Luo Jinxiao felt a pang of sweetness in her heart. She exerted all her strength to hold Qu Weiyin, softly saying, “I won’t run off with anyone else. I’ll stick with you, in this life and the next.â€
After what felt like ages, as Qu Weiyin’s body gradually relaxed and she sank into a deep sleep, Luo Jinxiao carefully laid her back down on the bed. Sitting beside her, she smiled contentedly, her heart overflowing with joy at having finally received Qu Weiyin’s affirmation of care. The joy overshadowed any thoughts of the challenges that lay ahead.
At that moment, the flickering candlelight enveloped the two of them in warmth and tranquility.
Luo Jinxiao watched Qu Weiyin for a while, then leaned down stealthily to kiss Qu Weiyin’s lips softly, giving her a light peck before lifting her head and breaking into a silly smile.
Her heart swelled, filled with bubbles of sweetness.
—
The next morning, Qu Weiyin awoke with aches from her internal injuries, her eyes fluttering open to find the space around her empty, leaving her momentarily disoriented. As she tried to turn and sit up, a long arm, with the sleeves rolled up, reached out to steady her shoulder and helped lift her up.
Then, Luo Jinxiao’s radiant smile came into view. Although her features were growing more mature, the familiar cuteness and dimples remained.
Upon recalling her words from the previous night, Qu Weiyin suddenly found it hard to meet Luo Jinxiao’s gaze.
“You sat here and guarded me all night?†she asked.
“Yes, but it was more than just that. Look,†Luo Jinxiao said as she draped a coat over Qu Weiyin’s shoulders, taking her hand and pulling her outside. They came upon a small, low table where Qiongqi sat cross-legged, scratching his head as he glanced at a scroll and mumbled to himself.
“Qiongqi?†Qu Weiyin turned back, confused.
“Yes! It’s all her fault for making Master Uncle angry, running off to eat and drink while I had to make her read the *Three Character Classic*. Otherwise, she won’t get any beef to eat in the future.â€
“That was my misunderstanding. How could you…†Qu Weiyin shook her head, but then her tone shifted. “Though it’s good for her to learn; she’ll be better equipped to communicate with others in the future.â€
“I think that’s wonderful,†Luo Jinxiao replied with a bright smile, ignoring Qiongqi as she turned back to Qu Weiyin. “Let’s cultivate together today—it’ll be great for your recovery.â€
Qu Weiyin had just opened her mouth to agree when she suddenly recalled something, her expression shifting as she shook her head. “I still have to teach a class today.â€
“Your body is like this, and you still want to teach? I’ll go for you,†Luo Jinxiao insisted.
Qu Weiyin helplessly patted Luo Jinxiao’s shoulder. “That’s not okay. It’s nothing serious; it’s just the demonic energy acting up, causing some agitation. It’s no big deal.â€
Her gaze held a gentle warmth that could drown someone in affection as her fingertips brushed against Luo Jinxiao’s earlobe, tucking the falling strands of hair behind her ear.
“You go do what you have to.â€
Feeling a rush of affection, Luo Jinxiao couldn’t bring herself to insist anymore. She was somewhat dazed as Qu Weiyin nudged her toward the door, but just as she was about to leave, she suddenly clung to the doorframe, poking her head back inside with a pitiful look. “I stayed up all night for you, and now you want to send me away as soon as you wake up?â€
Qu Weiyin was momentarily taken aback. “What do you mean?â€
“If I leave, don’t you want me to stay, Master Uncle?†Luo Jinxiao said with a silly grin, her eyes sparkling like crescent moons, her pink lips forming a cheerful smile.
Qu Weiyin couldn’t help but laugh, feeling somewhat exasperated, but she simply replied with a noncommittal “mm-hm.â€
But Luo Jinxiao remained unmoved, her carefree grin unyielding.
Qu Weiyin finally relented, clearing her throat before lowering her head slightly and whispering, “I miss you.â€
Luo Jinxiao perked up at these words, her joy evident as she seized the opportunity. While Qu Weiyin wasn’t looking, she stretched her neck and rubbed her cheek against Qu Weiyin’s, whispering playfully, “I miss you too.â€
Then, without hesitation, she turned and dashed away.
However, Luo Jinxiao was so excited that she forgot to use her sword to fly. The moment she stepped outside, she missed her footing and fell quietly, landing with a splash in the rushing river below the cliff.
Qu Weiyin was still reeling from Luo Jinxiao’s playful tone when she heard an unusual sound. Looking down, her exquisite phoenix eyes widened in disbelief as she waved her hand, and Luo Jinxiao, drenched like a drowned rat, floated back up from the water.
