“Brothers?” I repeated, stunned if not at all amused. If this was their way of joking around it sure as hell wasn’t funny.

“Are you two even remotely serious?” Allen asked, chuckling a bit in disbelief.

“I’m afraid so.” Mom answered.

My mouth dropped open, “Mama…you a hoe?” I was sweating inside and out. My mother, the classiest person in the world…slept with someone else??

“No Evan, I didn’t.” she answered back. Relaxing, a breathed out sharply and stopped fidgeting as much.

“I did.”

Allen gasped at his mom. She couldn’t have…could she? She looked so regal and beautiful, it seemed impossible for someone of her stature to do such a thing.

“Mom?” Allen whispered. His eyes were filled with a bright confusion. Mystified and bewildered but most of all…scared.

“Yes Allen, I did have an affair with Evan’s father. Me and your farther fell on hard times and we split. In those six months I got pregnant with you. I told you’re farther and we agreed to keep you as his.”

He let out a shaky breath, “I’ve had about enough of this…” he said and spun around. Mrs. Halliwell leaped forward to stop him but he ripped away from her.

“All-”

“No!” he shouted in rebellion. One that I could understand. The agony on his face should give me satisfaction but it didn’t. “I’m going to the car.”

She quickly exited and ran after him, leaving me and mom in the middle of the room. A few harden seconds passed. “So…what’s next, I’m black too? Cause’ that would explain my tight ass, or maybe I’m Asian since I’m in love with K-Pop music or maybe I’m the freaking Queen of England because I like tea!”

“Evan.”

“When were you planning to tell me that I have a brother?”

She sighed. “I was hoping you’d never have to find out…”

“Mom, do you know how much me and that kid hate each other? We’re always at each other’s throats. All of this could have been damn avoided if we knew we were related!”

“That’s it! Drop your tone young man.” She commanded. That I did, even in my partially blind fury I still knew when to step back. “I wasn’t the one who cheated, your father was.”

I croaked. “I’m going to bed. If I’m related to Beyoncé you can tell me in the morning…” I whispered with a cheeky tone and strutted up the stairway to my ever forging bed where I drifted off to bed with so much in my mind. But one was clear, dad…

The Next Day…

“No freakin way.” Chris said as the three of my closest friends eyes bulged out of their heads.

Kim raised her hand, “So, let me get this right…you and Allen are related?”

“And not just related…brothers?” Bobby finished.

I sighed and nodded my head. “Damn, well at least Mrs. Crawford cleared your name for the drugs thingy…though they still haven’t caught the person who did do it…” Chris blurted.

“Yeah, it sucks but I guess we’re going to have to be nice to one another now.”

“Doubt it…” Kimmy said as I steamed Allen came rushing our way.

Our eyes immediately connected and he rushed over to me. “Allen look-”

He raised his hand quickly to stop me. “Listen Evan, I don’t know where this is going to lead or even if this is true but you better know one thing.” He stepped closer, “Someone as great as myself and slutty and uninteresting as you will never ever be brothers.”

I clenched my jaw as he turned and walked away. “Well,” Chris said, putting his arm around my neck, “so much for being nice to one another.”

“Yeah, but what I don’t understand is why the kid hates me so much.”

It was baffling to me and most of everyone around me why Allen hated me so much. I didn’t understand it one bit.

“Maybe he’s intimidated by you.”

I scoffed “No way, he’s way too cocky…it’s something else definitely.”

“Well we don’t have time to contemplate why his period is always on, we have a test for Math and I for one plan not to fail.” Bobby voiced and grabbed his books.

“Yeah well, I’m going to fail anyway…” Chris said ushering behind him.

“We’ll see you later Evan. Get better honey.” She coos and squeezes my hand. I squeeze hers back before she lets go and disappear down the hall, trailing after Bobby and Chris.

I grabbed my back off the floor and started to make my way to first period. But through the lackluster silence, I heard a voice reciting something.

