Luo Jinxiao quickly snatched the book back and cleared her throat. “I’ve been overthinking things lately, so I just wanted to take a casual look.â€
Qu Weiyin found herself at a loss for words, wanting to offer advice but unsure how to begin. In the end, she simply waved her hand, signaling Luo Jinxiao to leave.
Luo Jinxiao felt as if she had been granted a pardon, and she bolted out the door.
Qu Weiyin walked over to the window, watching Luo Jinxiao’s figure fade into the night. She let out a long sigh, her eyelids lowering slightly, her lips loosening in a faint smile.
The view outside was unchanged, as it had been for ten years. The bright moon hung high, and the night was cool and tranquil, casting the layers of clouds in hues of amber.
Peaceful and serene.
Time passed, and eventually, the light suddenly went out beneath the moonlight, leaving Qu Weiyin’s silhouette vanished from the window.
The night blossom forest was shrouded in darkness, only a few fragmented shadows swaying in the moonlight. The red fabric of her dress brushed against the petals, making a soft rustling sound.
Qu Weiyin approached the door of the bamboo house, gently tapping on the bamboo door. With a creaking sound, it opened, and a voice from inside invited her in.
The Sect Master sat at a bamboo table in the courtyard, her skirt fanned out around her. There were faint traces of blood visible from the sleeves, yet her expression was calm, as if nothing had happened.
Qu Weiyin composed herself, suppressing any emotion in her gaze as she closed the door and moved forward.
The two women, one dressed in red and the other in white, sat across from each other, and for a moment, neither spoke.
“The Sect Master called for me. What is it regarding?†Qu Weiyin was the first to break the silence.
“It’s nothing important,†the Sect Master said, shaking her head slightly. Her white hair cast dappled shadows within the flower’s glow. Even Qu Weiyin thought she looked incredibly beautiful.
“Thank you, Sect Master, for saving my life five years ago,†Qu Weiyin expressed.
“Someone willingly offered their life for yours, and I merely acted on impulse. It is nothing significant,†the Sect Master replied, shaking her head dismissively.
“Is that so? Did you use the Panorama of Mountains and Rivers?†Qu Weiyin detected an unusual aura and furrowed her brows.
The Sect Master’s smile faded, and she nodded self-deprecatingly, extending her hand to invite Qu Weiyin to touch her.
Qu Weiyin hesitantly reached out, her fingertips grazing the surface. “How could you have sustained such severe injuries?†Her phoenix eyes widened in shock.
If she remembered correctly, the Sect Master had reached the same level of cultivation as she had in her past life, having long ago attained the Greater Ascension stage. With just a bit more effort, she could achieve demigod status. Yet now, it appeared as if the celestial veins within her had withered, leaving them dry and lifeless.
“During past celestial-demon conflicts, I could hold my ground somewhat, but now in this frail body, I don’t know what to do,†the Sect Master lamented.
“Then why not cultivate the Panorama of Mountains and Rivers?†Qu Weiyin suggested, retracting her hand.
“I simply wanted to try it out, and now I’m in this state. Everyone will eventually die; even if one achieves immortality, they cannot escape aging and death,†the Sect Master replied, shaking her head lightly while managing a smile.
“The celestial realm lacks a true leader. Over the years, there have been few talented individuals who could stand alone. Meanwhile, the demon race has acquired the Diagram of the Underworld and has been growing stronger. I initially thought to die on South Dipper Peak, yet I can’t let go of this world,†the Sect Master mused.
Qu Weiyin fell into silence, her gaze fixed on the Sect Master. She felt that the Sect Master’s glass-like eyes could see right through a person’s innermost thoughts.
“I sensed it the moment you entered—the pervasive demonic energy,†the Sect Master continued.
Qu Weiyin’s eyes darted away, a hint of unease evident in her demeanor.
“Don’t be afraid. I understand that someone who can earn Luo Jinxiao’s genuine affection is not truly a demon,” the Sect Master reassured her.
“Besides you and Luo Jinxiao, no one else knows of the Panorama’s existence. She is far from as powerful as you are. That’s why I’m asking for your help in cultivating,†the Sect Master said calmly.
From her sleeve, she pulled out a scroll and placed it in front of herself. With a wave of her hand, the scroll unfurled on its own, revealing that the previously blank surface was now filled with a magnificent tapestry of landscapes.
