“I didn’t; I didn’t do anything. I swear.†Luo Jinxiao speculated that Qu Weiyin must have misunderstood something. She quickly raised her hand, feeling the knot in her own heart twist painfully as she saw Qu Weiyin’s deep sorrow.
“Do you think I’m incredibly dull, keeping all my thoughts hidden and never speaking about them? I deserve this, *Luo Jinxiao*,†Qu Weiyin choked up. She lifted the wide sleeves of her robe to wipe away her tears. “Why did you have to come into my life? Everything would’ve been so much better if things stayed the same.â€
“The first time I died, I felt hatred toward everything. I wished to leave bodies scattered everywhere, wanting to slaughter all living beings, transforming into a true demon from that day on.â€
“But the second time I died, all I wanted was to end it all. I didn’t want to see the mountains and rivers here ever again.â€
“But you made me stay,†Qu Weiyin said softly.
Luo Jinxiao felt her own eyes well up with tears, standing still in place.
“I really don’t know what to do…†Qu Weiyin’s voice grew lighter, as if it could be carried away by the wind at any moment. Suddenly, she faltered forward, and the sword in her hand clattered to the ground.
Instinctively, Luo Jinxiao stepped forward and opened her arms. Qu Weiyin collapsed into her embrace, her cheek pressing against Luo Jinxiao’s shoulder, the last drop of heated tears flowing down Luo Jinxiao’s neck and soaking into her clothes.
“Why is there so much demonic energy on you?†Luo Jinxiao asked in a hoarse voice, sniffing back her own tears. She turned her body and hoisted Qu Weiyin onto her back.
“Don’t let me see the Sect Master; I might want to kill her,†Qu Weiyin suddenly said. “Take me back.â€
Luo Jinxiao didn’t dare to refuse. She quickened her pace, her body promptly vanishing.
The night wind swept through the entrance hall as Luo Jinxiao charged in with Qu Weiyin on her back, colliding right into Lu Fanzhi and the others who were waiting there. They stared at each other in shock, dumbfounded by the scene before them.
“Did you find Master Uncle Qu?†Lu Fanzhi asked as her eyes followed Luo Jinxiao around the screen.
“Yes,†Luo Jinxiao replied succinctly, moving into the inner room.
At that moment, Luo Ning waved to Lu Fanzhi, and the group stealthily slipped out of the door.
Luo Jinxiao, now too anxious to care about anyone else, gently laid Qu Weiyin down on the bed. Pressing her hand to Qu Weiyin’s forehead, she exclaimed, “Why is it so hot? I…â€
“It’s nothing; if I die, you can just be with someone else and follow your heart’s desire,†Qu Weiyin said, struggling to prop herself up against the bed’s edge, gazing at Luo Jinxiao with a faint smile on her delicate features.
“What are you talking about? If you die, what am I supposed to do?†Luo Jinxiao snapped, her voice rising with frustration.
“Lie down.†Luo Jinxiao commanded.
Qu Weiyin didn’t comply. Instead, she examined Luo Jinxiao closely, then suddenly leaned forward, reducing the space between them. Luo Jinxiao could see each of her beautifully curled eyelashes.
“Do you want to join me, before I completely lose myself to darkness?†she whispered, her voice turning seductive, yet her eyes still reflected deep pain.
Looking into her eyes, which seemed to glow red with emotion, Luo Jinxiao felt her heart race and her mind swirl.
She gasped, taken aback, and managed to ask, “What?â€
“Dual cultivation,†Qu Weiyin answered, her words shocking Luo Jinxiao so much that she nearly fell off the bed.
Covering her chest with her hand in shock, she began to process this information, and steeling herself, she asked, “Do you think I’ve been doing dual cultivation with someone else?â€
The sudden change in Qu Weiyin’s expression made Luo Jinxiao realize she hadn’t guessed wrong, and her mind exploded with confusion.
“How could I ever do dual cultivation with someone else? What kind of logic is that regarding you and me?†She felt on the verge of tears, regretting that she had just agonized over where she had gone wrong earlier.
