Kai gripped Nicolas’s hand tightly while they sat in his car at the school’s parking lot. They had spent the weekend together, with Nicolas fussing over Kai like a mother hen and Kai basking in the attention. But now they were forced out of it and had no choice but to go to school and face a certain someone.
“What if she tries to talk to me? What if she does something weird again?” Kai asked Nicolas with a frown coating his features.
“I won’t let her. I’ll be with you the whole day, okay?” Nic assured Kai, squeezing Kai’s hand in a comforting manner. “Come on let’s get you to homeroom.”
They got out of the car and walked into the school building. Kai was nervous. He wasn’t scared of Mary, per say but she definitely made his anxiety spike up. Every time he thought of Friday night his heartbeat went out of control and his hands turned clammy.
But Nicolas had been there every single time seeing as they were glued to the hip since Friday and he brought Kai back with gentle words and soothing hugs.
When they finally arrived in front of his class the hallways were practically empty and Kai turned to Nicolas with sad, anxious eyes.
“Don’t want you to leave.” He mumbled, twisting his fingers together.
“Hey.” Nic cooed grabbed Kai’s facing in between his hands and tilting his head up. “You won’t be alone in there. Noelle and Arthur are going to be with you and then I’ll see you in math okay?”
“Okay.” Kai nodded, trying not to be so clingy anymore. He wasn’t a baby and there was no need to act like this.
Nicolas smiled at him and after a moment of hesitation he lent down and pressed a feather light kiss against Kai’s forehead.
Kai’s eyes widened in shock and his cheeks furiously flushed bright red as he stared at his best friend who only softly smiled at him.
Nicolas actually k-kissed him!
His heart was out of control and his mind became a jumbled mess as Nicolas pushed him towards the door.
“I’ll see you.” He said grinning and turned around before Kai could say something.
“B-bye.” Kai shouted before entering the class in a flustered mess.
As soon as he entered the bell rang and he quickly shuffled to his seat.
“Kai!” Before Kai could even blink Noelle lunched at him. He softly laughed and hugged her back and smiled at Arthur over her shoulder.
“Are you okay?” She asked as soon as she pulled away scanning him for any kind of injury.
“I’m okay.” He said with a reassuring smile.
“I’m so so sorry for leaving you alone!” She said with guilt swirling in her dark brown eyes.
“It’s okay Noelle. You had no idea what would have happened.” He said in a low voice.
“We still should have kept you in sight.” Arthur added and he too was drowning in guilt.
“Guys it’s okay!” Kai exclaimed. “No more apologies.”
After another twenty minutes and useless prodding from their homeroom teacher they were free to leave and get to first period. As he walked out, Kai looked at the hallways filled with students and wondered if he was going to bump into anyone as he got to class. He didn’t want to walk alone but he knew he was just being foolish and quite cowardly.
“Come on, I’ll walk you to class.” Kai turned around to see Arthur giving him a reassuring look and gesturing his head so Kai would follow him. Kai shot him a grateful smile and walked next to his friend, feeling much safer.
When they arrived arthur smiled at him, “If you need anything tell me okay?”
“Thanks Arthur.” Kai smiled and Arthur nodded at him and walked to his class.
Kai took a deep breath before entering the class and when he glanced at the seat next to Rex he sighed in relief when he noticed it was empty.
Either Mary wasn’t in class yet or she didn’t come to school, Kai desperately hoped it was the latter.
He spotted Nicolas already looking at him worriedly and he smiled brightly to reassure him before rushing to his seat.
“Hi.” He smiled.
“Hi.” Nicolas smiled back before asking him if he was okay.
“I’m okay. Arthur walked me to class.” Kai added and Nicolas nodded, relieved.
“I’m sorry Kai.” Kai looked up at Rex with wide eyes, confused at his apology.
“Why are you apologizing?” He asked. Everyone was apologizing to him and he was starting to feel overwhelmed.
“I went to that party to protect people from getting hurt yet you did.” He said and Kai sighed.
“How is that your fault? You had no idea! Can people please stop saying sorry to me!”He exclaimed and Nicolas looked at him, startled.
“Kai…” he said cupping his face and turning it to his direction. “Calm down.”
