Kotoha wrapped up Inosuke in some cloth and then picked him up, cradling him in her arms. “Okay, I’m ready!” she said, turning and smiling over at Douma.
“Alright, let’s go!” Douma returned, smiling back in turn. He was getting better at smiling in a more genuine way, especially since he met Kotoha.
The two left the cult room and head out to the back where Douma had some people cultivate flowers. At first he’d only just had flowers grown there so he could use them to charm women by giving them a bundle of flowers, now he did it because Kotoha seemed to love them—though Douma never understood why.
The two sat down, Inosuke still in Kotoha’s arms and waited a beat, staring up at the sky which was glowing with stars. Douma pointed out one particularily bright star and said, “That one must be you!”
“Why?” Kotoha asked, turning to look at the blond.
“You always smile so brightly,” Douma explained. “You could be the sun one day! Maybe when you die you’ll come back as a star.”
Kotoha smiled at that and she gazed up at the star which Douma had pointed to. “Maybe we can both come back as stars and we’ll be side by side, watching over Inosuke.”
At his name, Inosuke wriggled in Kotoha’s arms and she laughed, booping his nose. Douma said nothing, and thought Kotoha took his silence as wonder at the sky, he was simply quiet because he knew he wouldn’t be dying any time soon, and certainly not when Kotoha would. He might bring himself to care for Inosuke maybe, though.
Then there was a loud sound which startled Inosuke to tears. Kotoha just laughed though and covered her child’s ears as she turned her attention back to the sky which glowed with light as fireworks shot up and sparkled in the night.
Douma had known there would be fireworks because he’d overheard one of his meal’s say so before he had attacked, so he confirmed it by asking around and then decided to take Kotoha to see them out here. It was nice because, in this specific part, there were no trees since Douma had insisted they’d be taken down for the garden of flowers.
Kotoha marveled at the lights as more red, yellow, green, and blue fireworks brightened up the night. Douma smiled at this, unconscious of his body’s decision to until he felt the muscles in his face relax into it and his eyes widened in surprise. He put a hand to his mouth and then looked over at Kotoha then to the fireworks and back. He was smiling..?Â
Inosuke, who was still quite upset by all the noise, was starting to calm down by the lights. Eventually he stopped crying and his eyes focused on the fireworks as one after another flew into the sky. The lights reflected on Kotoha’s and Inosuke’s eyes and Douma was content. They were human so they wouldn’t last forever, but he would certainly not forget these particular humans.Â
He sat back and relaxed as the fireworks continued throughout the night.
