Baji couldn’t help but think how most of the females he had encountered were ruthless and cold-blooded.

No matter what sacrifices were made for them—Males, even if it cost someone their life, they remained unmoved.

His father’s tragic death had been a result of trusting an old female, and Baji had sworn never to make that mistake again.

It was rare to find someone like his mother or the few females he truly respected—different from the rest.

Unique in their gentleness, in their warmth.

His golden-yellow eyes dimmed slightly as he watched the trio outside gather firewood, the cool wind rustling through the trees.

For three days, he had observed them from a distance, since the moment they had moved into the caves near his vantage point. But, out of all of them, his focus was always on Takemichi.

Takemichi, the petite male who seemed so out of place among them.

Baji found himself studying him more carefully than anyone else, his eyes never straying far from him. He couldn’t understand how someone like Takemichi could exist.

Small, delicate, his pale skin almost glowing in the faint sunlight that filtered through the forest. He moved with a quiet grace, always neat and clean despite the rugged conditions they were in. Takemichi smelled fresh, too, like the soft scent of herbs, something that stood out in a world of sweat and blood.

Yet, for all his apparent weakness, there was a strength in Takemichi that was undeniable.

It wasn’t physical—he wasn’t strong like Mikey or Draken or even him. But it was something deeper. His kindness, his unyielding resolve. Baji had seen males with muscles for days break under pressure, but Takemichi?

He had survived things that should’ve shattered him, but here he was, standing tall, even if he looked fragile on the surface.

Baji felt a pang of something unfamiliar in his chest. It bothered him. At first, he had assumed Takemichi was a female.

Honestly, who could blame him?

Takemichi’s features were soft, his movements more graceful than any man Baji had ever met. He was certain that both Mikey and Draken had thought the same thing when they first encountered him.

Hell, even now, Baji still questioned his own judgment.

Now, as he crouched behind a rock on the edge of the cliff, hidden by the thick underbrush, he watched again. It had become a habit—one he couldn’t shake, even if he tried. From this high vantage point, he could see everything happening in the camp below. The caves where they lived were carved into the rocky mountainside, scattered like little hideaways among the towering trees.

And for the last three days, this had been Baji’s routine.

He spent his time hunting, bringing back enough meat to sustain the group, but his mind was always elsewhere—on Takemichi.

He had been watching him for three days straight, and oddly enough, he never felt tired or bored. The more he observed, the more he became fascinated.

Baji knew that both Mikey and Draken had noticed his behavior by now. They weren’t stupid. They saw the way he lingered, the way his eyes followed Takemichi’s every move. But for some reason, they hadn’t intervened.

Perhaps they trusted him, or maybe they realized he wasn’t doing anything harmful. As long as he wasn’t a threat, they seemed content to leave him alone.

Lang Zhu, on the other hand, hadn’t been so lenient.

On the second day of Baji’s silent watch, Lang Zhu had caught him. He had been on his way to Takemichi’s cave, carrying something wrapped in cloth, when he spotted Baji crouching behind the trees, eyes glued to Takemichi as he worked.

Lang Zhu had marched straight up to him, scolding him in that blunt way of his.

“You look like some kind of predator lurking in the shadows”
Lang Zhu had said, crossing his arms.

“If you have something to say to Takemichi, say it to his face. This lurking around makes you look like you have bad intentions.”

Baji had just grunted in response, shrugging off the comment. He didn’t have any bad intentions… or at least, he didn’t think he did. But what was he supposed to do?

Confront Takemichi?

And say what?

That he was captivated by someone so different from anyone he had ever known?

Lang Zhu had sighed heavily, muttering something under his breath about Baji being a fool for not taking action. But Baji had just watched him leave, knowing deep down that he wasn’t ready for that confrontation.

Not yet.

As Baji continued to hide in his usual spot, he tried to figure out why he was doing this—why he was so drawn to Takemichi. He had never been the type to obsess over anyone, let alone someone as seemingly fragile as Takemichi. But this was different.

There was something about him that made it impossible for Baji to look away.

Maybe, deep down, Baji already knew the answer to his own question. But he wasn’t ready to face it. Not yet.

