Nico had baby Michael strapped on his front in the baby carrier thingy, and three year old Bianca by his side, holding her hand. Michael had been fussy all morning and Bianca didn’t want to ride in the cart, so he was struggling to keep control of the toddler, and calm the 6 month old on his own. It was even more difficult when Bianca was squatting and jumping up, pulling on Nico’s arm.
“Alright, Bianca, tesoro, I really need you to stop. Can you help Daddy out and ride in the cart?” Nico begged the little girl.
“I don’t want to Daddy!” Bianca whined. Nico sighed. He took a deep breath and moved on, grabbing lunchmeat and cheese and putting it in the cart. Michael was still crying, and Nico couldn’t seem to get him to stop.
“Ok, Bee, you have to sit in here. I’m sorry baby girl, but Daddy needs to get Michael calm,” Nico said, and he reached down to pick Bianca up carefully.
“No!” Bianca yelled. Nico sighed. Today was really not going to be his day. An older woman walked towards him with a sour expression on her face.
“Excuse me?”
“Hm? I don’t work here, but can I help you with something?” Nico asked respectfully, while rocking back and forth trying to quiet Michael.
“Could you quiet down your children? Some of us don’t wish to hear all that noise at 8 in the morning!” the woman hissed.
Nico took a deep breath and smiled. “I’m doing my best, ma’am. My son isn’t having the greatest day, because he didn’t sleep well last night. I am trying to quiet him as you can see. Frankly, I don’t want to hear crying at 8 AM either.”
“Well, some people just aren’t suited for parenthood, and apparently you aren’t.”
Nico resisted the urge to murder her. “Ma’am. I’m doing my best, and you’re really pushing my buttons. I have a six month old son with a cold who didn’t sleep well and a three year old daughter who’s just excited to be in a grocery store. Please stop insulting me and let me go back to parenting.” Nico carefully and meticulously (so as not to hurt Michael) lifted Bianca into the cart and steered away from the woman to another aisle.
Michael continued to cry. Bianca whined about being in the cart. Nico put his head back and breathed deep. He knew Bianca meant no harm and she simply didn’t want to sit in the cart, but she was getting on Nico’s nerves.
“Alright, Bianca, honey, please look at me,” Nico said. Bianca looked at him. “I really want to better understand your feelings. Can you take deep breath and tell me what’s wrong?”
Bianca did as her father told her. “I don’t wanna ride the cart.”
“But Bianca, Daddy really needs your help. Can you do me the biggest favor and just sit in here? We are almost done shopping, okay? And I just want to get done quick.”
Bianca crossed her arms. “Okay.”
Nico kissed her forehead. “Thanks my big girl.”
Nico quickly went to the other aisles, grabbing whatever he needed along the way, and crossing off the things he put in the cart.
