I slept in Keagan’s bed with him that night but slept is a bit of an over-exaggeration. He slept and I stayed up all night worrying.

My thoughts were consistent. Lukas.

What if he found me? What if he’s angry I ran from him? Who am I kidding, of course he’s angry. His mate just ran from him. His reputation doesn’t have room for problematic mates that run from him, tail between their legs.

My wolf was aching and whining.

7am finally rolled around and my alarm broke the silence. Keagan groaned as he woke up and I turned the alarm off.

“Rise and shine, sweetie,” I teased and got up to turn the light on.

“I don’t have plans today why do I have to be up right now,” he whined.

“Lucky you, you get to come to my house with me to get my stuff. I doubt he stayed there all night, but I’m not taking chances.”

He complained his way through his morning routine and made sure I knew he didn’t want to be awake.

He didn’t bother to get dressed and just brushed his teeth and put his shoes on.

Keagan drove me home because I ran here instead of driving and I don’t feel like running right now.

I hurried inside and checked just to make sure he still wasn’t in my house. After I cleared it, I got ready. I put on the ugly uniform that I had to wear for my job at a convenience store and threw a bunch of clothes into a duffel bag.

I grabbed my toiletries and shoved them into the bag. I then checked my soccer bag and made sure I had everything I needed.

Today’s training was just a sprint workout and stretching. We do training sessions every Sunday aside from our Monday-Friday practices.

They are technically optional but everyone knows when a coach says optional, it’s not really optional.

Plus training is way easier and chill than practice so what’s the point of not going.

We also had a game coming up on Tuesday and I’d rather not be benched because we are playing last years state champions.

We lost to them in the championships and took our place as second. Second isn’t good enough for me, I want to be first.

I’ve been training overload for this and perfected my footwork. If I’m going to do something, I might as well be the best at it.

That’s how I landed my spot on Varsity as a freshmen and sophomore.

I carried all my stuff outside and dumped it into the back of my car. Keagan saw that I successfully got in and out of my house and waved before pulling out of the driveway and going home.

I got in and started driving towards the gates and stopped to talk to Alec.

“Alec, if anyone asks tonight, I came home right after soccer and you saw me,” I tell him and he laughed at me.

“Don’t do anything dumb, Grayson. I know that’s a lot for you to handle.”

“Thanks bro, I owe you,” I grinned and drove through the gates.

I heard him grumble about me never paying him back but decided to ignore him.

My work was about 10 minutes off of pack territory and in the human town. The town was on the nicer side and the store I worked at didn’t really suck that much.

I pulled up at the store at 7:55 and unlocked the door. I let myself in and locked the door again behind me. The store doesn’t open until 9:00 so I have an hour to get everything ready for the day.

The store is small so it doesn’t take long but it also means I’m the only one working today. Sometimes, I have another person but that doesn’t happen often.

I finish setting up and flip the sign to open. Now I wait.

*****

Time was passing slowly and the store was a ghost town. There has only been 5 people here all day and it’s already noon.

I spin around in my chair and continue to text Keagan.

Keagan
what about the hampton? you can afford that for a few nights?

Grayson
yeah that works
can u book it for me? my service in here sucks

Keagan
yuh
uhm
fuck
grayson

Grayson
what?

Keagan
your not-so-little alpha mate is in front of my house

Grayson
wtf why
hide or something

Keagan
bro i literally can’t
he saw me looking through the window
uhm he’s coming to the door
brb

I stared at the text he sent me. Why is he bothering Keagan?

I waited for his response and nerves filled my stomach, making me feel sick. What if he hurts Keagan? Threatens him?

2 minutes had barely passed before my phone started ringing.

*Incoming call—Keagan Haiden*

“Keagan, what’s happening?”

“Hello, Grayson.”

The voice that came from the other side was not Keagan’s. The voice was deep and sent chills down my spine. The voice was the voice of Alpha Lukas.

“A-Alpha Lukas,” I swallowed,”why do you have Keagan’s phone.”

“I needed a way to contact you but that’s a story for another time. Also, Lukas is fine. You’re my mate, you don’t need to call me by my Alpha title.”

“Anyways, Alpha Lukas, why do you need to contact me,” I didn’t drop the Alpha title and I won’t.

I don’t want a mate.

He sighed but responded, “Where are you? We have things to discuss.”

“Sucks, ’cause I’m busy today.”

“Where. Are. You?” His voice was more serious now.

“None. Of. Your. Buisness,” I mocked his tone and hung up.

Stupid Alpha.

He called again but ignored him. The calls stopped after twice of me not answering.

I waited a few minutes then texted Keagan.

Grayson
is he still there?

It took him a few minutes to reply but when he finally did I was relieved.

Keagan
he just left

My relief was short lived when I saw the next text.

Keagan
he went to go ask Alpha Quinn where you are

Fuck.

Of course Alpha Quinn is going to tell him. He has no reason to hide anything from Alpha Lukas. If anything, he’ll probably give him my whole file, no questions asked.

I groaned and looked at the clock again.

Let’s just hope that he doesn’t get here before 2:00, because then my shift will be over and I can leave.

The time was 12:30 so the odds were not in my favor but I still had hope.

A few more costumers filtered into the store and I busied myself by helping them, asking constantly if they need help.

They left as fast as they came and 20 minutes rolled by.

As time grew longer since the call, the more my stomach aches and turned. It was only a matter of minutes before I was faced with my curse.

As if fate read my mind, a silver rental truck pulled up outside the store.

The truck of Alpha Lukas.
