The next part of the rehearsal took another 90 minutes until they called it a day. The discussed mistakes, came up with improvements and went over a few songs to try out the adjustments. It was a pleasure for Evie for observe everything as she had always been a fan of the performing arts. She had been in numerous theatre productions and rehearsals do not bore her at all. The dancers and everyone involved in the rehearsal gathered their stuff and made their way out of the studio after a long and exhausting day. Evie was obviously not exhausted by just sitting and observing the scene and waited for Taylor with anticipation. But while there was excitement there was also a bit of fear. Talking about your own music with an agent and a management was already nerve-racking to her but discussing it with a well-known and very successful artist who appeared to know everything about songwriting seemed very scary. “Ready to go?”, Taylor asked Evie and disrupted her thoughts. She was now wearing a violet sweatshirt over her sports bra and changed her hair in a messy pony tail. Evie nodded but was a little confused as she didn’t who what Taylor meant because she expected to talk about her setlist in the studio. Taylor noticed her puzzled expression and quickly added “There’s a little room with a keyboard by the elevator which is probably free. The studio here was only booked until now.”.
They made their way to the room which was indeed empty and sat down on the small yellow sofa that stood in the right half of the room while the key board was placed in the left half and faced the pale wall. “As I already said, this list is just an idea and I am not sure yet…”, Evie started to rumble as soon as they sat down. She grabbed her phone and opened her notes app while Taylor assured her that she still got plenty of time and that it is normal to change your plans over and over again when it comes to music. Finally, Evie found the most recent version of her setlist and shyly showed it Taylor who read it with a really concentrated expression on her phase. Suddenly it dawned Evie that she probably has to show Taylor her songs on Spotify because she was sure that she wouldn’t really know her songs besides the one song she had sung at the AMAS which went viral on social media the previous winter. But before Evie could suggest listening to the songs before talking about the setlist, Taylor already started talking. “Well, I think “Hello Darling” as the opening song is a good choice, because it is one of your more popular songs but not your most streamed one. It gives the audience the chance to already feel familiar with you but leaves them with the anticipation for “Good Riddance” which everyone probably knows.”. Taylor was in the middle of her monologue and Evie had no chance to disrupt her if she had wanted to. “But I wouldn’t end your set with “Our time” because it’s too slow. It’s better to end with a more upbeat tune to leave the audience with a positive vibe you know?”, Taylor continued and looked Evie in the eyes after staring at her phone screen for quite some time.Â
Evie knew what Taylor meant and wanted to follow her advice in order to create the best set possible but she was also really surprised. Surprised that Taylor not only knew her most known song and maybe just the names of a view others, but actually knew how the more unknown songs sounded. Before meeting Taylor, Evie had the thought that Taylors team and not she herself looked out for smaller artists to book as support-acts and found Evie. Taylor must have had noticed Evies reaction as she said to her “I stumbled upon your music on TikTok before the AMAs and enjoyed your sound and lyrics. When I saw you live and noticed that you can also perform really well I knew that you would have to support the tour.” “Thats…a surprise and a great compliment, thanks.”, Evie replied and her heart was full. She had already been grateful that she would perform on stage in front of so many Taylor Swift fans but hearing from Taylor Swift herself that she actually enjoyed her music and her performance filled her with so much proudness.
They continued talking about the songs Evie had picked before and changed the order back and forth. It felt natural to talk to Taylor. It felt professional; Two artists discussing music and working towards a successful tour. But at the same time it felt comforting as Taylor seemed like a helpful friend even though they only knew each other for some hours. Evie was still nervous when she thought about actually stepping on the stage in these huge stadiums but she knew that she shouldn’t have to feel nervous to be around Taylor. As much as Evie was a newcomer artist who was also just a normal person with hopes and fears, Taylor was one as well.
One hour into it, Taylor received a call. “Hi…No I know…yeah…I’ll be there at 7…See you, bye!”. It was a short call and Evie only heard the hum of a low voice talking to Taylor. After she hung up she told Evie that she had to leave now as she had things to do in the evening. Evie was more than grateful for previous discussion on the set and was eager to work on Taylors tips. After Taylor made one more call to her driver, they both took the elevator and reached the huge lobby again where Steve was still working his shift. Taylors driver was already waiting for her at the entrance as if he had never left the location after dropping her off for work. “It was nice meeting you and thank you so much for your tips.”, Evie started while they both stood there in front of the glass doors that led to the busy streets of New York City. “Thank you for coming! I was enchanted to meet you and always love to discuss music with fellow colleagues!”. They exchanged another short hug and Taylor jumped into the black Range Rover car that parked in front of the building while Evie made her way to her apartment.Â
“Colleagues”. Now that Evie grew more known to the public she was not a nobody anymore but never in her life had she been called a “colleague” by another musician who was way more known than her. There’s no denial that there is a hierarchy in the music industry and Taylor knows that herself. But the fact that Taylor met her at eye level told Evie a lot about her character. One she would soon enough get to know better and better.Â
