~JEONGIN POV~
My leg bounced, my palms were sweating, and my fingers anxiously picked at the skin around my nails. I looked around the class, seeing the other students looking distressed, too. Today, my class and I had a math exam, and this one was very important. This test would count toward our college graduation points, so I knew I had to do well-like, really well. I used to be good at math, but since the beginning of the year, I just hadn’t been focused in class. Mostly because of the one distraction that tortured me-the same guy who helped me study for this very test. The guy I called my best friend, Chan.
The test was handed to me, and I scribbled down my name before looking at the questions. At first, my mind went blank, but then I started to realize I might actually have a shot at doing well. It was a two-page sheet, and we had an hour to finish it. I felt… slightly confident?
First question… Solve for x in the following equation… xâµ – 3x³ + 2x – 1 = 0
I read the question to myself, then started writing down my answer. Soon enough, I was done with the first page. Not long after, I finished the second, with ten minutes left until the bell signaled the end of the exam. I re-read my answers a few more times before the bell rang. I stood up and handed my test to the teacher.
I was now standing in front of the school entrance, letting out a sigh I didn’t realize I’d been holding in.
“Hey!… Hey, Jeongin!” A voice called out, and I turned around to see who it was-another classmate.
“Uh… hey?”
The boy stopped in front of me, slightly out of breath. “Tomorrow, Friday… there’s a party for us graduates…” he said between breaths. Jeongin was a bit shocked; he wasn’t much of a party person.
“You can bring a friend or two… Actually, bring anyone and everyone.”
Jeongin immediately thought of someone to invite, a few names already popping into his mind. “Okay… I’ll be there… with some friends.”
After a short walk from school, I found myself rummaging through my bag for my spare keys. My older brother was probably out spoiling my younger brother, since today was his last day in town. As for my parents, they were definitely at work.
I walked in, and, as I expected, the house was empty. Since my older brother was a few years older, he’d moved out as soon as he started college, only visiting on school breaks or some weekends if he wasn’t working. My younger brother, since our parents worked from morning till night and he was still little, often stayed with our grandparents. This left me alone most of the day. I didn’t mind; I’d gotten used to it. Sure, I’d get bored sometimes, but then I’d just text Chan… right! I’d forgotten to text him about the exam!
I took out my phone and dialed his number, putting it to my ear as it started ringing.
“Hey, Innie?”
“Chan! The exam went… I’d say pretty well? I think I’ll get a B.”
“Ah, yeah… Honestly, I almost forgot about that, haha… So, you’re feeling confident, huh?”
“Yeah, I think it’ll go well. And all thanks to you, hyung!”
“Haha… well, I did help, but you took the test, didn’t you? So it’s all on you.”
“Yeah, but I would have failed without you, hyung.”
“Oh, don’t talk like that… You know you’d have done fine.”
“Well, don’t jinx it now!” I chuckled.
“Okay, okay, I won’t jinx it… So, is that all?”
“Well, that’s why I called, so… I guess it is.”
“Well then, if that’s the case… I’ll say my farewells?” Chan chuckled.
“Yeah… I guess so,” I chuckled back.
“Well, bye then, Inn-” Chan’s sentence was cut off.
“Wait! Uh, tomorrow night there’s a party… So, uh, wanna go? Bring your friends.”
“A party…? Since when do you go to parties?”
“Oh, um, it’s a graduation party. They told me to invite whoever.”
“Ah… okay, okay… I’ll tell the rest. See you tomorrow then?”
“Yeah… see you.”
“Bye Innie…”