“This girl,†she murmured, shaking her head.
After the door closed, Qu Weiyin walked over to the table, only to see that Qiongqi had already taken advantage of everyone’s absence to make an escape, leaving behind a mess.
She bent down to tidy up the scattered books, but suddenly felt a wave of dizziness wash over her, stumbling as she kneeled by the low table and resting her forehead on its surface, needing a long moment to recover.
Taking a deep breath, she pulled out the Panorama of Mountains and Rivers from her sleeve. After unfolding it, the beautifully embroidered scroll emitted a faint glow. Qu Weiyin followed the techniques depicted in it to circulate the chaotic blend of spiritual and demonic energy within her. After a while, she finally felt somewhat better.
She stared at the scroll for a long time, then took a piece of talisman paper, wrote down Luo Jinxiao’s name on it, and placed it near her heart on her shoulder. Channeling her spiritual energy into her palm, she ignited the talisman, the sound of burning flesh accompanying the flames. Qu Weiyin clenched her teeth tightly, stifling any sound that threatened to escape her lips.
After a while, the now-blank talisman fell to the floor, and Qu Weiyin remained drenched in sweat. She waved her hand to conjure a bronze mirror, subsequently loosening her clothing to reveal a small, delicate part of her shoulder.
The characters etched deeply into her skin were clear and unmistakable.
She hoped that in the future, even if she lost her current sensibilities, she would still remember that she deeply loved someone.
Time flew by quickly as the apricot blossoms on the mountain bloomed and then fell, signaling the approach of summer with the increasingly hot sun.
Wuhui Sect gradually fell into a routine; perhaps they sensed the impending danger, as everyone worked diligently on their cultivation. Disciples gathered daily on the Baiyu platform to spar, creating an atmosphere of prosperity and vibrancy.
Meanwhile, in Wuhui Palace, large glowing orbs and incense sticks were displayed along the route, preparing for the upcoming divine festival.
As the name suggests, the divine festival day marks the destruction of the Divine Realm, and cultivators would commemorate it by making offerings to the heavens in hopes of finding peace.
On this day, Luo Jinxiao sat in a corner of Wuhui Palace, propping her chin on her hand, watching Qu Weiyin teach in the center of the grand hall. Before long, she started to drift off to sleep.
Someone beside her gently nudged her awake, whispering, “Sister Luo, it’s over. Aren’t you going up?â€
Luo Jinxiao groggily woke up, thanking Ke Tao, before wiping away the drool and hurriedly running up to Qu Weiyin, who was tidying up her books and met her gaze.
“This time you’re teaching about formations. You already understand it, so what are you coming to listen for?â€
“I’m not here to listen to your lecture; I came to see you,†Luo Jinxiao said with a bright smile, following Qu Weiyin out of the grand hall. The moment their figures disappeared, the hall erupted into a buzz.
“Look, Sister Luo is waiting for Master Uncle Qu again!â€
“Come on, come on! You owe me; three taels of silver and a spirit pill!â€
Qu Weiyin could hear the lively chatter behind her clearly. She couldn’t help but smile, turning around to lightly tap Luo Jinxiao on the head with the rolled-up book.
“How has your cultivation been these past few days? You’ve been a mess. I can tell you haven’t been training properly.â€
“Not at all!†Luo Jinxiao eagerly replied, leaning closer. “I just broke through to the Tribulation Period yesterday.â€
“That’s not bad,†Qu Weiyin said, a smile lighting up her face, her eyes shimmering like water, reflecting traces of joy.
Once they returned to Cold Cloud Pavilion, Luo Jinxiao went to brew tea for Qu Weiyin. Having recently learned the art of tea-making, she hurried to show off her skills.
Qu Weiyin sat alone at the low table, and upon not seeing Luo Jinxiao, her brows furrowed slightly. She supported herself against the table and suddenly coughed harshly.
Her body was caught between the realms of immortality and demonhood, feeling neither fully one nor the other, which made her increasingly frail over the days.
When Luo Jinxiao returned with the tea, Qu Weiyin had regained her composure and was writing something with a brush on paper. The daylight streamed in through the window, mingling with a bit of dust, creating a serene atmosphere.
Luo Jinxiao stared at her for a while, unwilling to break the tranquility. She tightened her grip on the teapot, her eyes reflecting a deep shadow.
But she quickly shook off her somber thoughts, walking cheerfully over to Qu Weiyin’s side. She placed the teapot down and knelt beside her.
