The week after Christmas had flown by and New Years’ Eve had arrived. The couple would spend their evening with Changbin who had returned back home to his dorm after spending Christmas with his family. Jisung was excited to see his best friend again, his positive mood bouncing off the walls. Minho smiled at his boyfriend cutting up some apples for their afternoon snack. They’d eat at Changbin’s, but both boy’s stomachs had been growling. Minho walked up to Jisung and hugged his waist from behind, snuggling into him.
“I can’t believe the year is already almost over, it’ll be spring before we know it.”
“Yeah, thank god it’s over. This year is going to be my real fresh start. Years later, I want to look back at this time and be able to pinpoint it as the moment my life turned around for the better.”
“Hopefully I’ll be there to reminisce on it with you.”
“What? Of course! Do you really think I’m letting you go? You’re the best medicine ever, I don’t think I can continue to improve without you.” Minho smiled softly and placed a kiss to Jisung’s neck, who immediately felt a shiver go through his body. He’d never get used to it.
“Do you know why you’re my medicine?” Minho hummed, swaying them side to side as he watched Jisung throw the peels away in the trashcan below the sink. “Because medicine helps to improve, but it is only a part of the healing process. You help me, but I don’t want you to be my sole reason to get better. I-If that doesn’t sound too rude.”
“It’s not rude at all. In fact, I’m proud that you acknowledge it. I’m glad that you want to be happy for you and through yourself, and not just because of me… It sounds like it really will be a great year.”Jisung giggled and handed Minho the small bowl with perfectly chopped apple parts. “You’re like my little angel, though. It feels like I’ll always have you watching over me.”
Minho nearly choked on the apple slice he just plopped into his mouth, Jisung raising an eyebrow asking himself why it had made Minho choke so much. “Well, I think if I had been in your shoes, you would’ve been mine in the same way I am yours.” Minho gave another one of his softer smiles, reaching his hand up to cup Jisung’s face. The younger stared back into his eyes as he munched on a slice himself, wondering what he did to deserve the most precious man in the universe.
“I love you, Minho.” He then said, a giggle escaping from his lips as he watched Minho’s cheeks redden.
“I love you too, Sungie.”
After some more cuddling on the couch whilst watching silly youtube videos, it was finally time to head to Changbin’s apartment. Jisung’s excitement started to bounce off the walls, happy he would be able to give his gift to his best friend. A couple seconds after they knocked on the door, it swung open, revealing a handsome looking guy.
“Hi Binnie!” “Hey.”
“Hey guys, long time no see! Come on in.” The two boys rushed inside, feeling the warmth of Changbin’s cozy dormroom hit their faces. It had the same layout as Minho’s, except the fact that Changbin only had 1 couch and no chairs. It was big enough for the three of them, so it didn’t really matter. “I prepared some hot choco as well as cookies and chips. I baked the cookies myself!” Upon hearing that, Jisung’s eyes widened slightly. Changbin wasn’t bad in the kitchen, he just didn’t really use measurements. Last time he made cookies, they were so hard Jisung almost broke his teeth.
“I’m not sure if I’m in the mood for cookies.” He said, not wanting to insult his best friends’ creation. He seemed prouder of it than usual.
“Oh, don’t worry. Felix and I videocalled whilst I made them, I can guarantee they’re better than last time.” A sigh of relief was heard and Minho and Changbin laughed in response. “I didn’t want to say it, but I indeed was scared of your cookies.” Changbin protested a bit after that, the two best friends bickering about past experiences as Minho laughed and commented on some of the crazy accusations. Soon after, the boys popped pizzas into the oven and turned on Changbin’s laptop, which was connected to his tv. All eight boys had agreed they could play some Jackbox and so, they all connected to Discord so they could speak to one another whilst playing.
At one point, it was time for Minho to give a ‘presentation’ on why ‘simping for people is bad for your health’. Seungmin had picked out the slides, which could only result to a big mess. He ended up picking a picture of a pacifier, making Minho quickly say that ‘simping is for babies’. However the next slide was one of a happy couple in a relationship, so then he just looked over at Jisung and smiled.
‘However, if you’re in a relationship, it is your duty to simp for your significant other. Right, Sung?’
Needless to say, a lot of screaming happened and Minho ended up winning the round. Everyone stopped playing around 11 pm, all getting ready to spend the rest of the evening and night with their families. Or in the three boys’ case, with friends. It made Jisung wonder why Changbin had headed home after Christmas instead of spending the new years with his family.
“Binnie, why did you head home after Christmas?” Minho asked, as if he read Jisung’s mind.
“What?! Are you not happy to celebrate this wonderful evening with your best mate? I’m appalled! Shocked! Mortified!”
