Chapter 32: WHAT A DUMB THING TO FIGHT OVER

Alex’s POV:

*****************************

“Oh my god! I’m so happy for you I’m going to cry…” Kate exclaimed as she jumped up and covered her mouth with her hands pretending to tear up.

I was back home and back to work and things have gone back to normal, most things.

I told Kate all about Paris and how beautiful it is, but she’s just hung up on one fact, like she couldn’t see anything further then that.

“Of course he kissed you in the rain, I should have guessed it already, he’s crazy about you!” She continued jumping. It’s been going on since eight dreadful minutes and she doesn’t seem to be in a mood to stop anytime soon.

We had talked everyday through texts while I was in Paris but I didn’t dare tell her every detail. She seemed pretty pissed off about it at first, being the hothead that she is, but I’ve managed to cool her down, and finally she somehow resembles the closest thing to a cucumber.

But it seems my groveling has gone to waste, cause now she’s again behaving like a teenager who had popped one too many antidepressants with an overdose of coffee. Yeah, that sounds about right.

“So, did you guys like…..smash?” She asked, making me turn red instantly.

“No damn it, Shut up! Stop making it sound gross.” I shushed her.

“But you had a whole trip…” She complained.

“Keep it down will you? I don’t want rumours going around in the office!” I scolded.

“Well, it’s too late for that, the way you two look at each other, you might as well tattoo ‘Lovesick’ on your faces.” She turned around and walked out of the room with the files she was supposed to bring. I blinked and then forced myself to snap out of it.

I looked at the new files that came to sit on my desk and dove headfirst into my growing pile of work, forgetting about everything else.

My phone buzzed with a message from my mom. It was another reminder. She had practically demanded my presence at home tonight for dinner because Kyle and Sam were coming too. I had no choice but to go to my parents home tonight.

But at work I had a lot of catching up to do because of the trip and because I took a sick leave yesterday… I was terribly tired after the business trip. It made me smile when Jensen called yesterday and worried over me.

Maybe I should go see what he’s up to. I picked up the file with the latest sales figures as an ‘excuse’ and made my way towards his office and knocked before pushing the door open.

“It would be hard to recover from, I’m telling you…” Josh’s voice said.

I entered and both sets of eyes turned to look at me. “Hey Alex…” Josh greeted me with a smile and I returned the gesture. It was like an unofficial meeting was going on and I found that odd.

The aura inside the room was very serious, I didn’t realize what was going on, but I tried to ignore the tension and speak normally.

“Josh, long time…” I acknowledged. “What have you been up to?”

“Nothing much, just stirring trouble every now and then.” He joked. I waited for them to tell me but they didn’t acknowledge what was happening there before I walked in.

Why aren’t they telling me what’s this about? I always know everything… or so I thought.

“You need something?” Jensen asked, a bright smile suddenly gracing his face, pulling my attention towards him.

“Not really, I just dropped by to give you this.” I said gesturing at the file in my hand. I kept it on his table.

Josh scoffed. “That’s not a very good excuse to come here, should I leave, give you two some privacy?”

Of course he knows.

“It’s not an excuse.” I lied, and hoped my face didn’t give away my embarrassment. The way he said that… he made it all seem scandalous and clandestine, which was not true.

Jensen chuckled at the exchange. “I’ll look at it later…” He said. “You can leave it here.” I could tell it was a dismissal

He turned to talk to Josh. “It’s the only thing he has control over Josh, he’s not going to give it up so easily.”

“I don’t know man, he can pull a stunt like this, he’s done it before… ” I heard Josh say. What were they even talking about? Despite wanting to eavesdrop, I walked back to my office with numerous thoughts in my mind.

I looked at my computer screen and decided to pay attention to work. It kept my mind busy which helped because I wasn’t left thinking and overthinking about anything and everything.

When lunch time arrived, I saw Josh leaving, he didn’t come say goodbye to me like he always does and I decided to ask Jensen what was going on earlier. I walked to his office and knocked before entering.

He looked at me from behind his desk, and smiled tiredly. “I didn’t get a chance to look at it.” Jensen said, pointing at the file I left there earlier.

I shrugged, “That’s okay, it’s not very urgent, I didn’t come here for that.”

“You didn’t?” He raised a brow as I walked closer to the desk and stood leaning against it while facing him.

I had to roll my eyes, “get your mind out of the gutter.”