His thoughts wandered back to their first meeting. The day they had argued at Lang Zhu’s house. The memory felt distant, but it still lingered in his mind, nagging at him. After their argument, Baji had left a small offering of red berries outside Takemichi’s cave as an unspoken apology. He hadn’t stayed to see if Takemichi accepted it. He didn’t need to. For now, watching from afar was enough.

But for how long?

.â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â—

That’s day, when Keisuke was kicked out of Lang zhu’s cave.

After what felt like hours of searching, Lang Zhu finally found Keisuke sitting alone on a large rock that overlooked the sprawling valley. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows over the land.

Keisuke sat at the very edge of the rock, one leg bent at the knee, his posture rigid. The light of the fading sun bathed his sharp features in a warm glow, but even this softness couldn’t fully dull the intensity of his expression.

His skin, though not as pale or white as Takemichi’s, seemed to catch the golden light in a way that made him appear almost otherworldly. His long, black hair, usually tied back, was loose and swayed gently in the evening breeze, adding a rare gentleness to his otherwise harsh appearance.

Lang Zhu, despite his advanced age—his hair and beard now fully white—moved with the grace and agility of someone far younger.

In one swift motion, he leapt onto the rock, landing beside Baji. Without hesitation, he raised his hand and gave Baji a sharp knock on the forehead.

“Tsk, tsk. You rebellious little brat”
Lang Zhu scolded, though there was a hint of amusement in his voice.

“You had the nerve to strike a little male like Takemichi? Fragile, gentle, and so… delicate. What’s gotten into you?”

Baji didn’t react at first.

He remained silent, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon. Finally, he turned his head slightly to glance at the old witch doctor, his expression unreadable.

“It doesn’t matter what they look like. Male or female, if someone does wrong, they deserve to be punished. And I’ll be the one to do it.”

Lang Zhu sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.

“But Takemichi didn’t do anything wrong, Keisuke. You misunderstood the whole situation.”

Baji’s brow furrowed, and he pressed his lips into a thin line.

“I know”
He muttered, his voice low and filled with frustration.

“I didn’t give him a chance to explain. I… jumped to conclusions.”

“Then what’s stopping you from apologizing? Go to him, explain yourself, and make things right. It’s simple.”
Lang Zhu chuckled softly.

Baji’s eyes darted away, his jaw clenching.

“I—I’m not sure he wants to see me… after everything.”

“You like him, don’t you?”
Lang Zhu raised an eyebrow, looking at Baji with a knowing smile.

“W-what are you talking about, old man? He’s a male! How could I—?!”
Baji’s eyes widened, and a slight flush crept up his neck.

Baji’s voice faltered, his mind racing. In their world, while relationships between males were uncommon, they weren’t unheard of.

He had seen such pairings before and held no prejudice against them. He respected the courage it took for those couples to live freely despite societal expectations.

Yet, as the leader of his tribe, Baji was expected to produce an heir, a cub to carry on his legacy.

Most of the tribe assumed that, despite his dislike for most females, he would eventually find a mate. Yet here he was, Lang Zhu suggesting that he had feelings for Takemichi—a male.

“If you hate him so much, why did you leave a gift of red berries for him at his cave?”
Lang Zhu smiled knowingly and continued.

Baji stiffened at the mention of the berries. He had hoped no one would notice.

“What… berries?”
He stammered, his voice unconvincing.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, come now, Keisuke. Don’t play dumb. Your scent was all over those berries. You’re not fooling anyone.”
Lang Zhu chuckled again, this time more deeply.

“I… I picked those berries for you. Not for him.”
Baji’s face flushed deeper, and he looked away, clearly uncomfortable.

With a knowing grin, Lang Zhu reached into his animal hide and pulled out the very same skin bag of red berries that Baji had left for Takemichi.

Baji’s eyes widened in disbelief.

“Draken gave them to me”
Lang Zhu explained, his tone light but pointed.

“He said Takemichi wasn’t in the mood for red berries today.”

Hearing this made Baji’s heart sink. He clenched his fists, the disappointment gnawing at him.

“I… really did pick them for him”
He admitted quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Lang Zhu gave a small nod, acknowledging the truth.

“I know you did”
He said gently.

“You know that red berries grow in thorn bushes? Those thorns are poisonous. One little prick, and you’ll be itching for days. Most animals don’t go near them, and neither do most people.”