Another moment of silence passed between them, and after a long while, Qu Weiyin suddenly reached out and pressed her hand down on the scroll.
“Give it to me,†Qu Weiyin said firmly.
In the silent exchange between two intelligent individuals, no words were necessary. Their gazes locked as the Sect Master released her grip.
“Take care,†the Sect Master said softly.
“This is my fate,†Qu Weiyin stated calmly. “As you know, cultivating with demonic energy can yield double the results with half the effort.â€
As the door creaked open, Qu Weiyin turned back, her gaze landing on a crystal-clear ice figure on the table. She stared at it for a moment before suddenly speaking, “If I am no longer here, please take care of Jinxiao.â€
With that, she waved her sleeve and departed.
The Sect Master clutched her chest, fresh blood trickling from the corner of her mouth, dripping steadily onto her white clothing, seeping through to the fabric underneath.
An elderly woman hurried over to help wipe the blood from her mouth, her face stricken with worry. “Sect Master, why do you involve yourself in all this again?â€
“Those who are deeply emotional can achieve great things, but it is also what complicates matters. This is her fate, as well as mine,†the Sect Master replied.
A few days later, Wuhui Sect became lively once again as people from various factions arrived one after another, each bearing gifts of congratulations and creating an atmosphere of harmony.
Luo Jinxiao stood under the great white jade sign of Wuhui Sect, dressed in welcoming attire, nodding her head rhythmically while maintaining a constant, bright smile on her face.
Across from her, Lu Fanzhi was beaming, greeting everyone as they entered and guiding them inside for accommodation.
“Luo Little Celestial Friend!†someone called out from afar. Luo Jinxiao looked up and waved.
Chi Yi, still clad in her training outfit, approached briskly with the disciples from Qingyan Palace, a sword slung across her back, exuding a spirited and gallant aura.
“Why are you here to greet people?†Chi Yi asked, smiling at her.
“Isn’t it because of my troublesome master? My smile is practically frozen in place at this point,†Luo Jinxiao replied, her eyes squinting as she maintained her smile, appearing quite comical.
“You’ve worked hard all the way here; you should go inside now.†As she spoke, Luo Jinxiao patted Chi Yi’s shoulder.
“Is it true that the Sect Master of Wuhui Sect is still alive? I remember first seeing her when I was a child. I was so impressed by her formidable presence,†Chi Yi remarked.
“Of course,†Luo Jinxiao said, her tone tinged with pride.
After seeing off Chi Yi, most of the sects had gathered. The last to arrive was Bai Yue Sect, and from a distance, Luo Jinxiao spotted Tang Lan’er, her head adorned with dazzling jewels.
Before she had a chance to hide, Tang Lan’er dashed a few steps forward, appearing right in front of her and grabbing her hand.
“Luo Jinxiao, what are you hiding from?†Tang Lan’er pouted.
“I’m not hiding,†Luo Jinxiao replied, stroking her chin as she offered her hand politely. “Young Sect Master, Sect Master, please.â€
“Tang Lan’er often mentions you. It has been years since we last met, and you’ve grown quite a bit,†the Sect Master of Bai Yue Sect said, stroking his beard with a satisfied expression.
Luo Jinxiao felt slightly choked under his gaze, responding only with a smile.
“Bai Yue Sect is remote, and Lan’er has been wanting to explore more. How about this: when you have time, take her down the mountain for a little tour. Is that alright?†the Bai Yue Sect Master declared grandly, patting Luo Jinxiao on the shoulder as he strode away confidently.
Before Luo Jinxiao could reject the offer, Tang Lan’er firmly grabbed her arm and said with a bright smile, “See! My dad said it. Just take me out for a bit.â€
“I’m busy,†Luo Jinxiao attempted to pull her arm away and turned to leave.
“Oh come on! I’m stuck at Bai Yue Sect all day with nowhere to go. Just take me down for a little while!†Tang Lan’er pleaded fervently, tugging desperately at Luo Jinxiao’s arm, refusing to let go.
Eventually, Luo Jinxiao found herself unable to resist and was dragged down the mountain by Tang Lan’er.
As their figures gradually disappeared, Lu Fanzhi stood there fuming, hands on her hips as she continued to greet guests.
