Basically, Will and Nico adopted a child named Bianca and she is a person of color, and she wanted to get braids done. Then the issues start.
I’m white, and I don’t know too much about African American culture, but I tried my best and if there are any bits that I could fix or seem derogatory, PLEASE tell me. I’m not looking to be racist. Thanks!! 🫶

———

The bell to the salon dinged, and Kaselle laid eyes on the whitest white person she had ever seen. His porcelain skin contrasted greatly with his dark brown hair and eyes.

“‘Scuse me, can I help you here? You lost or somethin’?” Kaselle asked over the counter. The man smiled.

“As long as this is Bubbles and Braids, then no, I’m not lost! I’m here for my daughter, Bianca.” The man pointed down at the little black girl next to him. Dang, that little girl was cute! She looked about 5 or 6, a little chubby, but fat babies are healthy babies! She was dressed in a little pink shirt and overalls, with matching pink sneakers. But the little chubby girl had dark skin, and was definitely not this skinny white man’s daughter.

Kaselle smiled falsely. “Yes, ok, what’s her name?”

“Bianca.”

“And what would she like done today?”

“What do you want baby?” he said, turning to the girl.

“Pretty braids! With beads!” she shouted happily. The man smiled.

“Just some braids along her head with beads at the ends. Thanks!” Kaselle smiled again, still falsely, and guided the girl to a seat far from the care desk.

“Tati! Come out here, pretty please!” Tatiana came out from the break room and walked over to Kaselle and Bianca. Bianca sat in the chair, looking in the mirror and making silly faces.

“What you want, Kaselle?”

“See that man?” Kaselle pointed at Nico. “I got a feelin’ he kidnapped this girl. I need to talk to her, get some info. Watch the host stand, will ya?”

Tati nodded vigorously, and took her seat at the host stand. Kaselle turned to Bianca.

“Hey baby! You want some beads? What color?”

“Pink!” Bianca shouted excitedly.

“Yes ma’am!” Kaselle got out her supplies and began brushing Bianca’s hair.

“So, Miss Bianca. Who’s that that brought you here, that white guy over there?”

“That’s my daddy!” Bianca answered happily.

“How bout ya momma, she couldn’t bring you? She white like that man?”

“I don’t have a mommy anymore. My daddy took me away from her. He said she’s bad.”

Kaselle’s eyes went wide. “Tati!”

Tati lumbered back over. Kaselle pulled away from Bianca in the chair. “Call the police! She was kidnapped, I knew it!”

Tati frantically ran to the back, and dialed 911, explaining the situation. Kaselle smiled at Bianca, and continued braiding her hair. Kaselle went fast, but she was a skilled woman. Soon enough, the braids were in and beads were tied to the end.

Just as she finished, three white police officers walked in the salon. All conversation between the women getting their hair done stopped.

“Hello, we are looking for Tatiana and Kaselle?” Tati waved crazily.

“Tati, right here!”

“What seems to be the issue here, ma’am?”

“He kidnapped this little girl!” Kaselle shouted, pointing at Nico.

“What?!” Nico’s eyes went wide with shock. He turned to the police. “Officers, I did no such thing!”

“Ok, sir. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will used against you in a court of law. Please turn around and hold out your wrists,” said of the officers.

“Sir, that’s my daughter! I-“

“Turn around and hold out your wrists, sir, before this gets ugly!”

“Officer, please!”

“No no, baby, don’t fight with him. Do as he says,” said a woman nearby. “Calm down, Dad, and do as he says. Deep breaths.”

Nico took a deep breath, fighting back tears, and turned around holding out his wrists. “Please, officers, just ask my husband, he’s in the car, just let me get him!”

“You’ll stay here.”

The woman stepped toward him. “Where’s your husband, sweetheart?”

Nico took another breath. “H-He’s in a blue Pacifica, he has blond hair and tan skin, his name is Will, please go get him! Tell him Nico needs him, please!” The kind woman nodded and dried off some of Nico’s tears. Meanwhile Bianca fought and squirmed against Tatiana’s grasp.

“Daddy!” she cried. One of the police officers talked to Kaselle, and asked questions.

“She said that he took her away from her mother!”