Baji remained silent, staring down at his hand. The back of it was swollen and red from where the thorns had scratched him.

The itch was unbearable, but he hadn’t said anything about it. His black hair fell over his eyes, hiding the shame and frustration he felt. Takemichi hadn’t accepted his apology.

The one small gesture he’d made had been rejected, and it stung far more than the thorns.

Lang Zhu sighed, watching the younger man with a mix of sympathy and exasperation.

“Here”
He said, pulling a small bundle of leaves from his pouch.

“Chew these and rub them on the wound. It’ll ease the itching.”

Baji took the leaves without a word, crushing them in his hands before applying them to his skin.

Lang Zhu watched him carefully, his mind already working on a plan.

“You know”
He began thoughtfully.

“Winter is coming early this year. The cold will arrive in less than two months, and it’ll be brutal.”

Baji glanced at the old man, his expression questioning.

“Takemichi will need to stay here, with the tribe. It’s too dangerous for him to leave on his own before the snows come.”
Lang Zhu continued.

“What are you saying?”
Baji frowned, unsure of where the conversation was going.

“I’m saying that if you want to make things right with the little male, you’ll have your chance. He’ll be with us for the entire winter. And who knows? You might just find a way to make amends.”
Lang Zhu smiled faintly.

Baji said nothing, but deep down, the idea of Takemichi staying with the tribe for the winter stirred something inside him.

Perhaps, just perhaps, he’d have the time to figure out exactly what those feelings meant. And more importantly, how to act on them before it was too late.

Lang Zhu, satisfied with his subtle intervention, stood up and stretched, casting one last look at the setting sun before making his way back down the rock.

As the evening light faded, Baji remained, lost in thought. He wasn’t sure what the winter would bring, but for the first time in a long while, he found himself looking forward to it.

And that’s what brought him where he was in the present

.â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â—

One more week passed, and Takemichi had made considerable progress. After gathering a substantial amount of wood, he began crafting some essential furniture for the cave. However, with no nails at his disposal, he resorted to using a naturally sticky gum to fasten the wooden boards together.

The adhesive wasn’t the best, but it was his only option.

For two long days, he tirelessly worked on building cabinets, chairs, and tables.

The gum ran out just as he was planning to make a wooden bed, leaving him no choice but to ask Draken and Mikey for help. The duo quickly came to his aid: Draken, always resourceful, built a sturdy bed using stone slabs, layering it with animal hides to make it comfortable.

He even crafted two pillows from the same hides, stitching them carefully with needle and thread.

Meanwhile, Mikey, inspired by Draken’s efforts, decided to pick wildflowers from the nearby fields. Upon learning that Draken had given Takemichi flowers before, Mikey didn’t want to be outdone. He presented the flowers to Takemichi with a faint blush on his face, and Takemichi, touched by the gesture, placed them in a makeshift vase carved from wood and set it on the newly-made table.

Finally, their cave began to resemble a home, warm and cozy.

The atmosphere felt complete, and the three of them were more than content with their work. Draken and Mikey, in particular, were feeling ecstatic—being able to rest with Takemichi in the same space made them happier than they’d ever admit.

They were lost in their thoughts, imagining quiet moments spent together with Takemichi. But then…

The peace shattered.

Two unexpected visitors intruded upon their sanctuary. One of them, a familiar nuisance, clung to Takemichi like a leech. The other, as always, seemed to find pleasure in bickering with him.

“Dammit!”
Mikey cursed internally, his patience wearing thin.

He had enough.

Without a second thought, Mikey strode forward and grabbed Takemichi, pulling him into his arms. He held Takemichi possessively, glaring daggers at the two intruders who dared to invade their space.

The two men, not backing down, glared right back at Mikey with equal intensity.

A tense silence filled the cave. Takemichi, oblivious to the growing tension, blinked in confusion.

“U-um, guys? Is something wrong? Why is everyone so quiet?”
He asked, feeling the uncomfortable atmosphere pressing in on him.

His question brought everyone back to reality.

A tall male with pale blonde hair, striking green eyes, and a noticeable scar running down from his forehead to his right eye walked forward. He smiled gently at Takemichi.

“No, there’s nothing wrong, Michi”
Inupi—Seishu, the newcomer, replied smoothly.

