything to take his mind off the bullshit. ‘Your mind is definitely off it now.’ The man showed up and immediately people surrounded him. Offroad knew that’s what happens when you are rich, popular, talented, an alpha, and the son of one of the largest corporations. People wanted to just stand next to you to be able to say they did. To boast to their friends they somehow knew your entire life in that less than a minute interaction.
Offroad had made the smallest of eye contact with him that night. He hated men like that because they reminded him of his older brother. But as the night progressed Offroad could feel his eyes on him. He felt the jabs from his friends trying to signal him that he was staring but Offroad ignored them. He was there to unwind and relax and that man was not part of that plan. Offroad ignored him all night. But as he was leaving he was pulled into the group that he happened to be standing with as he was saying goodbye to a friend. They had been talking about a finance class, Offroad remembered because it was weird that this was the topic of discussion at a party. An argument had started between him and the man because of a comment he had made about the omega professor. It was some sexist remark that Offroad knew was supposed to be a joke but fuck that.
Offroad closed his eyes remembering it all groaning. Somehow he went from arguing with the drunk idiot to waking up naked, thoroughly fucked, and alone in a hotel room with money on the side table for what Offroad assumed was for a cab home if he had been taking a helicopter. He had been pissed but at himself. He wasn’t that careless; he didn’t sleep with random men. He had washed up, walked to the nearest pharmacy and brought an emergency contraceptive dealing with the judgmental looks from the cashier. He was an omega and while fertility outside of a heat cycle was very low it wasn’t low enough for Offroad to not do anything. It was supposed to work within 24 hours. That’s what the box had said. But here he was 8 weeks later, 5 weeks past what should have been the start of his yearly heat cycle, staring at the 6 laughing pink lines that screamed it didn’t. What was he supposed to do now?
“FUCK!” Offroad screamed, clearing everything off his bathroom counter with the swipe of his hands.
“Offroad!?” Poon, his friend, and roommate, concerned voice came through the bathroom. Offroad grabbed the test from the sink and flung the door open.
“This is your fault!” Offroad screamed pushing the positive pregnancy test into his friend’s hands as he pushed past him to make his way to the kitchen. Poon had been the friend who had invited him out to his friend’s birthday party.
“Oh, fuck,” Poon whispered as he stared almost as hard as Offroad at the test. “What are you going to do?” Poon asked, still staring at the test.
“Obviously I have to tell him,” Offroad sighed, pouring himself a cup of water. “He is as responsible for this as I am.”
“Are you going to keep it?” Poon asked, setting the test down on the table as he took a seat in the chair.
“I don’t know,” Offroad sighed, running his hand through his hair. “I’m 19 and he is what? 21?” Offroad asked, looking for confirmation from Poon who nodded. Poon was the friend who he had been saying goodbye to when he had started arguing with the idiot. Poon and the man weren’t the best of friends but they hung out from time to time.
“His dad is going to be pissed,” Poon mumbled, staring hard once more at the test. Offroad groaned this time. He had spent the past 5 ish years trying to stay away from these types of people, with family money and entitlement that came with their last names only to end up in bed with the biggest one. “He told Daou to clean up his act and not cause any more problems.” Offroad scoffed at the mention of his name. Daou Pittaya. Fucking egotistical asshole was more like it.
“Where is he?” Offroad asked, deciding that it was time to get this over with. He didn’t like waiting around. He was going to get this over with like having a bandaid ripped off on 2 as you count to 3.
“The quad probably,” Poon shrugged. Offroad sat down his cup and grabbed the test from the table.
“Let’s go,” Offroad said to his friend as he walked over to grab his jacket.
“Why do I have to come?” Poon groaned as he also grabbed his jacket. Offroad paused and just stared at him. “Okay, okay, I’m coming, see,” Poon said, making a show of putting on his jacket. Offroad knew what would happen if he tried to approach Daou alone. The amount of omegas who threw themselves down at his feet on a daily basis, if he went alone he would have been brushed out as another groupie. He didn’t have time for that. With Poon not only did he have support, he had backup for when the man ultimately denied ever sleeping with him and that there was no way the baby currently growing in his tummy was his. Offroad paused as he was walking out the door and placed a hand on his stomach. Soon his stomach would swell with a tiny baby. “Offroad?” Poon’s concerned voice was back.
“I’m fine let’s go,” Offroad said, shaking himself from the thoughts that he knew would lead to the attachment of the baby. If Daou decided that he wasn’t ready or didn’t want anything to do with them he really didn’t have much of a choice this time next week there would no longer be a baby in his tummy. He was 19, a sophomore in college, a whole life ahead of him, he couldn’t do this on his own.
