Theme:Â Angst
It had been almost a year since Muzan’s defeat. It was nice, of course, to not have to constantly go on missions and worry about the demons, but in a way, Giyuu missed it.Â
Or rather, he missed those that had fallen in the fight. The Hashira, especially. He hadn’t realized in time how much he actually had cared about all of them, only after they had died had he found out. And he felt terrible for it. He’d never even had the chance to show his appreciation.
Besides that, there was another feeling. One he’d been experiencing before, but now it was much stronger. Guilt, from not being able to protect them, and he feeling that he should’ve died instead. And now tht he didn’t really have a use left in this world, Giyuu thought it was time to let go of life. It was time and he was ready.
Walking up a hill, he made sure to silently thank everybody he had met. He had to show what little appreciation he could while he was still alive.
At the top of the hill, there was a huge tree with a swing attatched onto the strongest branch. The view was amazing, looking out into the ocean and the sun just happening to set there. The hill dropped off as a cliff so as you were swinging, it would feel as if you were going to shoot off of the swing and into the ocean. Which was exactly what Giyuu wanted.
He settled himself onto the swing and looked out of the beautiful scenery unfold in front of him.
As he pumped his legs, swinging back and forth, he listed the names of those he had cared about, over and over until he felt he was swinging high enough.
Taking one last look around him, giving himself a chance to back out, he started letting go of the rope. Of his life.
Wind rushed past him and he felt his hair fly in all different directions. He fought the instinct to spin and land safely somewhere, letting himself soar over the water.Â
Fighting the urge to breathe as he fell, he felt the water rush past him, into him. He choked as water filled his lungs and he could feel his life slipping away. He closed his eyes as he plunged into the water, welcoming death to him with open arms.
______________
News of Giyuu’s death was slow to come, given that he had flung himself in the ocean, and the body was deep underwater.
At first, it was just a small trickle. A though. Nobody had seen Giyuu recently. They figured he just wanted a little space or something. But when Tanjiro went to visit Giyuu, he found the Hashira’s estate empty. In fact, it seemed as if it hadn’t been touched for the past wekk.
Kanzaburou had died a while ago, so they couldn’t turn to the crow for help.
That was when the trickle became drops. A light drizzle that rained down harder with each revelation. Each day. That was when everyone realized something was terribly wrong.Â
Sanemi was one of the most worried, however. Recetly, the two Hashira had gotten closer. Actually, for the last eight months, they’d been hanging out. Talking, growing closer, becoming friends… and then something more. It had never been said aloud, but it became clear their feeling for each other were past the friendship stage. Especially when, on a particularily clear midnight at the beach—neither could sleep—they kissed. Never had they fully stated that they were dating, but they didn’t need any confirmations. As their relationship grew to a more intimate stage, Sanemi grew hopeful for a normal and happy life. And then thunder struck on his sea of hope, disrupting everything and leaving Sanemi in a state of shock and denial.
And since the wall of worry grew taller and higher, Sanemi never ceased to look all over Japan, searching everywhere. At first he went to the houses of everyone he knew Giyuu knew, then to places like parks and beaches. Eventually he set his view to the wholr of Japan, with the help of the other surviving demon slayers, and the friends they had made since.
After three weeks of searching, Sanemi sat in the beach he and Giyuu had first kissed, looking out in the ocean. Drowning in the endless sea seemed like a nice option right now, if he wasn’t already drowning in his own endless sea of sadness.
Somebody came running towards him suddenly, startling Sanemi out of thought. He sighed. “What happened?” he asked, not wanting to deal with something at the moment.
The person—Sanemi did not know their name, only identifying them as a friend of Tanjiro’s—bent down, catching his breath before he uttered the words Sanemi had been dreading. “Giyuu Tomioka was found at the bottom of the ocean—it was low tide and some of the others were in the ocean and found him—he’s been obviously dead for a long time. I’m… I’m sorry,” he said solemnly.Â
Sanemi felt his heart drop to the ground, his face growing pallid, eyes widening. He stood still as stone and barely registered the boy calling his name. No… it couldn’t be true.. It just couldn’t…
“How..? Why..?” He heard the words—felt them form on his lips. It took him a second to realize he had said them.
The boy looked at him sympathetically. “We think it was suicide. Around where he lay is a cliff. Being a former Hashira, he could’ve easily latched onto it, but he chose not to… This is all a guess, though… I’m sorry,” he added.
The boy sighed, then turned and raced away—presumably to tell the others. Sanemi sank to the ground and buried his face in his hands. Through the whole search, he hadn’t let himself cry once. But now, as the sun set over the beach, as the truth settled in his mind, as the one person he had left lay dead somewhere, in the ocean, in a coffin, Sanemi sobbed, pouring his feelings out in tears until night.
