After Not Budging Despite Two Pushes, He Simply Covered Up That Entire Hand With His.
There were more people than Sheng Wang expected staying behind for National Day break.
He thought that there would be the tragic situation where the entire residential block would be left with him and Jiang Tian. Unexpectedly, just Block 6 alone, five rooms were not completely emptied, not to mention the ones with year threes.
There were a hundred million reasons to stay in school: their house was too far, they wanted to make good use of the time to catch up with their studies etc etc, these were relatively normal situations.
Then there were some with slightly more special reasons: for example, their parents were too strict, and felt that “the mountains are tall, the emperor was far†by staying in school. Or, the adults at home were out and they wanted to mooch off the school’s food……
Then there were those who wanted to experience the campus on a holiday.
The perspective for the last one was somewhat unique, but they existed in room 602, next door over, and it wasn’t just one of them. The students staying in 602 came from a certain more special class in year two.
As everyone knew, Fuzhong placed heavy emphasis on physics and chemistry, so the physics-chemistry classes consisted of half of the “countryâ€. Other than that, there were also the biology-chemistry classes as well as the regular humanities classes. And then there’s the not-so conventional humanities class: the history-chemistry class.
Jiangsu Gaokao required the students to take history for the humanities stream, and physics for the science stream. The last elective subject was up to you. Therefore, there came the more niche combinations like history + chemistry.
Sheng Wang also only knew about how humanities students came in this freaking pattern after transferring over.
Everyone in 602 came in this pattern.
In terms of memorisation, the people in this class got to skip out on political studies. In terms of spamming practice papers, they were a physics subject less than the other science students. In the ecological system of Fuzhong, they accidentally became the most relaxed students in the whole level.
Once people become overly relaxed, they easily become extra.
The extraness happened to match up well with Class A’s people on a certain degree. Therefore, despite how their classes were situated on the topmost and bottommost floors, diagonally across each other in Mingli Block, they became the two classes on best terms with each other, with many personal friendships established across the two classes.
602 was also where two of Gao Tianyang’s scoundrelly friends stayed, one named Mao Xiaobo, the other named Yu Tong. They were both on decent terms with Jiang Tian, and so they rapidly developed into Sheng Wang’s scoundrelly friends too over the National Day break.
The first day of break, Old Mao and Tong-zi popped over thrice out of boredom.
First time round, it was 10 in the morning. The two of them came charging over with a stack of papers respectively in their arms, and started fake-crying the moment they entered. “Sheng-ge, Tian-ge, did your class give out homework yet?â€
Currently, Jiang Tian had just returned from his trip to the cafeteria to buy breakfast, Sheng Wang was leisurely blowing at the spoon and slurping up the porridge.
Upon hearing that, he casually pointed by the table, indicating the two to take a look themselves. “They did, it’s all there.â€
Old Mao fixed his eyes on it. “Damn, this thick? How many pieces?â€
Sheng Wang picked out the carrot strips in the side dish strip by strip, and used his spoon to scoop out a piece of boiled peas and ate it. He asked Jiang Tian, “Was it 34 or 36? I didn’t count, I only heard Old Gao’s wails.â€
“36,†Jiang Tian replied.
“How many???†Old Mao thought he misheard.
“36 pieces,†Jiang Tian said.
Old Mao and Tong-zi made eye contact, and stopped crying. They pulled over two empty chairs and sat down by the table.
Tong-zi made a thumbs-up at Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang, saying, “You’re living so tastefully! The tyrant is still the daddy! There’s 36 papers waiting here, and you two still have the spare time to eat breakfast? If it’s Old Mao and me, we won’t even have time to copy. Did nobody wail when they gave these out?â€
Sheng Wang said, “Yeah, I did. I said people would think we’re having our winter break if they didn’t know. But, I wasn’t physically in class, so the teacher didn’t hear.â€
Old Mao was amused.
“Our class gave out 19 papers, around half of what you guys got.†Tong-zi respectfully spreaded the papers on the table, saying, “Can we mooch over here for today? Maybe by basking under the glow of top students, our train of thought will travel more smoothly while studying.â€
“Sure,†Sheng Wang gladly said, “I love having people around to suffer together.â€
“You guys are still suffering more,†Old Mao politely said.