A red figure appeared behind her and asked, “Where’s Luo Jinxiao?â€
Startled, Lu Fanzhi turned around and, clutching her chest with relief, exclaimed, “Master Uncle Qu! You scared me! Luo Jinxiao is so ungrateful—now that someone has her back, she left me here to do all the work while she’s off playing with that young lady!â€
“Which young lady?†Qu Weiyin frowned, her brows furrowing slightly.
“That one from Bai Yue Sect, what’s her name—Lan’er? She looks so spoiled and arrogant; ugh!” Lu Fanzhi huffed indignantly.
Upon hearing this, Qu Weiyin’s eyes lowered, and she muttered an acknowledgment.
Her expression seemed a bit lonely, but she quickly regained her composure and turned to leave.
“Master Uncle Qu! If you have any messages, I can help convey them!†Lu Fanzhi called after her.
Qu Weiyin paused her steps and shook her head. “It’s nothing; just let her enjoy herself. She needs a break.â€
If Luo Jinxiao could have someone else to accompany her, that would be a good thing.
Yet despite thinking this, Qu Weiyin felt a persistent ache in her heart.
Meanwhile, Luo Jinxiao spent an hour and a half shopping around Wuzhong City with Tang Lan’er, carrying so many items that she could barely hold them all. Finally, she had no choice but to summon Qiongqi, piling everything onto him in one go.
“Thanks, little sweetheart!†Luo Jinxiao waved at her.
Qiongqi looked utterly bewildered, wearing a pot on his head, draped in fabric, and grasping gold and silver jewelry, following behind them.
After exploring every corner of Wuzhong City, Tang Lan’er was finally satisfied and headed back, not forgetting to buy Qiongqi a large bag of marinated beef.
When the two of them returned to Wuhui Sect, it was just in time for the meal. Several large tables had been set up on the white jade platform, with disciples and guests from various sects seated around them. Even those who practiced fasting could sip on some wine.
“I’ve never seen such a lively and joyous scene before!†Tang Lan’er grinned widely from a distance, then tugged at Luo Jinxiao’s sleeve.
Luo Jinxiao was just astonished. Generally speaking, it was rare to witness such a warm and cheerful gathering that disregarded rankings. Truly, the Sect Master was impressive. She suddenly remembered the story of the Sect Master building an ice house for Zhao Zhao to dine in, and a smile crept onto her face.
“What are you laughing at? I haven’t even fasted yet; I’m starving! Let’s hurry!†Tang Lan’er pulled her along, striding towards the white jade platform.
Luo Jinxiao had originally intended to find a secluded spot to sit down, but to her dismay, she discovered that the table across from her was surrounded by a group of Elders, with the Sect Master of Bai Yue Sect waving her over.
Reluctantly, she steeled herself and walked over, standing obediently at the edge of the table.
“Come, come, sit! Can this girl drink wine?†the Bai Yue Sect Master seemed particularly fond of her. He pulled her down beside Tang Lan’er and filled her cup to the brim.
“Please, esteemed elder…†Luo Jinxiao hurriedly objected, “I can serve myself.â€
As she looked up, she caught Qu Weiyin’s gaze from across the table. Just as she was about to greet her, Qu Weiyin averted her eyes, focusing on her own wine cup instead.
Luo Jinxiao’s smile froze on her face.
The atmosphere at the table was indeed jovial, as several Elders drank merrily, and with the Sect Master absent, it appeared only Qu Weiyin sat stiffly in her chair, immobile and seemingly disconnected from the surrounding merriment.
Meanwhile, at the table filled with disciples nearby, they had already begun to play a drinking game.
Luo Jinxiao’s expression grew colder, and her usually cheerful eyes lost their sparkle.
“What are you thinking about, Luo Jinxiao?†Tang Lan’er asked, offering her a piece of meat. “I can’t drink, and this wine was personally brewed by my dad, so you should really refrain from drinking.â€
As she reached out to pour the wine out for Luo Jinxiao, Luo Jinxiao gently pressed her hand down and shook her head.
“It’s fine. I have a very strong tolerance; I won’t get drunk.â€
Qu Weiyin, sitting across from them, caught the glimpse of their conversation out of the corner of her eye and felt an uncomfortable pang in her heart. She downed a cup of tea before tightly gripping her hands.
She deserved a better life; she should be happy.
Luo Jinxiao’s gaze was fiery, but she could not elicit even a moment of response from Qu Weiyin. A feeling of agitation built up in her chest, and she couldn’t quite capture what emotion it was.