“What are you writing?†Luo Jinxiao asked.
“It’s nothing, just writing some basic techniques and mental mantras. You can keep them; they might come in handy someday,†Qu Weiyin replied casually, her nimble fingers gripping the brush, forming elegant characters on the paper.
Luo Jinxiao didn’t speak further. Instead, she quietly watched Qu Weiyin, then shifted closer behind her and asked, “Master Uncle, if you’re tired, lean back for a moment.â€
Qu Weiyin responded with a faint “mm.†After a while, she set the brush at an angle atop the inkstone, her body gently leaning back into Luo Jinxiao’s embrace.
The fragrance of her hair filled Luo Jinxiao’s senses as Qu Weiyin leaned against her. In that instant, Luo Jinxiao felt her heart turn into a puddle, and she wrapped her arms around the soft form nestled against her.
The two basked in their shared warmth, neither wanting to move and disturb the tranquil moment.
“Jinxiao,†Qu Weiyin suddenly called out.
“What is it?†Luo Jinxiao replied.
“Try calling my name.â€
Luo Jinxiao paused, her heart swelling with joy at the request. She cleared her throat and replied earnestly, “Qu Weiyin.â€
Qu Weiyin tilted her head back, feigning annoyance as she shot a playful glare at Luo Jinxiao. “Why are you so foolish?â€
“Micro Yīn.†Luo Jinxiao amended, her voice now softer and laced with bashfulness.
Only then did Qu Weiyin seem satisfied. She nodded, and their hands intertwined, neither willing to let go.
“I just wanted to hear it, to have more memories,†Qu Weiyin whispered. She then produced a small paper pouch from her sleeve and handed it to Luo Jinxiao. “You hold onto this. Perhaps one day, it will allow the two of us to reunite again.â€
Luo Jinxiao held tightly onto the paper pouch, her delicate brows furrowing slightly. Just as she was about to speak, Qu Weiyin interrupted her. The beautiful figure nestled in her arms suddenly straightened, facing her, studying her with intense focus.
With her almond-shaped eyes, dark pupils, rosy lips, and bright smile, Qu Weiyin took in every detail.
“Close your eyes; there’s something on your face,†Qu Weiyin suddenly said.
“There isn’t…†Luo Jinxiao reached up to touch her face, but Qu Weiyin caught her wrist, showing slight annoyance. “Just listen to me.â€
Luo Jinxiao, confused, responded with an “oh†and closed her eyes.
In an instant, soft lips pressed against hers. Luo Jinxiao’s mind heated up, as if she were a kettle just starting to boil, buzzing with excitement.
She abruptly opened her eyes, surprised to see Qu Weiyin’s enchanting features before her. With her gaze lowered, she could perfectly see Qu Weiyin’s delicate nose and fragrant, red lips.
“Don’t move,†Qu Weiyin instructed, placing her hands on Luo Jinxiao’s shoulders, her tone firm.
Luo Jinxiao immediately raised her hands, signaling that she wasn’t moving.
Qu Weiyin continued to explore, and Luo Jinxiao had never experienced such sweetness before. She felt like a lantern, warm inside and radiant on the outside.
With a soft sigh, Qu Weiyin pulled back from her face. Her eyes sparkled with tenderness as she softly said, “Now I can remember you.â€
Finally able to breathe, Luo Jinxiao felt a twinge of pain in her mouth. When she touched her lips, a metallic taste spread, and she realized she had been bitten.
She gazed intently at Qu Weiyin’s glistening lips, reluctant to part. She wished she could stay here with such a beautiful woman, trapped in this moment forever, not wanting to go anywhere else.
But in the next instant, Qu Weiyin suddenly said, “Tomorrow, you need to go to Xumi Mountain Manor for me.â€
“What for? I’m not going! What if you take this chance to run away? Where would I find you?†Luo Jinxiao shook her head decisively.
“I’m not a criminal, constantly thinking about escaping,†Qu Weiyin retorted, half laughing in irritation. “I need a ceremonial artifact for the sacrificial offerings. If you don’t help me, I’ll have to go myself, and on the day of the offering, I have important matters to attend to—I can’t leave.â€
“Jinxiao,†Qu Weiyin frowned, using her delicate fingers to pinch Luo Jinxiao’s cheeks.
“Fine, fine! I’ll go!†Luo Jinxiao finally relented. “But you must promise to wait for me to return. No running away.â€
Qu Weiyin shook her head, wearing a smile that could drown someone with its sweetness. “I promise I will wait for you to come back.”