“Hey, you insinuated.” He protested and I chuckled.

“Okay, while that might have sounded differently, I just meant to ask, Josh seemed very serious today? Something wrong?” I asked clearly.

The sudden shift happened very subtly.
I could almost see him put up all those walls that I’ve torn down since months.

He sounded a lot more reserved, while he tried to act nonchalant. “Nothing wrong? Why would you think that?”

“It’s just, you both seemed very serious when I came in earlier and something just seemed off.” I told him honestly, hoping he would be honest with me too.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about.” He said with a forced smile before swiftly changing the subject, “Should we go grab something to eat?”

I frowned at the shift, but for now decided to go with it. “Okay” I nodded and tried smiling instead.

After a brief lunch I was going through the architectural work and finances of our new Ziemann project when Nick knocked on my door and I smiled up at him, he walked in casually and then raised an eyebrow at the paperwork in front of me.

“Don’t ask…” I muttered.

“Did you really lose track of time or have I walked into a parallel universe?” He asked, clearly amused.

My eye quickly darted to my wrist watch and  widened. Eight fifteen.

The day seemed like it ended too soon, is this what it feels to be a workaholic?

“I’m not done yet, but don’t wait up, you should go, I won’t stay for long.” I said to Nick and focused back on the new updated contract papers.

Nick seemed reluctant, he wanted to help me with the work but since I dismissed him, he lingered in the doorway “You sure?”

“Yeah, positive” I gave him an all-good thumbs up, and then he left muttering a “Good night Alex.”

After I finished leafing through the contract, I closed the file and shut my eyes to rest them for a bit, as I already felt the after effects of working nonstop the whole day.

I checked the time. Nine five. My eyes widened in shock, where did the time go?

Working extra time is not my thing, my family might be waiting for the ransom calls, expecting me to be kidnapped or something.

Grabbing my coat, purse and keys, I walked out of my office and the automatic lights flickered off.

“You’re still here?” said a familiar voice and I turned to face Jensen.

For a moment I just looked at him. He wasn’t so put together at this hour, but still looked just as handsome with his disheveled hair, even if he seemed a little tired.

“Yes, as much as you are” I answered flatly and walked past him, he grabbed my hand and stopped me. I refused to look at him.

“You’re mad.” It wasn’t a question.

“I didn’t know you could be so perceptive.” I said.

“What’s wrong?” He asked. I could have just told him what was ‘wrong’ but last time I tried it didn’t work out so well, so I held back, maybe I’m just overreacting.

“Nothing. I’m just tired.” I said instead.

Jensen regarded me with curiosity and said, “You must think I’m an absolute fool if you’re giving me that excuse.”

I turned to look at him and found his concerned gaze.

“Now, are you going to tell me what really happened, or you gonna try another lie?” He mused.

“Can I try my hand at another lie?” I joked.

“Only if you tell me the truth after all.” He smiled a tired smile.

I rolled my eyes at that, “It’s not a game of ‘two truths and a lie’.”

“What a shame… I thought we could make this interesting while we are at it.” He took a step closer, but I stepped away.

“It’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” I said and pretended that everything is normal as I walked in the direction of the elevators.

He followed as we walked in the same direction and thankfully dropped the matter.

“Was there too much paperwork?” He asked.

“Yeah.” I mumbled.

“Never thought I would see this day.” He said, clearly indicating my new development of working late.

“Neither did I, but here we are…” I smiled, and joked “maybe I caught the workaholic’s syndrome, you might be contagious.”

“You make it sound like a bad thing.” We both walked up to the elevator and he pressed the button, I played with my keys, as I tossed them up and caught them in my palm.

“Is it not?” I said, in a-matter-of-fact tone.

He didn’t say anything, just shook his head at my words, silently disagreeing.

The elevator dinged open and I stepped in while throwing my set of keys in the air just to miss the lamest catch in the entire human history, and helplessly watched in horror as my keys fell through the gap and into the elevator shaft.

“Shit!” I cursed.

Jensen saw the whole debacle unfold as he too stepped in and then the doors of the elevators closed in front of my pale face.

I wishfully look at the small gap that disappears from my sight “my keys”.

“That was… unfortunate”  he said, looking amused like he was trying not to laugh in my face.

You think?!

Great, just fantastic! Why does it happen to me all the time? I just have to go and humiliate myself in front of him every single chance I get, right?

