You read the name on the notification
Beck.
He texted her right when she pulled up at her house.
You sat there, waiting for Jade to grab her phone, but she didn’t.
Instead, she stared at it, her expression unreadable, and then looked over at you.
“What are you waiting for?” you asked, trying to keep your tone light even when you could feel the weight on your chest.
“Go see what he texted you.”
She hesitated, her fingers hovering above the phone before she finally picked it up and unlocked it.
You studied her face intently as she scrolled and tapped around, her expression unreadable as she read the message.
“Oh,” she said finally, her voice flat.
You couldn’t tell what this reaction meant.
Was it good? Was it bad?
And then you realized, what would be good for her would be terrible for you.
“What?” you asked, trying to keep the anxiety out of your voice.
“He said that he wants to talk to me,” she replied, her tone neutral, almost detached.
“That’s all he said? Nothing else?” you asked, surprised and more than a little sceptical.
She turned the phone toward you, showing you the screen.
And that was indeed all he said.
The message was brief, but it carried the weight of something much heavier.
You knew what he meant by this, and it wasn’t positive for you.
Your heart dropped a little, the reality of the situation settling in like a cold weight in your stomach.
Jealousy and sadness welled up inside you, emotions you hadn’t expected to feel so strongly.
You knew this had been the plan all along, for Jade to get Beck back, but when you’d started this, you hadn’t expected to grow this attached to her. You hadn’t expected to care this much.
Maybe it was better that it ended here, you thought.
Better to cut it off now before it hurt even more later.
But even as you tried to rationalize it, you wished the text had never come.
You weren’t ready for this to end.
“Oh,” was all you could mutter, your voice barely above a whisper.
Jade looked at you, her gaze searching your face as if trying to read your thoughts.
But you were too lost in your own sadness to notice.
“I’ll text him back later,” she said, breaking the silence. “I don’t know what he wants to talk to me about. But regardless, I still want to hang out with you right now.”
Her words confused you. Did she not care about Beck anymore?
Why wasn’t she eager to text him back, to see what he wanted?
Maybe you were just overthinking it, letting your fears cloud your judgment.
“Yeah, let’s go,” you said, forcing a smile that you hoped would convince her, if not yourself.
Jade jumped out of the car and walked around to your side, opening the door for you.
It was one of the many things she did that you loved, a small gesture that made you feel cared for, even if it was just a habit.
As the door opened, fresh air filled your lungs, calming you a bit. You realized that whatever was going to happen, you were going to be fine.
You just needed to live in the moment, to soak everything in, more than ever before.
You needed to memorize every detail of Jade’s face, every freckle and line, because this could very much be the last time you were this close to her.
Ever again.

A/N: hey babys, im sorry this is so short, and im sorry it took so long to update.
I know I told some of yall I would update as soon as I got home, but lets be honest, I definitely did not do that.
Lets just say that I may have met a girl there, who was basically the girl of my dreams, and who lives on the other side of the world, so when I got back I was quite heartbroken that I wasn’t ever going to see her again.
Sooo I needed some time to accept the fact that I was home again, and thennnnnn I worked. A LOT.
Anyways now im back to writing again, I cant promise anything but I hope to update a few new chapters this week, so we’ll see.
Lots of kisses, J
