Luo Jinxiao wiped the water from her face, a wave of unease washing over her. She also felt a complex mix of emotions.
The earlier situation was so strange; where had that power come from? She glanced down at her hands.
Not only was it power, but why did her mind feel so altered? While she could remember everything and was well aware of her actions, the manner in which she acted was entirely different from before.
Now that she had returned to normal, everything felt even stranger.
Lost in thought, her gaze shifted back to Qu Weiyin. She sighed, lamenting a missed opportunity; it seemed she hadn’t managed to kiss her after all.
Nearby, Qiongqi let out a small grunt, and Luo Jinxiao hurried over to check on him. She reached out to rub his round little belly, feeling relieved when she realized he was all right—just exhausted from being forced back into his smaller form.
Luo Jinxiao summoned her spiritual energy to heal him and, once finished, tucked him back into her bag.
Meanwhile, Yan Ying finally managed to coax Luo Ning into drinking some spring water. Luo Ning wobbled to her feet, retrieving the scroll from her sleeve and tossing it to Luo Jinxiao.
“Here, this is what you all risked your lives to retrieve. I opened it earlier, but there’s nothing inside,†Yan Ying said, rolling her eyes. The gesture was quite evident on her darkened face.
Luo Jinxiao caught the scroll steadily, holding it for a moment before responding with a thank you.
Under the daylight, the full extent of Yan Ying’s plight became clear. Her clothes were tattered, and her face was blackened, making her look like she had just emerged from a soot-filled furnace, standing next to her peacock.
Noticing Luo Jinxiao’s gaze, Yan Ying instinctively wrapped herself more with a ragged piece of cloth.
“Go ahead and laugh if you want! I’m homeless now anyway; I might as well return to Changming Tower and turn to essence to nourish the heavens and earth,†Yan Ying grumbled angrily.
“You’re going back?†Luo Ning exclaimed, using the ground for support as she stood, her petite figure wobbling. Luo Jinxiao quickly rushed over to steady her.
“If you go back, if I ever see you again, may the heavens strike me down!†Luo Ning declared, biting her lip as her beautiful eyes widened in concern.
Yan Ying’s face crinkled in dismay, her brows furrowing as she hesitated to lift her head.
“All right, you’ve guarded for five years; that counts as atonement. Moreover, with Changming Tower no longer a safe place to stay, why not return to Wuhui Sect first and let the Elders decide?†Luo Jinxiao suggested, feeling a pang of compassion.
“I think that sounds good.†Yan Ying quickly changed her attitude, picking up the black-feathered chicken and placing it on her shoulder, unable to contain the smile creeping onto her face, her pearly white teeth shining brightly.
Luo Jinxiao watched, feeling a twinge of sadness.
After all, she was the daughter of a prestigious cultivation family, someone who had once been held in high regard, yet because of the ignorance of the previous generation, she had fallen into the mud.
Fortunately, she seemed to have enough spirit and vitality, not appearing overly fragile.
Luo Jinxiao walked back to Qu Weiyin, holding out the scroll for her to see.
Qu Weiyin gingerly took the scroll, opening it with a slight tremor. There were indeed no words inscribed, but she nodded, saying, “This is definitely it. You should take this back and present it to the Sect Master.â€
“What is this thing?†Lu Fanzhi asked in surprise.
Qu Weiyin cleared her throat softly, her fragile form bending slightly. Seeing this, Luo Jinxiao felt a pang in her heart and quickly knelt down to allow her to lean on her shoulder.
After a moment’s pause, Qu Weiyin continued, “This is known as the Panorama of Mountains and Rivers. In ancient times, it was regarded as one of the two major evil arts alongside the diagram of the underworld.â€
“Later, those who practiced these arts either suffered backlash from the heavens and perished or were exterminated by others. People realized the dangers it posed, so the celestial sects sent individuals to destroy them. What they called destruction was, in reality, mere concealment.â€
Luo Jinxiao listened intently. “Does the Panorama of Mountains and Rivers also require killing to cultivate?â€
“It doesn’t require it, but it will destroy the practitioner’s mind, driving them to cruelty and slaughter. Not everyone can practice it; one must have the right circumstances to do so.â€
“Cruelty and slaughter? Isn’t that very much akin to succumbing to madness? So it’s not much different from the diagram of the underworld,†Lu Fanzhi interjected.
