Akaza gave him a slight smile then wandered out the door and into the halls, his mind stuck on the image of Douma’s smile.

The day flew by and Douma found himself constantly wanting to go to the room Akaza was staying in but he paused with each step and always turned back, not wanting to upset the other.

Finally, night drew by and Akaza left his room and bumped into Douma who had just convinced himself to not talk to Akaza.

“Ah… Of course you had to be right in front of my room,” Akaza deadpanned.

“I’m sorry!! I was… looking for, uhm, one of the women.” Douma laughed nervously, unsure what to do.

“Okay, whatever. I’ll go now.” Akaza turned and headed towards the exit.

“Wait!”

“What?” He turned back, exasperated.

The blond caught up with him quickly and held his wrist gently. “You can stay here anytime, Akaza-dono! You can come back when the sun rises again,” he said eagerly.

“When did I say I wanted to come back?” Akaza asked, raising an eyebrow.

Douma let go of his wrist and looked down. “Right. Okay!” he said, quickly changing back to his chipper self. “Then, stay safe, Akaza-dono! I’ll see you… Uhm, bye!”

Akaza nodded. “Bye?”

Once he was gone, Douma trudged back to his room.

“Ehm, Lord Douma?” someone asked.

“Yes?” he looked up.

“You have a patient tonight,” the man said. “Is it alright if they see you now, though it is late?”

“Yes! Let them in.” Douma smiled.

The door opened and a woman stepped in, looking nervous. The door closed behind her and she sat down.

“What’s bothering you?” Douma asked, noting her posture.

She hesitated.

“It’s okay! You can tell me, it’ll be our secret,” Douma said, smiling and placing a finger to his lips.

“You look like something’s bothering you, though,” she said, finally looking up at him.

“Me?” Genuine surprise laced his voice. Was something bothering him? “What do you mean?”

“You look troubled,” she said, shrugging. “How are you supposed to help me if you’re not okay?”

He blinked. “I’m… fine?” he said, confused.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes! Now let’s get back to you,” he said, clapping his hands.

She pouted as if she hadn’t been the one to come here herself. “I don’t believe you can help me if you can’t let yourself be helped!” she said.

“No, ah, the Gods themself will help me,” Douma said quickly, smiling in an attempt to change the subject.

She sighed. “Something is bothering you, right?” she asked. She put a finger to her lips, mimicking his pose from earlier. “It can be our secret, I won’t tell!”

Douma hesitated, then sighed knowing she would continue to be persistent. Humans were always like that and really, maybe they were also more perceptive with emotions too. “Fine. There’s this… person who, uhm,” he paused. He couldn’t say anything about demons because, even if she’d promised to keep it a secret or if he ate her, she might somehow be able to spread the word around and there were already rumours about this place that weren’t all that… good.

“Go on,” she encouraged. “There’s a person?”

“Right. Uhm. I want to be friends with them but they won’t talk to me as much as I wish they did and… earlier, they helped me with something. It made me happy and I don’t know how they felt about it but they seemed more content around me then than usual.” Douma looked down. “I’m bad with my own emotions sometimes and I couldn’t figure out something but they helped me, and now I want to talk to them more but they left and they said “Why would I want to stay with you?” of some sorts.”

The woman nodded. “So you want to speak to them again but they brushed you aside?” she asked. “And you want to be their friend?”

“Yes!” Douma said, surprised she’d understood. Well, humans could be smart every now and then, he supposed. Even if she had come to him for help when he wouldn’t actually really do anything to help. “I don’t know why I really want to talk to him, he’s just so… different. Than other people, I mean. He makes me feel more than usual,” he rambled.

She smiled. “Do you love him?”

Startled, Douma looked up. “Love him? No, I don’t love him. I don’t think so?” he said quietly, more to himself. Did he? “…Maybe,” he admitted. It would explain his own persistence in talking to Akaza. He was not really like this with other people. Or at least he didn’t care as much about talking to them to the point it affected him enough for a human to notice.

The woman laughed. “You don’t have to know for sure. Try talking to him more, maybe. You seem very charming,” she said, smiling at him gently. “He’s sure to cave eventually.”

“Really, you think so?” Douma said hopefully.

“Perhaps,” she said. “People are unpredictable but there’s always a chance.”

There was a chance, hm? Douma smiled back at her thankfully. “Alright, we can go back to you now. Thanks.”

She shook her head. “I feel better now,” she said.

“You do? Why?” he asked, confused.

“I suppose after doing it for your whole life, you wouldn’t notice, but helping people sometimes tends to help yourself as well.” She smiled and stood. “Thank you and I hope he talks to you. Have a good night.”

Douma nodded, albeit confused about what had happened, and waved as she left. How could helping other people help you too? That didn’t make sense.

He sighed. Probably another emotion thing he’d have to learn.

There was a knock at the door.

As Douma approached it, he realized it was a demon and not a human.

Akaza stood there, looking nervous and embarrassed.

“Akaza-dono!! Hello!! Is the sun about to come up? Why’re you back?” Douma asked, ushering him in.

Akaza huffed. “The sun won’t come up for thirty minutes.”

“Then how come you’re back? You said you wouldn’t come back,” Douma pointed out, leading them to his room.

“I never said that,” Akaza said, plopping down on Douma’s usual seat.

“Oh.”

They sat—well, Akaza sat, Douma stood—in silence for a moment.

“Akaza-dono?”

“What?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“You just did.”

Douma laughed. “Can I ask you a… third question?”

“Fine.” Akaza looked up, his attention on the blond.

“Will you be my boyfriend?” Douma asked, smiling.

“I- What?” Akaza stared at him in disbelief, thinking it was a joke.

“Will you be my boyfriend?” he repeated, confused as to the response he got.

“Why so sudden…?” Akaza asked, blushing profusely. He turned his face away.

Douma shrugged. “I was thinking about it! I want you to be my boyfriend!” he said cheerfully, oblivious to Akaza’s embarrassment.

“Uhm… Is this a prank?” Akaza said uncertaintly. He hoped it wasn’t.

“No! Why would it be?”

“I wouldn’t put it past you to find this funny,” he said, rolling his eyes.

“Well it’s not for a joke! I swear, Akaza-dono. Anyway, I don’t find doing things for fun all too appealing,” Douma said, tapping his chin in thought. “I’m only saying if you would like to date me?”

“I…. Why?” Akaza asked, still in denial.

“I love you, Akaza-dono!” Douma said, nodding to himself. “And yesterday you were helping me and I felt… actually happy!”

Akaza raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“Yeah! So, will you be my boyfriend?”

“What happens if I say yes?” Akaza asked.

“We can start dating,” Douma said.

“And if I say no?”

“Then… we don’t,” he responded, frowning slightly. “Will you say no or yes?”

Akaza sighed and crossed his arms. “Fine.”

“Huh?”

“I can be your boyfriend,” he mumbled, his cheeks the shade of his hair.
