I love how some1 told me today that I could never write anything but angst for SaneGiyuu and I told them I would prove them wrong but then I went ahead and wrote this (it was in my drafts) 💀
I’ll write fluff in a bit

“Sanemi?”

Giyuu and Sanemi sat, side by side, on the porch of Giyuu’s house, eating. They had been training for an hour or two and had decided to take a break before continuing.

“Yes, what is it?” he asked, turning to his boyfriend. He gave him a gentle smile, reaching up to tuck Giyuu’s hair back.

Giyuu raised a hand, stopping him. Sanemi frowned. “Are you alright?”

Giyuu nodded, though he turned his gaze away from him. “I need to tell you something.”

Sanemi’s worry deepened. “What happened?”

Giyuu bit his lip, turning away. He held onto his plate tightly, blinking several times. “I… want to break up with you.”

An awkward silence stretched between the two as Sanemi processed this.

“What?”

Giyuu turned back, shaking his head so his hair grew messy. “I’m sorry. I just… I really loved you before—truly, I did, please believe that—but I just… fell… out? Of love? I care for you lots, I do, but I… not how… before,” he mumbled, dropping his plate down to the porch. “I’m sorry.”

Sanemi’s eyes were wide but they softened at the end of the explanation, though he backed away slightly. “Don’t apologize. It happens,” he murmured.

Giyuu moved as if to reach for Sanemi’s hands, but then thought better of it and dropped his arms to his side. “I’m sorry,” he repeated. “I’m so, so sorry. I did love you! I promise! I just… stopped, at some point. It was recently, it wasn’t for a long time, okay? But I was thinking about it and realized I just… I don’t know, I don’t feel the same as I did before. And I’m sorry, for saying this so suddenly, and-“

“Giyuu. It’s okay.” Sanemi crossed his arms. “Stop apologizing, I get it. Thank you for telling me and not staying in the relationship for longer. It would’ve been shitty of you to lead me on, so it’s fine.”

Giyuu pouted. “No! I’m sorry that I stopped loving you. I care so much about you, I don’t know what happened…”

Sanemi moved forward and slapped him. “See, your problem is you’re so stubborn,” he said. It was something he teased Giyuu about relentlessly, but there was a serious tone to his voice. “I said it’s okay! It’s fine. It’s only natural, it happens to everyone. It’s okay.”

Giyuu covered his cheek where Sanemi had hit him and nodded meekly. “Okay…” he mumbled. I’m so- I mean, alright.”

Sanemi rolled his eyes. “Will you ever stop apologizing?”

“It’s instinctive,” Giyuu said, huffing.

“Mhm. I’ve got to go now. I’ll see you around,” Sanemi said, grabbing his things. He didn’t actually have to go. He just wanted some space.

Giyuu, seeming to notice that, nodded. “Alright. Take care,” he said, waving as Sanemi left.

“You too.”

Once Sanemi felt he was safely out of sight of Giyuu, he rushed off to the direction of his house, almost tripping over Obanai in the process.

“Godfuck, what the hell happened to you?” Obanai asked, raising an eyebrow as he helped him steady himself.

Sanemi groaned internally. Of course he bumped into him now. Then what? Obanai would confess his eternal love to him and then they’d marry and live happily ever after?

He scrubbed furiously at his eyes, hoping that he didn’t look like a mess. But then Obanai said, “You look like a mess.”

God.

“I’m fine.”

“RIght, because you weren’t on the verge of fucking tears two seconds ago. Nothing makes you cry,” Obanai said, rolling his eyes.

“Oh my god,” Sanemi snapped. “It’s nothing! It’s not like Giy-… Never mind.”

“Did he do something bad to you?” Obanai asked, suddenly looking very protective. Kaburamaru rested his head on Obanai’s shoulder, staring curiously at Sanemi.

“No.”

“Oh. Then what?” he asked, exasperated.

“He broke up with me,” Sanemi said quietly, after a beat.

“…Oh.”

Sanemi nodded.

They stood silently, unsure what to say.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Obanai said. “Do… you know why?”

“I swear to god, if I hear someone say ‘I’m sorry’ one more time today…” Sanemi grumbled. “And yes, I know why.”

“Oh.” Obanai, not wanting to pressure Sanemi but also very curious, waited for him to elaborate.

“Just ask me why, you’re making it obvious as is,” Sanemi said, rolling his eyes.

“I didn’t want to be rude.”

“Yeah, well, it doesn’t matter.” He crossed his arms, glaring at the ground. “He said he ‘fell out of love,’ or some shit.”

“Oh, damn. Was it recent or had he never liked you or…?” Obanai asked, abandoning the idea of giving Sanemi space.

“Recent, he said.”

“‘He said?’ As in, you don’t believe it or was that unintentional,” he asked.

“I don’t know what to believe.”

“Me neither. I didn’t think this would bring you to tears,” Obanai said, hesitating before continuing. “You alright?”

“I’m fine.” He couldn’t have said anything further from the truth. “I just… You know when your thoughts take you too far?”