“No, of course we’re happy!” Jisung quickly defended, faking a glare in Minho’s direction. Changbin’s face fell slightly for a quick moment, before he looked indifferent. “Well, to be fair, I do have a reason. I was planning to tell you after tonight to not ruin the mood, but it doesn’t really matter.”
“Is everything okay?” The two boys said in unison, both worrying about what could’ve happened.
“Yeah, I’m pretty okay over it. My parents decided to get a divorce.” Jisung’s eyes widened. Obviously, he had known Changbin’s parents for as long as he’d known Changbin. The amount of times he stayed over as a kid because his father would be visiting his mother was uncountable. That only increased after she passed away. They were always so kind to Jisung, he never had seen this coming. But times did change and people fall out of love, so he shouldn’t have been as surprised as he was.
“Oh wow, I’m sorry Binnie.”
“It’s okay, I guess. I noticed in the last year or so that something had changed. Thankfully, they still care for each other as good friends, so there never really was any fighting or whatever. They just don’t love each other anymore, so I’d rather they seperate now on good terms, instead of sitting it out and turning to hate one another.”
“That’s true…” The room went silent for a moment, until Changbin slapped his thighs and stood up.
“I’m getting some champagne, it’s already 11:30. Got to get ready to chug that motherfucker at 12!” Jisung laughed whilst Minho attempted to reason with Changbin to not chug the champagne, but the younger was deadset on it. As Changbin sprints to his kitchen, Jisung’s phone starts to ring. The boy picks it up, face falling slightly as he sees it’s his father’s ID. He never knows what to expect when that man is calling, even now that he is getting therapy. With shaking hands, Jisung presses the green button and brings the phone up to his ear.
“Hi, dad?” Minho didn’t realise who the caller was, eyes widening slightly. Even Changbin’s gaze shoots up from the plastic wineglasses he was pouring the champagne into, the entire room filling with an awkward silence.
“H-Hello son! How have you been?”
“It’s been good, actually… So why are you calling?”
“Can’t your old man wish his son a happy new year?” Jisung starts tearing up without even realising. A soft sniffle escapes from his nose, not going unnoticed by everyone. “Jisung? Are you crying? Are you okay, did something happen just now?” Jisung couldn’t help it as crocodile tears made it down his face. His breathing went uneven, but not because he was having a panic attack. Han Jisung was overwhelmed with emotions when hearing his dad speak to him like this.
“N-No,” he managed to croak out as Minho gently rubbed circles on his boyfriend’s back, trying to calm him down a little. “I-It’s just, it’s good to h-hear your voice like this!”
“Like what? I’m just talking, son.” The son in question felt bad, almost not wanting to tell his father the reason as to why he was so emotional.
“Y-You sound so-so sober.” His sobs stopped racking his body as he leaned more into Minho, who instinctively put his arm around Jisung’s shoulder. Changbin also came back with the fake wine glasses in both hands, sitting down next to Jisung on his other side. There was a short moment of silence on the other end of the line, before his father spoke up.”I’m glad to h-hear that. It’s obviously tough, I-I have some bad days where I’m very frustrated and easily angered. But, I’m doing better. It’s going well. I haven’t had a sip since I came here and I’m doing it for you, son.”
“Dad. Please do it for yourself, too. If you do it for someone else, it won’t last. Believe in yourself and do it for you… and for me and mom second. If you do that, I’m certain you can get through this.”
“… Thanks Jisung. I’ll become someone you can be proud of…” it was quiet for another short moment, his dad being the one to break that silence once more. “Are you celebrating with anyone tonight? I hope you’re not lonely.”
“Ah, no! I’m celebrating with Binnie and Minho.”
“Good.. wish them a happy new year from me as well. I should get going, I only had 15 minutes on the line and my supervisor is already starting to give me a small glare.”
“R-Right. Take care dad, Happy New Year.”
“You too Sung, Happy New Year to you too. I love you.”
“Love you too.”
Jisung hung up, his eyes just blankly staring at his homescreen. His two closest friends on either side of him, gave each other a quick look. They weren’t sure if Jisung’s mood was ruined, but neither felt like they should ask him. Just as Changbin was about to ask if Jisung was okay, the youngest’s head shot up. This time there were no crocodile tears, but his eyes were watering slightly.
“Sung, are you o—”
“I’m so fucking happy right now.” Jisung stood up and turned around to face his two friends.
“He sounded sober! I haven’t heard him talk without slurring his words in years! Ohmygod, he even told me he loved me. Oh, he wished you two a happy new year as well, by the way! I’m actually excited to see him when he gets discharged now!”