They dug out their pens, and waited for the two top students to study. However, five minutes later, their Sheng-ge was still picking out the terribly unfortunate carrots.
Jiang Tian pushed over the steamed dumplings. “Don’t bother anymore, there’s none in these.â€
“You sure?†Sheng Wang picked one up in skepticism. “I’ve been wanting to ask for a while now, did Fuzhong secretly contract a plot of carrot field or something? The cafeteria stir-fries them all day every day, no matter what dish, I see them. If they see a gap and stuff the needle like this for meat too, that’ll be good.â€
Old Mao gave a hollow laugh. “See a gap and stuffing the needle is impossible, but the shredded meat is indeed thin enough to stuff through the needle.â€
They raised their heads in anticipation, estimating that Sheng Wang should be done soon after eating two steamed dumplings. However, this mister took a bite, and his nose abruptly scrunched.
What now……
Tong-zi was a little anxious as he gripped his paper.
Sheng Wang flipped over half a steamed dumpling, and pointed at an extremely tiny red dot hidden within the stuffing. “See it? It’s everywhere.â€
“Did you use your 5.3 vision all on this?†Jiang Tian deadpanned as he pushed his own container of porridge, indicating Sheng Wang to put that remaining half of a dumpling there.
Tong-zi was a little numb.
In that moment, he felt that his and Old Mao’s appearance here wasn’t exactly the right move to make, but his desire for studying suppressed that moment of instinct.
Sheng Wang appeared to be a little caught by surprise too. After staring at Jiang Tian’s container of porridge for a while, he obediently ate the remaining half of the dumpling.
He swallowed the dumpling, and took a sip of warm water before saying, “I’ve already taken a bite out of it, next time round I’ll give you a complete one.â€
Jiang Tian raised an eyebrow, and didn’t say anymore. He drank the remaining bit of porridge.
When Tong-zi and Old Mao saw Jiang Tian keep the two containers, they met each other’s eyes, internally saying, they’re finally done. However, the moment they looked up, they saw Sheng Wang stuffing an egg tart into his mouth. Ancestor, why…
Old Mao and Tong-zi were both on the verge of breaking down.
Their expressions of agony were overly obvious, to the point that Sheng Wang was a little afraid to swallow. He briefly hesitated, and pointed at the container, “You two didn’t eat breakfast? Do you want some?â€
Tong-zi squeezed out, “No, not hungry. We don’t have the habit of eating breakfast, rushing homework is more important. We’re hoping to get them done by today, and go out and play tomorrow.
Sheng Wang finally understood what the two were in a rush for. He swatted away the flakes of pastry on his hands, quipping, “Dang, you two can start first then, you need us to yell ‘Ready, get set, go’?â€
Despite saying that, he didn’t continue dragging it out either. He switched on the phone’s screen, checked the time and said, “We still have time.â€
He placed the two containers into the garbage bag, tied it up, and then both his hands reached out straight to Jiang Tian, his palms opened as he summoned, “Here, serve me the papers.â€
Jiang Tian moved around the two outsiders, took two thick stacks of papers at the corner of the table, and heavily slapped one onto Sheng Wang’s hands.
It had been more than 40 minutes, this good sir had never left his chair; everything was catered to his needs.
Tong-zi looked towards Old Mao, asking, “Is this still the Tian-ge we know?â€
Old Mao shook his head. “Nope.â€
Sheng Wang found this slightly hilarious. He stuck out his left foot, dangling his slippers, saying, “Are casualties not allowed to have a little special treatment?â€
Tong-zi then said, “If I sprained my ankle, can I harvest a dormmate like this too?â€
Old Mao said, “Dream on.â€
Jiang Tian was holding on to these scripts, when he passed by he gave them a smack each before sitting down by the table. He started a timer and said, “Any more bullshit and you can go back to write it yourselves.â€
The two instantly chickened out. “Zipping it now, not talking any more.â€
Overall, the entirety of year two roughly made the same amount of progress on the syllabus, but different classes went in-depth at different levels. Therefore, Class A’s papers overlapped with Old Mao and Tong-zi’s homework in a few parts, which was why they came over to mooch—
What if—no, wait—they definitely didn’t know how to do the last two questions, they could borrow the two top students’ papers for a look when they get to it. With these two’s support, they shouldn’t be in too much pain.