Qu Weiyin’s eyes dimmed as she gave a slight nod in agreement.
Luo Jinxiao gazed at the scroll, a wave of concern rising within her. If the Sect Master wanted this, what were they planning? Did they intend to contend with the demon race?
She hoped it wouldn’t turn out to be the case.
“Hey, when are we setting off? I want to change into a clean outfit,†Yan Ying shouted, her voice echoing.
“Let’s leave now. The sooner we get back to Wuhui Sect, the better to avoid any unnecessary trouble,†Luo Jinxiao responded. Softening her tone, she looked towards Qu Weiyin. “Is that alright, Master Uncle?â€
Qu Weiyin was briefly taken aback by the question, her heart fluttering, and she nodded uncomfortably.
She attempted to rise, but suddenly a wave of the metallic tang of blood rushed to her throat, and she doubled over, coughing again. Noticing this, Luo Jinxiao hurriedly circulated her energy to heal her.
It was rare for Qu Weiyin to appear this weak. Normally, no matter how exhausted she was, she would mask her condition, but today she seemed gravely injured, lacking the strength to maintain her usual composure.
Luo Jinxiao placed a hand on her shoulder, feeling Qu Weiyin’s body was extremely hot, likely due to internal injuries.
“It’s alright; this place isn’t safe. We should return to Wuhui Sect first,†Qu Weiyin said, gripping Luo Jinxiao’s wrist to help herself up.
However, after only a couple of steps, she nearly stumbled. Fortunately, Luo Jinxiao rushed forward and caught her shoulder.
“Master Uncle, don’t try to force it. I’ll carry you,†Luo Jinxiao said, unable to bear watching her struggle like this.
“No need,†Qu Weiyin shook her head, stubbornly trying to walk on her own. Luo Jinxiao didn’t know how to proceed, so she decided to take a bold step and turned to squat down.
Her skirt spread out on the ground, presenting her straight and upright back toward Qu Weiyin, causing her to feel a rush of embarrassment.
“With so many people watching, what kind of sight is this?†Qu Weiyin murmured, placing a hand on her chest.
Luo Jinxiao turned her head to look at her and suddenly laughed. “What’s the big deal? Is Master Uncle feeling shy?â€
Her laughter was like the warm sun of spring, bright and inviting.
“Don’t say such nonsense!†Qu Weiyin reprimanded, but her face betrayed her as it secretly flushed with color.
“Well, if Master Uncle doesn’t let me carry you, I might just have to hold you like before. Over these five years, my strength has definitely increased,†Luo Jinxiao grinned widely.
Qu Weiyin glanced at Lu Fanzhi, who was watching the exchange with amusement, and she bit her lip hard. Then, with a sigh, she bent down and climbed onto Luo Jinxiao’s back. “Just wait until I’m better; you’ll see how I can deal with you.â€
Luo Jinxiao easily stood up, glancing back with a smirk. “When you’re better, you can punish me however you like.â€
As she spoke, her breath brushed against Qu Weiyin’s face, causing her cheeks to heat up, and she turned her head aside in embarrassment.
The group then set off, riding their swords swiftly back toward Wuhui Sect, leaving Changming Tower far behind. The biting cold finally subsided, replaced by the gentle warmth of spring breezes that enveloped them.
Qu Weiyin wrapped her arms around Luo Jinxiao’s neck, secretly reflecting that this was the second time Luo Jinxiao had carried her like this. It felt as if everything had changed, yet nothing had really shifted at all.
“What happened just now, exactly?†Qu Weiyin asked.
Luo Jinxiao pondered for a moment before answering against the wind, “I’m not sure where that power came from earlier, but it felt like I heard someone whispering in my ear. It was a woman, quite elderly.â€
“And what about your own thoughts? Are they still there?†Qu Weiyin continued.
“Of course they are, but… my thoughts felt oddly foreign. My behavior was strange too, but I’m still me,†Luo Jinxiao said slowly, carefully choosing her words.
Qu Weiyin nodded slightly, fatigue overtaking her as she rested her chin on Luo Jinxiao’s shoulder.
Though her chin was small and light, it sent shivers down Luo Jinxiao’s spine.
