Uta and Yoriichi had always been the exact opposites. Uta, always so lively and full of energy, and Yoriichi, so collected and quiet. But, as many say, opposites attract and that certainly applied here.
The two, as children, grew fond of each other and as their minds and bodies matured they fell in love. Yoriichi promised on his life he would do everything for Uta, and the two were close in their little house in the woods. They didn’t need much to be content, both having experienced loss as children and yet so happy just to be together.
For a long time, the two lived happily and nothing seemed to be stopping that. Nothing lasts forever, something Uta pointed out one particular day. She’d woken up with a headache and had felt bad that morning. Yoriichi had comforted her and asked what was wrong.
“I had a dream where someone was slaughtered,” Uta had said, massaging her temples in an attempt to cease the headache.
“Oh? Do you know who it was?” Yoriichi asked, raising an eyebrow. He sat next to his wife, cradling her in his arms as she explained.
“I think it was me, but it was hard to tell. Just a lot of blood.” She sighed and leaned against Yoriichi. “But anyways, even if I do die, it’s not like anything lasts forever.”
Yoriichi, surprised at this comment for Uta was always so optimistic, hadn’t said anything. He was trying to think of something to say to comfort her, but he failed and just pursed his lips, quiet. Then Uta added, “well, I mean, I’ll love you forever!” She smiled brightly and turned to place a quick kiss on his cheek.
Yoriichi smiled then, and he agreed. “Yes, and I will love you forever as well. You needn’t worry, I’ll make sure you’re safe.”
Uta’s whole mood seem to brighten and she sat up, carefully extracting her from his embrace. “I’ll go make us breakfast, okay?”
“No, you have a headache, I’ll do it, it’s alright,” Yoriichi insisted, standing.
Uta followed his movement. “But I wanted to make you something! Besides, isn’t your birthday next week? Let me do it!”
“My birthday..?” Yoriichi raised an eyebrow. “Have you been keeping track again?”
“Yes, well,” Uta grinned, “You told me when we were younger and I never was able to give you something but I wrote it down on a paper for when I would be able to give you a gift more then a flower, and recently I was going through my old things and found it. Just on time! Now let me cook!”
“My birthday is next week, you can cook next week, I’ll do it today,” Yoriichi said, his light laughter floating through the air.
Uta, who always treasured the moments she was able to make Yoriichi smile or laugh, finally caved in. “Fine, but I’m making it tomorrow then.”
“Alright, dear,” Yoriichi said, patting her head. He walked away and Uta sat down on the bed, smiling. Maybe things don’t last forever, but it was the present that she must cherish while it was here.
It seemed their happiness was only growing when later Uta discovered she was pregnant. Yoriichi seemed quite content at the idea that they were going to have a child but he also became very protective of Uta whom he wouldn’t let out of his sight if he could. Uta only found this amusing and relished in the extra attention.
But of course, Uta was right. Thing really don’t last forever. And Yoriichi discovered that the hard way.
Having set off to find a midwife to help Uta deliver the child, Yoriichi had ended up crossing paths with someone else in need. He decided that Uta still had a week or two left until the baby arrived so he helped the man instead. By the time he finished, it was too late to go walking around, so he set back to his wife that night.
Unfortunately someone else had gotten there first and, bursting into the house from the concern of the door already open, Yoriichi found Uta and their unborn child dead.
He shook in disbelief, emotions coursing through his body in a wave of panic. What had happened here? Who had done this?
He was in a daze for several days as he cradled Uta’s body. How could this have happened? Why? Why now? Why must everything come in his path and ruin his life? Did he do something to displease the gods? Was he unworthy of simply having the people he loved alive and well?
