The sun was high in the sky and sweat rolled down my exposed back and chest in painfully slow trails. There were no clouds for cover as I panted hard. Each breath rattled inside my chest as my legs began to tremble slightly. Hands out and stance ready I faced my sparring partner standing a few feet away.Â
His lavender eyes pierced mine in an intense stare, hands clenched and ready to throw another punch. Fist fighting wasn’t my strongest talent but I’ve been able to get by on mediocre punches and my sword skills in the demon slayer corps…until recently when my training was taken up a notch. Part of that notch included a new partner to practice with, Sanemi the wind hashira.Â
I should’ve felt honored but honestly, I was horrified. I was going from mediocre fighting skills to having to fight an actual hashira. Even though I’m not honored and slightly terrified of his presence, there have been multiple times in the past month where it’s been nice to be around him.Â
Of course that usually happened when we weren’t supposed to see each other as an enemy in the ring. Countless times Sanemi has let his competitive side take over leaving me more battered and bruised than necessary but he usually makes up for it at the end.Â
Today I could feel it was one of those days by the smirk plastered on his face. By my next intake of breath he charged forward coming at me from my right. I took a step back bracing myself as he rammed into my side. My feet slipped a bit before getting a better grip on the ground to which I readjusted and went lower, right into his stomach. I pushed outwards hearing a satisfying grunt from him.Â
He quickly snatched my wrists and twisted sideways as I felt my body fly through the air straight onto my back with a crunch. All the air from my body seemed to leave as I gasped horribly. My lungs refused to work for painful seconds till I finally gained my bearings. Sanemi leaned over me.Â
“Get up, we’re not done,” he barked out before moving back a bit, getting into his stance. I groaned out, trying to prop my body up. Slow and agonizing, I pulled myself back onto my feet. I frowned at the dirt smeared over my chest before glancing back up at Sanemi.Â
I didn’t want to continue, it was no longer fun or educational, just a way for him to bat me around for his enjoyment. My chest heaved in a desperate attempt to breathe but was cut off by Sanemi darting forward again, landing a punch right to my gut. Blood flew from my mouth and pain erupted from my middle. I hit the ground hard as my throat spasmed. My muscles ached as my stomach clenched.Â
I curled up in a pathetic ball hoping to blink away the tears that were threatening to form. Shudders and trembles crawled through my skin in waves. Sanemi once again stood over me, his shadow falling over my broken body. He crouched down before grabbing my head by the hair. I let out a whimper of protest as my tears fell. He released me but stayed near.Â
“Please…” I whispered hoarsely, “…enough.” I didn’t want to look him in the eye. I didn’t know what to expect if I did.Â
Minutes passed by as I finally caught my breath and was able to assess the damage to my body. Just by feeling the pain, I could tell he bruised my stomach badly along with my wrists. Minor flares of pain were along my sides, his favorite spot to bash me. Luckily nothing was done to my face or legs so I was still operational, for the most part, but I just hated when he would take things too far like this.Â
After a while I attempted to rise. My arms shook as I scrambled to find a hold on the ground, not daring to glance at Sanemi who watched on. I managed a bitter laugh before tucking my legs underneath and gently pulling myself up to my feet. My body swayed as I clutched my stomach, new tears rolling down my face at the pain.Â
I managed to stand for a few wobbly seconds before leaning too far. My legs came out from beneath me as I tumbled back to the ground. Before I hit the ground, however, strong arms grabbed my waist and shoulders. A new stream of blood spilled down the corner of my mouth, staining my skin further. My head lilted to the side, turning slightly to face him. Sanemi had an unreadable expression as he firmly yet gently hoisted me upwards, onto my feet.Â
Before I could mumble out my thanks, my feet were swept from beneath me and I found myself pushed against his chest. Sanemi’s chest. If my face wasn’t already flushed from pain, I might’ve blushed. I felt the points where his firm arms held me by the back of my knees and shoulders as well as my side against his chest. I pulled my arms against my own bare chest and tried my best to gather enough strength to give him my best glare. He looked down to me but didn’t offer any reaction before walking forwards.Â
