“Okay, what’s wrong with you?”
Jisung’s gaze snapped from the rainy window as he brought his attention back to the underboss in front of him. “Huh? What? Nothing’s wrong.”
“Bullshit.”
“It’s the truth. I’m just… distracted.”
Jisung and Minho had spent the past two days together, living much the same way they did before, although they were more affectionate and stole kisses every now and then. They decided to let things flow naturally between them, and the natural flow was… well, slow. Everything was uncertain save for the fact they cared for each other.
Now that Jisung was no longer as sore and they’d had a few days together, Minho had finally dragged himself back to reality, which led to Seungmin sitting here playing games with Jisung once again.
“You didn’t fight with Minho, did you?”
Jisung smirked. He had, in fact, fought with Minho, and it had led to an extraordinary night. “We trained, but no, we didn’t have a fight.“
Seungmin’s eyes narrowed as he scrutinized Jisung. “Okay, so you two finally banged.”
Jisung gave him a flat, unamused look. “Do you really have to put it so bluntly? Besides, calling it banging should be reserved for one night stands, or something like that.”
“You didn’t say no. You and Minho actually-“
“Yes! Do we really need to chat about it over cards?” Jisung was blushing, not out of awkwardness or avoidance, but from slight embarrassment. They were talking about something private, after all.
Seungmin dipped his head slightly. “I’m sorry. You’ve been in another world since I showed up, so I just wanted to know what was up. Are you worried about him, or are you just missing him?”
Jisung’s mouth quirked up at the innocent question. “A bit of both. And I’m also sorry for being so distracted. I’m the one that wanted to play cards.”
“I’m not worried about it. If you ever need to talk to someone about it aside from Minho, I’m available as long as you’re not talking about you bedroom life.”
Jisung laughed. “Don’t worry, I like to keep the juicy details all to myself, so you won’t hear about any of that. If you do, you’ll hear it from Minho and you won’t be able to do anything about it since he’s your boss.”
“I guess I could learn to cope.” Seungmin grabbed the pile of cards he’d apparently set face down on the table, but he suddenly went stiff, stopping his movements completely.
Jisung raised an eyebrow. “You okay?”
Seungmin held a finger up, his eyes focused elsewhere as he seemed to listen for something. The back of Jisung’s neck prickled as the feeling of being watched crept up his spine. He felt like this just before the Yuns attacked him.
“We need to leave,” Seungmin whispered. “Get that duffel bag, move quietly, and get low. I’ll turn off some lights.”
Jisung believed in ‘better safe than sorry’, so he followed the instructions silently. Once all the lights were out, he peered out a small window, scanning the misty forest surrounding them. He couldn’t see anything immediately out of place, but he trusted his gut, and his gut was saying everything was wrong.
Seungmin obviously felt the same way. “Arm yourself, we might have to make a run for the car.”
Jisung grabbed the handgun that sat on top of the bag before closing it and tossing it over his shoulder. Anxious anticipation and adrenaline coiled in his limbs tightly as he followed the underboss over to the door. They nodded at each other, Seungmin threw the door open, and they took off down the hill at full speed.
Dark shapes flashed through the trees on either side of them. Branches snapped and leaves rustled.
An explosive crack shattered the air, and tree bark splintered as a bullet missed Jisung by less than a foot. He slid down into a crouch, firing in the direction of the shot. A figure ducked behind a large tree.
“Jisung!” Seungmin shouted.
Jisung lurched to his feet, his legs a blur underneath him as he half slipped, half ran down the steep hill. Another gunshot rang out, closely followed by one up ahead aiming for the underboss.
A figure came into view, their sights trained on Seungmin. Jisung raised his gun without hesitation and pulled the trigger. The figure dropped.
The shed came into view. Both men abruptly dove to the ground when the forest exploded in a flurry of bullets, making Jisung’s ears ring.
Seungmin rolled onto his back and returned fire, giving Jisung room to sit up and get a clear view of the uniformed men sprinkled through the trees. He shot two of them down. The rain of bullets paused, and the pair took off at a dead run again.
They rounded the shed just in time as the enemy fired on them once again. As the pair jumped into the car, Seungmin’s radio crackled to life.
Static filled the speaker and then- “–safe?! Are you safe?!” Minho’s desperate voice broke through.
The moment the Jag roared to life, Seungmin threw it into gear and hit the gas, crashing through the wall of the shed, and swerved onto the road while Jisung fired off a few shots out the window.
The radio crackled again. “Seungmin, do you copy?!” More static. “-ambush… Chimera set a trap, get out-“
Seungmin finally grabbed the radio. “We’re moving for the rendezvous, but they’re on our tail!”
