Nico opened his eyes. Everything in his bedroom was black. It was so much black, too much, even for Nico. But, he had no input on the design, because his father had made the room for him. He stood and looked at the clock. It read 3:00 PM. He had to get ready for his father’s party. Why the King of the Underworld was having a party in the middle of a war, Nico didn’t understand. Probably to find a suitor for him. Nico had made up his mind about who he wanted to marry. He had seen him before at some of his father’s past parties. His name was Will Solace. They had been secretly dating for a while. The problem, though, was that the boy was a child of the Sun, unwillingly a resident of the Sky Kingdom. Currently, the Sky Kingdom was attacking the Sea and Underworld Kingdoms, because King Zeus was power hungry and wanted to rule the whole world. Hades, instead of fighting Zeus’s armies himself, was using skeletal armies against his brother, and instead was partying in his palace. Nico sighed at this, and began dressing himself for the party. He chose a black silk button up and black ripped skinny jeans. He heard a knock on the door.
“Go away!” he yelled.
“Ouch, bro.” In the doorway stood Hazel, his beautiful sister.
“Oh, I didn’t know it was you, Haze. Sorry.” Nico went over and joined his sister, who was wearing a bright pink silk dress that hugged her silhouette beautifully, accentuating her curves. Hazel loved color, which was a tiny bit odd for the Princess of the Underworld. She often wore bright colored dresses that she made herself, since her closet was all black like Nico’s. Together, the siblings walked to the party.
It wasn’t much fun. Nico had to meet all of his “possible suitors”. He had no interest in any of them. They were all dark, ghostly, and moody. He preferred happy, bright, lively people. Basically the opposite of himself. He was extremely bored. Suddenly, something exploded into smoke and bright white light. An attack from the Sky Kingdom. Nico felt a gag hastily wrapped around his mouth and felt himself be picked up by his hands and feet and started to be carried away. He kicked and screamed and fought, but the kidnappers hit him on the head with something, and he went limp.
He woke up in a jail cell. A dungeon, perhaps. Nico shook his head, and regretted it immediately. He was still in pain from the bonk on the head, with a heavy ache at the back of his skull. He blinked and looked around. Someone else was in the cell with him. Percy Jackson. Percy gave a small wave.
“Hey. You alright? You’ve been passed out since they brought you here a couple hours ago,” the sea prince said.
“Yeah…I’m fine. Where is ‘here’, exactly?” Nico asked.
“Apollo’s palace. Sky Kingdom attacked both of our Kingdoms. Using us for leverage I guess.” Nico’s heart skipped. If this was Apollo’s palace that means Will has got to be here. He might rescue them. Suddenly, as if on cue, a thud echoed through the hall. The guard who was making sure they didn’t leave was laying on the ground, with a certain son of Apollo standing over his body (the guard isn’t dead btw, he’s just unconscious. Will’s not a killer). Nico’s heart leaped in his chest.
“Will!” Nico smiled.
“Nico! Are you okay? You were unconscious when they dragged you in here,” Will said. He put his hands through the bars and pressed his palms to Nico’s cheeks.
“I’m…okay. This is Percy, Poseidon’s son.” Will and Percy both nodded and smiled to each other respectfully.
“You might want to back up, Sunshine. And both of you close your eyes.” Will held the lock in his right hand. After Nico and Percy both closed their eyes, he started to glow. He concentrated his heat to melt the chains. A bright flash of light, and the chain fell to the ground. Will pulled the door open. Nico immediately ran to him and kissed him, holding his face in his hands and standing on his tiptoes to reach Will’s face. Will stumbled backward into the wall behind them. He instinctively snaked his arms around Nico’s waist.
“Guys? Hate to break up the moment, but that might be a problem.” Nico and Will looked to where Percy was pointing. Apollo’s army was charging at them.
“Aaand there’s our cue to run.” Will grabbed Nico’s hand and pulled him with him to the exit. Percy uncapped his pen, which turned into his sword, Riptide. Will unsheathed a sword and held it in his right hand, Nico’s hand in his left. They continued to run.
“Any boats? I can sail!” Percy yelled to Will.
“Yeah, this way! You’ll have to move like hell, though, or they’ll catch you.” Will led them through the castle to the shore. There, several ships were lined up by a dock. They ran down the dock and Percy ran aboard one of the smaller boats and started to untie it. Nico ran onto the boat, but stopped he felt Will’s hand slip out of his.
“Will? We have to go!”
“Someone has to take the blame. Go, Nico!”