Why am I so stupid?

“Is there some way to retrieve them?” I turned to Jensen, with a hopeful look.

He thought for a second “Probably…” and I smiled but he quickly crushed my hopes with his next words “but you can’t look for them now, we’ll figure it out tomorrow.”

My smile falters but I nod “I guess you’re right”. It was very late and dark, no point in looking for them now.

We both step out of the elevator and walk towards the entry and exit doors of the building.

I lost my car keys, how will I get home? We got to the parking lot and stopped at my car, I looked at my car hopelessly “how am I getting home?” I asked, to no one in particular. One thing I was sure about, that I wasn’t gonna ask Jensen to give me a ride. No way. Even though I said differently, I was kinda mad.

I shrugged, sighing “guess I’m talking a cab today.”

“This news about a psychopath cab driver stabbing his passengers came up a few days ago, you’re aware right?” Jensen asked nonchalantly, as if he was talking about the weather.

What?!
My eyes widened and I silently gulped.

“Oh ye-yes… I’m aware. I meant the bus, I’m taking the bus” I nodded and brushed off his words.

“Okay, then you might also be aware of this news from the other day when some thugs hijacked a moving bus and robbed the passengers and all…” he nods to himself.

When did that happen? Haven’t heard anything like that in the news, but then again I never watch news.

“I’ll just…. I’ll use the subway” I decided.

“You know about that train which recently moved off the tracks and crashed right… talk about a train wreck” he spoke with neutrality.

What the hell?!

Jensen was definitely being weird, and I fixed him with a sharp look.

“I’m just saying…” he said, like that explains everything.

I scoffed “Alright, what are you up to?” My voice was stern as I looked into his eyes.

“What? I’m just informing you about the daily happenings in our city, you know… awareness is never a bad thing.” He shrugged, and stuffed his hands in his pant pockets.

“I see…” I mumbled, not buying his act of indifference.

I pulled out my phone and looked through the contacts.

“What are you doing?” Jensen asked.

“I’m calling Ben.” I told him as I held my phone to my ear.

“Who’s Ben?” He frowned.

Why in the world does it matter to him? I couldn’t understand his random curiosity, but replied anyway “My dad’s driver.”

He relaxed, as if I eased his stress somehow. Wait- was he jealous? “There’s no need for that” he came forward, pulled my phone out of my hand and disconnected the call.

What the…?!

“You can ask me to drop you home you know… I’m right here.” He said.

I was suddenly mad, and everything that I was holding back sort of came bubbling out “Give me my phone back.”

“There’s no need to call anyone” he says calmly.

“I’d rather walk.” I glared at him.

“Alex, come-on get in the car I’ll drop you, you don’t need to call for a driver.”

“That’s for me to decide!” My voice was turning angrier with the moment but Jensen almost looked oblivious to that until he met my anger evenly.

“I can drive you home!” his voice rose too, talking over me, and I froze.

I wasn’t exactly avoiding him today after lunch, but I also wasn’t enthralled to see him. When I went to see him this morning, the atmosphere I was met with unsettled me.

“No thank you” I told him. I would have taken his offer if he had said it nicely, but it didn’t sound like an offer to me.

“I wasn’t asking” He informed, which was already pretty clear from his commanding voice.

Too bad, I wasn’t intimidated, my eyes looked up at him defiantly, and then I said “my phone please?”

He didn’t give it to me, instead he dropped it into his pocket and said “No.”

What the hell! Even I could see that this was incredibly childish.

His hand came out with his car keys and he pressed the button to unlock it from a distance.

“Just get in the car Alex, you’re wasting time” he looked angry now, words cutting and eyes cold.

What is his freaking problem? Can’t he see that we are literally fighting over nothing. This was us, when we first met and all… arguing and yelling at each other just because we can.

The thought upset me. “Give me back my phone and I’ll be out of your hair in a flash”

“Why are you so stubborn?” He was frowning. “Just please, get in the car already…”

Huffing, I walked to his car, got in the passenger seat and buckled up. “I need to go to my parents house today.”

He took the wheel and soon we were on the road, with the city traffic.

The car ride was filled with silence, I didn’t speak a word and when he tried, I didn’t reply except for when he asked for directions.

When we stopped at a red light, I could feel Jensen’s eyes on me, but I didn’t lift my gaze to him. Not once.