I poked my head into a nearby door, gasping when I saw Alex and Jacob. They looked rather happy together. It’s strange, boys, even when they are supposed to be fighting still have this astonishing attribute of gravitating back towards each other; traits females seem to lack present day.

“Dude, are you really going to recite that to him?” Alex laughed from the vacant teacher’s desk.

Jacob looked in between pissed and embarrassed. “He’s going to love it. This is classic and Evan is a hopeless romantic.”

Me? Are they…sharing ideas over how to win me? Should I be upset? Enraged, that they treat this as if it’s a game…as if my heart is a plain field and they’re trying to get the most points to win? Or should I be flattered that two of the best looking, charismatic and suave young men in this school are adamant and hell bent on swooning me.

“Okay, Okay but don’t get angry if he turns you down.” Alex said with a smirk. It’s as if he was the same jerky guy that I met back at the party.

“As if you’re any better…” Jacob mumbled with his head down.

“Way better.”

“please.” Jacob scoffed from a chair in the room. Alex chuckled and winked.

“I’m telling you he’d fall for this bait, hook and sinker.”

I giggled and pushed the door open, “I’d be the judge of that.”

Alex was the first to see me and bounced off of the teacher’s desk and fumbled to a straightened standing positioned. Jacob was a lot cooler about it and simply got up from the table.

“H-how much of that did you hear?” Alex asked, stumbling over his words.

I slightly raised my head in amusement at their overly shocked, humorously animated faces. “Enough to know Jacob thinks that I’m a hopeless romantic and you think I’m fish.” I answered, referencing to Alex’s last boastful remarks before I entered.  They both chuckled nervously and shared looks with one another.

“We…didn’t really think that these would win you over Evan.” Jacob said, pushing the paper into his pocket.

“Yea, we were just clowning around really.”

I nodded, “I beg to differ, and I’d like to hear them.”

“W-what?” they both said in harmonic unison that would make the The Chordette Sisters envious.

“I didn’t stutter boys, now come one,” I moved in and shut the door behind me and leaped up on the teacher’s desk, “let’s see what you have.”

They both looked at each other with strained uneasiness. “What, you don’t know whose going first?” I asked, swinging my legs freely. Alex swallowed harshly and nodded. “Okay, I’ll choose. Eenie, Meenie, Minnie, Alex.” I said abruptly causing him to jump a little.

He started fumbling over his words again inviting me to raise a intimidating eyebrow.

“Well, here goes.

Evan, you are fantastic,

You’re beautiful and absolutely amazing and even though I screwed up,

Screwed up what we could have had…I was hoping that you’d find it somewhere in that heart to forgive me.”

There was a brief silenced. I looked up from my finger nails that I’d been picking at while he spoke, “Oh, you’re done? Well Alex, let me explain something to you. It me a long time to forgive Danny after he cheated on me…I’m not going to be labeled a hypocrite for getting back with you or stupid for getting cheated on again. So try again.”

Jacob laughed a bit, nudging the moping boy and stepping forward. Clearing his throat he got right up to me and looked me deep in the eyes, placing his hands on either side of me.

“Evan, despite how we met, despite what’s going on between us now. I want you to know that I really like you. It might not be love yet, but if you give me the chance to prove how much I care it will flourish there. You’re more than just good looking, more than just sarcastic or smart or sweet…you’re unique and I’d love nothing than having you by my side always, forever and for always to prove that to you that I’m will always be the one and I’d never leave you lonely.”

Once he finished a placed a gentle hand on his cheek, “oh Jacob…” I whispered looking deeply into his eyes, “that was, the most generic, arrogant and cliché thing you’ve said thus far. God, the icky love story goo was practically dripping from that crap. Hint, the next time you try and profess your…like of someone try not using random titles of Shania Twain songs in it, it’s highly unoriginal and slightly disturbing.” I roughly snatched my hand away from his face, bent on leaving a mark with my nails. Jumping off the table I grabbed my bag and strutted towards the door.

