Shinobu POV
There was no denying the irritation I felt whenever y/n showed up. It wasn’t even that he was a horrible person or anything. In fact my problem with him was that he was too kind and alluring for his own good, and my sister’s. If there was a polite knock on the door, I internally groaned knowing who it was waiting patiently on the other side. It wasn’t a secret who he waited for either as he smiled whenever the door was opened for him.
I didn’t like how he made my sister act. Kanae was usually level headed and down to earth but when y/n came around, she would practically float as if walking on clouds. Her smiles would be warmer and more permanent, never faltering whenever she saw y/n. They both were strong warriors with unwavering convictions and confidence but if you put them in the same room, they’d become mushy, flustered kids who couldn’t seem to manage their own emotions.
“Can you get the door Shinobu? I’ve gotta grab something real quick,” Kanae’s voice called out from the other room, the sound of anxious shuffling echoing through the walls. I frowned at her ridiculous nervousness for yet another day out with y/n. She’s hung out with him so long now, I was annoyed that she still acted like this. You’d think it was the first date ever with the way she would perfect everything about herself.
Grumbling to myself, I made my way to the door where another round of soft knocking sounded. Even the way he pounded against a door was soft and polite. I decided to be petty and wait an extra minute before opening the door to find y/n smiling brightly. His lips didn’t even falter as he realized it wasn’t Kanae who answered. He merely bowed respectfully, looking up at me through love glazed eyes. The sight might’ve made someone blush if they happened to not be so annoyed with him.
“Good evening, Shinobu! I was hoping I’d run into you. This is for you,” y/n stated warmly, handing me a small box. Confusion numbed my irritation momentarily as I held the mysterious object. It wasn’t often that y/n came here for me. He usually just picked up Kanae and they went out into town or the meadow. I was definitely caught by surprise by the attention, let alone the gift. I could barely process the way y/n had straightened up to watch me eagerly with my eyes focused solely on the box.
“What is this for? I thought you were taking Kanae out today,” I asked, eyeing him suspiciously. Y/n only smiled back at me. Of course someone like him wouldn’t plan anything sinister but he was obviously up to something. I had a brief moment of shock as a theory popped into my head. I tried to shake the idea away but it had already stuck as the idea of rings and wedding bells echoed in my head. This could be a gift to ask for her hand.
I glared at y/n and the audacity he had to propose so soon. Flipping open the box however, I was once again confused to find a beautiful butterfly brooch. The jewels inlaid in its wings sparkled beautifully in the sunlight. I took a sharp inhale, one of my hands moving to cover my racing heart. Even though it was gorgeous, it didn’t seem to fit my sister very well and I was about to tell him so when he started to laugh softly.
“I’m still taking Kanae out but this is for you. Consider it a peace offering. I know you don’t like me too much but I really love your sister. I want to take things slow with her of course but I also want you to be comfortable. She’s your sister, I’m aware of that and I never want to pull you two apart,” y/n nodded humbly, watching me with shining eyes. I felt myself soften towards him instantly. I knew deep down that he loved her and I trusted that he would be able to take care of her one day. It still hurt to think my sister would eventually be with him but I respected y/n enough to be okay with it one day.
“Hey y/n! Shinobu that looks so pretty, it fits you perfectly,” Kanae came up behind me, flashing y/n a dazzling smile before her hand rested on my head lovingly. I felt myself warm as I leaned into her affectionate touch, watching y/n’s whole demeanor brighten. I lifted the brooch from the box to pin it on my haori with a smile. Kanae leaned down to place a gentle kiss on my cheek before she reached out for y/n who gingerly took her arm. I didn’t even feel a bit of disappointment, seeing the love in their eyes as they looked at each other.
“I hope you two have a great evening. I’ll be here when you get back Kanae,” I smiled, my fingers brushing the butterfly brooch near my heart. Kanae seemed a bit surprised by my words but in the end her eyes softened before she scooped me up into a hug that made my whole body warm. Y/n waved at me cheerily, pulling Kanae against his side where she seemed to fit best. It still made me a bit sad to think that Kanae would eventually leave me but I could tell in the way y/n held her carefully and Kanae looked at him longingly that everything would work out for the best between them. They belonged together and I was going to be okay with that.
