The written exams were a breeze. Usually, Killua would’ve pretended to miss a few questions as he didn’t want to be accused of cheating, but he didn’t have the energy for that. The entire class gathered in their hero costumes, as well as several teachers. Killua let out a thoughtful hum, thinking back to the rumors that they would be fighting robots. That’d be too easy. He thought, watching as Ashido and Kaminari enthused over the upcoming fight. Suddenly, the tiny mouse principal poked his head out from Shota’s scarf. “Don’t get so excited, children! We’re changing up the tests this year.” Ashido and Kaminari stopped their celebrating as Nezu spoke. Shota explained how they were indeed fighting the teachers, and not only that but they were doing so in pairs.

I wonder who I’ll be pitted against. Killua mused. His question was soon answered as he listened to Nezu list off the teams. Sato and Kirishima against Cementoss, Tokoyami and Tsu against Ectoplasm, Iida and Ojiro against Power loader, Momo and Todoroki against Shota, Uraraka and Aoyama against thirteen, Ashido and Kaminari against Nezu, Koda and Jiro against Present Mic, Hagakure and Shoji vs Snipe, and- me and Sero vs Midnight?

Killua let out a groan. This is going to be a piece of cake. Killua assumed each of these matches were supposed to make you struggle, give something that would be hard to overcome. Powers that would counter each other. However, Midnight’s quirk wouldn’t even affect him. No drug, poison, or sedative took effect on him. So this match would be a piece of cake. Although, surely they know that it won’t affect me. The mask should filter out the smoke anyways.

The goal of the assessment was to either clamp handcuffs on your assigned teacher, or flee the combat area. Killua could easily do either. He glanced at Sero, who gave him a nervous smile. Killua was only dragged back to the conversation when Allmight presented these odd wrist cuff things with weights. “These babies will add about half our body weight to our physiques!” Killua’s eyebrows raised as he watched the teachers put several weights around their wrists and ankles. Allmight sported six of them, while Midnight only needed two.

“So, uh…” Sero mumbled, sidling over to him. “You got a plan?” Killua glanced at Sero, then shrugged. “Your choice.” He said simply. Sero gulped, appearing nervous. “L-Listen, I think we should run. I can use my tape to tape my nose closed or something, but…” He eyed killuas mask dubiously. Killua placed his hands behind his head with a roll of his eyes. “This’ll be a piece of cake.” He said, as he and Sero walked to the monitoring room. “Her quirk doesn’t even affect me. Honestly, the only people I think I’d have lots of trouble with is Present Mic or Nezu. This is gonna be so boring.” He grumbled.

Sero let out a deep sigh. “Well, at least it’ll be an easy win. Right?” Killua shot him a dry look. “If I carry your sorry ass, I doubt you’ll pass.” Sero hesitated, then walked away with a huff. “Damn, you don’t gotta rub it in my face man..” Killua blinked, then frowned. I was joking. He shrugged it off, making his way into the back room to wait.

Shota watched as Killua and Sero’s match was about to begin, from the teacher’s viewing area. He’ll probably think he’s safe from Midnight’s mist and get too cocky. It was the only matchup he could put Killua in, while giving every other student a decent one as well. Although as he watched the white haired boy before his match started, he couldn’t help but feel a pit of worry in his stomach. Killua had…changed since the Hosu incident. Previously, Killua had treated everything as a game. He didn’t care about ascending to the top, he seemed to genuinely enjoy the training and activities.

But something changed in him that night.

He was no longer the carefree teasing kid he’d met nearly a year and a half ago. Killua seemed to finally be taking his training seriously. I know I should feel happy about that, but something doesn’t seem right. Yes Killua had been taking his duties as a hero course student more seriously, but he also seemed to stop socializing with his classmates. He stopped participating in school activities unless he had to. Whatever happened that night made him crawl right back into his shell.

Shota watched closely as the match began. He noticed how Killua just stood there, hands in his pockets, as Sero started to slowly approach the exit. As expected, he was quickly subdued. A few moments after, Killua started moving. He was walking towards the exit, but slowly. Shota’s brows furrowed. Is he even trying? Killua continued to approach Midnight, coming within her mist without even attempting to dodge or cover his mouth. It’s over. One second passed. Then two, then ten. And to Shota’s shock, his step didn’t falter. What..?

He and the other faculty had tested the mask to make sure Midnight’s mist could penetrate it, and it did. So how in the hell was the kid continuing to move? He saw Midnight hesitate, eyes narrowing as she watched the boy continue to stride confidently to the exit. He tried to think, how had Killua managed to resist the mist? Perhaps he’d used Sero’s tape under his mask? No, I would’ve noticed. Shota thought. He leaned in as the two drew closer to each other, surely there would be a confrontation. However, to his utter shock, Killua didn’t fight her or start running.

~~~~~~~~~~Killua’s PoV~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was no point in actually trying.
This game was too goddamn easy, and it was genuinely starting to piss him off how little he struggled. As he drew closer to Midnight, her eyes narrowed and she lashed her whip out. Killua flicked out a hand and took the blow. The pain was nothing, barely even noticeable in fact. I just want to get home already. He thought, as he kept on walking towards the exit. Midnight let out a laugh, although he could hear the hint of irritation in it. “It won’t be that easy, kid.” She said, cracking her whip once more and tearing nearly her whole sleeve off.
Ugh, fine. He thought, in annoyance. Killua spun on his heel and ducked under the second attack. He curled his fist, delivering a strong punch directly into her stomach. His eyes widened the moment the blow landed. For a split second, he’d been so consumed by his frustration that he’d forgotten that he wasn’t fighting a Nen user.