Mikey tensed up, taking a step back as Seishu approached. With Takemichi still in his arms, Mikey shot a warning glare.

“O-oi, back off, Seishu!”
Mikey growled, his tone filled with possessiveness.

Seishu ignored him completely, stepping even closer until he stood right beside Takemichi.

Draken, observing the tension rising, finally intervened with a tired sigh.

“Mikey, let go of Takemitchy and put him down”
He ordered.

Mikey opened his mouth to argue, but seeing Takemichi agree with Draken, he reluctantly obeyed and set Takemichi on his feet. The moment he did, Seishu wasted no time.

He immediately clung to Takemichi’s left arm, smiling victoriously.

This made both Mikey and Baji froze at the sight, their eyes wide with disbelief.

“H-hey!”
Mikey nearly shouted, anger bubbling up inside him.

Not one to be outdone, Mikey swiftly grabbed Takemichi’s right hand, mirroring Seishu’s move.

Now, Takemichi found himself sandwiched between the two, his arms trapped as both of them held onto him possessively.

Baji, standing on the sidelines, seethed with jealousy. His instincts urged him to do the same, but there was no space left to join in. Plus, his pride would never approve of such open displays. He could only stand and glare, his eyes dark with frustration.

Draken, now utterly done with the chaos, decided to tune out the drama altogether. He loved Takemichi too, but he wasn’t about to get involved in this childish competition.

Not now, at least.

He figured there would be plenty of opportunities later. Besides, someone needed to fix the giant hole Baji had made earlier when he barged into their cave.

“This is the second time he’s done this”
Draken muttered to himself as he inspected the damage.

With a deep sigh, he grabbed his tools, resigned to the task at hand while the others continued their silent war for Takemichi’s attention.

It all started two days ago when Seishu accidentally created a large hole in their cave, connecting it to another. Draken had initially let it slide, figuring it wasn’t a big deal—plus, Takemichi didn’t seem to mind.

.â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â—

During the following days, Seishu began accompanying Takemichi everywhere.

They became closer, and Takemichi learned more about him. Despite Seishu’s clingy nature, much like Mikey’s, Takemichi didn’t mind.

There was something about Seishu that made him feel safe and comfortable, so much so that Takemichi began to open up and accept him—as a friend (?).

Takemichi even found himself thinking that if Seishu liked him, he wouldn’t be able to refuse. (Oh, nevermind)

He had only known Seishu for a short time, just like Mikey and Draken, yet Seishu had already managed to capture his heart!

Who could resist that puppy-like hunk?

No one, that’s who!

So don’t blame Takemichi!

And then there was Baji.

Draken had noticed something odd between Takemichi and Baji, and he wasn’t the only one. Mikey had picked up on it too.

They both knew that Baji had been secretly watching Takemichi for a whole week!

At first, they didn’t think much of it—after all, Baji wouldn’t harm Takemichi. Sure, he almost did once, but there were reasons for that. They had known Baji for a long time, growing up together, so they trusted him not to confront Takemichi.

But they were wrong.

On the third day of Baji’s quiet stalking, things changed.

The day after, Baji approached Takemichi with an armful of different fruits.

Takemichi had initially refused, but upon realizing that those fruits were rare, and that his system had assigned him a task involving fruits, he couldn’t say no. After all, Baji had gone through all that effort to find them just for him.

After that day, Baji’s image slowly changed in Takemichi’s mind. Their bickering continued, but it became more like a quirky friendship—though a friendship marked by constant teasing and arguments.

And then there was the matter of the cave.

After Seishu had made his accidental hole, which turned into an extra entrance to Takemichi’s cave, Baji followed suit the very next morning—also accidentally.

From that point on, their three caves became connected into one big space.

At first, Takemichi had been against it.

But how could he say no to his new friends?

Yes, he had to admit—they were friends. Really.

The orc caves were simple, without doors. Some of the more particular orcs would hang animal skins at the entrance to block the view.

Now, there were multiple animal skins hanging inside the combined cave shared by Takemichi, Draken, Mikey, Seishu, and Baji.

.â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â— . â—  . â—  . â—  . â—

Draken sighed and shook his head, getting back to his work while Takemichi managed to slip free from Mikey, Seishu, and Baji’s grasp.