“Officer, please, my husband and I adopted her. Social services took her from an abusive home! Just listen to me, please! My husband has the papers, please officer, let us go!” Nico sobbed. Bianca shouted and kicked.

“Bianca, Bianca baby, listen to me! Stop fighting baby, stop, please! Listen to me! Deep breaths!” Nico yelled to Bianca. He was forced to his knees by the two policemen holding his arms behind him.

———

Will was sitting in the car, listening to music, when a woman hurriedly knocked on his window.

“Hello? Can I help you?”

“Yes, are you Will?” she asked.

“Yes, why?”

“Your husband needs you! Officers are saying he kidnapped your daughter, do you have any paperwork proving you adopted her?”

“Shit.” Will rummaged through the glovebox and grabbed the copy of Bianca certificate of adoption and his and Nico’s IDs. The social services officer warned them to carry it with them at all times, just in case, but Will never thought the day would come where he needed to prove Bianca was his daughter. He ran to the salon with the woman and almost screamed when he saw Nico face down on the floor with an officer kneeling on his back. Bianca was being held back by a teenager, who was having difficulties holding her, as she kicked and screamed.

“Daddy! Help me, daddy!” Bianca shouted.

“Will? Will, help me! Please, help me please!” Nico cried. Will fought the tears clouding his vision.

“Shh, honey don’t fight, I’m so sorry, I’m trying, okay?” Nico sobbed.

“Daddy!” Will surged toward her, but was stopped by an officer.

“Woah there, who are you? Can I see some ID?” Will handed him his and Nico’s drivers licenses and the certificate of adoption.

“That’s my husband and my daughter, let them go! We adopted her, we didn’t kidnap her! Right there, a copy of the certificate!”

The officer looked it over. “Is this real?”

“Yes, sir, please let him go!” The police officer examined the identification, then nodded to his fellow officers and Tatiana. The officer kneeling on Nico’s back stood and straightened, and Bianca was released. Will ran and grabbed Bianca, picking her up and running over to Nico. He wrapped an arm around Nico, and one around Bianca, both of which cried into his shoulder.

“Hey, you’re safe now, alright? Shh, I’ve got you both,” Will whispered. Nothing else mattered, just that they were safe. They stayed that, crying and being comforted by Will. Nico pulled away after a while, wiping his face, and kissed Will. He was breathing heavily and unevenly and his face was red from crying. Will smiled weakly and brushed the hair out of his face.

An officer walked over to them on the ground and  leaned his throat. “We apologize from the misunderstanding. The workers overreacted, and we had to follow protocol. We have worked it out with the manager, and you don’t have to pay anything for your daughter’s hair. We are all sorry about this, folks.” He smiled awkwardly and the policemen left. Will glared at Kaselle and Tatiana. He felt a tap on his shoulder.

“I just want to say that I am very sorry this has happened to you all, you are obviously loving fathers,” said the woman that had fetched Will.

“Th-Thank you, ma’am,” Nico said shakily. “W-Will, can we go home?”

Will nodded and kissed Nico’s forehead. He picked up Bianca and took Nico’s hand in his. “Thank you for your help.”

The woman smiled and held the door for them, leaving with them. Will noticed she was really leaving, even though her hair was only half done.

“A-Are you leaving? Don’t you want to finish your hair?” he asked.

“I don’t want those dirtbags to finish my hair, no,” she said, and she climbed into her car. Will smiled to himself. He put Bianca in her car seat and walked to Nico, who was leaning against the back of the car with his head in his hands. Will wrapped his arms around him and kissed his forehead. Nico hugged Will’s waist tightly, never wanting to let go.

“I was so scared, Will, they-” His voice broke. Will kissed his head again and stroked his hair.

“I know, baby, I’m so sorry. I should’ve been there.” Nico shook his head. He looked up.

“It’s not your fault. It’s no one’s.”

“Oh no, there’s blame to be assigned. And it’s right in those…those…gods I’m so angry I can’t even describe it. I can’t explain how much I want to kill them.” Nico smiled weakly.

“I know, but that’s illegal. We’ll have to settle for wishing them a bad fate. Maybe I can arrange their death, and make it look accidental.”

Will paused. “Maybe we are crazy white people.”

Nico shrugged. “Maybe. But I love you anyway.”

Will gently kissed his lips. “I love you too.”
