That evening, Alastair made his way to Rio’s house.
“I had a terrible dream that filled me with intense fear. It felt like there was a message meant for me. In that dream, you all died because of me,†he recounted to Aliyah, his voice trembling with emotion.
“I wish I could help you, but I’m weaker compared to the others. I’m still learning various forms of magic to strengthen myself, along with others, to prepare for the impending invasion by our enemies. That nightmare was a vision I merely shared with you,†Aliyah explained, leaving Alastair in shock.
“You can do that?†Alastair asked, intrigued.
“This ability is innate to me, I’ve just honed it to become stronger,†Aliyah replied confidently.
“How can I awaken my consciousness?†Alastair pressed, desperation lacing his tone.
“Don’t rush things, as it can lead to disaster,†Aliyah cautioned.
Suddenly, a thought struck Alastair, prompting him to hurriedly return to Blaze’s manor.
“He has begun his journey of self-discovery,†Aliyah whispered to Rio.
“In what way?†Rio asked, his curiosity piqued.
“You will find out,†Aliyah said, hastily following Alastair.
“Dad, I just realized something, your powers have been missing for a long time, right? I think I know how to restore them,†Alastair said seriously. Blaze raised an eyebrow while reading a book, closing it and standing up.
“Are you planning to awaken our consciousness again?†Blaze asked Alastair, his voice edged with caution.
“Yes, let’s try it. This isn’t something an ordinary witch can accomplish because of the immense power required. I can do it because I am a tribrid being,†Alastair stated with determination.
Blaze sighed deeply. “My son, you are not ready for this yet.â€
He averted his gaze, unwilling to see Alastair put himself in danger.
“When will we ever be ready? When we’re all dead?†Alastair argued, frustration bubbling over.
“Fine, if that’s what you want,†Blaze conceded.
They quickly made their way into the heart of the forest. Alastair drew a pentagram on the forest floor, carefully replicating the symbols he had seen in the book. For a brief moment, the pentagram glowed before the light vanished. Blaze and Marco stepped into the pentagram and took their places at the center. Alastair positioned himself in one of the vacant sections, then began to recite the incantations. Suddenly, the empty parts of the pentagram radiated with an inexplicable light. Aliyah, witnessing the vision unfold, gasped in shock and fear.
Alastair’s entire body illuminated as he continued to chant the incantation, a powerful energy swelling around him, connecting everything to him. In an unexpected moment, he discovered he could draw energy from his surroundings. A swirling blend of black and red energy enveloped the pentagram, binding him to Blaze and Marco. A potent aura emanated from him, and he began to levitate above the ground. He saw Blaze and Marco’s eyes ignite with fire, flames beginning to emanate from their bodies as he completed the incantation.
With a crash, he fell to the ground, immediately supported by Rio, who had witnessed the shocking event unfold.
Blaze and Marco couldn’t believe their powers had returned. Along with this extraordinary event, Alastair’s consciousness began to awaken, if only slightly.
Alastair sprinted toward school, his heart racing, when he caught a familiar scent and heard a voice that made him smile. It was Anthony, shouting from the hilltop as he approached. Alastair paused to wait, noticing Anthony clad in a white hooded jacket. He frowned as Anthony barreled toward him, not stopping in time and crashing into a large tree before bouncing off another tree and landing on the ground. Alastair rubbed his temple in disbelief.
“Where are you going? Why are you carrying a bag?†Alastair asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I’m enrolling again! I had to stop studying when my grandma got sick, but now that she’s better, I’m ready to study again!†Anthony exclaimed, excitement lighting up his face. Alastair pressed his lips together before breaking into a smile, nodding vigorously.
“Well, that’s great to hear! Let’s race to school!†Alastair suggested, and Anthony immediately agreed with enthusiasm.
“That’s a brilliant idea!†Anthony shouted.
They both took off, leaping from tree to tree, racing toward the school. To Alastair’s surprise, they matched each other’s speed perfectly, making him wonder how Anthony could keep up despite being a different kind of being and a fat one. Alastair noted that, regardless of Anthony’s unique nature, he still smelled very much human.
Alastair reached the school first, vaulting over the fence just as Anthony caught up.
“Alright, see you this afternoon!†Anthony called as he waved goodbye.
As Alastair walked toward their classroom, he couldn’t help but overhear the irritating buzz of voices and noise around him. He tried to block it out, and this time, to his delight, it actually worked. Now, he would focus on just one person.
“Anthony, where are you now?†he whispered into the air.
“I’m at the admission office,†Anthony responded immediately. “It’s so noisy, but I can still hear you.â€
“Try to block everything out and concentrate on just one person,†Alastair suggested.
As he neared his classroom, he passed by a bench where five teenage vampires were huddled together, talking animatedly. They were new classmates, having only joined the class the day before. As he walked past, he could feel their gazes follow him into the room. They wore sun rings that reminded him of the ones he’d seen in a book Rio had given him. In his mind, he vowed to make a similar ring for Anthony someday.
He couldn’t help but curse the vampires in his thoughts. It struck him as odd that they weren’t wearing concealer rings to mask their presence; perhaps they had chosen not to wear them intentionally. Suddenly, he recalled how repugnant the smell of vampires was, much like that of wolves. In contrast, witches smelled as sweet as flowers in a garden.
Curiosity piqued, he decided to remove Rio’s ring for a moment, testing whether the vampires would be able to sense him for what he truly was. The moment he did, all the vampires around him stood up, their sharp eyes fixated on him. Alastair cursed himself for his recklessness. Now, the vampires in his class knew exactly who they should fear.
He couldn’t help but smile at their reactions, especially as he shot them a menacing glare. His eyes changed color, and he could feel the fear radiating from them. In that moment, he understood what they were feeling. After relishing their fear, he waved cheerfully at them, a grin plastered on his face.
Then a troubling thought crossed his mind: what if they were minions of Gelle? He instinctively rubbed his temple, regretting his foolishness.
