As you got inside, you and Jade immediately jumped down on the couch, her kicking off her shoes with a relieved sigh.
A heavy but comfortable silence filled the room.
Jade closed her eyes for a few seconds, as if she wanted to savour this quiet moment with you.
You broke the silence with a question: “Aren’t you excited that Beck texted you?”
She opened her eyes to look at you. “I am, I’m just a little surprised. I had kind of lost hope and didn’t expect him to come back to me. But yes, I am excited. I’ve been waiting for this to happen for ages.”
You nodded thoughtfully. “Sounds like the plan was successful, even though we broke a couple of our rules.”
She frowned.
“What do you mean, a couple? We only broke the no kissing rule,” she said.
As you realized what had just come out of your mouth, heat rose to your cheeks.
“Um, really? I don’t know why I thought we broke more rules than that,” you said, trying to laugh it off.
“The last few months have been hectic; for some reason, I mix everything up.”
She squinted her eyes at you before looking away.
“Whatever you say, Liv, whatever you say.”
“Yeah, so… what are you going to say if he wants to get back together?” you asked, attempting to change the subject.
“Let’s not get our hopes up. Maybe he just wants to talk about a school project or something. You never know,” she said.
“Anyway, enough about Beck. Let’s watch a horror movie.”

You got out of the car and walked towards your front door.
The sky was already dark, and everything around you was quieter than usual.
You looked back to see Jade watching you.
She had dropped you off and was now heading to Beck’s house to talk with him as he had asked.
You stopped walking, so you could say something to her.
“Thanks for today, I had fun with you. Good luck with Beck. Let me know what happens, okay?” you said, giving her a gentle smile.
“I had fun too, and I’ll text you once I leave his place,” she said softly.
Her voice was always soft around you, something you still couldn’t get used to.
Her whole demeanour was different when she was with you compared to the rest of your friend group.
She never attacked you or acted like she hated you, which was how she treated most people.
With you, she was nice, sweet, and understanding.
You never understood why she was like this when she was around you.
Even when she talked to Beck, her voice sounded harsher.
It made your head race with questions, so you tried not to think about it too much and just appreciate it.
You waved at her and watched as she drove away, thinking about all the times she had dropped you off and how you would wait outside until you couldn’t see her car anymore.
When her car finally vanished from sight, you went inside.
As you stepped through the door, a wave of sadness washed over you.
The realization hit harder than you expected, so you went up to your room and got into bed immediately.
Obviously, you were waiting for Jade to text you about what happened.
Every time your phone buzzed, you picked it up, hoping to see a message from Jade.
The nerves took over your whole body, and you tried to distract yourself, but nothing worked.
After more than an hour of waiting, you got another text, and this time it was from her.
You opened your phone without wasting a second and looked at what she had sent.
As you read it, tears started forming in your eyes, and you felt your body go numb.
The text read: “The plan worked, Liv. Beck and I are back together!!”
