the adrenaline constantly pumping through my veins whenever I played football was something I always looked forward to. ever since the accident I had to find a distraction, anything. anything to stop me from thinking about it. I just wanted to take it all back and erase it from my memory.
I drank, a lot. I was always drinking and partying after it happened. I didn’t have the capacity to think about it when I drank. I fucked any girl with no mind to the consequences of my actions. all my healthy habits were thrown out the window. my family fell apart all because of something I did or rather didn’t do.
i think about you every day.
my physical state was deteriorating so i decided to get back to playing football. i mainly played with my father and younger sister. we played nearly everyday and eventually, as fragile as my mental state was, i tried out for my school’s team.
i was good, excellent in fact. i ended up playing nationally and i finally remembered how it felt to be at ease. happy. something i was never used to because of my self sabotage tendencies. i didn’t think i deserved anything good and too a large extent i still think so.
i think some part of me will always be broken no matter how hard i try. that day a part of myself died that I will never get back.
there were many year juniors and seniors trying out, maybe 60 or so. the coach was running late so we had time on our hands. there’s no-one i recognize from here except Jason and his goonies. Jessica and her minions along with some other girls and guys were watching the trials from the bleachers. she waved her hand at me me and i waved back. common decency.
Jason and his goonies approached me but he was the one who spoke first. “Romen I’m glad you could make it. this is Darren and caleb.” he pointed to the African American and the white dude. i was about to reply when Darren swore, “fuck, i was really hoping he wouldn’t be here this year.” i frowned then turned around to see who they were talking about. Alystair. i smirked. i ignored them like they weren’t even there and walked towards him. This is going to be fun.
“Alyss I actually think you’re stalking me now.” i couldn’t hide the smirk from my face.
he groaned, “you’re literally everywhere i go now.” he wasn’t wrong though. “why do they seem to hate you so much?” i referred to jason and his friends.
“cause jason thinks i’m going to steal his captain spot this year and his ex- girlfriend from last year kept flirting with me but he keeps blaming me.” the more he looked at jason the more agitated he got. “I’m surprised you noticed her flirting with you.” I said and he halted in his tracks. “what do you mean by that?” he frowned. “literally most of the girls I’ve come across in this school has some sort of fixation or crush on you.” he thought about it and said, “shame on them, I’m not interested.” it baffled me really, he is good looking and can have anyone he wants but instead he turns everyone down.
“Alystair for your own good you better not try go for captain.” jason approached him. “yeah?” Alystair stepped closer. “maybe you should go tell your girlfriend that…oh wait where is she again?” he smirked and the others immediately grabbed him by his collar. I stepped in and pushed him away. “i wouldn’t do that if i were you.” they scoffed and turned back towards me. “what are you gonna do about it Romen. didn’t you just get here?” i scoffed and patronized him, “isn’t that your girlfriend there?” i pointed towards her. it was Jessica. that much was obvious from the way she clung to him in the hallways. “try me, i’ll take her away from you as fast as you got her.”
“you bitch.” he lunged for me but I took his arm and slightly twisted it, “you really wanna do this Jason?” I smirked the entire time and looked at Alystair for a brief second. he was smiling at me. I winked at him and surprisingly he winked back with that stupid God forsaken smile instead of frowning. “Jason you’re truly pathetic, I nearly pity you. you don’t have to worry about me going for captain we both know i don’t care about people to that extent.”
I let go of jason and waved at him when they walked away. he was straightening his clothes out when he shot me a glare. Alystair let a chuckle slip and gave me this look, “you’re a wild one Romen.” he was still smiling at me but i was confused by it. “i’m the wild one, you’re the one who provokes people.” i said as we approached the field. the coach was here now and Jason and his goonies were on the other side of us now.
“alright now most of you must know me now but for those of you who don’t my name is coach Rowland. i will be putting up the names of who made it tomorrow on the school’s bulletin board.” he shouted across the many students. the coach sorted us into teams, jason and his clerk were in one team and Alystair and I were in one along with others.
Alystair played like a beast. the way he moved his body and the ball as one was perfection. he was just as good as me and we worked well together. i was kicking the ball towards the net when Jason was about to kick my leg. i skilled him, kicked the ball over my head and caught it in front of me. his goonies came after me and i quickly passed the ball to my right were Alystair was and he shot it into the net. our team won and the coach dismissed us.
i walked with Alystair to the dorms when the coach stopped us. “Romen Abarra?” he asked in question. “that’s me.” he looked me over and said, “well done son you play really well. at this rate you could play for nationals.” i know. “thank you sir.” he looked over to Alystair. “Satori.” he nodded at him the left. “he’s not wrong.” Alystair said when he left. i did a double take,
“you’re getting soft now alyss.” i walked upstairs to my dorm and he glared at me. we always seemed to do that whenever we got here, someone had to have the last word.