I winced at the movement but bit my tongue to avoid any whimpers, I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction. We fell into a steady rhythm as the world slowly but surely went past. More time passed as my mind fogged up.Â
A sudden jolt shook me from my pain induced trance. My head snapped up making me cry out from the movement. When I calmed down I found that Sanemi had put me down on some sort of infirmary bed. I gazed up lazily to see his back turned as he apparently rummaged through a cabinet.Â
My body fell sideways to lay across the cot. A shaky breath escaped my lips making Sanemi turn to look at me. Our eye contact felt different somehow from all the other times. There seemed to be more tension. He quickly turned away again before snatching an assortment of items and returning by my side.Â
He quickly laid all the items on the bed as I spotted bandages, ointments, and more medical related items. My gaze snapped up to him but he was busy unraveling the bandages.Â
“Undress.” I flinched before looking at him with confusion as if I hadn’t heard his obvious command. He turned to me as I jostled back in fear of him carrying out his own demand. He stood still.Â
I began panting once again as he moved towards me slowly. His hands reached for mine and held tight. I gasped at the action, looking down to gaze at my hands being surrounded by his rough skin. My shoulders slumped in defeat.Â
“I’m only doing this to apply the ointment to your wounds. Nothing else will happen,” he assured quietly.Â
“But you have to remove everything so I can get to all your bruises.” His voice had taken an edge to it that made me believe him despite my anxiety. I gulped down my insecurities as I painfully pried my limited clothing off my body.Â
Sanemi had turned his focus to the ointments as he drew nearer. When he glanced at me I trembled slightly, whether in embarrassment or fear. He kept his eyes focused on my chest as his hands, now spread with ointment, glided smoothly and carefully across the damaged skin. I hissed through clenched teeth as I felt a stinging sensation. Tears fell as I prepared for a session of pain.
~~~
My eyes fluttered open to face Sanemi. It had been about an hour of Sanemi gently rubbing ointments on my bruises and treating my wounds with care. I’ve seen this side of him before but it felt more intimate this time.Â
I pulled the blanket further up my body tentatively so as to not reopen the wounds on my wrists. If he hadn’t twisted my wrists I would’ve been able to treat myself without having to undergo undressing in front of him. My face burned bright with the idea.Â
Sanemi had left to grab some food and I was anxious for his return. He hadn’t said anything the whole time but seemed to be in deep contemplation. I huffed out before wincing in pain once again.Â
A knock rang out across the room before the door opened to reveal Sanemi with a bowl in his hand. He strode across the room, setting down the bowl on a nearby table before sitting carefully on the bed. I gazed up at him.Â
“I’m sorry.” The apology seemed to echo across the room. Silence stretched on as surprise shocked any possible response from me. I’ve never known Sanemi to apologize, least of all to me.Â
“I can’t believe I actually hurt you this way.” His face seemed to crumble as anguish broke through his emotionless display from before. My heart tugged sadly in my chest seeing him this way. He looked so devastated, so regretful.Â
I shuffled my body around till my shoulder bumped his. His head snapped to me before he laid his hands on my shoulders, gently lowering me back onto the bed. A moment of conflict seemed to pass across his face till he laid himself down by my side. We faced each other as he played with my hands between us. I still couldn’t think of anything to say. My feelings were jumping around trying to pick an emotion to settle on.Â
“I just need you to be tougher. I can’t lose you to a demon,” he whispered gently. His lower lip trembled. It was starting to make sense. The way he would push me harder during training as if enduring and living through the pain was the main goal.Â
I shook my head slightly in disapproval before moving my hands to gently caress his face. He shivered at the touch but didn’t pull away. I traced his scars carefully before sliding my hands to his soft hair.Â
He took the hint and opportunity to pull me closer, connecting our lips gently. My heartbeat picked up quickly as my mind ran wild. Sanemi ran his fingers down my face to my neck before sliding around to my back and waist, holding me gently despite his earlier actions.Â
When we finally pulled away I noticed tears sliding down both our faces. He gave a sweet smile before leaning back into me to place one final peck.Â
“That was an acceptable apology but never do what you did again,” I hissed lowly. He gulped and let out a deep chuckle snuggling into my shoulder.Â
“Never again.”