“I have been making it too easy for you assholes. So, from now on I’m playing it like the stuck up bitch from the high school movies. Come correct or don’t come at all. By the way, both of your colognes smell like someone literally shoved their hand up a skunk’s ass and smeared all over you, just some friendly advice.” With that a slammed the door close behind me and walked to the remainder of first period.

The entire day I caught both boys trying to look over at me. Hiding in class rooms, failing to hide behind people, in trash cans…it was becoming entertaining if not slightly unsanitary.

But that was at the backburner of my mind every time I glanced at Allen. We were…brothers. Blood related. Just thinking off it made me not only chuckle with abhorrence but cringe with repulsion. But every time I thought of it that repulse and disdain wasn’t for him.

“Evan, we’re going to be chilling by the beach. You coming bro?”

I shook my head and headed for the bus top down the road, “I’ll catch up Chris. I have to do something.” He nodded and I stepped on the bus.

An hour later I was at the one place I didn’t want to be, but I was desperate for answers. Walking through the cloud of sickness and viruses was nothing compared to the disease of lies that I have been told so many times. And what’s sick is the fact the biggest came not from a boy that I shouldn’t of trusted by the one man I should have been able to depend on.

I opened the door and stepped inside with vindictive intent.

“Dad…” I whispered at his barely there life form lying ever so gracefully on the bed. I called him again as of expecting some reply.

“Do you hear me; you’ve got some damn nerve father dear.” Pacing back and forth, in a raging fit, my heart will not settle. I can practically feel its rhythmic pulsating pounding from the inside of my chest-beating away like a drum. “You tell me that I must be a man when you haven’t even stepped up to be a man for your son all these years! Are you my dad?!”

“I’ve had just about enough of the lies, the deceit and the pain- God I could have my own damn soap opera. So Alex, Allen, Jacob and you can kiss my ass.” I crept closer, if only he can hear what a tirade I’m on. Not sure if it’s a blessing or a burden. “You better be happy you have two sons…because you just lost one. Rot.”

I sucked in a deep breath and take a few steps back-slowly coming back to reality from the rage that blinded me. The constant beeping of the heart monitor is getting very irritating and the mangled man- barely alive on the bed is a getting too much for me to stand. “I’m done. When you’re ready to answer me…get up.”

I walked out the room still furious but it all faded when my eyes connected with someone who I thought I’d never see again. “K, what are you doing here?” he spun around in his leather jacket and perfectly positioned hair and smiled a little.

He turned around and smiled a little, “Oh hey little dude. I’m here to see my mom.” My face hardened from regretting asking. He chuckled, “no, she’s five months pregnant.”

I breathed out, “Oh.” I smiled.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, patting a little girl on the head next to him. She was the spitting image of him really, minus the blonde hair color; amazingly stunning and practically oozing incorruptibility.

“That’s…a long story” I answered and walked over to him, sitting in the seat next to another boy. He was blonde too and looked rather familiar.

“Oh, this is my little sister and little bro…Matt; he goes to your school.”

“Oh. Hi.” Hi smiled. He nodded in response, keeping his eyes away from mines.

“I’ll be right back; I’m going on check on mom.” K said and stepped inside the room opposite Dad’s.

At first Matt was silent but then he poked my knee to get my attention, “Don’t you hang with Allen?”

There’s the overstatement of the year “I wouldn’t say we hang together, he’s not someone I’d invite to my wedding.”

“Why?”

I scoffed, “He’s probably rip it to shreds, slap the flower girl and throw Holy Water all over the crowd.” I chuckled.

“He’s not that bad.” He laughed.

I returned the action. “Really, how would you know?”

“We have…history together.” He answered hesitantly.

My eyebrow rose, “What kind of history?”

His faced lit up a bright pink color and he bit his lip.

‘Oh…” I answered. A sly smile crept on my face. Allen has always berated me about being promiscuous and he always ended to one up me but now I can get him back. “Tell me what happened.”

He fidgeted and coked his head at my sudden and questionable enthusiasm, “I thought you said you weren’t friends?”

“Nonsense, he’s swell and lovely to be around, in fact,” I stopped and smiled as sweetly as possible. “…….we’re brothers.”
