Summer break came quicker than expected.
The school term was coming to an end tomorrow. If you met the Romen from a year ago he would have been ecstatic at the at the prospect of holidays. But for the first time in my life i was dreading it.
I leaned against my locker waiting for the others. Zainab ran up to me panting. “Alystair is…” I got off the locker in panic.
No words needed to be said, my heart lurched out of my chest at the idea of something being wrong with him.
She pointed her hand to the classroom at the end of the hallway, i ran before she could even explain a thing. Please be okay. I ran and pushed anyone who stood in my way. The gasps of students didn’t bother me one bit, so long as Alystiar was okay they could fall for all i care.
“Alyss?” I threw the door open. There he was. Unscathed. I raised my eyebrow. “What is it?” He gave me a bored look. The laugh Zainab and Zora let out told me everything i needed to know. I glared at them. “I thought you were hurt or something.” I said and he raised his eyebrow. He glanced between Zora and Zainab and a knowing look crossed his face. “They pranked you didn’t they?” I tsked in response. “So…” he pushed himself of the table he was leaning on, “if i was hurt you’d actually look for me” he stated as he stalked up to me but kept his distance. “Of course i would, there’s nothing that could keep me from coming to you.” I teased but Zora and Zainab’s laughter died down at my words. They knew. They knew how i felt. I only ever teased him but everything i said has only ever been the truth.
His features softened a little, a trick of the lighting and my mind. In another life i would wish for it to be true.
“So guys…” Zora cleared her throat. We gave her our attention. “Where are you guys going for summer break?” Zainab let out a sound of annoyance as soon as the words left her mouth and wiped her palms over her face, “I can’t believe i have to go home to my brothers.” I genuinely felt sorry for her but i could not stop the feint chuckle that left my mouth. I cant imagine 4 other people like me. “What about you guys?” I asked the others.
“We’re gonna stay at our apartment.” Zora’s sigh was a mimic of the scowl Alyss wore.
“Come home with me.” I offered them. Zainab paused and jumped up and down at the suggestion. “Are you sure it wont be a bother?” Zora asked with a sadness i could not decipher. “Not at all I’ll just tell my mom about it and destiny wants to meet you all anyways.” I turned around to see what Alyss would say and my heart melted in a way that was completely foreign to me. A small smile washed over his face.
“Oh my gosh is that a smile Alystair?” Zainab forcefully squished his cheeks, our laughter took over the room. “I want to meet destiny, she has a lot to say.” He threw me a look and i remembered what he meant. Destiny was gossiping about what i told her to Alystair. “That’s why you wanna come? Not yes Romen of course I want to meet my in laws or yes Romen I’ll follow you to the ends of the earth?” I teased him. “And that.” He teased me back. “Fuck you.” I shot at him but a smile still made its way to my face. “Now wouldn’t you want that.” Oh he’s got banter today. “If you want that Alyss all you have to do is ask you know damn well I’ll give it to you.” He threw me a scowl. I smirked at that.
“So we leave tomorrow!” Zora jumped up and down and ran in to hug me, I ran my fingers through her hair. “Thank you Romen I don’t know anyone who would do this for us.” She mumbled against my shirt. “It’s no biggie.” I smiled genuinely. These three make life so much better, worth living. Everything slowed down when I was around them.
“Now we leave tomorrow so please for your own safety be on time, my African mother does not play your little games.” I pointed at all of them to make sure i got my point across.
Classes ended in a bore but excitement for the holiday could be seen in everyone, Talks of vacation filled the hallways all day. I got to my dorm room and called my mom. The phone rang 4 times before she picked up.
“ROMEN.” I pulled the phone away me and scratched my ear. “Ma would you like me to loose my hearing before i even get back home?” I heard Destiny’s disgusting laugh as i spoke. “Mom?” I dragged my words. “What do you want now?” I scoffed as I could practically see her rolling her eyes. “Can my friends come home with me for the holidays you know the ones I told you about?” She was about to respond before Destiny interrupted. “Yes mom pleaseee Alystair is so cool and he said he wants to see some of my paintings.” I was surprised Alystair said that considering he doesn’t like hanging out with anyone. “They are more than welcome to as long as one of them can bake.” I Threw my head back and chuckled. My mom loves her baking more than her husband and she makes sure everyone gets a taste of her delicacy’s. “Thank you mom.” Before i hung up i could her destiny’s faint squeal. It’s surprising she likes Alyss this much seeing as she’s hated most of the friends i made over the course of my life.
I hit the bed with a thump. I didn’t even bother changing out of my uniform as sleep consumed me like a sleep deprived mother of 5.