However, they soon found out, they were wrong, ridiculously wrong!
When Jiang Tian was setting the countdown timer, he tapped the screen. Sheng Wang took a look, and changed the two hours to one and a half.
Tong-zi and Old Mao wistfully exclaimed, that top students are top students after all; they had the exam mindset when doing their papers on a usual basis, they even followed exam timings.
The chemistry exam lasts for 1h40min, roughly the same time as this. Therefore, the two tacitly whipped out the chemistry paper, only to discover Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian took out math instead.
Tong-zi looked at Old Mao, his head full of question marks, and then hurriedly changed his paper to the math paper.
Next, the everlasting torture began.
Around 1h15min, when Old Mao and Tong-zi only reached the first part of the third major question, Jiang Tian had already put down his pen.
He gave the paper a scan as he squeezed his finger joints, and used the tip of his fingers to tap on the table.
Tong-zi and Old Mao looked at him at the same time, their expressions a little distressed. Jiang Tian glanced at them, saying, “It has got nothing to do with you.â€
Tong-zi and Old Mao then buried themselves in their work again.
Sheng Wang had been playing deaf from the start to the end; Jiang Tian, unperturbed, placed the timer that he wouldn’t be using for the time being next to Sheng Wang’s hand.
Now, this was arrogant to the point of asking for a beating. Sheng Wang rolled his eyes, and dragged over a random book to cover up the timer, continuing to speedily write down the last formula.
The moment he started to hurry, his words grew wings and soared again.
Jiang Tian could see how ugly his handwriting was all the way from the other side of the table. He couldn’t help but remind, “Did you practise your handwriting for nothing?â€
Sheng Wang’s fingers paused, and slowed down with much reluctance, obediently finishing the last line. Upon settling his pen down he went to stop the timer. He checked, and he was slower than Jiang Tian by 10 minutes.
Sheng Wang was pissed to the point that he fell back against his chair. Several beats later, he pointed at Jiang Tian in fury, “You’re screwed up.â€
Jiang Tian didn’t lower himself to Sheng Wang’s level.
How this term affected him depended on people. If it came out from Shi Yu, it just seemed uninteresting. If it came out of Sheng Wang, however, it was especially delightful. The key was whether the person talking was capable enough.
“How much is there left?†After Sheng Wang scolded his ge, he finally remembered to show some concern for the lowest rung of citizens.
Yet, Tong-zi and Old Mao did not want concern to be shown to them. They were so stressed out that their face and neck were thoroughly flushed; in the end, two fingers were raised with a “There’s still two and a half questions left!â€
Jiang Tian didn’t appear to be convinced. “When I was done, you two were on the third question. You’re still on the third question?â€
Tong-zi looked up, Sheng Wang saw his indignant look, and decided to go muffle Jiang Tian.
“Don’t go around pissing people off, look at me.†He snapped his fingers at Jiang Tian, thus attracting his gaze. He pointed at the settings on the countdown, asking, “What do we do next?â€
“Aren’t there three math practice papers?†Jiang Tian said.
“Sure.†Sheng Wang restarted the timer with a new timing, took out a paper and began to write.
Tong-zi couldn’t understand them at all. “Wouldn’t you puke from doing three math assignments in a row?â€
“These two are still okay, one is fill in the blanks, the other one is the practice for annex questions,†Sheng Wang said, “they can be quickly done.â€
Tong-zi and Old Mao were stuck on the last two questions. For every single question, they tried at least five trains of thoughts, only to be met with a train crash halfway through. By the time they finally managed to figure out the first two parts of the second last question as well as the first part of the last question with much tediousness, the two top students had already completed the fill in the blanks practice, as well as half a page of the annex questions.