“It’s good that it’s you,†Qu Weiyin murmured in a voice barely audible.
Luo Jinxiao smiled, and hearing Qu Weiyin say that made her heart swell with happiness, as if colorful bubbles had erupted inside her—a sweet sensation that burst one after another.
“Are you afraid?†Luo Jinxiao pressed, taking advantage of the moment.
Luo Jinxiao had expected Qu Weiyin to chastise her, but instead, Qu Weiyin hesitated for a moment before quietly admitting, “I’m afraid you’re not really you. I’m terribly afraid.â€
At those words, Luo Jinxiao felt as if her heart had been struck, a dull ache washing over her.
The journey from Changming Tower to Wuhui Sect was still quite long. They walked intermittently, flying for two days and two nights before finally reaching the territory of Wuhui Sect. The scenery beneath them gradually became familiar, sometimes passing over prosperous towns, peaceful and serene.
When they arrived, it was the middle of the night, so they didn’t want to disturb the Sect Master and the Elders. The group quietly returned to their rooms and collapsed into sleep. Luo Jinxiao, still carrying Qu Weiyin, made her way back to the Cold Cloud Pavilion on the cliff.
Inside the Cold Cloud Pavilion, everything remained unchanged, exactly like it had five years ago. As Luo Jinxiao observed this, her heart swelled with nostalgia.
Qu Weiyin had led a life that was utterly monotonous. Even the vase that held the hibiscus flowers sat in the same spot, meticulously placed, though the flowers inside had long since dried up and withered.
“You can set me down now,†Qu Weiyin said softly from behind her.
Luo Jinxiao cheerfully complied, but as she laid her down on the bed, she did so reluctantly, deliberately slowing her movements.
She attempted to help Qu Weiyin lie down, but Qu Weiyin gently brushed her hands away.
“Aren’t you tired?†Qu Weiyin asked.
“Not at all.†Although her back ached, Luo Jinxiao smiled brightly. She reached out, probing with her spiritual energy, and shook her head. “Master Uncle, why haven’t you improved after all this time? I need to speak to the Sect Master and ask her for help.â€
Just as she straightened up, her sleeve was suddenly tugged by Qu Weiyin.
“Don’t! It’s too late; let’s talk about it tomorrow,†Qu Weiyin insisted.
“No, this has been dragging on for too many days. If it isn’t treated completely, what if it leaves behind lingering issues?†Luo Jinxiao’s tone was resolute.
“I said I don’t need it,†Qu Weiyin frowned, her phoenix eyes wide open. The shimmering candlelight flickered in her trembling pupils.
“No way; you’re listening to me tonight.†Luo Jinxiao had a playful intention, but she was also genuinely worried. She began to back away.
In a moment of panic, Qu Weiyin rolled off the bed. Afraid she would fall, Luo Jinxiao abruptly halted, and the two collided. Luo Jinxiao’s lips nearly brushed against Qu Weiyin’s smooth nose.
Qu Weiyin swiftly turned her face away, her nose flushing warm. Unsure where to direct her eyes, she scolded, “Why are you being so disobedient? Do my words not hold any weight now?â€
Luo Jinxiao bit her lips, momentarily taken aback and at a loss for words.
From her vantage point, although Qu Weiyin looked pale, she was still as beautiful as a divine being—her crimson lips, pearly teeth, and enchanting phoenix eyes made her ethereal beauty rival that of a nightingale, causing envy and shame.
Realizing she’d been too forceful in her tone, Qu Weiyin worried that Luo Jinxiao was upset. She suppressed her desire to scold her. “We can wait until tomorrow. Besides, I know my own body. It’s just another injury from the demonic energy; with some rest, I’ll be fine. I’ve already troubled the Sect Master once; I don’t want to burden others.â€
Seeing Luo Jinxiao still silent, Qu Weiyin’s delicate teeth grazed her soft, rosy lips as she gently added, “Jinxiao, be good. I’m so tired.â€
In saying this, the authority and coldness she usually held were gone, replaced by a hint of reproach and tenderness.
Luo Jinxiao had never seen Qu Weiyin like this. Her head buzzed, and she nearly forgot where she was, let alone that she had intended to ask for help in treating her injuries.