Two trucks veered onto the road in front of them, and Seungmin yanked the wheel, sending the car skidding across the rainy road as he turned it onto a separate road leading deeper into the forest. More vans and trucks appeared behind them and in front of them again.
“Do whatever you can to lose them, I’m on my way!” Minho’s voice shrank as the radio tumbled into the backseat from the momentum of the car flying around another tight corner.
“Shit,” Seungmin hissed, “they’re cornering us.”
Jisung was glued against the door of the passenger side, his eyes squeezed shut as his head swam with dizziness. “What do you mean?” he questioned, trying to get his vision back into focus.
“There’s only so many roads out here, Jisung, and if they’re already ahead of me blocking certain ways, they’re leading us somewhere.”
“Where are you?!” Minho’s voice came again.
Seungmin rounded a corner and slammed on the brakes, reaching out to keep Jisung from hitting the dashboard. Ahead of them was a barricade surrounded by armed men dressed in that dark blue of Chimera’s uniforms. Behind them, Chimera’s vans were closing in. On each side of them, a thick wall of towering trees blocked the road in.
Jisung’s heart stopped, his blood ran cold. We’re cornered. He glanced behind them. “We have time to run before those other vans catch up.” He blindly grabbed another gun from the duffel bag, not wanting to risk being weighed down by the whole thing.
The soldiers ahead of them advanced, and Seungmin reached back for the radio. “They’ve blocked us in, Minho, it’s not looking good.”
Jisung kicked his door open. “We’ve gotta move, Seungmin!” He dropped onto the soaked road, shielding his body with the door while he waited for the underboss to crawl across the car.
“Surrender before we waste precious ammo!” a gruff, demanding voice echoed through the light rain.
“If we head into the trees, we might have a chance,” Jisung said, motioning forward. He was so focused on watching the enemy close in that he didn’t notice Seungmin murmur their location into the radio before shutting it off completely.
Jisung crouched on the edges of his feet, getting ready to run. “You ready?” When no immediate response came, he glanced back. “Seungmin?”
“I’ll cover you.”
Jisung’s heart went still. “Like hell. We’re going together, we can still make it.”
“For once in my damn life I’m not being selfish!” Seungmin burst out. He pushed him. “Run.” The underboss lurched to his feet and opened fire. Chimera’s guns retaliated.
Jisung rolled behind a tree, both guns in hand and at the ready. “I’m not abandoning you!” He aimed for the enemies now approaching from behind, covering Seungmin’s back.
“You’re the dumbest idiot to ever walk this planet!” Seungmin growled, ducking back into cover to reload.
“Idiot or not, you’re stuck with me!” Jisung’s gun echoed with an empty click. Out of ammunition. He dropped it and switched it to the other one he’d grabbed. The chamber was smaller.
Seungmin fired off another few shots and crouched again. “Jisung, we’re out-numbered,” he said, his voice resigned.
A cold fist was slowly tightening around Jisung’s chest, suffocating him and stopping his heart. His throat constricted as realization seeped into his bones with the rain. We’re trapped. Even if we use every gun in that bag, we won’t have enough and we’ll run out of time.
“Jisung!” Seungmin suddenly lunged forward, throwing Jisung to the side as a loud gunshot cracked from the forest behind him.
Jisung hit the ground, and rough hands suddenly grabbed his arms, yanking him to his feet. The world froze as he saw Seungmin slump back against the car, dark blood seeping from his chest.
“Seungmin!” he screamed, his voice breaking through the deafening silence. He thrashed against the harsh hands pinning his arms back, shouting and crying for his friend.
The hand grabbed onto his hair, violently yanking his head to the side. He continued to kick and struggle. A needle glinted in the rain.
Panic seized Jisung’s mind, but the hands holding him were strong. The needle pierced his throat, and his vision grew fuzzy.
“No!” he thrashed again, but his muscles were weaker. He lost feeling in his arms. “No.”
“Good to have you back, JH-47.”
Jisung’s body gave out, and the last thing he saw was Seungmin’s limp body as the world titled and faded away.

A lone Jaguar sat on the side of a rain soaked road, riddled with dents and holes. The passenger door hung open, shielding the body that sat slumped against the cold metal of the car, surrounded by bullet shells and dark red blood.
A black SUV stopped just behind it, and several figures jumped out, studying the scene and checking the body.
“He’s alive! Barely.”
“Get him in the car, and head back to base.”
Chan crouched, digging something out of the mud as his men carried the fragile body of Minho’s underboss. Once the mud was cleared away, a silver feather earring sat in his palm. “I’m sorry we’re late, Jisung. We’re coming to find you.”