Obanai nodded.

“That. It’s stupid, but I’m fine.”

“Hmm, want to eat lunch with me?” Obanai offered.

“I thought you were eating with Kanroji today?” Sanemi said. “Didn’t think you’d miss eating lunch with her.”

Obanai winced. “Uh… right. She…” he paused. “I can eat with her tomorrow. I’ll send a crow.”

“Goddamn, you don’t have to go that far for me,” Sanemi said, taken aback. He hadn’t expected so much from Obanai.

“Yeah, well, you’re my friend, no?” Obanai said, offering him what appeared to be a smile but it was hard to tell, given that he was wearing a mask.

“Mm, thanks,” Sanemi said.

“Anytime.”

Obanai was speaking to Mitsuri one morning, talking to her about Sanemi.

“I’m kind of worried about him,” Obanai said quietly. (i wrote Obama first- :’>)

“Why so?” Mitsuri asked, picking up a strawberry with her fork.

“He’s been really quiet. Like, almost always in thought. I don’t know.” Obanai shrugged. “It’s probably about Tomioka, though.”

“Oh, right. Because they broke up?” Mitsuri asked, popping the fruit in her mouth.

“Mhm. Also, can I ask you something?” he said, after a beat.

“Of course!” She smiled. “What is it?”

“Well, is it bad I’m almost happy they broke up? I know it’s depressing and everything, to see Shinazugawa look so down all the time, but… I mean… I don’t know, sorry,” Obanai apologized, running his hand through his hair.

“Just tell him how you feel,” Mitsuri said, eating another strawberry. “He’s going to keep thinking you like me and he’ll never find out, then.”

Obanai frowned. “Better if he doesn’t find out. He’ll think I’m insensitive for telling him right after Tomioka broke up with him, and he probably doesn’t like me back.”

Mitsuri shook her head. “You never know. But I do agree for the second part, a bit. You should wait a week or two before telling him,” she said. “And! He’s coming over now, I’ll leave you two be.”

She winked at him, picked up her bowl of strawberries, and left, humming to herself.

Obanai sighed as Sanemi approached him, taking the seat Mitsuri had occupated a minute before.

“Sorry, did I scare away your princess?” Sanemi teased, glancing at Mitsuri.

“Nah,” Obanai said. “And she’s not my ‘princess.'”

“Mhm, well you fawn over her as if she is one,” he said. “You doing anything today?”

“No, why?” Obanai asked.

“Just bored.”

“Right. Want to go on a walk, or some shit? I’m going to train a bit around noon and then sleep, I think. Still have a couple hours,” he said.

“Mm, alright. Will you eat, thought?” Sanemi asked, standing.

“Eh, I ate a little earlier.”

“A little.”

Obanai rolled his eyes. “A bowl of fruit. Kanroji gave it to me.”

“Of course she did.”

“The fuck is that supposed to mean?!” Obanai whined.

Sanemi laughed. “Let’s go.”

As they walked, Obanai kept glancing at Sanemi, unsure if he was alright. He was being very conspicuous about this, though, and eventually Sanemi got annoyed and said, “The fuck do you want?”

Obanai flinched. “Uhm.”

“You keep looking at me like I’m a child walking on the edge of a cliff or some shit,” Sanemi said, stopping.

“Sorry.”

“It’s fine.”

“I was just worrying about something,” Obanai said, busying himself by patting Kaburamaru.

“Hm. What is it?”

“You.”

Sanemi rolled his eyes. “No shit. But what, more specifically?”

“The thing about Tomioka?”

The Wind Hashira sighed. “Of course. What’re you worrying about him for? I’m fine.”

“I don’t know. Just, I’m hoping you aren’t thinking he stopped liking you because nobody would like you? I know you never saying anything about that, but you kind of seemed to be thinking it and I didn’t want you to think shit like that because it’s not true,” Obanai rambled. “I know people like you, I know I do.” He froze. “I mean, I know I do know someone that likes you, you know? Like, it’s not you why Tomioka stopped liking you and-“

Sanemi raised a hand to stop him. “I get it. Chill. I’m fine. Who’s this person that likes me, though?” he asked, grinning.

Obanai cursed at himself internally, running a hand down his face. “Uhm… I can give you a hint? I… doubt they’d want me to tell you anyways,” he mumbled.

“Right. Are they in the Demon Slayer Corps?” Sanemi asked.

“Mhm.”

“What’s their gender?”

Obanai huffed. “I’ll give you a clue per day, no more,” he said, crossing his arms and promptly continuing down the path.

“Fineee, but you better keep your word because I’ll be asking you tomorrow too,” Sanemi warned.

“Whatever.”

×××

Throughout the following days, Sanemi begged Obanai to tell him who it was, more to keep himself distracted then actual curiousity—although he couldn’t deny that he was even a little curious.

Obanai would give him small things about himself, making sure to gloss over any major hints and only give vague ones that could apply to a lot of people.

