I glanced down nervously at Damon as he stood below my window. “It’s too high up. I’ll fall.”
It was eight o’clock in the evening, and my mom was asleep, so I had to sneak out quietly… not through the front door which had an alarm system noise attached to it.
I was incredibly lucky that the upstairs windows did not.
Damon just smiled. “Too high?”
I nodded. “Catch me.”
He looked up in amusement. “Okay, in one… two—”
I jumped off, making his lips part when the world fell out from under me.
Until I landed in his arms, and he gazed down at me when I bounced back up.
“Really?” he said then. “No hesitation?”
“You would catch me,” I stated then. “No matter when I fell.”
He just set me onto my feet, and gazed down at me. “Come, now. Let’s go.”
I walked with him to a black Jeep parked on the side of the road, and he opened the passenger door for me, and I scooted in before he closed the door behind me.
About ten minutes later, he parked on the side of the road, opening a door for me.
I got out, immediately gazing up to find us standing outside a large carnival that happened to be near the mall.
I glanced back at him.
He just smiled.
So I sighed and continued forward. “Why is there a carnival in November?”
“Haven’t you heard?” Damon said then. “It’s called the Winter Circus. It comes here every year.”
“But it’s a carnival, not a circus,” I said then.
He gazed down at me. “That’s because the circus is on the other side of the carnival.”
I blinked before nodding, and I gazed around curiously.
After a moment of walking through the cold, dark streets, I finally turned and looked back at him. “Why did you take me here? Something tells me you didn’t want just fun and games. There’s a reason, isn’t there?”
Damon just leaned down, face close to mine. “Must you always be so paranoid?”
“I’m not paranoid, just observant,” I responded.
He smirked then, holding out his hand.
And I took it, feeling him tug me forward toward the right of the carnival.
When we stopped walking, I gazed up to find us standing right outside the walls of a big shed called “the horrors of reflection”.
So, in other words, the house of mirrors.
Damon just stepped around me, lightly brushing his hand along my neck to swift my hair over my shoulder.
He just smiled. “Let’s play a game.”
I blinked. “A game?”
“Yes,” he said then, eyes glowing in amusement. “There’s one simple goal. Get through the house of mirrors.”
“Oh, okay,” I said then, “I can do that.”
“I wasn’t finished,” he said then.
I gazed back up at him.
His lips curled mischievously, finishing his sentence, “Don’t let me catch you. Or the night won’t end.”
I blinked.
What did he mean? “The night won’t end“?
“Go,” he said then, nodding to the maze.
I gazed back up at the house of mirrors, swallowing something hard before I urged myself forward.
I just glanced briefly back at Alpha Damon before I pressed through the curtains and into the maze.
I blinked then, brows drawing together when I stopped at my own reflection.
I held my hands out, lightly touching the mirror in front of me before turning and heading down the first path.
The lights suddenly switched off, making me yelp.
A sudden soft spotlight switched on, making my heart pound hard against my ribcage when the mirrors lit back up… but everything around them was darkness.
“Winter,” someone said from behind me.
I whipped around, gasping when Damon’s reflection in a mirror smiled mischievously.
“Didn’t I say to run?” he said then.
I spun back around and dashed forward, pushing my hands out to find other walls.
I ran into one, letting out a breath when I looked around nervously.
My heart pounded hard against my ribcage, and I glanced around.
But his reflection flashed behind me, eyes glowing green on his shadowed form.
I squealed and ran again, holding my hands out before I met another wall, and I spun around to another pathway.
I was gasping, my heart thudding against my chest.
My veins were buzzing, my sight growing dark around the edges… I was panicking. No…
I was excited.
I breathed uneasily as I followed my reflection forward.
His shadowed form appeared in the mirror in front of me, and I screamed, scrambling backward before I continued down another dark path.
“Where are you going?” he cooed. “Won’t you play with me?”
I just slammed into another mirror, and I grunted before stumbling back.
I spun around nervously before finding another hallway to go through.
“I can hear you gasping,” he said then, footsteps echoing through the chambers as I whimpered. “Are you afraid?”
Yes.
But I liked it.
I hit another wall and went left, making my way further into the maze.
“Would it help if I sang a lullaby?” he said then, making my bones chill. “Hush, little kitten, don’t be afraid. I’m gonna snatch you anyway. When all of the birds silence their peeps, I will be there, just you wait.”
I hit another wall and went right.
My reflection was pale, but my cheeks were reddened. I honestly didn’t know how that worked, but I couldn’t care less.
When I saw a light forming at the end of a group of mirrors, I smiled.
Almost there.
But a hand snagged my arm, and I screamed in horror.
Damon just shoved me against him, and I clashed with his chest when he locked his arms around me. “Got you.”
I breathed shakily, trying to remain calm when his stance seemed to ease with amusement.
“Poor thing,” he said, clearly not meaning it, “you’re shaking. Did I scare you that much?”
I gazed up at him then, watching him with curious eyes as he gazed down at me, smirking back.
“I’m buzzing,” I told him, voice quivering.
“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” he said then.
“I love it,” I said then.
He just lifted me by my hips and carried me out through the exit. “Well… I caught you. Do you know what this means?”
I shook my head.
He just leaned his face close to mine. “The night is far from over.”
He then set me down, lashes lowering. “Now you must do everything I say.”
I watched him for a moment. “As long as I don’t dance naked, I’m good.”
He just chuckled, but his eyes suddenly flashed green.
He caught me and threw me over his shoulder, making me squeal.
But he just marched forward, and I kicked out my legs. “I’m upside down!”
“I know,” he said then. “Does that frighten you?”
“No,” I said then, “I’m just complaining.”
He chuckled then. “You won’t be for long.”
“Where are we going?” I asked then.
“A haunted house,” he responded.
“In November?” I wondered.
“Yes.”
“Okay.” I dropped it, looking around while in this odd position.