He and Poon made their way out of the dorm hall and began walking around the quad. Offroad didn’t bother trying to locate specifically him as once he saw a crowd forming over in the corner of the quad he knew exactly who was in the middle of it. “Over there,” Offroad said, nodding his head in the direction of the crowd at Poon who nodded his head in agreement and turned to make their way over there.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe they are engaged!” A female student giggled to her friend as they walked past them.
“I know I didn’t even know they were dating!” Said her friend. “She is lucky to have locked down an alpha like him.” Those words had Offroad stopping in his tracks.
“Excuse me!” He called out to the girls who paused and slowly turned back to him. “What were you talking about just now?” He asked.
“Oh, Daou and Mang’s engagement.” The girl informed him as Offroads’ stomach dropped to his feet. “It’s been the talk of the school this morning.” The girl said pointing behind Offroad to the crowd that had not partially dispersed enough that Offroad could see that in the middle sitting on a table was the man he was looking for, and wrapped around his arm was Mang Piyatida. Offroad stood there in shock as the girls quickly scurried away. Offroad swallowed the lump that was forming in his throat before marching over and shoving his way through the crowd Poon hot on his heels.
“How long?” Offroad asked as he finally reached the seemingly happy couple.
“I’m sorry, do I know you?” Daou asked, glancing between Offroad and now Poon.
“I wasn’t speaking to you,” Offroad growled through clenched teeth. He focused his attention on Mang. “How long?” He asked again.
“3 months,” she smiled at him, tightening her arms around Daous one. The pit that had formed in Offroads’ stomach had now doubled in size. “Our fathers are friends,” Mang informed him. “Aren’t you going to congratulate me?” She asked, looking him up and down.
“Congratulations,” Offroad said, turning on his heels and marching back the way he came, dragging Poon along with him. He could hear the confused whispers as he pushed through the crowd. ‘What’s with that omega?’ ‘Did he really think he had a chance?’ ‘Omegas, all the same, throwing themselves at alphas,’.
“Offroad!” Poon’s shout had him freezing in his tracks realizing he had almost dragged his friend back to their Dorm entryway. Offroad released him and spun around to face him.
“Promise me right now you will never say a word about this to anyone?” Offroad asked him, pointing a finger in his face.
“Offroad-”
“PROMISE ME!” Offroad now screamed causing Poon to jump. “Promise me, please.” Offroad was now pleading.
“I promise,” Poon agreed. “But what are you going to do?” He asked and Offroad could hear the genuine concern in his voice. Poon wasn’t an alpha or omega, he was a beta. Beta’s naturally were protective of everyone they knew, they were caretakers at their core and Offroad loved that about his friend.
“I will not be my mother,” Offroad said point blank as he turned and entered their dormitory.
Offroad’s mother fell in love with an alpha, who promised her all she wanted to hear. Love, money, gifts, trips, anything he could get into her pants even marriage which was a joke when Offroad thought about it cause his father was already married and with children. He was the affair baby that his mother had kept secret from his father until it was too late to abort the growing baby in her tummy. According to his aunt, when his father found out he tried to find a doctor to perform the procedure but when he couldn’t find one he tried to buy his mother off. Promising that he would be an active father if she just didn’t tell a soul about their affair and who his father was.
Active father my ass. Offroad thought as he flung the door open to his apartment. He was there a good bit when Offroad was a baby but as he got older and like any child wanted to go with their parents his father stopped coming around. It wasn’t until his mother threatened him with legal action that Offroad finally stepped foot in his father’s house at the age of 7, being introduced to his siblings, 2 older 1 younger, and a very pissed-off stepmother. Offroad would say that to her credit finding out your husband had not only an affair but also a secret child for most of your marriage his stepmother handled it rather well. She was graceful and always stepped in when his older siblings started with their bullying but she wasn’t always there to protect him for her children. By the age of 13, Offroad couldn’t stand to be around his father’s family anymore. The names he and his mother were called and the abuse from his older siblings was not worth the 3 minutes a month he saw his father. The only guilt he felt when he never came back was that his little brother did call all the time asking if he was coming over. Diamond was 3 years younger than him and was attached at his hip. As he got older he understood why Offroad didn’t come around. Once he was able to get out of the house on his own he and Offroad grew closer.
He wasn’t going to be his mother. He wasn’t going to use a pregnancy to trap anyone. He would get rid of it himself and no one would be any wiser. He threw himself down on the couch as he pulled out his phone to search nearby clinics. He heard the door that he had left open click shut and a moment later Poon rounded the corner.
