Axel’s POV

I wake up and see that I’m sleeping in Jay’s bed, with his arm wrapped around my waist and my face in his chest. I guess Jay carried me to bed last night after I fell asleep on his beanbag. I slowly take his arm off my waist and grab my phone to check the time, 6:00.

I get up, and see that I’m in pyjamas. I guess Jay helped me change as well. I go and take a shower in the bathroom in my room, and change into my outfit for the day. I just wear a pair of blue skinny jeans and a hoodie that I stole from Jay. It’s big on me, but it smells like him so I like it. Geez, I’ve become so attached.

I head downstairs and start to make the batter for my pancakes. When I finish the batter, I take out a pan and put some oil on it before putting the batter on the pan. I flip the pancakes and take out 5 plates, placing 2 pancakes on each plate before taking the plates out and setting them on the table.

I hear someone coming down the stairs and see May, looking shocked when her eyes land on me.

“What- did you make breakfast? I’m going to need a word with the maids” she says, shaking her head disappointingly.

I shake my head, “No, no! It’s not their fault, Jay wanted to have my pancakes, so he told the maids not to cook this morning” I say as I see Jay coming into the dining room.

He smiles as he sees the pancakes and walks over to me, hugging me and kissing my cheek.

“Good morning, princess” he says and I giggle.

“Morning” I say and smile at him.

“Mom, you need to try his pancakes. They’re out of this world” he says and I laugh.

“I need to get the toppings and orange juice” I say and go back into the kitchen.

I come back out with 5 glasses of orange juice, whip cream and syrup on a tray and see Jason and Dan seated at the table.

I put the tray down and take everything off of it before putting it away in the kitchen. I come back out and sit down beside Jay, noticing everyone was looking at me with wide eyes.

“What- how did you make these? The maids never made pancakes this good before” Jason says and I see Dan and May nod.

“Um, well I use my own batter recipe” I say and their eyes grow wider, if possible.

May gives me a fond smile, “You’re just a bundle of never ending surprises, now aren’t you?” she says and I laugh.

“I’m sure the surprises are over”

“Damn Jay, find me someone like this. Smart, can cook, attractive, and an amazing person” I hear Jason say and I blush.

“Sorry dude, I’m sure Axe’s the only one in this world like that” Jay says and I slap his shoulder. We eat and they compliment me on the food continuously during the whole meal.

“That was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. No offence honey” I hear Dan say while looking at May, and everyone else nods in agreement.

“None taken” she says with a smile on her face as she rubs her full belly.

“You need to make breakfast more often” Jay says and I laugh, nodding.

I grab my bag from my room and head downstairs, seeing Jay waiting for me at the door. I quickly put on my shoes, and say goodbye to Dan and May.

We get to school and head to the locker room. We started football in gym class and Jay is eager to show off more of his skills. He gets extra serious every time he’s on the field, even if it’s just a scrimmage with people who are just beginners at football. He doesn’t hesitate to help others, and gives tips on what they can do to improve. Everyone listens to him since he’s the school quarterback, and they improve at an alarming rate. I could tell football is something he’s genuinely passionate about, and seeing him on the field playing with a smile on his face puts a smile on mine.

The rest of the day goes by quickly, and soon it’s my first basketball practice.

“You sure you’re going to be okay?”

“For the gazillionth time, yes. You don’t have to worry, they won’t do anything to me”

Jay frowns, “Don’t leave the gym until I come and get you, okay? Don’t even go into the locker room”

I laugh, “Quit being so paranoid. I’m happy that you’re worried about me, but they can’t do anything while Coach is there”

“That’s why I’m telling you not to go into the locker room after practice. Who knows what they’ll do to you in there after you destroy them in practice. Please, promise me you’ll wait for me before you go in?” Jay looks at me with a pout.

I sigh, how can I say no to that face? “Fine, I’ll wait for you”

Jay smiles, “Good, I’ll see you after practice then. I love you” He kisses me once before turning to go to football practice.

