Sebastian inhaled slowly, his shoulders tensed, and his neck ached. The building pressure of exhaustion and frustration mixed together and consumed him like poison, building like turmoil, crippling his creativity, and leaving him unable to finish his sketch. The soft pitter-patter of falling rain filled the silent room of Sebastian’s home office.

It was nice having a place to work in the comfort of his own home. Though, Sadie was never that crazy about it. In fact, on multiple occasions, she had tried to talk him into redoing the room and making it another closet or maybe even a home gym. But Sebastian refused to budge. Why would he change it? It made nights like these—nights he had to work near past midnight—much easier to endure.

Except there was nothing he could do to help when he felt blocked creativity as he had lately.

In vexation, he dropped his pencil and slumped into his seat. Running a hand down his tired face, he exhaled.

All-day, Sebastian had been trying to work on a new sketch for his next project. And all day nothing had come to him. It was like a wall stood tall and unbending in his mind, preventing any inspiration from flowing. It was maddening!

The sun had long set, and now a gentle breeze blew through the cracked window above his desk.

Thunder rumbled in the distance as Sebastian curled his back and rolled his neck. Small pops echoed with each bend and twist, relieving tension that had built. Exhaustedly, he closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the leather chair. He sat in silence, the distant sound of the grandfather clock ticking in the hallway filling the emptiness. Faintly, he could hear the sound of leaves rustling in the light rain—the soothing melody like a symphony to his exasperated mind.

Sebastian had no idea how long he sat like that exactly, but when he came back to reality, it was from the robotic sound of the alarm system going off. “Backdoor—open!”

Sebastian’s eyes snapped open.

Confusion filled him, but it was soon replaced with alert when he pulled up the security footage on his computer and found the backdoor wide open. His breath left him. And Nadine was the first that entered his mind.