“Why were you ignoring me today?” He asked. Oh so he noticed. That lunch with him was uncomfortable because I couldn’t stop thinking about why he was being so different and I stayed away from him for the rest of the day, whenever I saw him coming I walked the other way.

“Why is it that you don’t want to spend even a minute in my company?”

There was only silence on my side.

“Can you please tell me what’s wrong so that I can make it right?” He said.

“What were you and Josh talking about this morning?” I asked again.

The silence came back, and the lights turned green, he started driving again.

“It-uh-It’s nothing you need to worry about.” He said, not answering my question, I scoffed. Maybe I knew this was the answer I’ll get, maybe I didn’t wanna deal with it, but now it’s too late. He didn’t even give me a reason why it wasn’t something I should know.

“I could tell it was about some business deal and I have every right to know what goes on in this company when I’m making decisions about it.” I argued.

“Please can we drop it!” His voice shook. I looked at him with barely concealed surprise.

The atmosphere was tense and I was only just staring out the window with various thoughts in my mind. Josh didn’t even come to talk to me today, he does that every time he visits.

“We’re here” Jensen spoke, making me realise that the car had stopped moving and my parents house was right there in front.

I unbuckled my seatbelt, pulled my bag strap on my shoulder, got out of the car, and closed the door normally, not acting on my anger. I turned my back to leave without a thank-you or even meeting his eyes.

I didn’t care if I was being rude, that’s exactly what I was aiming for. Once in a while he should get the taste of his own medicine.

I don’t know when or how he got there so fast but so he was standing right next to me “Alex wait!”

I didn’t.

I was absolutely livid and determined to just walk away without considering his request, but out of nowhere he stepped in front of me, I stumbled but didn’t fall and he gently pulled me upright against his car and came to stand in front of me blocking my path.

His eyes were downcast and remorseful as he looked at me.

I could have just stepped aside and got away, I knew he wouldn’t have stopped me the second time, but I didn’t, I stood where I was and hesitantly met his stormy grey eyes.

“I- I didn’t… mean to make you mad” he said. “I don’t know why, but when it comes to you I say and do some things which I cant even explain to myself.”

“Forget it.” I was too tired at this point. If he doesn’t want to tell me I could live with not knowing.

“No you’re right, you have every right to know what goes on in this company, I don’t know what I was thinking…, it’s just that- it’s hard for me to talk about it, I just….” He looked vulnerable, frustrated and angry at himself as he ran his fingers through his dark hair and looked at me ardently. “I’m sorry…. Please forgive me?”

I could see that whatever might have happened, he held himself responsible it. “I’ve ruined enough things, I don’t want to mess this up…” he reached for my hand, intertwining our fingers together gently.

Everyone has something they find hard to share, maybe a mistake or a weakness or something else and maybe this was his. Maybe I unknowingly agitated him by being insistent, but was it so wrong that I wanted to help….?

My gaze softened, “What was it even about?” I decided I would only ask him this for the last time and if he’s uncomfortable I’ll just have to wait for him to tell me at his own time. He looked so stressed today, it couldn’t be something nice.

“It’s about Carson.” He said, and sighed in frustration “He’s threatening to sell the Davis psychiatric speciality centers if I don’t give him the rights for Celestrium.”

Davis psychiatric speciality centers? Those were the mental health institutions all over the state. “What does it have to do with us tho-?” He sighed, as if to prepare himself.

“Davis is my mom’s maiden name and she’s a psychiatrist, she started those speciality centers but she had to sell them to Carson’s father when my dad was in the hospital from cancer and we were in debt.” He explained. “Carson hates me because I started from nothing but I’m doing better than him in business and most of his clients came to us after the business took off…”

“I wondered why Carson seemed to have a vendetta against you…” I spoke my thoughts.

“That he does, but it’s okay I’ll deal with him, he’s always trying to provoke me, nothing’s new….” Jensen said.

“You can’t just do everything on your own, you should tell me, you know you can tell me anything right?” I asked and he cracked a small smile.

“I know, and I wanted to include you but you were stressed, you already have a lot on your plate I didn’t want to add more problems.” He reasoned.

“Next time, you are discussing every little thing with me. I don’t care what or how insignificant, I wanna know.” I warned. “I don’t care what I’m dealing with, you can always depend on me, we’ll figure something out together, okay?” He nodded with eyes filled with adoration.