“No! I’m not leaving without you, Will! Get your ass on this boat right now!” Nico pulled Will’s arm, but Will was stronger than him and didn’t budge. Will held Nico’s face in his left hand.
“I love you, Nico.” He pressed his lips to Nico’s. He quickly pulled away and shoved Nico onto the boat that started speeding away. Tears streamed down Nico’s face.
“Will! No, gods dammit! I can’t lose you again!” Nico yelled over the side.
“I love you, Nico! I’ll be okay, Sunshine!” Will called back as he was bound and gagged. Nico sunk to his knees. He sobbed. He couldn’t handle seeing the army take Will away.
“Goodbye, Percy.” And Nico melted into the shadow of the boat.
Hades was furious with his brother. He ordered a guard to protect Nico at all times. Nico could barely use the rest room alone. The guard was always waiting right outside the bathroom door. Nico wanted some alone time. He told the guard he was going to shower, and slammed the door shut. He slumped down. Suddenly, an arrow shot through his window and impaled itself in his door. Had Nico not ducked, he would’ve been stabbed in the throat. He looked up at the arrow and the guard pounded his door.
“Prince di Angelo? What was that?” Nico realized there was a note attached to the arrow. ‘Hey. It’s Percy. Come to the window!’. The guard pounded again. “Prince di Angelo!”
“Oh, uh…it’s nothing! I threw my shoe at the door! Doc Martens are…hEaVy,” Nico lied. The guard seemed to consider his answer, and stayed silent. Nico was relieved, and ran to the window, where there was a boy about a story down on the ground. He had blonde curly hair and bright blue eyes and a crooked, sarcastic smile. Obviously it was Percy Jackson.
“Come on! We gotta go!”
“Do what?”
“Save your boyfriend, duh!” Nico felt the color rush to his face. He thought for a minute, then summoned a bunch of skeletons out of the ground by Percy. The sea prince jumped and yelled.
“A bit of a warning next time?” he said, as the skeletons formed a ladder out of their bones. Nico climbed out the window and down the ladder, making the bones disappear after he was safely on the ground.
“So, what’s the plan?”
“Well, I have an associate that can get us in. She can get us a boat, so we can get away, she can help with a distraction, and she knows where Will is and how to free him.”
“So…how are we getting there?”
“Well…I was hoping we could shadow travel…if that’s ok. Otherwise we’d have to get to the exit of the Underworld and find the entrance to Apollo’s kingdom, which might take forever.” Nico sighed annoyedly. Then, he grabbed Percy’s arm and shadow-traveled them to a forest outside of the Palace of the Sun. Percy guided Nico along through the trees, to where their “associate” would meet them. Percy stopped in a clearing of trees and stretched his back.
“Where’s your associate, Jackson?” Percy pointed down in front of Nico. A small red headed girl with freckles stood there, no older than 10.
“Hi. I’m Kayla. I’m 8, and I’m the Princess of the Sun,” she said, smiling. “Percy said you’re gonna free my brother?”
“Uh, I’m Nico and yeah. We are gonna free Will, Kayla. You good with that?”
“Um, a’course I am! I don’t like Daddy’s palace. And I miss my brother! Now come on, Nico! We gots to go!” Kayla grabbed Nico’s hand and pulled him through the underbrush, getting a wave goodbye from Percy, who ran in the other direction toward the sea and the docks.
Kayla led Nico to a series of tunnels leading around the palace. She pulled Nico along behind her, asking him questions as they crawled through the tight tunnels.
“Nico?”
“Yeah, Kayla?”
“Do you like my brother?”
“H-how do you mean?” Nico’s cheeks were red.
“The way my dad likes Hyacinthus. Do you like Will the same way?”
“Um..yeah. Yeah, I do Kayla. Is that okay?” Kayla nodded vigorously.
“Will likes you too, Nico.”
“H-he does, does he?”
“Mhm! And he said he wants to marry you! He said he loves you, Nico.” Nico blushed and smiled. He almost giggled. Oh Will, he thought. “Do you love my brother, Nico?”
“I…I do love your brother, Kayla. What do you think of that?”
“I love it! You guys have to get married and…” Kayla gasped in realization. “Can I be the flower girl?” She put on her best puppy dog eyes.
“Of course!”
“Wait.” Kayla stopped. “You won’t…leave me here…right?” Kayla had a serious tone, too serious for an eight year old. Nico’s heart shattered.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” He ruffled her hair as she smiled.
