Stiles was perched behind Scott, dusting off the crisp suit draping his shoulders. The day had finally come and Stiles was sure he had yet to see anything so beautiful. Not just the decorations and the outfits but the feeling of love in the air. Stiles caught himself off guard for a minute, when had he become a romantic? “This is it, the big day. Any jitters?” he asked noticing the look on his friends face.
“Tons…But the good kind”
“Well then, let’s go get married”
Lydia was weaved with Stiles’ arm as the two walked down the isle. Stiles could say he was impressed with the wedding. It was not that he was doubtful in the couples skills, but the two had always seemed like a lawn chair and courthouse type of relationship. So when he came upon the flower spotted hall and twinkling lights peppered on the venue ceiling Stiles himself felt in love.
In the end Scott was waiting with visibly shaky nerves, excitement and everything in between painted on his face. He was a man in love.
Stiles relived Lydia, letting her peck his cheek before they both took their place on the stage. He could see out across the entire crowd, Mrs. McCall was wiping away tears, Mr. Stilinski was close to doing the same. All eyes were fixated on the door as Isaac was about to come through. But the more Stiles scanned the crowd he found one pair of eyes on him. Derek’s eyes. Like Stiles was a gem in a sea of rocks Derek’s eyes admired him, and he smiled back widely when he caught Stiles staring back as well.
Stiles had secretly anticipated all of his friends wedding days, especially Scotts. Mainly because he had never seen himself having one. He held Lydia’s dress when she peed, picked up the flower girls dress for an old college friend, and even helped find and set up the venue for Scott’s own wedding. He was always confused that for someone who tried to stay so far from love enjoyed weddings as much as he had. Now, standing behind Scott at the alter, Stiles could only stare longingly at Derek in his fitted suit and full beard in the crowd and wonder if he would finally have a turn.
Stiles loves that man. He’s pretty sure he is in love.
After the newly weds had made their departure the entire party made their way to the reception. Just across the venue, white chairs lined a fresh green rolling hill. It was something out of a magazine and Stiles was impressed by his friend, who had ran off practically as soon as they said “I do” it was okay, they deserved it.
There was finally a moment to mingle. Stiles wasn’t hunting down the husbands or making sure their parents were comfortable. He was just a friend trying to enjoy his best buds wedding.
And as luck would have it he was stuck with some old high school friends that Scott, for some reason, thought it was a good idea to invite. It was exactly why he hadn’t planned on going to their high school reunion. Their questions. About everything, his soul mate, his job, if he still wore flannels every day of the week.
For once he honestly felt like bragging about his life, about how he in fact found his very hot soul mate and how his life had most likely turned out better than all of theirs combined. But instead he itched at the tattooed lettering beneath his suit, as he wondered where Derek was, and hoped he’d save him soon.
“I’m sorry but does the best man have a minute to dance?” Derek was slipping his large hand into Stiles’ own. Just for laughs Stiles looked back at the faces of his past classmates. A smile spread across his face almost as if he were saying “That’s right folks, he’s with me”
“With a handsome man like you? I’ve got tons” bidding a goodbye Stiles slipped his arm around Derek’s neck and let himself be pulled to the dance floor.
They swayed slowly under the starry roof. Stiles thought about how in the beginning he wanted to end up anywhere but Derek’s arms, and now he couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Especially now, as Derek’s hand would slide lower down Stiles’ back with every step.
Stiles looked up at his boyfriend with dreamy eyes “Kiss me will ya?”
“Don’t have to ask me twice” his bunny teeth made a light and bright appearance before Derek swooped in, and planted and hungry kiss against Stiles’ lips. Somehow the man managed to keep his arms tight, and their bodies swaying back and forth as they made out for the rest of the night.
He slept at Derek’s that night. It was always warmer in his bed, in his arms.
Waking up to someone was an experience Stiles never knew he needed in his life. The sight of Derek snoring soundly as he’d toss and turn to get more comfortable made his heart skip multiple beats. Which probably wasn’t a good thing, but Stiles accepted the feeling anyway.
Without warning Derek was sliding from the large mattress and rushing off to the bathroom. He probably hadn’t noticed his boyfriend was wide awake, but he sure did see the grin on his face when he returned “What’s got you so smiley?” He asked, in his sexy morning voice.