It was utterly absurd.
“I don’t care where you heard it from, but I, Luo Jinxiao, would never engage in such scandalous acts,†she stated firmly, every word weighed with conviction.
“Really?†Qu Weiyin’s eyes shifted away, suddenly evasive.
“Absolutely, and with my Master Uncle around, even if I wanted to do dual cultivation, I wouldn’t find anyone else…†Luo Jinxiao muttered, her confidence shaking.
Hearing this, Qu Weiyin instinctively bit her lip and moved away from Luo Jinxiao, meeting her gaze. “Then why did Qiongqi say you were with the Sect Master…â€
“Qiongqi?†Luo Jinxiao was too enraged to respond coherently. She stood up, ready to confront Qu Weiyin, but was pulled back by her grasp on the sleeve.
Turning around, she shouted, “You believe her? That creature can barely form a sentence longer than two words! She only picks the words she feels like using; it’s a stroke of luck if you can understand anything! You really believe what she said and let it get to you like this?â€
“I went to the Sect Master asking for guidance on my cultivation. I accidentally mentioned ‘dual cultivation’; Qiongqi must have overheard,†Qu Weiyin explained, realizing how she had mishandled the situation.
It dawned on her just how mistaken her assumptions were. Suddenly, she clenched her fists, furrowing her brow and turning her face away.
Here she was—formed as a dignified demon lord, yet feeling utterly ridiculous.
The pain she had felt moments ago was genuine, and now the embarrassment matched it.
Luo Jinxiao sighed, but simultaneously, joy began to overpower her anger and heartache, filling her mind.
If Qu Weiyin thought that she and the Sect Master did dual cultivation enough to be this upset, did it mean that deep down, she had feelings for her?
It seemed Qu Weiyin noticed the sudden happiness radiating from Luo Jinxiao, as she let her head droop onto her knees.
“Master Uncle, look at me,†Luo Jinxiao coaxed, her lips curling into a smile as she sat down.
Qu Weiyin was too embarrassed to lift her head and thus ignored Luo Jinxiao’s plea.
“Didn’t you just say that you could do that with me…â€
“Shut up.†Qu Weiyin snapped, quickly wiping her still-moist cheeks before loosening her grip on her knees.
Luo Jinxiao reached up to wipe Qu Weiyin’s tears, and after taking a deep breath, Qu Weiyin chided herself, “How humiliating.â€
Luo Jinxiao couldn’t help but laugh at Qu Weiyin’s response; she had never seen this side of her before, and it was simply too adorable.
“You care about me, don’t you?†Luo Jinxiao stated suddenly, her expression turning serious as she tilted her head slightly, letting her hair fall to obscure the candlelight, casting alternating shadows across her face.
Qu Weiyin didn’t answer right away; instead, she murmured, “You know, I’ve been given a second chance at life. I am that demon lord known for my heinous deeds, the one whom everyone despises.â€
This time it was Luo Jinxiao’s turn to fall silent.
“I’ve always wanted to ask you why you never seem surprised by certain things. Looking back now, it’s because you already knew,†Qu Weiyin continued.
“But if you know who I am, why don’t you steer clear of me?†Qu Weiyin questioned.
Luo Jinxiao fixed her eyes on Qu Weiyin’s as she lowered her gaze and started picking at her sleeve. After a moment, she quietly responded, “Because I like you. Before you, no one ever saved me time and again; no one cared about my safety like you do. I’ve never met a better person than you.â€
Qu Weiyin was taken aback; hearing those words spoken directly to her still left her heart racing.
“You’ve seen me at my worst, haven’t you?†Qu Weiyin asked again.
Luo Jinxiao nodded like a child being questioned, her eyes cast downward, but she retained her focus.
Qu Weiyin gazed at the top of Luo Jinxiao’s head, feeling as if she could look at her like this for centuries.
Suddenly, Qu Weiyin was struck by a wave of dizziness as she clutched her forehead. The faint black energy began to seep from her brow, no longer something she could suppress.