Old Mao faintly said, “I don’t know if they’re puking, but I already want to……â€
They borrowed Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian’s completed papers, and studied them for a while. By the time they completely understood, those two had also completed their annex questions.
“Are we continuing?†Tong-zi slumped over the table, asking while sounding like he’s on the verge of death.
Sheng Wang said, “Up to you guys, I guess? We definitely have to continue, there’s more than 30 papers…â€
Tong-zi clenched his jaws, saying, “Then let’s do another chem paper.â€
He internally said, chemistry is just a total of 1h4omin, that’s all. How big can their difference get? Furthermore, they were subject reps for chemistry in their class, they were pretty decent for this subject.
This time round, Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian didn’t cause any further blows, and obediently set the timer at 100 minutes. Tong-zi and Old Mao went on their way with much ease.
In the end, the instant the timer reached zero, the two of them both cursed, internally saying, to hell with ease!
The total time was 100 minutes, they did finish a chemistry paper in that time, that’s true, but Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang settled two……
They did know Class A were fast at doing questions, but in no freaking way did they think that they would be this fast!
The two initially wanted to bask in the glow of top students, but they basked in it until their mental defensive lines all collapsed. Tong-zi kept the papers with a few clean moves, cupped his fist at them, and said, “Farewell.â€
Sheng Wang didn’t know if he should laugh or cry. “You’re really leaving? Not doing your homework anymore?
Old Mao said, “We’re leaving, if we don’t, our lives will end here too.â€
The two ran away like they were escaping from famine, leaving Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian to look at each other in consternation.
Sheng Wang shook the English paper he just took out, and asked Jiang Tian, “Are we still continuing? You hungry yet?â€
“Not hungry, our breakfast was too late,†Jiang Tian said.
Sheng Wang used the joints of his finger to rub his nose, slightly sheepish. The reason why breakfast was late was because he played dead and tried to have a lie-in, no matter how Jiang Tian dug him out he refused to get up. Somehow, he managed to resume his sleep on his stomach, by the time he opened his eyes it was nearly 10am.
“Then, let us do English before we find food to eat?†he asked, probing out.
Jiang Tian nodded and said, sure.
Now that the masses who were butting in had just left, Sheng Wang didn’t bother setting a countdown anymore. He was already at roughly the same speed as Jiang Tian, they could only go faster and faster, no slowing down subconsciously.
He glimpsed at the starting time, and began writing.
There was no suspense as to the outcome for English, he finished it earlier than Jiang Tian, recovering from the loss for math last time round. If what Jiang Tian did by putting the phone screen next to him was the subtle form of being extra, then he was being obviously extra.
He copied Jiang Tian by using his fingers to tap on the table. The person opposite didn’t even look up. His fingers mimicked the motion of walking, crawling forward on the table for a distance, and then knocked a few more times.
Jiang Tian continued to not pay any heed.
Sheng Wang’s finger crawled on forward again, and went straight to pressing the paper opposite down, knocking quite a few times. If he could still ignore this form of harassment, then he must be truly blind.
Jiang Tian finally reacted.
With his right hand not stopping, still filling in the MCQ, his left hand pushed away Sheng Wang’s meddling fingers. After not budging despite two pushes, he simply covered up that entire hand with his.
Sheng Wang blanked out.
Jiang Tian’s palm enveloped the back of his hand, his long digits resting on his wrist bone, cooling to the touch.
His eyes were lowered as he looked at that hand, the mirth at the corner of his lips slowly dimming away. The touch on his skin suddenly became much more sensitive. He subconsciously wanted to whisk his hand back, but out of some mysterious mindset, he didn’t move at all.
Jiang Tian seemed to have noticed that split second of peculiarity; Sheng Wang saw his pen briefly pause, and his gaze sweeping over from the end of his eyes, seemingly looking at their hands.
For that couple of seconds, he didn’t move either.
Yet another beat, he removed his hand like he just came back to himself.
With a hand squeezing the joints of his fingers, he settled down his pen as he said, “I’m done writing.â€
TO BE CONTINUED.