Her mind became increasingly muddled, and in frustration, she poured the clear liquid from her cup down her throat.
Someone nearby promptly refilled her glass, and one drink turned into another as she continued to down the alcohol.
“Luo Jinxiao, put down the wine cup!†Elder Liu, sitting a few spaces away, saw her lack of restraint and admonished her sternly.
“Oh come on, let the girl have some fun! This wine is well-brewed; she likes it!†the Bai Yue Sect Master chimed in merrily.
Elder Liu turned his attention away, murmuring to Elder He beside him, “This wine is the worst I’ve had in my few hundred years of life.â€
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t catch much of their conversation and felt increasingly confused. She looked into her wine cup, realizing she felt on the brink of drunkenness. But she distinctly remembered being able to drink endlessly without getting drunk back at Luyang Prefecture.
After pondering for some time, anger surged up within her, and she slammed her hand down on the table. “Scoundrels! I’ve been cheated!”
The wine surely must have been watered down!
Noticing her strange demeanor across the table, Qu Weiyin’s hand moved slightly as she casually siphoned the last half cup of wine from Luo Jinxiao’s glass. It took a few moments for Luo Jinxiao to finally lift the glass, and she murmured, “It’s gone.â€
The Sect Master, wanting to refill her glass again, suddenly dropped his wine jug, which shattered with a crash and splattered wine all over him.
“What happened here?†the Bai Yue Sect Master looked down, perplexed, at the fragments of the broken jug in his hands.
Qu Weiyin sighed inwardly.
“I’m sorry, esteemed Elders and Sect Master, but I’m not feeling well and will take my leave now,†Qu Weiyin murmured, preparing to stand.
Just as she did, a bright voice rang out from across the table. “Master Uncle, you sit down! Today, you’re not allowed to leave!â€
Everyone’s attention turned toward Luo Jinxiao, who was pointing her finger at Qu Weiyin, her eyes glassy and her body swaying unsteadily.
Tang Lan’er quickly reached out to support her. “What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you have a good tolerance for alcohol?â€
Qu Weiyin paused for a moment, and to everyone’s surprise, she obediently sat back down without losing her temper.
“Why don’t we learn from the disciples and play a drinking game?†Elder He suggested, sensing the atmosphere at the table was off.
Everyone agreed, and soon they began a poetry relay. Those who couldn’t come up with a line in time had to take a drink.
After a few rounds, it came around to the already quite tipsy Luo Jinxiao. As Tang Lan’er said, “The magpie fills the river; the fairy waves are shallow,†Luo Jinxiao suddenly stood up, confidently proclaiming, “I like my Master Uncle!â€
At once, there was dead silence at the table.
After a moment, Elder Liu began to cough violently, covering his mouth, and only after a prolonged fit could he sternly say, “Luo Jinxiao, come back here!â€
Qu Weiyin closed her eyes, her delicate fingers pressed against her forehead.
Surprisingly, she didn’t feel anger or surprise; instead, she was gripped by a soft ache and heartache.
The disciples at the other tables also perked up, eager to listen.
“I’m not going back!†Luo Jinxiao swayed as she pointed unsteadily at Elder Liu, “Old black-faced man!â€
Infuriated, Elder Liu jumped up and raised his vine rod, ready to strike Luo Jinxiao. Qu Weiyin could no longer hold back; she stood up and, in the blink of an eye, had moved in front of Luo Jinxiao. With one hand, she grasped Luo Jinxiao’s arm, and with the other, she gently turned her face to intercept Elder Liu’s wrath.
“Why are you this drunk? Behave yourself and come back with me,†Qu Weiyin urged softly.
Luo Jinxiao struggled to keep her eyes open, and she saw a blurry figure that looked very much like Qu Weiyin. Suddenly, she grabbed Qu Weiyin’s arm, preventing her from moving.
“Master Uncle… why won’t you talk to me…†she murmured, then unexpectedly leaned down, decisively planting a kiss on Qu Weiyin’s soft, fragrant lips.
Qu Weiyin’s eyes widened in shock, unable to react in time.
The table fell utterly silent, and everyone exchanged incredulous glances, not daring to speak.
Only Elder Liu pounded his fist against his own head, lamenting, “The sect is doomed, truly doomed!â€