“Nothing. Everything. You” he drug out each word as he spoke softly and rubbed circles into Derek’s naked back.
“What have you done with my boyfriend? I thought being lovey dovey made you feel icky”
“What can I say? I’ve had a reason to believe in those kinds of things lately” With a sleepy smile, and morning breath Derek was leaning in to get a kiss. But instead he got an earful of his phone pinging. The groan that left his mouth just about shook the bed but Derek looked at the text anyways “Is everything okay?” Stiles’ voice was raspy as he rubbed his eyes open. Derek was on his belly with his face buried into one of his pillows. His jet black hair was cute as every piece was askew, not a single strand tamed.
“Yeah. I uh…I have to go out of town for a while”
“Oh. I-For how long?”
“Two weeks. I kept pushing it back so I could spend more time with you but the man upstairs is getting antsy”
“Well, I guess there isn’t much of a choice then”
“Don’t be mad at me please”
“I’m not, I’m not, I promise. It’s just, when this whole thing started I was trying to stay away from you. Now… Well now, I don’t want you anywhere but with me. I’m going to miss you for two weeks”
“I know it doesn’t help but I’ll call you every night. I’ll even get you the spare key if you want to stay here a few nights” Stiles buried his face in Derek’s chest, launching forward to hug him. He couldn’t tell if he hated or loved this feeling. Sure he had his friends but besides that he never wanted for anyone, he got by on his own and that was all he needed. But now he had Derek, now…well now he loved Derek and he was going to miss him for two weeks.
He was on a flight the next day.
Stiles could say he had never thought he’d miss someone as much as he missed Derek. It was almost like with every mile the plane flew Stiles could feel their tether being stretched further and further to the limit. He begins to wonder how on earth he managed staying away from him for so long. The young baker hadn’t been sleeping as well, mainly because he couldn’t remember how long it had been since the two had slept apart. He still see’s his fathers stare as he sneaks from the front door to go over to Derek’s condo.
Around the third day, he was leaning over the counter of the slow bakery, contemplating whether or not he should actually send Derek an “I miss you” text. He had made it this far without doing it but a part of him wanted Derek to know. That he was hurting, and hopefully Derek was also.
He was about halfway between sending it and not when the phone rang for him. Relief and gratitude overtook his face as he watched Derek’s stupidly handsome face pop up on the screen “I’ve been wanting to talk to you all day” Stiles grinned.
“Why didn’t you call?”
“Eh…I was swamped” he responded, looking around the deserted café “So, how’s the trip? You guys talking about nails and hammers?”
“Exactly what do you think I do?” Derek laughed, gasping for air in the camera “Are you alone in there?”
He began his answer with a nod, taking in Derek’s naked torso, and disheveled hair “Isaac should be back from honeymoon soon, I mean who honeymoons for that long?”
“Maybe he enjoying himself babe. What’s going on? Why do you need him back so soon?”
“I don’t. My employees have been helping as much as they can, and things have surprisingly been going smoothly. Aside from that oven Isaac was complaining about, I see why he was worried. That thing sparks like a motherfucker”
“I told you to get that fixed. I don’t want to using it until you do”
“I can’t afford a new one right now. But don’t worry I’ll just finish this months orders then I’ll stop using it”
“You are so stubborn” He smiled as he shook his head through the camera.
Then…
He heard him.
Stiles could hear the voice before he seen him. Someone calling out for Derek, and his green eyes snapped to whoever was there, following them until the mysterious person rounded the room and finally made an appearance. He was an average height, sharp jaw line, and an even sharper smile. The cloud of smoke following behind him and the fact that he had only been wrapped in a towel told Stiles way more than it should have.
There was an extremely attractive man, showering in his boyfriends room, in the middle of the night, states away. Was he wrong for the the feeling building up in the pit of his stomach? “I uh–I have to go, bye!” Stiles hung up without another word from him.
Derek wouldn’t cheat would he? Maybe I should have put out by now, but it’s only because I’m new Stiles wondered. He just needed to think, just for a moment. He likes to think he knows Derek enough but he’s been wrong before.
He’s been so wrong before.