Watching the boy jump up and down as he said those things, Minho’s eyes twinkled with little stars. He could feel a warmth come from Jisung he had never felt before. It reassured him, that his soulmate was okay. Even if it was for a short while, he could feel Jisung was genuinely happy and excited for his future. When their eyes met, it felt like the fireworks that would be lit in about 7 minutes were already going off. Minho gave him the biggest smile ever and there after Jisung’s focus went to his best friend. “I’m glad we can kick off the new year like this. This surely is a night to remember, isn’t it?” Changbin said, grabbing his champagne and taking a sip.
“It really is, I’m glad I got to spend tonight with you two. You’re my best best best BEST friends in the world!” Jisung said, falling down inbetween the two boys again. “Did I just get friendzoned whilst being in a relationship with you?” Minho said, feigning hurt as he put his hand over his heart.
“No! But I think having your partner as your best friend is a good thing!”
“You do have a thing for best friends, don’t you?” Minho said, earning the loudest cackle from Changbin he’s ever heard. Jisung gasped as he hit Minho on the arm.
“D-Don’t say that! It’s so embarrassing!”
“Still!? It’s been years Sung!” Changbin laughs even more as he wiggles his eyebrows. “You twoooo! Stop itttt or I’m leaving!”
“Well, you’d celebrate New Year’s alone on the street then, 2 minutes till 12.” Minho says, staring at the clock. All three boy’s phone pinged and they checked their notifications. It was Hyunjin wishing everyone a Happy New Year. They all returned the greeting before seeing the year had only 40 seconds left. Changbin stood up and the two followed his lead.
“Lets make a circle.”
“What, like a prayer circle?”
“Sung no, you idiot! Just a circle so we can hug each other in like 30 seconds.” Changbin groaned back, making Minho laugh.
“But what if I wanted to kiss Jisung as the clock struck zero?” The oldest said, making his boyfriend blush.
“Then suck it up, buttercup. You can do that next year. Literally. Like after the hug. Or the next December 31st. You decided to celebrate with me tonight so don’t exclu— OHMYGOD TEN SECONDS, TEN, NINE—” Jisung and Minho just laughed and counted down alongside their friend, ready to give a big hug to one another.
“THREE,
TWO,
ONE,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!”
The boys all squished one another until their muscles ached, finally deciding to let go after a solid 15 seconds. Minho then turned to Jisung, who surprised him by kissing him instantly. Changbin just smiled for a second before he grimaced. He wasn’t one to like PDA, not even when it was his two best friends being cute together. The couple broke apart after only a short moment, Jisung’s face carrying a soft blush. The three boys went to stand on the balcony. From here, they were just able to see the fireworks show that was happening over the Han River.
Speaking of Han, the boy cuddling in Minho’s arms was quietly thinking to himself. About everything that happened in this relatively short time since he met Minho. He was ready to end it all until that boy barged straight into his dull life, without a single warning. He thought about how much light Minho immediately radiated, which scared Jisung away yet it was also what made him want to befriend the older in the end. He thought about his secrets being revealed to someone other than Changbin and how vulnerable he felt. Lastly, he thought about how different he is compared to who he was 4 months ago. It was all because of one boy who decided to make himself welcome in Jisung’s life. If it wasn’t for him, Jisung wouldn’t have been able to grow as a person. He was always stuck in the past, in the negativity. Now, he felt like he could finally start taking some steps forward. Minho gave him the push, Jisung didn’t stumble. He ran.
“A New Year, a new me. Jisung whispered softly, more to himself than anyone else. Minho and Changbin both picked up the words, but decided to not say anything. They just glanced at Jisung with loving eyes, genuine happiness flowing through them knowing that he had finally found himself.
The End
Actually this time
———————————————————————————
Thank you so much to everyone that read this, that had the patience to wait for my uploads and to those who voted or commented on this story. I know I’m not the best writer, but I’m genuinely happy with 90% of this story and especially with the ending.
I know there weren’t many of you reading this, but know that it made me so happy to see at least some people come back to this story and take their time to read what I had created. I’m definitely the happiest with this book in comparison to others I’ve written in the past. I really loved these characters and their relationships.
I’ll make an epilogue, but it won’t be a ‘look into the future to see minsung happily married whilst 3racha has hit it big’-type of thing.
Lastly, I could’ve played with the ‘guardian angel’ thing more, however Minho was revived and sent to earth so wasn’t fully an angel anymore. It wasn’t the most important storyline either, it was about these boys being there for each other yo.
Anyways, I’m going to end my talk here. Thanks again for your support. I will probably write more minsung (or another skz ship) in the future, but for that i want to be at least 70% done before I start posting. Epilogue will come sometime in the foreseeable future, can’t make promises on how fast though. This pandemic has made mental health an even faster struggle bus than before.
Stay Healthy and Safe everyone.
Love,
j-onesunshine