The three of them were caught up in some kind of competition that Takemichi couldn’t quite understand. After a few minutes of trying to make sense of it, he gave up and walked back to his room.

Just as he was about to relax, a system prompt echoed in his mind.

“Congratulations to the host for completing one of the series of tasks! The task rewards are now being distributed. Please remember to check them.”

A set of spatulas appeared out of thin air in front of Takemichi, and he couldn’t help but grin. With a spatula, he could finally cook!

What a fantastic reward!

Takemichi happily held the spatula in his hand and rushed back to the group, brimming with excitement.

“We can have fried food tonight!”
He exclaimed energetically.

The four Beastmen had never seen an iron pot before. Baji, full of curiosity, stepped closer to Takemichi and knocked on the pot, a crisp sound ringing out.

“What the—Takemitchy, what material is this made of?”
He asked in surprise.

For a moment, Takemichi was surprised to hear Baji call him by that nickname instead of his usual one. But considering that both Mikey and Draken used it—and Baji has been using that since they got to know each other, he quickly got used to it.

“Hehe, it’s made of iron!”
Takemichi replied with a bright smile, beaming like the sun.

The light in his eyes was so dazzling that the others had to look away, blushing furiously. After a brief pause, they finally looked back at him, listening attentively as Takemichi gave them a simple introduction to iron and its uses.

They all took his words seriously, secretly memorizing the information in case they ever came across iron ore in the future and needed to recognize it.

Beyond that, they simply loved listening to his voice—calm and pleasant, making everything he said sound soothing and drawing them in for more.

After Takemichi’s brief lesson, they built a simple stove using stones. With no proper seasoning available, Takemichi couldn’t fry food just yet, so he settled for cooking a hearty pot of meat soup instead.

The rich aroma of the meat filled the cave, making everyone’s mouths water. Takemichi carefully ladled the soup into wooden bowls, serving Mikey first, followed by Draken, Baji, and Seishu. He saved his own portion for last.

They all smiled at Takemichi, though no one said a word. After setting his own bowl down on the table, Takemichi grinned and announced excitedly,

“Come on, let’s eat!”

They all took their first sip, and immediately, their eyes widened in shock.

“This is amazing!”
They exclaimed in unison, each of them exchanging surprised glances before bursting into laughter.

Takemichi watched them fondly, his heart warmed by the sight.

He felt a sense of home that he hadn’t known since his parents passed away when he was young. Happiness swelled in his chest, and he had to focus on his food to keep from tearing up.

Seishu, sitting nearby, couldn’t stop gazing at Takemichi’s radiant smile. His own face softened into a gentle smile, one that was so kind and full of affection it was almost intoxicating.

Takemichi noticed Seishu staring and looked over, only to be taken aback by the sight.

Seishu’s expression was so warm and gentle that it caught Takemichi off guard, making him blush even more. Without thinking, Takemichi shyly murmured,

“Inu-kun, please stop staring at me like that or else I’m going to…”
He trailed off, his voice barely above a whisper, but even so, the others heard it loud and clear.

Their sharp senses picked up every word, and all eyes turned to the two of them.

“But you’re beautiful, so why not?”
Seishu, not one to mince words, simply replied

His response was honest, not meant to flirt, but the truth, plain and simple. Takemichi’s face flushed a deep red, and though the others mentally agreed, they frowned, jealousy simmering beneath the surface.

Before anyone could act on it, Takemichi stammered out.

“Thank you. You’re beautiful too, Inu-kun. Very beautiful.”

Seishu smiled warmly at the compliment, stood up, and walked over to Takemichi. Without warning, he leaned down and gently kissed the corner of Takemichi’s mouth.

“As long as you like it”
Seishu whispered in a deep, husky voice that sent a shiver down Takemichi’s spine, his ears turning a bright shade of red.

Takemichi’s face turned as red as a tomato. Flustered, he buried his head in his soup, trying desperately to calm his racing heart.

Meanwhile, Mikey, filled with jealousy, leapt at Seishu, ready to pummel him, with Baji hot on his heels.

Draken, seated nearby, merely smirked coldly as he watched the chaos unfold, amused by the situation but not planning to intervene—yet.