“What are you gonna do?” Poon repeated the same question as he did outside.
“What do you think?” Offroad asked, not taking his eyes off his phone. “I’m gonna get rid of it.”
“Aren’t you going to tell him?” Poon asked, sitting down next to him.
“Why should I?”
“I don’t know, if it was me I would want a choice,” Poon said in a quiet tone. Beta men’s likelihood to conceive naturally was very low; they were considered both sub genders meaning they had the ability to impregnate and be impregnated but because of that exact reason, it cut their fertility in half. Most betas who ended up with male alphas or omegas or other male betas as all females were betas, ended up adopting or spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on fertility treatments and surrogacy.
“He will have all the babies he wants in the future with his fiancee,” Offroad could hear his own venom in his words. He had a sudden realization and turned to smack Poon in the shoulder. “How could you let me sleep with an engaged man!”
“Ouch stop!” Poon shouted, grabbing the hand Offroad had been using to smack his shoulder repeatedly. “I didn’t know either! He doesn’t talk about his personal life.”
“Typical alpha,” Offroad said, flinging himself back against the couch once more. “He doesn’t talk about it so he can work his way into people’s pants easier.”
“You know not everyone is like your father,” Poon said, sighing as he stood from the couch. Offroad had known Poon since elementary school. He was the one person he entrusted all his secrets to for the most part. Poon knew his father was some rich business alpha but he didn’t know which rich business alpha. Because maybe if he did know he would have been more shocked to see that it was actually his older sister who was hanging on the arm of the man whose baby was currently growing in his stomach. “Daou is actually a good man,” Poon’s voice faded into the kitchen as Offroad rubbed his tummy.
‘Sorry little one,’ he thought. ‘Good man or not, you don’t deserve the mistreatment you were bound to receive if you were born.’ Offroad picked his phone back up and saw that there was a clinic within walking distance that was still open. He jumped off the couch and headed for the door.
“I’ll be back,” he called to Poon. It was time to rip off the bandaid.
——
“I need some time,” Offroad spoke into his phone to a worried Poon.
“Are you okay? Where are you?” Poon asked, worried for his friend.
“A hotel, it’s done, I just need some time,” Offroad repeated as he sat on the edge of the hotel he had run to from the clinic. He gave Poon a few more reassurances before disconnecting the call. He laid back on the bed rubbing his tummy. He didn’t do it. He couldn’t. He held up the ultrasound the kind nurse had printed for him. They needed to confirm the pregnancy and how far along he was. The young nurse performing the ultrasound forgot to turn the sound off so while Offroad couldn’t see the screen he heard it. The faint heartbeat. The older nurse quickly rushed to them grabbing the wand out of the other nurse’s hand as she apologized over and over. She excused herself from the room a moment later as the other nurse cleaned off the gel on Offroads belly.
“You know I got pregnant at your age,” The nurse told him, wiping the last of the gel off his stomach. “I was scared shitless.” She chuckled.
“I don’t want to be like my mother,” Offroad could feel the lump forming in his throat.
“Then don’t be,” she said, smiling at him. “Just because you walk a similar path as someone doesn’t mean you are destined to be exactly like that person.” She threw the gel-soaked tissues into the trash as she walked back over to the ultrasound machine pressing a few buttons before Offroad heard the machine die down. “If you are so afraid of being like her then use her as an example of what not to do. However you choose to leave here today, you will not be her.” She smiled at him, placing a small soft hand on his shoulder. “The doctor will be in shortly.” She left Offroad alone in the room.
Offroad sat there for what felt like a million years with a billion thoughts running through his head. By the time the doctor had knocked and entered the room Offroad had made up his mind.
“I changed my mind,” he said as soon as the doctor entered the room. The doctor was an older gentleman and he just smiled at him.
“Let me get you some information,” the doctor said as he reached into the cabinet pulling out a few pamphlets and a book, and handing them to Offroad. As he got close enough Offroad to smell it. Alpha. His stomach immediately turned. “That feeling is going to get worse as the pregnancy progresses.” He chuckled. “Read over that information and if you change your mind again you have 4 weeks before the procedure gets a bit more tricky.”
Offroad nodded, thanked him for his time, grabbed his belongings, and proceeded to the checkout counter. As he stood in line he felt something press into his palm. He turned to see the older nurse staring at him.
“My daughter graduates high school in a few months.” She smiled at him and continued on her way. In his hand was a printout of the ultrasound they had performed and he knew he wouldn’t be stepping back into this clinic.