Luo Jinxiao felt anxious but didn’t know how to help. She could only stare at her, filled with concern.
“See, the demonic energy is no longer controllable. If this continues, I will inevitably tread the old path again, bloodthirsty and violent. If it weren’t for the fact that you genuinely made me so angry this time, I wouldn’t have shown even this slightest hint of vulnerability,†Qu Weiyin confessed.
Luo Jinxiao instinctively grasped her hand at those words, her heart aching for her.
“Anyway, it won’t be long. Once I leave or die, you can be with someone else, okay, Jinxiao?†Qu Weiyin said, her tone almost pleading. “This is the first time I’ve felt this way, and it’s not pleasant.â€
“You won’t die,†Luo Jinxiao asserted firmly, her vision becoming increasingly blurry. “Where would you even go? The Demon Realm isn’t off-limits for me. Wherever you go, I’ll be there looking for you.”
“That’s what I fear the most,†Qu Weiyin replied, her chest rising and falling. She closed her eyes slightly.
Yet she didn’t completely wish for that outcome.
“Don’t be afraid; I’ll always be with you,†Luo Jinxiao said softly, sighing as she caressed Qu Weiyin’s cheek, brushing away the remaining tears on her long lashes.
“I will make you trust me completely,†Luo Jinxiao whispered, smiling through her own tears as she swayed playfully in front of Qu Weiyin.
A small smile started to break through Qu Weiyin’s lips. With her pale fingers, she gently pushed Luo Jinxiao’s face away, mumbling, “You’re such a mess.â€
“But next time, don’t risk your life to save me. I want you to live well, to cultivate steadily, and one day be able to stand at the pinnacle of this world, looking down upon everything.â€
Hearing this, Luo Jinxiao felt a twinge of annoyance; she quietly grumbled to herself, thinking about how everyone seemed to take her for a fragile flower. “But if that day does come, I hope I won’t be standing there all alone.†She shook her head.
She didn’t want to end up alone at the end; she wished to live her days peacefully and steadily.
Noticing how heartbroken Qu Weiyin looked, along with her frailty, Luo Jinxiao decided to tease her. She suddenly asked, “So, how does this dual cultivation actually work when it comes to enhancing cultivation?â€
Qu Weiyin took a moment, her tone heavy as she responded slowly, “I’ve only heard people mention it. It’s faster than normal methods, but ultimately, it’s not something to be publicly displayed since it requires two people…â€
She trailed off, daring not to meet Luo Jinxiao’s gaze.
“No wonder Master Uncle gets so jealous,†Luo Jinxiao chuckled, “So what you just said, does it still count?â€
“It doesn’t count anymore,†Qu Weiyin muttered sulkily.
Luo Jinxiao pouted, thinking to herself how quickly she backpedaled.
Qu Weiyin knelt and sat for a moment, gradually feeling her strength wane. She raised her delicate hand and slowly touched Luo Jinxiao’s arm, letting it rest in the crook of her elbow.
Her skin was soft and cool to the touch.
“Hold me,†she said softly.
Luo Jinxiao was momentarily stunned, unable to respond. She was captivated by Qu Weiyin’s stunning face illuminated by the dim light, her beauty breathtaking.
“Are your ears deaf?†Qu Weiyin arched her delicate brows, a hint of reproach in her voice.
“N-no, they’re not deaf,†Luo Jinxiao stammered, straightening her body as she carefully leaned in, wrapping her arms around Qu Weiyin’s shoulders and gently pulling her into an embrace.
The happiness felt overwhelming; she was caught off guard.
Qu Weiyin immediately leaned back, resting her face against Luo Jinxiao’s neck, and wrapped her arms tightly around Luo Jinxiao’s waist, applying enough pressure as if afraid she would slip away.
“I was really about to lose control from anger earlier, nearly succumbing to murderous intent,†Qu Weiyin confessed.
“If you had run off with someone else, I might have immediately fallen into madness.â€
“I was so scared, Luo Jinxiao.â€