Sometimes, he managed to avoid Sanemi for a day by hanging out with Mitsuri, but Sanemi always found him again and made him tell him something else.

A week flew by and Mitsuri insisted that, since it had been over two weeks since Giyuu and Sanemi had broken up, Obanai might want to tell Sanemi now.

Of course, Obanai denied, but it got harder to each time as Sanemi grew closer to figuring out who he’d meant.

Eventually, Sanemi asked, “So… is he a Hashira?”

Obanai hesitated.

Sanemi raised an eyebrow. “He is, isn’t he.”

He gave him a slow, hesitant nod. A nod that would narrow down who it might be to less than nine people.

“Great. So it’s obviously not Kanroji and Kocho, since they’re both women. Can’t be Tomioka, for obvious reasons. Tokito is too young. So that brings it down to… Uzui, Rengoku, Himejima, and… you,” Sanemi said.

Obanai flinched at the last word but managed to nod again.

“Nice. I’ll see you tomorrow then,” Sanemi said, giving him a faint smile before leaving.

Obanai let out a breath. He hadn’t figured it out yet, luckily.

He raked his brain for all the things he’d said to Sanemi about himself. He was a Hashira, he was male, Sanemi knew him, etc.

And then one.

That he was below average height.

Fuck.

Both Tengen and Gyomei were tall, Kyojuro was maybe a bit over or around average.

Obanai was the shortest of all four, though.

Which meant, if Sanemi remembered that clue, he would figure it out.

Obanai explained this all to Mitsuri, worried.

“Hmm, tell him before he figures it out, then!” Mitsuri insisted. “Wouldn’t it be better that way?”

Obanai hesitated. “No…?”

Mitsuri sighed. “It would! Then you don’t have to have him asking you if you like him, it would be so awkward, right?”

“I mean, the other way is still awkward… But fine,” he mumbled.

“Great! Will you tell him tomorrow?”

Obanai nodded reluctantly. “Yes… Tomorrow.”

And tomorrow it was.

Like always, Sanemi approached Obanai. Except this time, Obanai stopped him from saying anything.

“So, uhm, before you ask me about the hint or whatever, I need to tell you something,” Obanai said quietly.

“Oh. Okay. I wasn’t going to ask that, but alright,” Sanemi said, leaning back against a tree.

“Uhh…”

“Tell me,” he said, waiting impatiently.

“Well. Funny story,” Obanai said, moving his face to an angle Sanemi wouldn’t be able to see him well with. “I like you.”

Sanemi blinked. “Oh. I thought you liked Kanroji..?” he said quietly.

Obanai shrugged, his gaze on the ground. “Uhm… That was an act so you wouldn’t find out. She knows, too…”

“Damn.”

Obanai glanced up. “You don’t seem as surprised by this as I thought you would be.”

Sanemi shrugged. “I figued it out last night. I wasn’t completely sure since it seemed a bit random, given that you liked—or, I thought you liked—Kanroji… So, it is a surprise but not entirely.”

Obanai groaned, covering his face with his hands. “Of course you already knew.”

“Mm, it wasn’t hard to figure out after you told me that he—or you, I guess—was a Hashira,” he pointed out.

“Great. Will you kill me now?” Obanai whined, peeking through his fingers to look at Sanemi.

“Can I kiss you first?” Sanemi asked, rather suddenly.

“What?” Obanai stared at him.

“Sorry,” Sanemi said, a smirk growing on his face.

“No, seriously, what did you say?” Obanai asked.

“Can I kiss you first?”

“Why the hell would you want to kiss… me?” he asked. It was a genuine question.

“Why not?” Sanemi shot back.

“Because you just broke up with Tomioka two weeks ago and then I told you that I liked you and you literally have never given any indication you might feel the same,” Obanai deadpanned.

“Right… About that. You know how you pretended to like Kanroji so I wouldn’t find out you liked me? Basically, I was doing that, except I wasn’t pretending to like anyone,” Sanemi said.

“…Oh. I’m stupid, aren’t I,” Obanai said, turning to a tree and hitting his head on it several times.

Sanemi pulled him away from the poor tree, turning him to face Sanemi.

“I think we both are. But you haven’t answered my question yet. Can I kiss you?” Sanemi asked, his face serious.

Obanai met his eyes, finding them sincere. “Hm. Then, if what you said is true, then hell yes,” he decided, tugging at his bandages.

Kaburamaru seemed to be rolling his eyes as he moved away, letting Obanai drop the bandages to his shoulders.

Sanemi pulled him closer, their breaths mixing together for a beat before he leaned down, pressing his lips against the scarred ones of Obanai. The kiss was short but palatable, and when they pulled apart Obanai looked like a child if Christmas had come early.

He had a goofy smile plastered on his face and he had a shy blush coloring his cheeks as he looked away, embarrassed.

Sanemi laughed at this, finding it adorable. “I didn’t know you could be like that.”

“Oh, shut up,” Obanai grumbled, crossing his arms.