I go into the gym and see everyone sitting on benches or leaning on walls, talking to one another. I go over to Coach, and he smiles when he sees me.

“Axel! I’m glad you’re able to join us” he says and I smile at him.

He turns to the rest of the team, “Listen up boys! Axel here will be joining our team as of today, and he will be starting at our upcoming game”

All of the boys look upset, but only one of them speak up. “Coach, how could you let a scrawny, puny guy join our team in the middle of the year, and then allow him to start in the upcoming game? The game is important, we can’t afford to lose this game or else we’re going to be done for the rest of the season! The starting line we’ve always had consists of our best players, and I doubt this kid has the abilities to beat Patrick” he points his head to a shy looking kid sitting on the bench.

“Patrick ain’t a bad player Tom, he just doesn’t have the height or the body build” Coach says, trying to defend the poor boy.

Another boy scoffs, “Like this kid is any better. Hell, Patrick’s taller than the kid!”

I turn to look at the guy, “How about playing a game with me then? First to score 3 nets wins, and then you’ll see what this kid can do”

He raises an eyebrow at me and smirks, “Sure, I’ll take you on. I’ll teach you to watch that cocky attitude of yours”

We walk on to the court and get ready to do a jump ball. It’s a half court, so this should be easy for me.

“Go easy on him!” I hear coach yell. As I’m about to respond, the guy beats me to it.

“No promises” I roll my eyes and hear Coach mutter something incoherent, but I ignore it as the whistle is blown and the ball is tossed.

I don’t even try to get the ball, as the guy catches it and immediately tries to dribble past me to get to the net. I stop him, and steal the ball from him with ease and run to the net. I stop at the three-point line and shoot, the ball goes in with a swish. I look back and see all the guys, stunned, and I smirk.

My opponent seems to recover first, “You got lucky”

I chuckle, “Whatever floats your boat”

We decided that the one who didn’t get the point gets the ball, so I pass the ball to him and he immediately goes running for the net. I quickly catch up to him and swiftly steal it from him again. I turn around, and shoot. The ball goes in once again with a swish.

I look around to see more stunned faces, the funniest coming from my opponent.

I smirk, “Is it luck that I got my shot in from here?” I say, pointing at my spot on the line in the middle of the court.

I see Coach giving me a proud look from the corner of my eye, as I turn to retrieve the ball. I pass it to him and he goes taking off for my net once again. He seems to have gotten smarter, as he dribbles with his right hand and goes closer to the line, so that if I try to steal it from him, there’s a huge chance the ball will go out. So, I run beside him and guard him, making sure he can’t shoot since he ran all the way to the back of the court and has no where to run anymore. He smirks, and shoots. He misses, and I go to get the rebound. I dribble up to the three-point line of the opponent’s net but he blocks me. I’m not going to lie, he’s pretty good at defence. Though, I’m at a disadvantage thanks to my body size.

He smirks, “Can’t shoot can you? You surprised me with that shot from the mid-court line, but you’re too far from the net now, so what are you going to do, kid?”

The gym erupts in laughter, and I hear a guy on the sidelines yell, “That’ll teach you to never mess with us, midget!”

I laugh, “Who said that my range only goes up to the mid-court line?”

He looks confused, and I pull a feint by stepping to the right. He falls for it, and I jump as high as I can before I shoot. The ball goes in with another swish and the gym goes silent.

I smirk, “I can shoot from anywhere on this court. Nice try though, dude” I pat him on the shoulder as I go get my water bottle from the bench. But before I get to the bench, I’m stopped by the guy from earlier, Tom.

“Play against me. The guy you played against earlier isn’t the best guy from the starting lineup, I am, and I’m also the captain. If you beat me, I’ll hand over the captain position to you, and no one will complain about you joining the team anymore. Deal?” he says and sticks out his hand.

I smile, “Deal” I say, shaking his hand.

