The guy next to me was planning on killing everyone in the store.

I stared down at my feet, breathing uneasily as I quietly finished shoving all my stuff into my shopping bag.

Yes, I wasn’t a normal human being, and yes… I could read minds.

I didn’t know why, to be honest. And it got entirely exhausting.

And I heard things I didn’t want to hear… especially these things.

But I was glad I heard them.

I stuffed them in the bag faster.

God, I had to leave before he started or else…

Or else.

But it was too late.

He raised his gun from his pocket, immediately shooting the air. “EVERYBODY DOWN!”

Yes, if that everybody were the two other people in the store.

Everyone screamed, dropping to the floors and covering their heads.

I just remained standing, narrowing my eyes down at my bag. “Shit.”

“You there!” he said to me, catching my arm. “Get with the others!”

He shoved me forward then, and I cried out, stumbling before I collapsed down onto the floor.

I nearly hit my head before my hands cushioned my fall, and I grunted.

I sat up hazily, breathing shallowly.

“Now look here, you shitheads,” the shooter snapped. “You try to make a move to leave, you get a nice bullet through your head. Do you hear me?”

Everybody whimpered, shrinking in on themselves.

I just struggled to sit up.

“If you want to live MOVE TO THE CORNER THERE!” he yelled then, making them scream and scramble over to the corner.

I just remained in place, gazing up at him.

“That means you too, bitch,” he said then, glaring down at me.

“Look, man,” I said then, raising my hands. “I know you wanna kill all of us, and all, but if you try to hurt me… someone I really don’t like is going to appear out of nowhere. I’ve been trying to avoid him, so can you be a kind fellow and let me go?”

The shooter just took a menacing step toward me. “Are you asking to be on hell’s doorstep right now?”

I just sighed, grumbling under my breath and crawling over to the corner.

“Does anyone else want to explain superficial bullshit to me?” he snapped then.

“It’s not superficial,” I said then. “I really do not like him.”

“Honey, shhh!” the store owner said. “Don’t intimidate him!”

“I really want my chicken noodle soup,” I argued then. “I’m hungry.”

“Look here, girl,” he growled then. “What’re you, sixteen? You got your whole life ahead of you, so I suggest you keep your mouth shut.”

“Ah, yes, you acknowledged my age and how I have my whole life ahead,” I said then, gazing up. “So can I go now?”

He raised the gun to me. “One more word, and I SWEAR.”

I smiled then.

Well… I guess I’m far from avoiding that road now. I took a late turn.

“ONE MORE WORD,” he repeated. “AND I WILL SHOOT YOU.”

I gazed up then, lips curling. “Scrabulous.”

“What are you doing?” the storeowner cried.

He growled under his breath then, cocking his gun.

“I knew it was a word!” I said then, laughing. “When I played scrabble last night, my friend said it wasn’t.”

He then pressed onto the trigger, making everyone scream.

I smiled up at him.

It just clicked.

His face immediately paled, and he gazed down at his gun, pressing the trigger again.

Nothing happened.

“Well,” someone said from the right aisle, “look who we have here.”

We all looked to the side to find a tall, broad man tossing a thin object in his hand.

The shooter stilled when he realized it was the bullet case to his gun. “How did you…?”

“Hello,” the tall man said, bowing slightly, “my name is Alpha Damon. Nice to meet you.”

I heard everyone’s thoughts echo confused sentences and the word “alpha” mixed in with them.

“I warned you,” I said then, rolling my eyes. “I don’t like him.”

“Wow,” Damon said then, glancing over at me, “that hurts, really.” He smiled then. “I knew it would be a matter of time before I found you. You always seem to find your way toward danger.”

I just grumbled under my breath. “It’s been five years. I would say I did a great job.”

“Okay, what the actual hell is happening?” the shooter said.

Damon just gazed over at him, eyes flashing a bright green.

The shooter’s face suddenly went white, and he let out a gasp, clutching his throat.

He collapsed to the ground, choking on nothing as Damon yawned, tossing the bullet case into the trashcan.

He then made his way over to the shooter. “You’re not very good at this, you know.”

He gazed up at Damon, still choking.

Damon just kneeled down. “This is for trying to shoot my girl.”

And he caught the sides of the man’s head, immediately jerking his head to the side and snapping it.

I watched numbly as Damon stood and dusted off his pants.

He then glanced over at the two people huddled in the corner and his eyes flashed a bright green. “Nothing happened. You both fell asleep due to a chemical spill and this was all a dream.”

Their whimpers suddenly lessened, and I heard their bodies collapse onto the ground behind me, stating that they fell unconscious.

“Winter,” Damon said then. “I need to talk to you.”

“Well…” I said then, smiling up at him. “I’d rather go home, thanks.”

He just caught my arm and shoved me up, making me grunt in annoyance when he dragged me out from the store.