“Gosh you’re stubborn.” He said, but this time with a smile.

“Okay?” I repeated.

He just looked at me for a minute with growing amusement in his eyes, he did not say a word and then broke the silence with a chuckle. “Okay. Got it! And you shouldn’t avoid me, I’m sorry about lunch, I ruined it for you.”

“It’s alright… ” I mumbled, “you seemed stressed.”

“I don’t know if it makes any sense, but I missed you today.” He admitted. It made complete sense.

I smiled.

“You wanna know what I’m planning to do next?” He asked, leaning in closer.

“What?” I repeated.

“I plan to kiss you…” He mused.

“So why don’t you?” I raised an eyebrow as if to challenge him.

He smiled and did exactly what he said he would.

******************************

After pressing the doorbell, I waited for someone to open the door. Jensen then drove away. I could still feel my lips tingling from his kiss.

When the taillights disappeared from my sight, I looked down at my phone which he finally returned and apologised profusely for taking it in the first place…I smiled at the turn of events.

Was this our first fight? Wow. What a dumb thing to fight over.

Mary opened the door for me and I walked in after greeting her happily. My eyes widened in surprise to see Kyle in the living room.

“What’s up dimwit? What are you doing here?” I asked.

Kyle was busy with another one of his movies so he hardly ever showed up for family dinners. Today was obviously different.

“What? I can’t come to visit once in a while?” He tried being all innocent but I knew him well. He’s a guy, he knows he’s handsome, plus he’s a professional actor. Never trust such a combo.

I rolled my eyes “You just missed Mom’s cooking.” Even though mom is a big event planner and all, she still likes to cook for us.

“I missed you too” yeah he’s mushy like that, so he pulled me closer and gave me a big warm bear hug. I missed him, but I wasn’t gonna tell him that so I just pretended to be irritated by his brotherly affections.

“Lexi you’re finally here…” Sam said and I pulled away from Kyle to look at him.

“Sammy, what the hell did you do to your hair?!” I yelled as soon as I looked at his chestnut brown hair that used to be black.

“What? You don’t like it?” He turned to glare at Kyle, “you said the ladies would love it!”

I laughed, “you look so stupid.”

“Thanks. Always what I wanted to hear from my fellow human beings.” He said sarcastically.

“It’s not that bad…” Kyle said looking at Sam’s hair skeptically.

“Of course you would say that. This was your dumb idea!” Sam accused. To be honest he pulled it off really well (once you got used to the change) besides, I just loved teasing him.

“By the way, you won’t believe what your brother did, he got himself a- gfffd frrfg” Sam’s words were cut off from Kyle’s hand slamming on his mouth.

“Shut your trap, I said I wanted to surprise her.” Kyle told his friend.

I heard the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen and became curious when I saw the fancy set of dinner dishes laid out on the dining table.

I turned to Kyle “what’s going on?”

“I have a surprise for you” he was smiling, in the you’re-gonna-love-it sort of way.

Last time he said that, it wasn’t a surprise…more like pure panic. He had closed my eyes and then switched off all the lights because he knew I was afraid of darkness. Next thing I know I was screaming and running around like a headless chicken searching for light switches. I was a teenager.

“If you are trying to pull something like last time, I swear I’ll rip you apart limb from limb and ship you off to Pluto” I threatened.

He pouted “That was years ago and I said I was sorry for that.”

“And I said you are not forgiven” yeah, he needs to grovel a little more.

“She’s never gonna forgive you bro…” Sam said as a word of advice.

He narrowed his eyes at our dramatics and dragged me towards the kitchen “come here, I want you to meet someone.”

Mom was wearing a beautiful brown dress, she stood at the pan, stirring something in it, but my eyes weren’t trained on her, there was this other woman standing next to mom, who turned to look at me when I entered with Kyle.

She was absolutely gorgeous, with sparking grey eyes, and dirty blonde hair falling down her shoulders in waves. Her black dress looked like it was made for her and she looked no less than a model.

Have I seen her before? Why does she look so familiar?

“You must be Alex.” She smiled, shifting from foot to foot.

“Jenny?!” I pointed at her and looked at Kyle, waiting for him to tell me I guessed right.

“You know it” he confirms with a smile.

According to what Kyle had told me she’s a fashion designer and she definitely looked the part.