Kai didn’t realize just how loudly he had said that and when his eyes strayed to the side he noticed most of his classmates had turned to stare at him. His face flamed with a rosy blush and he looked at Nicolas with embarrassment.
“It’s okay.” Nic smiled reassuringly. He dropped his hands on Kai’s lap so people would stop staring as much and grabbed Kai’s clenched hands.
Kai took a deep breath and turned to Rex with a guilty face but he only shrugged him off with a small smile.
Kai sighed in relief and turned to face the front of the classroom, ready to pay attention. But then more students walked in and along with them was Mary. His breath hitched and he tightened his hold on Nicolas looking down at his shoes, too scared to look up.
“Keep your chin up Kai.” Kai looked up to see Rex giving him a encouraging smile. “She can’t do anything to you, okay?”
Kai took a deep breath and nodded keeping his head up and not shying away. Nicolas gazed at him proudly before setting his hard stare on Mary and when she caught his eyes she looked down at her shoes and slowly walked to her seat.Â
As soon as she sat down next to Rex he scooted his chair as far away from her that he could and looked ahead as the teacher she started her class.
After half an hour of her babbling about mathematics she handed out the worksheet of the day and sat on her desk to grade. The students started quietly chattering and working together.
Mary turned around and looked at Kai with a small smile. Nicolas scooted closer to Kai so their chairs were pressed together and shot Mary a glare that made her smile drop.
“Kai.” She said in a low voice and Nicolas glowered at her but she didn’t back down. “Tell you friends I didn’t assault you.”
Kai scoffed and shook his head. “You did.”
“I did not!” She bit back and Kai frowned.
“Then what do you call drugging someone, dragging them to an empty room, climbing on top of them, touching them without their permission?” Kai asked with raised eyebrows even as his voice was slightly shaky, his heart was racing with anxiousness and his hands clamped.
“I… I thought you wanted it! I mean how can you not.” She whispered harshly and Nicolas had to take a deep breath and remember that he couldn’t grab her throat to throttle her.
“If you don’t shut the fuck up right now I will somehow find proof of what you did and get you locked up you bitch.” He growled at her and Kai grabbed his hand to pull him back to his seat when he started getting up.
“I barely touched him! What are you gonna get me locked up for?” She said incredulously.
“You drugged him!” Rex told her and she turned to glare at him. “There is no proof.”
“Just stop!” Kai said loudly and again half the class turned to stare at them.
Kai felt suffocated in the corner of the classroom with them arguing and now the other students were looking at him and all he wanted to do was to get out of here.
“Leave me alone.” He said looking at Mary before getting up with his things and walked up to the teacher’s desk before Nicolas could stop him. He told the teacher he wasn’t feeling well and wanted to go home. She looked up at him skeptically but noticed the way his face was red and he had a panicked look in his eyes and nodded her head at him, telling him to go to the infirmary.
As soon as he was out of the classroom he took a deep breath to calm himself and started walking towards the infirmary. But not even five steps in and someone grabbed Kai’s and turned him around.
“Don’t leave like that.” Kai looked up to see Nicolas staring at him with a small frown.
“D-don’t you have to be in class?” Kai mumbled and Nicolas scoffed. He pulled Kai to the nearest bathroom and shut the door behind him.
“Did you really think I’d stay in there with the way you left?” He asked bending down to have contact with him. Kai meekly shook his head before pulling at Nicolas’s sleeve for a hug.
Nicolas smiled, his frown dropping from his face as he enveloped Kai in his arms. “I made sure she won’t bother you anymore.” Nic spoke over Kai’s neck making the smaller boy shiver.
“How?” He asked with his face still buried in Nic’s chest.
“I threatened her and made sure she’s afraid of me.” Nicolas answered and Kai smiled.
“Thank you.”
“I’ll do anything to protect you baby.” Nic murmured, too wrapped up in Kai to notice his slip up.
Kai’s eyes widened and this time there was no denying that Nicolas called him baby. Kai’s cheeks flushed and he pulled away from the hug to stare at Nicolas who was giving him a tender look.
“L-let’s go to the next class.” Kai stuttered and Nicolas looked at him with raised eyebrows before shrugging and nodding his head just as the bell rang.