Offroad sighed, closing his eyes. He knew that walking out of that clinic meant his whole life was about to change. He swallowed his pride, picked his phone back up, and called the one person who was able to assist with making that happen.
“Hello,” a deep voice said on the other end of the phone after a few rings.
“I’m pregnant,” Offroad said, sighing. He paused waiting for the lecture.
“Do you know who the father is at least?” His father asked, causing Offroad to roll his eyes.
“Yes,” he hissed. “But it’s a nonissue. He doesn’t want anything to do with me or the baby.”
“Okay, do you need me to send a car to take you to a clinic?” His father asked as Offroad heard him instruct whoever was in his office to leave.
“No, I wanna go back to stay with Mom so I need to transfer schools,” Offroad said. His father was the one currently paying for his tuition and room and board in the city. He threw a fit at his mom about wanting to come here and now less than a year later he was running back.
“You aren’t planning on keeping it are you?” His father asked with what sounded like amusement in his voice.
“Yes, I am. So get me transferred.” Offroad growled.
“I’ll speak with the Dean,” his father sighed.
“Thank you,” Offroad sighed, feeling like a weight was lifted off his shoulders. “Please don’t tell anyone,” Offroad knew his father knew who he meant when he said anyone.
“Are you just going to pop back up with a baby in a year and say surprise?” His father asked.
“No, I’ll make the announcement when the time is right. I just need time.” Time to make up a story. He thought to himself. Offroad said feeling like his time had already run out.
“The father-”
“Is a nonissue!” Offroad shouted.
“How do you expect to support yourself and this baby?” His father asked, hinting that Offroad should at least go after the father for support.
“Well lucky for me, I have a father and mother who are very well off and WILL help considering I never ask for anything.” Offroad knew he should have probably asked nicer considering the situation he was in. He knew his mother would help. She was the kindest person on the planet just made dumb decisions, ‘I guess I get it honestly,‘
“On 2 conditions.” His father said. “1. You keep your grades exactly where they are.” Offroad scoffed he was a straight-A student. “2. I want a name.” Offroad opened his mouth to protest but was quickly cut off by his father. “We both know I do not need you to tell me, I can certainly find out on my own, I will support you 100% through this but I want to hear it from you.” Offroad sighed hard. And to make sure his future and his child were secure he uttered the name he hoped to never have to repeat again.
……..
8 months later
His son’s first cry made the 25 hours of labor he had just endured worth it. Holding his tiny son in his arms seeing the big eyes look up at him made the last almost year worth it all. His son was born coming in at 7 pounds 12 oz healthy as ever. Offroad could see that his son bore a heavy resemblance to his sperm donor but Offroad didn’t care. He loved his son more than anything in the world already. During the days spent in the hospital recovering Offroad was visited by friends and his mother’s family and Diamond had made the trip down with his stepmother after he texted a photo of the baby to his father announcing his son’s birth.
“I can’t believe I’m an uncle!” Diamond exclaimed as he held his son gently rocking him. “What’s his name?”
“Chance Danupol,” Offroad smiled.
“That’s a good name,” his stepmother, Jo, smiled at him rubbing his arm.
“Knock, Knock,” Poon’s voice called from the door. He walked in carrying a bouquet of flowers. He immediately brought them over to Offroad hugging him hello. “Nice to see you but where is my godson!” Poon said as he excitedly rushed over to Diamond’s side.
“His name is Chance Danupol,” Diamond informed him. Offroad was prepared for this moment and as if on cue so was his son who went from silent to war crying. Diamond quickly rushed his son back to him. Offroad kept one eye on his son, as he prepared him a bottle and one on Poon who was still frozen in shock. His stepmother and Diamond said their goodbyes promising to visit again before they left back for the city.
“You said you took care of it,” Poon whispered, coming over to Offroads bedside. “I was expecting to see a premature baby, not a full-grown one!” He hissed. Unfortunately, only his father, mother, and now Poon knew the truth. Everyone else was fed a story of him getting knocked up by a one-night stand 6 months ago and due to complications, he had to deliver early.
“I’m sorry,” Offroad did feel bad for lying to his friend. “I couldn’t do it.”
“Who knows?” Poon asked, taking a peak at the baby who resembled his friend more and more with each passing hour.
“You and my father,” Offroad informed him. “My mother knows almost 100% of everything but she doesn’t know who.”
“So he still doesn’t know?” Poon asked, making a face.
“No he doesn’t, and he never will,” Offroad said, giving Poon a hard glare silently reminding him of his promise. He smiled down at his son, his heart overflowing with joy and love. This was his son no one else’s and it would stay that way no matter what he had to do.
