Axel’s POV
Second period went by pretty fast, and soon the lunch bell rang. I started paying attention in class again, and I realized how far behind I was. I’m grateful that Mr.Falcon asked Jayden to tutor me. If not, it’d take a while before I could get my grades back to where they were.
Maybe I’ll even join the school basketball team when my grades are good again. No, no. You can’t.
I shake my head, and pack up my things. I leave the classroom, and see a familiar figure standing outside the door. I smile.
Jayden Williams. I’ve now acknowledged the fact that even though I’ve only known him for a few day, he makes me smile just from seeing him. I don’t know why, but I think it’s because of how much attention he’s given me these two days. I’ve been craving attention after… yeah. Jack and his family has given me tons of love, but the attention Jayden gives me feels different. I don’t know how to explain it.
“Hey” I say with a smile, in which he returns.
“Hey, want to have lunch with me?” he asks, and I frown a bit. I’m not particularly fond of his group. They haven’t bullied or harassed me, if that’s what you’re thinking. They’re just really loud and seemingly obnoxious.
“With your group?” I ask, hoping he says no.
He shrugs, “We can eat with my group, your group, or by ourselves, your choice. I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t want to sit with my group, they’re pretty loud and obnoxious”
I chuckle, “That’s not a nice thing to say about your friends, but I can’t disagree”
He smiles, “You’ve been more of a friend to me these two days than they’ve been these four years”
“Well, you can join my group for lunch anytime you want. I’ll introduce you to them, let’s go” I say and we turn and walk to the cafeteria. Just as we’re about to open the doors to the cafeteria, we hear someone calling our names.
“Yo Axel, Jayden!” we turn around and see Franco and Tyler -I finally learned their names- walking towards us, waving. We wave back and walk to meet them halfway.
“You guys seem way cooler than the douches we’ve been hanging out with these past years, so could we eat with you guys?” Tyler asks, and Jayden looks to me.
I smile, “Yeah sure, we were just gonna eat with my group. I was gonna introduce Jayden to them, so I’ll introduce you guys as well. Don’t worry, they’re cool” Tyler and Franco are actually pretty cool people from what I’ve seen, and I wouldn’t mind hanging out with them more.
We open the doors to the cafeteria, and I look around for my friends.
“OH YOO HOO. AXEL HONEY, OVER HERE” I hear Jack call, and laugh. This must be his payback for yesterday, when I called him my boyfriend in front of his mom.
I walk over and he freezes when he sees I’m with company. “Baby, are you cheating on me? How dare you! After all we’ve been through! And with three guys at that, you’re so vulgar” Jack says with feign hurt.
I laugh and punch him in the shoulder, “Okay, I get it. I won’t call you my boyfriend in front of your mom again, just shut up. People are looking at us weirdly”
He smirks, “Babe, are you embarrassed of me? I’m just trying to show you how much I love you to the whole school!”
I hear people from other tables snicker. “They’re at it again” I hear someone say.
I roll my eyes, “Seriously Jack, stop. We have guests. Yo Pete” I say, and Jack and Pete turn their attention to the three guys behind me.
“This is Tyler, Franco and Jayden” I say, and I turn to look at Jayden who has a scowl on his face and was glaring at Jack. Did Jack do something to him that I don’t know about?
I turn to look at Jack but he just smiled and introduced himself to all of them. Jack was a horrible actor and liar, so I know that nothing happened between them. Then why was Jayden glaring at Jack?
“U-Um, oh would you look at the time. Class is starting soon, I better head over early to reserve a good seat. Um, later!” I hear Pete say as he scrambles to pack up his things and pick up his tray. He basically sprints out of the cafeteria. But it’s only 11:35…
I hear Franco chuckle behind me, and I turn to see a smirk on his face, as he looks in the direction Pete went.
“Hey, I need to go to the bathroom. Bye” Franco says as we walks out of the cafeteria. Weird.
I exchange confused glances with Jack and we decide to just talk to him later. We sit down, me beside Jack, Jayden beside me and Tyler on my other side.
Tyler and Jack make small talk as I take out my lunch and start to eat. I look up and see that Jayden still has a frown on his face. It doesn’t suit him.
“Hey, Jayden” I say and he looks at me.
I smile, in which he returns with a half smile. My smile drops slightly, “Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
He shrugs, “Nah, it’s nothing. Just not feeling too well”
I frown a little, “Want to go get some fresh air?”
He nods, so I let Jack know that we’ll be back, as we get up. I feel bad for leaving Tyler since I invited him, but he and Jack seem to have hit it off, so my guilt disappeared.
Jayden leaves the cafeteria, and I follow suit. We walk through the halls in silence, before we exit the school. There was a slight breeze, and I cursed at myself for not bringing a jacket. Even if it was only a bit of wind, I feel like I’m in Alaska with nothing but boxers on. Yeah, I’m exaggerating. But in short, I’m really sensitive to the cold.
Jayden seems to have noticed me shivering, because he took off the sweater he was wearing and placed it over my shoulders. I look up at him and he gives me a smile, not the half smile he was giving me earlier, but the usual smile.
“Thanks Jay” I say, and he seems to blush a little at the nickname.
“No problem Axe” I grin at him using a nickname for me. It feels like we’re becoming closer friends.
“So, you want to tell me what’s up?” I ask and I see him frown a little.
He looks at me with a weak smile, “Nah, don’t want to talk about it. I’m okay now”
“Okay, just know that I’m here to listen if you ever want to talk” I say, and he smirks.
“Aww, you care about me” he says, and I nod.
“Of course I do, we may only have known each other for a few days, but I think of you as one of my close friends” I say, and I see him frown. I thought what I said would cheer him up.
“Friend huh? Well I guess I’ll have to work my way up” he says, and his frown is replaced with a smirk. His eyes have a determined glint to them, which leaves me confused.
“Oh by the way, just meet me at my car after school” he says as the warning bell rings. I nod, and we turn to leave when I felt something press on to my cheek. A kiss?
I turn and see a smirk on Jay’s face as he walks away. I stood there, stunned.
Jayden Williams, the straight school quarterback, just gave me a kiss on the cheek.