“Oh my god! You’re just like how Kyle described you.” I grinned in excitement and moved forward to hug her, she hugged me back with the same excitement. Normally I wouldn’t hug someone I just met, but there was something about her that made me act this way.

I could see why Kyle was lovesick and why mom has been singing praises about Kyle’s girlfriend. Apparently when I was in Paris for my business trip, Jenny met mom and from that day onwards it had been…. Jenny this, Jenny that, as if hearing it from Kyle was not enough.

Jenny was sweet, her smile was genuine and her warmth couldn’t have been faked, she seemed like a good improvement from Kyle’s past girlfriends.

I pulled away from Jenny and then turned to Kyle “She’s out of your league bro.”

“I already told him that.” Sam smiled at me while Kyle glared at him. Jenny laughed as Kyle pouted, but I could see that his eyes agreed with me.

“How long have you been dating him?” I asked her.

“We were just friends for a few years, but we just started dating since the last four months. ” she told me.

“Four months!” I looked at Kyle angrily “And you tell me now?”

“We wanted to keep it low-key, plus you are so busy these days, and then the whole thing about us dating was the big news, so I couldn’t tell you” Kyle made excuses.

“Oh lord, that was horrific let’s not bring that up” I groaned, “but you’re just making excuses…”

Then I looked at Jenny “seriously, what do you even see in him?”

“Don’t know… I don’t understand it myself” she pretended to agree with me to irritate Kyle.

“You love me…” Kyle was pouting at Jenny and she walked to his side and kissed his cheek, he smiled, wrapping an arm around her waist.

I retrieved my eyes from the love birds, to look at Sam and we were both thinking the same thing. Ewww.

“Why did you come home so late?” Mom asked me, and I looked at her. She was frowning in a typical worried mom way.

“It was nothing Mom… got caught up in work” I told her, and that’s when dad entered, catching the last of my words, so now the whole family was having a mini meet-and-greet in the kitchen.

“You fell asleep didn’t you?” Dad asked me, laughingly. Wow! My dad has so much faith in me.

“I was actually working…. thank-you very much!” I defended myself.

I realized everyone was dressed up in semi-formal wear, except for me. Definitely my mom’s doing.

Please don’t tell me to go change.

I was giving my mother puppy eyes and I can see that she was caving in.
Yay! Go, my irresistible puppy eyes!

“Fine…just freshen up and join us at the table, everyone was waiting for you.” She told me.

“I wasn’t” My brother interjects “I was just starving.”

Resisting the urge to smack him with the nearby wooden spoon, I glared at him and walked out.

I splashed water on my tired face and tamed my hair and then came back downstairs for dinner.

We all settled and then Mary served the amazing smelling food. Yum!

“I think we should talk about our day and start dinner with the crumble cake for once” dad suddenly suggested.

My fork paused right in front of my mouth and I stared at dad, almost weirded out by his suggestion.

What?!

Kyle, Sam and I cluelessly looked at each other.

What’s going on?

I have no idea. Sam shrugged.

Kyle widened his eyes at me. Old man is finally going cray-cray?

We all then turned to look at dad with utter confusion, he might have hit his head or something.

“That’s dessert Rick, please follow the order…” Mom said and although it sounded like a request it was a command.

“What’s the point of living…?” He mumbled under his breath.

When mom cleared her throat, he quickly amended.

“I’m kidding you all…just dig in” dad laughed awkwardly, finding it oh so hilarious. Ha ha very funny.

Sam caught my eye and smirked. It was clear, dad was in trouble for something he did… again.

I thought it would be really awkward with Sam because of what happened last time, but it didn’t seem all that bad. I hope he’s really fine and not putting up a front.

Knowing him he’s probably not as fine as he tries to pretend. There were times when he opened up only to me because no one else heard him out, no one else understood. I know that because I do the same with him.

But right now it was different, he couldn’t talk to me if something was wrong. Not if it was wrong because of me.

God, I was a terrible friend.

I spent the entire evening trying to read Sam, but either he was totally fine or he was better at putting up a front than I thought. I wished it wasn’t the latter.

The evening seemed to move quickly as we all ate mom’s amazing cooking, talked, laughed at dad’s lame jokes and got to know more about Jenny.

She was perfect for Kyle, but there was this nagging thought at the back of my mind that I was missing something.

I’m probably just being paranoid.