“Alright, he’s through there in the dungeon. We just need a distraction and I can get him out,” Kayla said. Nico eyed the little tiara on Kayla’s head.
“Can I borrow that?”
“Hey, I’ve got your princess’ crown, whaddaya gonna do about it?” Kayla heard Nico say, as she snuck towards the dungeon. Will gasped when he saw her.
“Kayla! Go away, you’ll get in trouble!”
“Come on Will! Nico and Percy and here to save you! Now tell me how to do the light-melt thingy!”
“Nico came back for me?” Will was in shock, and in love.
“Yes! Come on! Melty thingy! Tell me now!” Will instructed Kayla on how to melt the lock. He couldn’t do it himself because the guards had put magic handcuffs on him, making it so he couldn’t use his powers. Kayla melted the lock and opened the door.
Will held out his wrists. “Do these the same way.”
“I don’t wanna hurt you!” Will shook his head.
“I’ll be fine, now do it.” Kayla melted the handcuffs and Will quickly threw down the melted metal, trying to keep it from touching his skin. His wrists were burned in red bracelets, and he winced. He was immune to most high temperatures, but seeing as Kayla summoned power the temperature of the freaking sun, it still burned him.
“Will! Your wrists!”
“I’m fine,” Will said, though he most certainly was not. His wrists screamed in agony. “C’mon Kayla, where’s Nico?”
Speak of the devil, Nico came running down the hallway, chased by several guards.
“Go, Go, Go!” he shouted, and Kayla and Will turned and started running towards the docks, where Percy was waiting with a boat. As soon as he saw them, he shouted towards them.
“Over here!” They all quickly boarded the boat, and Percy willed it to take off at a breathtaking speed. Nico, Will, and Kayla all breathed heavily. Will pressed his hands to Nico’s face.
“I’m so glad your ok,” he said, his breathing regulating.
“Me too.” Nico leaned in and kissed Will. He caught him by surprise, but Will relaxed and sighed into the kiss.
“Guys! No kissing until the wedding!” Kayla shrieked. Nico playfully pushed Will away from him.
“You heard her, William, no kissing until the wedding!”
“Wha- Hey! That’s not fair!”
Nico was met at the door to the underworld with a very angry Hades.
“Leaving? And telling no one? Right after Zeus kidnapped you! Wow. Nico, I thought you were better than this!”
“Dad, Will rescued me! He sacrificed himself, and turned himself in! I had to save him!”
“NONSENSE! He is a member of the SKY kingdom, and in case you’ve forgotten, is our ENEMY!”
“BUT I LOVE HIM!” Nico shouted back. “I…love him, Dad, please. I had to save him, because I love him. And he loves me.”
Hades took a shaking deep breath. Nico regretted yelling, for fear of the consequences to come to him. He knelt in front of Hades. “Father, I-“
“Do you truly?”
“W-What?”
“Do you truly love him? Do you wish to marry him?”
“I…Yes. I love him. I want to marry him.”
“And he doesn’t want to harm you in any way? He loves you in return?”
“Yes, Father.”
“You may marry him if you so desire.” Nico looked up. Hades’ words was genuine.
“You mean…”
“Yes. I give you my blessing. Only if you truly love each other, and he swears on the Styx to never harm you.” Nico stood and ran into Hades, embracing him. Hades was taken aback, but hugged his son in return.
“Thank you, Father.” Hades felt tears soak through his robes, and patted Nico’s shoulder awkwardly. Nico pulled away with red eyes and a smile on his face, and ran back to Will, tackling him in a running hug. Hades watched as Will wrapped his arms around Nico, careful not to let him fall, and spun around in a circle. He returned him to ground as Nico kissed him, dipping him. Nico almost fell backward he was giggling so much. He had his palms pressed to Will’s face and they were nose to nose. Kayla had a secret stash of flower petals for some reason, and decided to throw them on the boys, while Percy stood off to the side, smiling.
The boys were determined to end the war.
So they did.
Hades and Poseidon fought side by side, joined by their sons. Zeus was overthrown, and now a just ruler sat upon the throne: Jason Grace along with his queen, Piper McLean. Percy ruled the sea with Annabeth, and Nico and Hazel ruled the Underworld together. Frank and Will both wanted no part in the royal nonsense, so they let the siblings take control. Nico and Will were married, and yes.
Kayla was the flower girl.
2552 words gods dam. I’m so proud 🥲
This is the longest oneshot I have ever written. Literally.
I hate how this ends though it’s so rushed.
I got bored of it tbh