I won the game easily, 3-0 again, though I missed a shot this time. He was a little more difficult to play against compared to the first guy, but he wasn’t really a challenge. I got to practice my shooting though, so that’s a plus.

“Your skills are still as amazing as they were a year ago, huh?” Coach says, and I shrug.

“I’m still a little rusty though. My shots aren’t as accurate as they used to be, I missed a shot. I haven’t missed a shot since I became a starter on the Blue Koyas” I say, and everyone looks at me, wide eyes and mouths ajar.

“You were part of the Blue Koyas?!” they all yell simultaneously, and honestly, it would’ve been impressive if I didn’t hear ringing afterwards.

Coach looks at them smugly, “He’s actually the number 8 who disappeared”

“What?!” they yell again and I wince. I’m going to need hearing aids after this. Time to go to the doctor’s.

“No wonder Coach immediately put you on the starting lineup when you joined. Coach has a rule where a player isn’t allowed to be a starter until they’ve been on the team for at least 6 months” Tom says.

“They’re normally gone after 3, that’s why. Only the decent players stay” Coach says, and they all nod in agreement.

“So I guess you’re the new captain huh? Not that that’s a bad thing. Number 8 and the ex-captain of the Blue Koyas leading us, we have an assured victory!” a guy from the team says excitedly.

“Don’t just rely on Axel here though, we have to put work in too” Tom says, and they all nod.

“Um, one thing” they all look at me, “What are your names?” I say sheepishly and they all laugh.

They introduce themselves as William, Gregory, Vincent, Kyle, Harry, Nathan, Tom, Yohan -the guy I played first- and Patrick.

We practiced a few more drills before Coach announced the end of practice. I sigh, and sit down on the bench, waiting for Jay.

The guys all say bye to me, and I wave, giving them a lazy smile.

“So, what’d you think?” Coach asks and I shrug.

“The team’s defence is good, just need to work on shooting. Their shots aren’t going in as much as they’re missing, and that’s a problem. They also need to work on not falling for feints, they fall for them even more than missing their shots” Coach laughs at my comments, and nods.

“It’s nice to have you on the team, Axel. Not just because you’re the missing number 8, but because they listen to you. They respect you, and will do what you tell them to. Hell, if you tell them to jump into a dumpster to find a dime, they’d probably do it” Coach says and we laugh.

“They respect me because of my basketball skills and my history. But I’m glad they take my advice though, it’s going to help this team improve a lot. Who knows, maybe one day they’ll be able to compare with the ‘best junior varsity team that this country has had'” I say and Coach chuckles.

“Maybe one day. You’re not going to change?” Coach asks and I shake my head.

“Nah. I need to wait for my boyfriend, Jay. He was worried that the boys would harass me in the locker room for destroying them” I say and Coach laughs.

“Jay’s a good kid. Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow at practice then” Coach waves, and goes into his office.

I close my eyes and rest my head on the wall. I feel someone’s arm snake around my waist, and I open my eyes to see Jay smiling at me. I smile back, and give him a peck on the lips.

“Sorry I took so long, practice was held back because Coach got pissed at us. How was it? Are they angry?” Jay asks with a concerned look.

I laugh, “No, quite the opposite. I think they’re actually quite happy with me, they were hella shocked by my skills. You’re now looking at the new basketball team captain” I say smugly and Jay smiles proudly at me. He pulls me in for another kiss, and pulling away to look at me with a fond smile.

“You’re amazing, you know that?” he says and I blush.

“I hear that quite often” I say, and he smiles.

“How was practice?” I ask and he shrugs.

“The usual, did some passing drills and just ran a bunch of laps. I’m just really tired” he says and I smile.

“Let’s go home and watch a movie, then cuddle”

“Sounds great” I say, and he smiles.

He stands up and grabs my hand, pulling me up with him. We walk out the school and to his car, hand-in-hand.

The school parking lot’s empty now, as we ended up leaving an hour after practices end. We get into Jay’s car, and drove back to our home.
